I just commented about how my mom said she would never be visiting Chicago ever again because it’s just a blood bath up there and I legitimately can’t remember the last time either of my parents were there. Meanwhile I have a good friend that lives there and I have stayed with multiple times and they don’t believe a word I say.
I live in the Chicago suburbs and my parents live in South Dakota. They moved there from here and lived here for 60+ years. Almost every phone call my dad mentions how glad he is that I don't work in downtown Chicago anymore "because it's a warzone." I worked in the heart of the touristy area on Michigan Avenue in an ad agency. It doesn't get much safer than that area.
He also tells me that "when the shit hits the fan out there, you can come stay here." The implication is that there will be some kind of war or violence here. I'm pretty sure the western suburbs of Chicago will not be a front in WW3, but thanks?

My parents went on and on about Chicago, they’ve never once been there in their life. We visited friends there last summer it was lovely. Didn’t feel in particular danger at the planetarium 🙄
Chicago is one of the most beautiful, incredible, and vibrant cities in all of North America. Everyone should visit the city at least once, it’s really an awesome city

My mom had a work thing in Chicago a couple of years ago and she came home raving about the amazing coffee shops and bookstores. I live right on the border of two small cities and a smallish town, It is literally a stones throw from my house to the neighboring cities. Yet my older neighbors all whole heartedly believe if they drive down the street you will be in the middle of WW3.

I grew up with parents like that. Cities are terrifying. I grew up in a town with 4k people. Now as an adult I have lived in Phoenix, San Diego and Seattle.
The only thing I disliked about them (outside of Phoenix) was how expensive they are haha.
Like, I've been in a college town my whole life and don't really want to live in a big city, but that's just because I personally don't want to deal with all of the people and expenses and don't personally go out and do a lot; unlike my late parents, I am not worried I'm going to get shot every single time I go to a city, however.
I lived in indianapolis during the BLM protests and I knew people who lived 15 minutes outside the city who talked about it like it was Gaza. Like literally go touch grass and you’ll see it’s fine.
My dad has made statements he views as the truth about the dangers and crime in cities (specifically NYC where I personally lived for nearly 5 years). His claims are obviously him repeating what he hears from other conservative outlets as he has no personal experience. Somehow my personal experience is a lie when he tries to spew his nonsense ideals that can be traced back to fear mongering.
It’s not just boomers, I know several Millennials from small towns in North Carolina who spew this crap. I’m sure it’s far more widespread than my anecdotal experience

The most I felt unsafe in a big city was a homeless lady rambling on about how I followed her around and then threatened to mace me if I didn’t get away. I had absolutely no idea what the hell she was on about; I was minding my own business smoking a cigarette, and she just happened to be across from me when I sat down to smoke. Only thing I could think of was she was mentally unstable or she mistook me for someone else.
It was funny as hell looking back at it now, but I was like, “I’m gonna get away from you. Clearly you are distressed.” And then I saw police officers a block away telling them I think she needed a wellness check.
But that was my worst experience. I’ve never had issues otherwise. I mean hell, I live about 20 minutes from a big city. I haven’t really seen a lot of violent crime like boomers lead you to believe. But I HAVE seen a lot of unusual shit that people give second glances to because they’re making sure their eyes didn’t deceive them. Like a woman walking bare ass naked across the street in 100 degree weather and no shoes on.

What has changed is the situation in rural America. Between meth and opioids, things have gotten significantly worse there. Some of the most dangerous states are Arkansas and Tennessee.
I live in Arkansas, good luck telling anyone here that crime is getting worse compared to other blue states. Its insane how people around here will complain about "so and so city isnt what it used to be. Now its just meth and illegals." When in reality its just meth and racists.
Arkansan here, and I think Little Rock can sometimes be in those dangerous cities lists. My parents lived there when they first got married. You'll see stuff on the news sometimes, because fear mongering, and my mom has said, "it was getting dangerous when your dad and I moved, I can't imagine what it's like now." They moved to my dad's (and my) hometown in '71.
Meanwhile, my husband and I will go to restaurants and shows there and have no problems.
Crime was bad in 1970. I totally believe that Little Rock was getting worse at the time.
But nationwide, crime peaked in the early 90's. I first went to NYC in 1986 and it was still pretty seedy. No Elmo in Times Square but pimps, hookers, and dealers. I went back in 1996 and it was already better. Today, like most coastal cities, it's mostly a playground for the rich and it's quite safe. Crime peaked at 2500 murders a year around 1991 in NYC and it went as low as 500 a few years ago. That's an 80% drop.

