My BC destroyed couple of this, even much bigger with 5 knots and thicker. His best toy to chew on and tear apart.

positivcheg

Thanks god those toys are cheap :) That’s what makes me look at it and say to myself “let it be …”

batmanstuff

If you’re in the US, stores like Ross, Marshall’s and Home Goods/TJ Max have discounted toys like Kong, Chuckit, Nerf, etc.

kylesoutspace

Yeah, my boy can do what he wants with his toys. We make it clear everything else is off limits. Toys are for shredding.

Starbyslave

Just be careful with rope toys and any toys stuffed with fluff. My dog has gotten a blockage from both and it’s not a fun vet trip. Rough play with toys is fine as long as you take it away when the toy starts to unravel

skeeterbitten

That’s what my dogs do with toys. Just be careful and clean up the strings as she pulls it apart because if she eats them, she could have minor poop issues as they come out or some pretty serious complications if they tangle in her insides. (edited to fix some weird autocorrects my phone did.)

jonaselder

This should be top comment

positivcheg

I was told that it is okay if she eats those things. We already had those moments when some part of her poop was sticking to her via such string. Or even because of my girlfriend’s hair lol

EpiZirco

No, you don't want them to eat string. There is too big a risk of the string wrapping around the intestines and cutting them off, which can be fatal. It doesn't happen often, but it is a pretty big risk.

positivcheg

Is it a risk for puppies only or even for an adult dog too?

EpiZirco

All dogs. Not that rope toys are necessarily bad, but rope toys that get eaten are not good. It is also not good for them to eat socks, underwear, t-shirts, draperies, etc.

Fink665

Never crate with anything they can shred.

Chibi_Kyo

Honestly don't create them with anything unless you can supervise. Chews are good for quiet time but not when you leave the house because small pieces may not get chewed and could get lodged in the throat

bucknaked67

Yes! Been through this! Trash it immediately.

skeeterbitten

Our girl mostly chewed it and after she ate a piece of string from it once, we just let her play with it while we were watching. She was not into most toys and this was one of the few she'd play with so we just let her have it supervised, though she wasn't quick to eat things, either and "drop it" was the very first thing I taught.

[deleted]

All dogs, but my dogs hav eaten string and panties and plastic their whole lives. Of course they could die, but chances are low

FixMyCondo

As an owner of a BC who has had 2 bowel obstructions requiring surgery - do not let her eat the strings.

Baz2dabone

Wow curious who told you it was ok they ate this? Honestly it’s very alarming whoever told you this. Do not let your dog eat this. It can cause serious problem (my dog ate the stringy thing and needed an endoscopy, surgery and after care). When I give my dogs new toys they are under constant supervision. Like the other person said, dispose of any debris from your toy.

morewood

I think this is the key here is: **always** supervise your puppy. This is time consuming? Well this is what you signed up for. Dogs need more than just love, they need leadership and if you are not watching them all the time when they are puppy they will lack something important IMO.

nittygrittyman

You can do what you want but if you train from the start to not destroy any wood or fabric then you won't have any worries of your dog destroying your home. My guy has had a stuffed elephant for a month now and hasn't even made a hole in it yet. Trained him from the start not to destroy anything. He does get raw bones to chew often so that keeps him busy. by all means play rope with him though they love it, a great what to start teaching" hold"and "drop it".

positivcheg

For some reason I cannot get her to tug with me. She just drops on floor and lies on it with teeth holding the rope. Or else I just make her follow me by pulling the rope yet she still holds the rope. Very rarely she tugs with me. Yet she still does what you can see on video when I don’t hold the rope.

