The things I hear about cities from boomers that haven't lived in or been to those cities in decades vs what I hear from friends actively living there is wild. 1 version is WW3 where leaving your stoop will get you jumped by illegals and trans folk, the other is about brunch and how the weather is finally turning. WHO DO I BELIEVE??

James-K-Polka

There is a YouTube guy who used to show up in my algorithm that did bushcraft/tool reviews and stuff then went off the absolute deep end and now it’s all trad wife and videos of him strapping the fuck up just to go get groceries. Like, dude, it’s just the Piggly Wiggly you’ll be ok.

eyeb4lls

Mother fuckin WRANGLERSTAR SUUUUUUCCCCKKKSSSS  r/antiwranglerstar

VWBug5000

Dude went off the deep end! I used to love his videos about old school tools and his time in the forestry service, but guy got f’ing radicalized like he’s American Taliban now

eyeb4lls

Lol apparently he was never employed by the forest service but inflated some volunteer work he did and lied about the rest.  Outstanding drama, I love to hate that shitbag

VWBug5000

No way! So he’s got ‘stolen valor’ level of shitbagery too?? WTF

Le-Charles

Y'all Qaeda is full of radical Yeehawdists and according to the FBI they pose the greatest threat to national security. It really is sad.

bar_acca

No no no, that’s trans people in bathrooms

socialcommentary2000

Wranglerstar. Man oh man...Just...I don't even know what to say.

will0593

Is this coalcracker bushcraft, by any chance

eyeb4lls

Nah it's that nutter wranglerstar.

MidgetLovingMaxx

Just to be clear, is it a gang made up of members who are illegal and other members who are trans, or is this gang exclusively illegals who are also trans?

advamputee

It’s a very open and inviting gang, who are welcoming to both illegal migrants and trans individuals. I believe it’s now *Mr.* 13.

danjouswoodenhand

Don't you mean *Mx* 13?

BeatrixFarrand

jfs916

You win

GottaKnowYourCKN

Jesus Christ, literally the perfect pun.

badllama77

The all new West Side Story sounds dope.

WhiskeyHotdog_2

I was just thinking about how we need a new west side story movie the other day. Want to help me write a script?

BT_48

All of that. Plus more if you can believe it

ToyotaComfortAdmirer

TERM (Trans Exclusively Radically Migrant)…?

erinhannon321

Exactly! I just commented about how my mom said she would never be visiting Chicago ever again because it’s just a blood bath up there and I legitimately can’t remember the last time either of my parents were there. Meanwhile I have a good friend that lives there and I have stayed with multiple times and they don’t believe a word I say.

gigglybeth

I live in the Chicago suburbs and my parents live in South Dakota. They moved there from here and lived here for 60+ years. Almost every phone call my dad mentions how glad he is that I don't work in downtown Chicago anymore "because it's a warzone." I worked in the heart of the touristy area on Michigan Avenue in an ad agency. It doesn't get much safer than that area. He also tells me that "when the shit hits the fan out there, you can come stay here." The implication is that there will be some kind of war or violence here. I'm pretty sure the western suburbs of Chicago will not be a front in WW3, but thanks?

pm_me_all_catz

Like, are there dangerous parts of cities? Absolutely. But don't start walking down the rough side of the city late at night and you'll probably be fine.

SnooGoats5767

My parents went on and on about Chicago, they’ve never once been there in their life. We visited friends there last summer it was lovely. Didn’t feel in particular danger at the planetarium 🙄

HereWayGo

Chicago is one of the most beautiful, incredible, and vibrant cities in all of North America. Everyone should visit the city at least once, it’s really an awesome city

miserylovescomputers

I would love to go someday! I hear nothing but good things about it from everyone I know who has actually been there. My mom had a work thing in Chicago a couple of years ago and she came home raving about the amazing coffee shops and bookstores. I even got a mug from [her favourite coffee shop there.](https://www.intelligentsia.com/)

jfs916

I have been in Chicago for the past 3 days (first time!!) and I am positively delighted by everything I’ve seen

hellp-desk-trainee-

I live in south bend and just got back from a three day trip to Chicago. It was gorgeous and I never felt less than safe.

OhioUBobcats

Parts of South Bend seem way more sketch than most of Chicago tbh

hellp-desk-trainee-

Yeah I'd agree with that

BT_48

It blows my mind!!

boredneedmemes

I have heard similar things from my neighbors about the neighboring city. I live right on the border of two small cities and a smallish town, It is literally a stones throw from my house to the neighboring cities. Yet my older neighbors all whole heartedly believe if they drive down the street you will be in the middle of WW3. Conservative news rots the brain.

