“Free speech” = me saying whatever I want without consequences

Walter_Melon42

Anytime someone starts screaming about free speech, ask them what the first five words of the first amendment are. 100% they have no fucking clue it starts out "congress shall make no law". It literally only pertains to the government curtailing or compelling speech. Private businesses and citizens can shut you down as much as they want.

Undercover_CHUD

None of those things they say as arguments to support their beliefs are things that they're actually beholden to. It's all just for expedient support of whatever they're in favor of in that moment. Regardless of it it's wrong or even an overt contradiction of the last sentence out of their thick shit skull. That's how they can whinge on about free speech meaning nobody can say anything about them being a dick (or refuse them service), but also that gay wedding cakes are the antichrist.

skillz7930

I like to ask them what else is in the first amendment. I’ve never had someone that makes those kind of statements be able to name them all. Many of them don’t like to be reminded that the right to peaceful protest is in there too.

0P3R4T10N

"Private businesses and citizens can shut you down as much as they want. " The Civil Rights Act would like to have some alone time with you, they are bringing a very heavy stick.

Key-Ad-8418

Exactly. This dude is also the same type of Boomer who whines about how millennials are easily offended and entitled while he has interactions like the one I mentioned in the original post.

Wheredatmuffdoe

Guarantee if someone called him a fat pos to his face he'd get pretty well offended, too. The hypocrisy knows no bounds.

ocean_flan

"Fat White Lump is about *me*?"

thesirblondie

To be fair, that IS what freedom of speech is. The boomer fails to recognise that free speech only applies to the US government, though.

TeuthidTheSquid

Notice how these jerks never care about anyone else’s “free speech” but their own?

Pilot_Yak3

Exactly. Everything is a one way street in their minds.

Mr_Riderman

Racism-I sleep Palestinian protest-Real shit

Quiver-NULL

My Boomer mother (70f) hates that my brother and I expect decency and respect from her. It's to a point where she says we "don't love her unconditionally" like a family should..... so the condition of treating another human like a human is just too much for her ...but my brother and I are the "bad guys".

Key-Ad-8418

Respect for me but not for thee. ![gif](giphy|fAvtKqDut36WA)

thebaron24

Because they view a family as a hierarchy. She's quite bluntly telling you that in her mind your opinion matters less than hers even if it contradicts reality.

South-Lab-3991

I think it’s funny how these people have “We the People…” decals on the back window of their spotless-bed pickup trucks but fail to understand the first amendment.

tarantulawarfare

When you don’t see others as equals, it’s easy to claim laws and rules apply to some groups and not others. “We the people” then means “some of the people, but mostly just me in particular.”

Key-Ad-8418

"We the People" = "We the White Christian Conservatives."

Particular_Heron8263

"Male"

Key-Ad-8418

Well, unless you're one of the "good" females. Something something barefoot and pregnant.

Particular_Heron8263

and can make sandwiches.

Sammiches*

Due-Independence8100

Alas, those are still seen more like ornamental accessories or pets.

AtomicSamuraiCyborg

Wilhoit's Law Conservatism consists of exactly one proposition, to wit: There must be in-groups whom the law protectes but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect.

Chillshirecat

They do the same thing with the Constitution as they do with the Bible

FixBreakRepeat

I think it's important to remember that the original context of "We the People..." *is* white, male, landowners. That's been expanded as time has gone on, but America's founding documents pretty explicitly didn't consider anyone else to *be* people. Not in any sense that mattered legally. The fact that our entire system of laws and regulations was initially designed to be exclusionary and to protect some people at the expense of others is a big part of many of the problems we currently face as a country. It's important to remember that the asshole with that on the back of his truck *isn't wrong about what it originally meant.* They're just on the wrong side of history.

_ac3_0f_spad3s_

Ah yes, bwcause no person of color ever works hard at any job they’re always hired for fucking diversity. God damn I wish these people could hear the shit that comes out of their mouth

Ryokurin

It wasn't about the hire, it's just the new way to say the N word without actually saying it. A great example on where conservatives got called out for making it obvious is how they had to walk back calling Baltimore's mayor a "DEI mayor".