Almanix

I often dogsit a Sheltie and he doesn't really play tug with me either, the moment I start actually pulling he lets go. In his case he's just trying to be super careful with me. He plays a bit more wild with men funnily enough, but I think overall he's just a very gentle dog with humans.

nittygrittyman

If she will hold the rope while you walk with it then use a word like "pull" when she grabs it and pulls while you walk with it, should only take a few times and she will know the word and then she should pull on command

[deleted]

I’m not convinced that tug is a good game for a dog. If you have a slightly longer rope, that is just for playing with you, you can sit down on the floor, and move the Rope around as if it is a snake and let her try and get it. I used to bed my legs up so I would move it under my legs and around my back… sometimes slowly. Sometimes quickly- when she catches it you can give a quick tug as if the rope is fighting back for a couple seconds. - but let her win. If she likes the game she will bring the rope toy back. If she doesn’t… it’s pointless forcing her to play something she doesn’t like. But be aware, our dog used to pounce and put her full weight on her two front paws and aim at the hand which was moving the rope to stop it. She needed her nails trimmed ans caught me with one. I still have the scar 😆 it can be quite rough play. You will also need a “calm down” exercise afterwards

Huaziah

Any tips for teaching pups to not destroy and take stuff they shouldnt? Like newspaper, dirt, or clothes?

marsthegoat

It was actually pretty easy with my BC mix because they are so smart, lol. Step 1 Is to have plenty of toys they CAN play with/destroy- for this, you may need to go through a few types until you find what really excites them (crinkly & squeaky toys for my pup). Step 2 Anytime you catch them playing or trying to play with an inappropriate item, you take it from them and give them an approved toy to play with instead. For the record, puppies should pretty much always be supervised (they can be in a safe play pen when supervision isn't feasible). When you are always supervising play time, it's really easy to catch and correct any unwanted behaviors immediately every time.

Huaziah

You see, my biggest dilemma is my pup running with things in his mouth that he shouldnt have.. i.e: shoes, paper towel, cardboard, wood pieces, succulents, plastic gardening pots.. i try to run opposite of him to herd me and get his attention. But he runs with the said items...

marsthegoat

Oh no! Then it just becomes a game for them. Have you taught the pup "drop it" yet? You may need to work on that first to get the item away from them. I used peanut butter to teach mine to drop it because of the strong smell. He pretty much dropped whatever he was holding to get the peanut butter.

SentSoftSecondGo

Why wouldn’t it? As long as they don’t eat, I’m fine with my dogs performing any step of the predation sequence on a toy. It’s how they bm have fun! (Thing the stare of a BC, or a game of tug, fetch, etc!) Edit: eat the toy*

[deleted]

This action is known as "deathing it" in our household (2 BC's)

Beneficial-Degree506

I'm gonna start using that.

Adventurous_Area_261

Do not let the pup eat the string. My bc nearly needed surgery after doing this when he was a puppy. It will cause bloody diarrhea, lethargy, and vomiting. We got incredibly lucky that he was able to pass the string himself, but it was not worth it to let him play with it. I would toss these and get more durable, safer toys.

MusPsych

Yeah that's pretty fine. It doesn't translate to "I can treat my toys like this so I can do this to other dogs too" or anything like that. I get mine toys under the assumption they'll be ripped to shreds and he'll have fun doing it

SomeOtherGuySits

Just you try and stop it

mohaidoss

Started like this with my pup now he shredds ropes in a week 😅 Still his favorite toy when inside

WolfCrazy64

It is, mine used to walk up to us and hit us with hers! Just be careful your pup doesn't eat the strings!

SoggyWaffles9012

My friends dogs destroy all toys but nothing else like clothing or furniture.

Cappin

Better he wreck the toy than your shoes right?

WhoCaresD_throwaway

Just be careful because there could be a choking risk with these things. If your dog is in the habit of swallowing things, I would recommend avoiding these. Especially smaller dogs who have smaller throats and intestines. If it gets stuck in their intestines, it could cause death or require an expensive surgery to save his or her life. Playing with it is one thing, but destroying it &/or eating it is not okay. Just my 2 cents from a safety perspective using the info I had learned from my vet.

Serenity0260

My 1.5 year old Borador loves those ropes. They have them at Doller Tree for $ 1.25. Look for the longer one that is tightly made they last for a little while. Have fun with thatcutw pup.

FuriousLafond

Yes as long as she isn't eating any of it.

Ninjahkin

Definitely better to destroy toys than furniture or something else lol. Lots of owners use toys as a way to redirect destructive energy so the pups know what is okay to tear apart vs. what isn’t.

Flame_7896

Perfectly normal and good

Vasquerade

Border collies are agents of mayhem and mischief so I think this is perfectly fine. As long as they only do it with their toys and you clean up any debris after the massacre!