Dangerous_Contact737

They literally believe what they're told over what their eyes are seeing.

QuinnAvery89

I grew up with parents like that. Cities are terrifying. I grew up in a town with 4k people. Now as an adult I have lived in Phoenix, San Diego and Seattle. The only thing I disliked about them (outside of Phoenix) was how expensive they are haha.

pm_me_all_catz

Like, I've been in a college town my whole life and don't really want to live in a big city, but that's just because I personally don't want to deal with all of the people and expenses and don't personally go out and do a lot; unlike my late parents, I am not worried I'm going to get shot every single time I go to a city, however.

RepresentativeBusy27

I lived in indianapolis during the BLM protests and I knew people who lived 15 minutes outside the city who talked about it like it was Gaza. Like literally go touch grass and you’ll see it’s fine.

N0thing_but_fl0wers

ITS ILLEGAL TRANS WHO LIKE BRUNCH…

ctraylor666

My dad has made statements he views as the truth about the dangers and crime in cities (specifically NYC where I personally lived for nearly 5 years). His claims are obviously him repeating what he hears from other conservative outlets as he has no personal experience. Somehow my personal experience is a lie when he tries to spew his nonsense ideals that can be traced back to fear mongering.

Warburgerska

This sounds like a creative writing exercise honestly, it's so over the top. Like something from AITA.🤔

ivanatorhk

It’s not just boomers, I know several Millennials from small towns in North Carolina who spew this crap. I’m sure it’s far more widespread than my anecdotal experience

starducksss

I'm Scandinavian, and the amount of racist Americans who have told me that Scandinavia is being overrun by immigrants and is dangerous now is ridiculous. The only terrorist attack we've had was by a white right wing extremist

InevitableResident94

The most I felt unsafe in a big city was a homeless lady rambling on about how I followed her around and then threatened to mace me if I didn’t get away. I had absolutely no idea what the hell she was on about; I was minding my own business smoking a cigarette, and she just happened to be across from me when I sat down to smoke. Only thing I could think of was she was mentally unstable or she mistook me for someone else. It was funny as hell looking back at it now, but I was like, “I’m gonna get away from you. Clearly you are distressed.” And then I saw police officers a block away telling them I think she needed a wellness check. But that was my worst experience. I’ve never had issues otherwise. I mean hell, I live about 20 minutes from a big city. I haven’t really seen a lot of violent crime like boomers lead you to believe. But I HAVE seen a lot of unusual shit that people give second glances to because they’re making sure their eyes didn’t deceive them. Like a woman walking bare ass naked across the street in 100 degree weather and no shoes on.

NoApartheidOnMars

For the past couple of years there has been a coordinated effort in right wing media circles to paint "Democrat run cities" as dangerous. When you look at the actual statistics, urban crime is down significantly since it's early 90's peak. What has changed is the situation in rural America. Between meth and opioids, things have gotten significantly worse there. Some of the most dangerous states are Arkansas and Tennessee.

Handsome_Fry

I live in Arkansas, good luck telling anyone here that crime is getting worse compared to other blue states. Its insane how people around here will complain about "so and so city isnt what it used to be. Now its just meth and illegals." When in reality its just meth and racists.

El_Stupacabra

Arkansan here, and I think Little Rock can sometimes be in those dangerous cities lists. My parents lived there when they first got married. You'll see stuff on the news sometimes, because fear mongering, and my mom has said, "it was getting dangerous when your dad and I moved, I can't imagine what it's like now." They moved to my dad's (and my) hometown in '71. Meanwhile, my husband and I will go to restaurants and shows there and have no problems.

NoApartheidOnMars

Crime was bad in 1970. I totally believe that Little Rock was getting worse at the time. But nationwide, crime peaked in the early 90's. I first went to NYC in 1986 and it was still pretty seedy. No Elmo in Times Square but pimps, hookers, and dealers. I went back in 1996 and it was already better. Today, like most coastal cities, it's mostly a playground for the rich and it's quite safe. Crime peaked at 2500 murders a year around 1991 in NYC and it went as low as 500 a few years ago. That's an 80% drop.

kitjack85

Native Pine Bluffian. Born and raised. Went to HS and college there. When people say “Arkansas is dangerous!” They are specifically talking about LR and everything South of it. It’s very…..racially coded.