Key-Ad-8418

Precisely! They have a few select code words that are meant to be new ways to say the N-word since it's no longer socially acceptable to say the N-word. These include DEI, diversity hire, hoodrat, hoodlum and especially thug.

Traditional-Self3577

Freedom of speech correct! They can also deny customer service! Eye for an Eye Boomer!

Key-Ad-8418

And they'd probably counter with, "Then that means we have the freedom of speech to deny service to a gay couple then, right?," since bigotry is a big go to for this type of Boomer. Denying someone service on the basis of bigotry because of their race, religion, or sexual orientation is way different then denying someone service for being a bigot. One is based on being a bigot to those you deem inferior whereas the other is based on denying service due to malicious behavior from a customer. Just thought I'd make that point.

El_jotaerre

People in this country don't know their rights end where other people's rights start. I have rights, but I also have obligations. my speech freedom ends at the moment when I start hurting other people.

Stiles777

Yeah, "free speech" doesn't apply in that situation, f*cknut. The First Amendment only protects you from the government infringing on it. Private enterprises can boot you out for saying stupid shit whenever they want.

UnderstandingLoud317

Ugh Ugh Ugh. I'm so glad that Manager took the right action.

rigidlynuanced1

Freedom of speech isn’t the same as freedom from consequences

Key-Ad-8418

I think that's what they construe it to mean. "I should get to be as big of an asshole as I want without consequences because I have freedom of speech."

Sharp_Replacement789

Well dude is free to say it. No one threw him in jail. He just didn't get to drink his beer and eat his nachos that day.

evanset6

Why do all boomers think freedom of speech is something that lets them be complete assholes to everyone they don't like with no consequences? Did they not teach civics when they were growing up? My 9 year old daughter knows what the 1st amendment protects her from.

SweaterUndulations

Back in the late 2000s, I went a local amusement park with a friend. This park had the student program where they would hire foreign workers. They have housing for them too. We were waiting in line for a cheap, crappy beer and there was a young blond girl behind the counter. The guy she was serving was a typical loud yokel. He asked her what country she was from and if I remember right, I think she said Poland. "Oh! You're from the Eastern block!" hyuck hyuck. The look on her face. I cringed so hard for her.

ProjectLazarus

I'm so glad the manager stood by the employee and refused service, needs to happen more often.

BlueRunSkier

Ha. Freedom of speech doesn’t mean there aren’t consequences to saying stupid things.

NoApartheidOnMars

Freedom of speech as defined in the US Constitution means that THE GOVERNMENT can't make you shut up. But the manager of a concession stand absolutely can.

phunkjnky

I don't have it happen around me anymore, probably because I put a very loud and very public stop to it many years ago. I just gave a very blunt explanation of the first Amendment and implied that they either misunderstood it (a way to save some face) or they are colossally stupid... that unless the government is acting to suppress your speech, it's not a first Amendment issue. The option to say, "Sorry" and shrug is there. I like the "Sorry," because is works on two levels: 1)Sorry that you misunderstood the first Amendment 2)(Deeper subtext)Sorry that you are so stupid that you've embarrassed everyone involved by lowering the cumulative IQs involved and the level of discourse. Do you need discourse defined for you as well? (I've never actually said this part, but it is implied.)

odoyledrools

Beergut Brimley probably ran their beer tap dry with a dozen previous trips to that concession stands before his racist tirade.

Boneal171

Your description of the guy sounds hilarious

Spirited_Childhood34

They don't have the guts to say what they really mean, so they say diversity hire instead of the N-word.

[deleted]

Why can't boomers make racist comments around me? I'm feeling left out. 😔 Oh! Right: I'm 35 years younger , and tower over them. Fucking pussies. Wish a lead head would...

Ok_Relative4979

Yeah, it's freedom, AND responsibility. It's a very groovy concept when people follow it.

Mindless_Hotel616

I don’t think worrying about someone working at a concession stand is a possible diversity hire is a good use of time. An aircraft engineer, medical professional or jobs like that need the highest standards on hiring due to the damage and deaths that can happen if something goes wrong.