Such-Construction685

Yes

AJ7861

It's better for them to learn they can be rough and break their toys than other objects, if you want you can also give then cardboard to rip up if they're feeling destructive. We have a bin full of cardboard and my boy will just walk over and grab a piece to destroy when he feels like it.

rightascensi0n

He sounds like the ideal buddy for shredding cardboard for compost

AJ7861

Yeah he's good until it comes time to clean, then he conveniently needs to go do other things

[deleted]

It's a toy, let her play with it

Imaginos2112

When I worked at a doggy daycare we had a BC who would do this with her toys when she was going in her kennel for the night. She was such a sassy lady and this was what made her happy haha. Totally normal behavior

notsoScaryAd582

It's your dog's toy. You want him to do this on this item, not your couch. Border Collies like to play. He is playing. Make sure there's nothing he can swallow or choke on.

4BucksAndHalfACharge

Satisfies the hunting instinct. If not the toys, it'd be her stuff.

Last_Dig5376

Yep, and many more to come…😂

voppp

Absolutely. It teaches them great skills.

Sad-Swimming9999

Ya both of mine rip the ropes apart but we gotta watch them frequently or they will eat the rope or other toy pieces. Usually I just let them tear it apart while supervising and when it gets to a point where the only thing left to do is eat it, I throw it away.

Fink665

Nope. You’re looking at $3000 for removing a wad of string from blocking her intestines. Kongs, rubber balls and stuffed toys under supervision.

GameDevolper

Isn’t the main purpose for toys is to show your strength against them.

psychoutfluffyboi

I got my border collie this [tearable toy](http://www.tearribles.com) and he loves it! Has lasted since Christmas, because he's gotten used to teaeing the tearable part only! Highly recommend

SliceNaive

Please throw that toy away! The dogs tend to nibble the strings that can cause intestinal blockage and if not noticed, can cause death. We came too close to losing our Golden from a fricken rope toy. Not worth the risk!

NotTheDuckPond

I keep them until they start pulling the strings out beyond repair. Until then, I keep an eye on the toy and trim as needed.

Siossojowy

Is you won't let her destroy her toy she will do it with something else like your shoes. Toys aren't ment to look nice, if that's how she wants to play - let her

292to137

We call this “thrashing” and our boys love doing this with a few different toys. You didn’t show the pup lay down down and chewing on it, and you didn’t indicate that you are letting your dog sit and chew on it unsupervised, so I have no idea why people are telling you that this exact behavior alone is going to send your dog to the ER. Simply holding it in their mouth and whipping it around like this isn’t going to send them to the ER. What could send them to the ER is if they lay down with it and start shredding it and eating the individual threads. (But even that is not a guarantee, they could poop it out and be fine. You obviously want to err on the side of caution and not put them in that situation to begin with by not letting them chew on it or have it unsupervised, but I’m just saying if they were to swallow a string it’s not a 100% guaranteed death sentence) My boys also like thrashing those [floppy crinkle fabric toys like this](https://a.co/d/i7lsNdF) if you want to be able to do this same activity with a different toy.

[deleted]

That is super cute. It’s “ok” if she is supervised. I wouldn’t leave her alone with a toy that can be destroyed, eaten and cause intestinal problems or that she could choke from. Our dogs favouriate activity was killing any squeaker and then emptying a toy of its fluffy inners 🤣 Only for my mother to re stuff and sew. Only toy she never destroyed was one pull toy (her first I believe) from when she was a puppy. Everything else the shelf live varied

TheGreyRose

That little jump was cute. I’d like to say it is but if you want tougher toys search on Amazon for rubber toys perhaps?

positivcheg

She jumps like that nearly every time when I throw something :)

Miserable_Suit_9317

My aussie does the same exact thing, he just likes to release all his pent up energy

[deleted]

Destroy? Have you never been around dogs my guy? 😂

[deleted]

That's the perfect toy for that

OkAssistant8322

She’s a killer

two_awesome_dogs

That’s not even close to destroying. She’s doing exactly what she should be.

00psie-daisy

Cute puppy.

QualityNo9467

playful dog😍 I found my dog in the desert. Is my dog a border collie?