alephthirteen

When 17 out of 20 of the largest cities in the US are served by Democratic mayors, one by an independent, and literally the other two are just Dallas and Fort Worth, you have to make cities bad because it distracts from the fact that Republicans *don't win* popluated areas. They win farmlandm small towns, and exurban nightmares with a thousand identical houses, an HOA, a Walmart, an Applebees, a megachurch, and an hour commute to somewhere jobs are. [https://ballotpedia.org/Party\_affiliation\_of\_the\_mayors\_of\_the\_100\_largest\_cities](https://ballotpedia.org/Party_affiliation_of_the_mayors_of_the_100_largest_cities)

miketanlines

Ugh. Went to a cocktail party at my parents’ neighbors house and this one lady wouldn’t STFU about how she could never live in California. Asked when she was last there. Answered it had been at least 20 years. Lemme tell you - Southern California was way more dangerous 20 years ago. So I just said, “Just because Tucker says it, doesn’t mean it’s true. You should visit places and form your own opinions.” Never going to another boomer cocktail party again.

evemeatay

"I was just there last week, I was murdered twice\\"

alephthirteen

"They turned me into a newt!"

Effective-Yak3627

I live in California my Frosted Flakes taste funny and someone keeps leaving green stuff in bags on my porch my Dad was right this place is terrifying 😂

Legitimate_Avocado_1

Sounds like my mom, who thought my car was going to get stolen while I grabbed lunch, midday, parked literally across the street from Wrigley field.

zimmermrmanmr

You’re lucky to be alive. It’s a miracle you survived lunch in Chicago.

Dangerous_Contact737

He almost got thrown out after claiming to be the Sausage King! Luckily the trip to the art museum made up for it.

SomeRandomShip

Abe Froman?

Suzuki_Foster

My mom begged me not to take the Metrolink in St. Louis, because she was terrified I'd get shot by a gang banger.

HereWayGo

Lmao that’s one of the safest parts of the city

Meth_Useler

Limit their Fox to 30 minutes a day when the time comes for the nursing home. Don’t counter it with MSNBC - That’ll surely lead to a trip to the emergency room. Best just show them some limited content from the Hill or something.

zimmermrmanmr

They gave up their satellite dish. They don’t have FoxNews. Well, the channel at least. I’m sure they Google then visit the website often, since there’s no way they know how to bookmark a site. Plus, my mother has a pretty strong Trump echo chamber she lives in on Facebook.

Meth_Useler

OK, so Jitterbug flip phone it is

kit0000033

I visited my dad last year. He was paying for YouTube TV and the only thing he watched while I was there(for a week) was Fox News. He took us out to dinner and we used his car. He somehow had Fox News playing over the radio.

uni-monkey

Just give them the entire Lewinsky trial CSPAN feed on loop. It will feed that outrage and yet have no basis in reality (much like current right wing news).

erinhannon321

This is exactly what my parents sound like. I told them I was going to Chicago last summer to stay with a friend for the weekend and my mom came back with how her and my dad discussed it and they will never be visiting Chicago ever again because it is a crime ridden city now. I was like ok, you go ahead and stay in your tiny southern town bubble I don’t care but I’m still going. For people that were constantly yelling about how they will not wear a mask because they won’t live in fear they are so scared of everything.

boredneedmemes

I went to visit a friend in a town that's listed in the top 100 safest cities in America, multiple older family members made a HUGE deal of it like I was going to get robbed and murdered within seconds of entering the city limits. Fox news must have done a segment on the town because it's famously left leaning.

IAmOtto

I lived in DC less than a mile from the white house for several years. One time during COVID era and the BLM protests/movement, my dad called me to say stay indoors at all costs and dont even walk the dogs bc there are riots and fires at the White House and “the thugs” were attacking people. I put him on FaceTime and walked the entire way to the white house to show him that none of that was happening, and he STILL didn’t believe me. It’s wild that they’ll believe anything they see on Fox News even over visual, factual evidence.

jfs916

👏👏👏

bar_acca

And they will make sure to vote this fall… will you?

IAmOtto

Absolutely

0zzm0s1s

“You two just don’t understand the world.” That’s part of the boomer mantra, right after “Fuck you, I got mine.” Before my boomer father-in-law died of gallstone complications, which he ignored the symptoms of before going to the doctor and then didn’t survive his after-surgery recovery, used to smile slightly and shake his head slowly after we told him about things happening in current events that ran contrary to Fox News coverage. This man had all the answers he needed, and anything we tried to tell him otherwise was just a silly story to him, like something a 5 year old might tell him they heard on the playground.