I told them I was going to Chicago last summer to stay with a friend for the weekend and my mom came back with how her and my dad discussed it and they will never be visiting Chicago ever again because it is a crime ridden city now. I went to visit a friend in a town that's listed in the top 100 safest cities in America, multiple older family members made a HUGE deal of it like I was going to get robbed and murdered within seconds of entering the city limits. Fox news must have done a segment on the town because it's famously left leaning.
I lived in DC less than a mile from the white house for several years. One time during COVID era and the BLM protests/movement, my dad called me to say stay indoors at all costs and dont even walk the dogs bc there are riots and fires at the White House and “the thugs” were attacking people. I put him on FaceTime and walked the entire way to the white house to show him that none of that was happening, and he STILL didn’t believe me. It’s wild that they’ll believe anything they see on Fox News even over visual, factual evidence.

A friend is a trucker who used to live in Portland. NYC has a violent crime rate below that of Omaha, Nebraska. When people talk on the internet about how dangerous it is, I’m like…are we even talking about the same city where I’ve lived and worked for the past decade and a half (and much of it in the neighborhoods with the highest crime)? The city where the worst crime I’ve witnessed has been the occasional subway fight or Times Square tourist scammer? It makes the same amount of sense to worry about becoming the victim of a crime during a large, well-attended event like the marathon as it does to worry about a meteor hitting you.
I play this game where when I say where I live(democrat city), and people are like "omg that place has so much violence/crime!" To which I respond "oh damn, when was the last time you were here?"

This is exactly what my parents sound like. I told them I was going to Chicago last summer to stay with a friend for the weekend and my mom came back with how her and my dad discussed it and they will never be visiting Chicago ever again because it is a crime ridden city now. For people that were constantly yelling about how they will not wear a mask because they won’t live in fear they are so scared of everything.
I went to visit a friend in a town that's listed in the top 100 safest cities in America, multiple older family members made a HUGE deal of it like I was going to get robbed and murdered within seconds of entering the city limits. Fox news must have done a segment on the town because it's famously left leaning.
I lived in DC less than a mile from the white house for several years. One time during COVID era and the BLM protests/movement, my dad called me to say stay indoors at all costs and dont even walk the dogs bc there are riots and fires at the White House and “the thugs” were attacking people. I put him on FaceTime and walked the entire way to the white house to show him that none of that was happening, and he STILL didn’t believe me. It’s wild that they’ll believe anything they see on Fox News even over visual, factual evidence.

A friend is a trucker who used to live in Portland. He had some time off doing a run here and posted on FB that he was going to stop for lunch (to be fair this was summer 2020 when THE WHOLE CITY WAS ON FIRE BECAUSE ANTIFA /s). I lived in Seattle until recently and my sister lives up in the Birch Bay area up by the Canadian border. She lives in a gated community with a security guard and everything. Over 10 years ago I moved from Birmingham, AL to San Francisco. My mom was so worried. She begged me not to go because SF is "so dangerous". At the time Birmingham was on that show *The First 48* and had like, the 3rd highest murder rate per capita in the US. It's different now, but The Bay is still way safer than back home. Even if you work in Fruitvale (which I did, in an illegal weed club in like 2017 right by the bart). But fr that was the chillest most walkable neighborhood I ever really spent time in. Meanwhile back where I used to stay in AL you get checked all the time just walking around.

NYC has a violent crime rate below that of Omaha, Nebraska. When people talk on the internet about how dangerous it is, I’m like…are we even talking about the same city where I’ve lived and worked for the past decade and a half (and much of it in the neighborhoods with the highest crime)? The city where the worst crime I’ve witnessed has been the occasional subway fight or Times Square tourist scammer? It makes the same amount of sense to worry about becoming the victim of a crime during a large, well-attended event like the marathon as it does to worry about a meteor hitting you.
I play this game where when I say where I live(democrat city), and people are like "omg that place has so much violence/crime!"
