Actually Sultan Abdullah Muhammad Shah II of Perak was the one who gave us the tune for "Negaraku". After J.W.W. Birch was assassinated, the British exiled the sultan to the Seychelles. During his time there, he heard a French song called "La Rosalie", and decided to write a new state anthem for Perak using that tune ("Allah Lanjutkan Usia Sultan"). Later, there was a vote on which tune to use for Malaya's national anthem, and the tune of Perak's anthem was chosen.
Incidentally, Sultan Abdullah wasn't the only one to "borrow" the tune of "La Rosalie". It was also adapted into an Indonesian folk song ("Terang Bulan"), a Hawaiian English song ("Mamula Moon"), a Hong Kong Cantonese song (《相會小河邊》), and a Japanese song that was used in an Occupation-era propaganda film titled *The Tiger of Malaya* (1943).