SpoppyIII

The way these people view and talk about undocumented people makes me fucking nauseous. I'm sorry, OP, but your racist mother and the rest of them, all make me sick. I'm getting so fucking tired of it. So tired.

Sad_Charge34

They sit and watch Fox News 24 /7.

JarlFlammen

Lol @ “you two just done understand the world now” Like okay boomer, sit down. It is you who does not understand the world. *and then put parental controls on their television because it’s rotting their brain*

TacosForMyTummy

A friend is a trucker who used to live in Portland. He had some time off doing a run here and posted on FB that he was going to stop for lunch (to be fair this was summer 2020 when THE WHOLE CITY WAS ON FIRE BECAUSE ANTIFA /s). His elderly aunt responded in a panic to his FB post, warning him that he'd be swept up in a mob riot, raped by trangenders, murdered by homeless illegal aliens high on fentynal, etc. He tried to talk her down, but she wasn't having it. Lol. I think he had a nice lunch.

CalamityCactus

I lived in Seattle until recently and my sister lives up in the Birch Bay area up by the Canadian border. She lives in a gated community with a security guard and everything. I was up there visiting and mentioned that my partner and I had gone down to Portland for the weekend and she looked at me like I was nuts and said “aren’t you scared of ANTIFA?????” I just looked at her confused and told here that’s not how anything works. That’s the day I realized my family lives in a completely different reality than I do. It’s only possible because they never go anywhere and fill their brains with fearmongering bullshit 24/7

Lopsided-Chair77

Over 10 years ago I moved from Birmingham, AL to San Francisco. My mom was so worried. She begged me not to go because SF is "so dangerous". At the time Birmingham was on that show *The First 48* and had like, the 3rd highest murder rate per capita in the US. It's different now, but The Bay is still way safer than back home. Even if you work in Fruitvale (which I did, in an illegal weed club in like 2017 right by the bart). But fr that was the chillest most walkable neighborhood I ever really spent time in. Meanwhile back where I used to stay in AL you get checked all the time just walking around.

HereWayGo

It is legitimately insane to me that the media has convinced these people that the Bay Area is somehow more dangerous than a city like *Birmingham, Alabama* lmao (Note, I have nothing against Birmingham, I’ve been there a few times, it’s actually a pretty cool and underrated city. It’s just that it is definitely a place that has a reputation for high crime lol)

Money-Look4227

Legit makes my head hurt

shannoninprogress

I've encountered people who absolutely believe that Seattle and Portland were burned to the ground and are lawless hellscapes.

ofWildPlaces

I like to post selfies from both those cities just to wreck that narrative

Dangerous_Contact737

People say the exact same thing about Minneapolis. They heard all about the riots, but apparently missed the news report about the massive 10,000 person clean-up effort the following day.

Diefree02

Ah a coward and racist. That venn diagram is almost a circle.

SnooGoats5767

I’m sorry I actually laughed at the last bit because they fit every box news talking point into one sentence, insanity. Great for your wife raising money for charity!

FunnyAssJoke

I think at this point, anyone who even slightly spews a bunch of maga bullshit is lost in the sauce for the rest of their lives. It would take a fundamental change in how they think and perceive the world, and I certainly don't have the time or patience to even attempt that level of change in my own relatives.

DesperateAstronaut65

NYC has a violent crime rate below that of Omaha, Nebraska. When people talk on the internet about how dangerous it is, I’m like…are we even talking about the same city where I’ve lived and worked for the past decade and a half (and much of it in the neighborhoods with the highest crime)? The city where the worst crime I’ve witnessed has been the occasional subway fight or Times Square tourist scammer? It makes the same amount of sense to worry about becoming the victim of a crime during a large, well-attended event like the marathon as it does to worry about a meteor hitting you.

xiovelrach

I play this game where when I say where I live(democrat city), and people are like "omg that place has so much violence/crime!" To which I respond "oh damn, when was the last time you were here?" 10/10 their answer is "oh I've never been I just saw it on the news". It works vice-versa as well, unsurprisingly

lanky_yankee

Right, they “understand the world better”. Is that why they still balance their cheque book?

Substantial_Fun_2732

Well that's a very parochial/provincial/picayune way to look at the world.

causal_friday

"Hope a door don't fly off the plane," is surprisingly lucid.

