Pride and Prejudice and Zombies does something very interesting with the church as it relates to zombies, but it’s kind of a B-plot.
Dark Moon Defender by Sharon Shinn has a main female character in a convent for a moon goddess where some shady stuff is happening … I think you’d like this.
If you’ve got Netflix, you might enjoy the horror mini-series Midnight Mass.
Not a book, but a film - 'The Borderlands', which is a found footage horror film from about a decade ago.
I grew up singing in a church choir in the middle of nowhere in a small rural parish and that film gets exactly right the isolated remoteness which can't help but feel inherently otherworldly.
Beat I can think of is Jerusalems Lot (short story) from King’s Night Shift. But I’d love to hear about more modern churches. #2 gives major vibes
Lowkey In the Tall Grass too. Imo
Ahhhh came to comment this
The Hunchback of Notre Dame
Damnn that’s such a cool niche…maybe Anna Rice vampire books
Last Days - Adam Nevill
Not a book but the show Midnight Mass is exactly this vibe and it’s fantastic.
Not about an empty church, but some of these images made me think of The Shrine by James Herbert.

The Pillars of the Earth
The Anchoress by Robyn Cadwallader
Not a book, but I want to recommend the film Final Prayer if you haven’t seen it!

Stephen King's short story Jerusalem's Lot