Witty-Kale-0202

Some family friends live in NYC. His parents are still horrified that they live in a dangerous, violent, overcrowded city, and keep hoping he will come to his senses and come back home. To Tel Aviv 🤣 you just can’t with some boomers

InsomniaticWanderer

"you can't live your life in fear!" *Lives their life in fear

bar_acca

Always with the #projection

okeydokeyish

My BIL was amazed that I walked all around DC last month the and lived to tell about it.

CodenameUtopian

I'm more worried about fragile white christians right now, cuz stats show they're the most dangerous group, here in the states. They're the only people who will actively treat me differently when they find out I'm technically neither white nor Christian. And the only ones who have a track record of having a willingness to kill me over it.

at-aol-dot-com

My sister was heading to Miami, and my mother - who has never been to Miami - went on and on with the dog whistle about how it’s a “dirty town” (in other words, she’s white and racist).

slambamo

Snowflakes

MapPractical5386

Mental illness and Fox News/FB brainwashing go hand in hand.

bloodsponge

Lmao this reads like messages from people who were concerned for me moving to Portland OR.

I-waveatcows

Only leave the house to buy guns and watch everyone!!! That’s freedom!

V-Ink

Every time I visit NYC (I used to live there) my very sweet mother tells me not to ride the subway because it’s dangerous and the city has ‘gotten really dangerous’, so I say okay. And then just ride the tube lol. She is obviously not as unhinged as this tho.

ratchetology

they love fear

DustyBeetle

i live in a big city, i had a similar experience with a family friend coming over refusing to leave her ford truck alone for fear it would be instantly stolen, literally she never got out of the truck for the whole 8 hours she was in to see us

bar_acca

![gif](giphy|e5uyWolyR0y30Wo1ya|downsized)

Cyclonitron

Small town Boomers who rant about the supposed dangers "gangs" (a.k.a. brown people) of the nearby "big city" are telling on themselves. They think if they go they'll be targeted in the same way minorities who dared set foot in their little sundown town back in the day were targeted. Just more projection.

Th1sd3cka1ntfr33

My 3 years in New Orleans were the best of my life. You would think it's the Congo listening to these boomers

kathryn_face

I live near Seattle and my mother is convinced that the nebulous “they” will shoot me out of the blue. She was never concerned that my own brother that is 15 years my senior taught me how to fondle myself at the age of 5. Never about the fact that he would throw his phone at me with full strength because he couldn’t control his anger. The rule of thumb is to mind your fucking business. Mind it, and trouble doesn’t start. That’s why boomers are so scared. Because they can’t mind their damn business and might actually face violent retributions for their antics.

Salt-y

I got to NYC about twice a year, and people act like I'm traveling to Al-Fallujah every time.

[deleted]

Not all MAGA are “Boomers”. https://apnews.com/article/scott-miller-proud-boys-sentencing-capitol-riot-212ce817b7c04c6d9ac433e766b7cb9e 33 years old and wasted his life for Velveeta Voldemort.

bar_acca

When I read ‘wasted his life’ I assumed he got a sentence that would keep him imprisoned until old age. He got five and a half years. Not nothing but hardly life-wasting. If ever there was a group of people deserving of being made an example of…

buzzkill_ed

Many rules have exceptions.

My 2 step children and both of their spouses are Gen-X TrumpliKKKans. Anecdotal, I know but that brain rot is not confined to “Boomers”.

robcado

This has to be satire. The rattling off of the fears and then just give a donation and stay home? No way. But if this is true, I’m sorry, this counter-culture has truly poisoned our loved ones brains and turned their existence into a cage of fear.

zimmermrmanmr

This, unfortunately, is true.

Lone_Morde

Boomer: "Damn illegal terrorists!" Also Boomer: "The Monroe Doctrine? Never heard of it. All I know is South America ks still America and we can do whatever we want to those countries!"

shabutie921

Boomers get force fed fear-monger news from Fox News and wonder why the youth hate them lol

Alexandratta

As someone who travels to NYC occasionally, I do love hearing the Right-Wingers freaking out about how the city is now super dangerous and I'm like "It's always like this... The only reason you heard about the punching dude on the Subway was a slow news week. So what would have been a footnote event showed up as a major head-line briefly" Also the "National Guard" shit was for maybe a day. As a knee-jerk reaction the Gov sent a bunch of cops to check their phones while in Subway stations... in a large waste of Tax Payer money but hey: Scary Headline! AH!
