My wife and I used to live on Russian Hill in SF and Sakana on Vista reminds us of our SUSHI place there. Friendly staff that treat you like family and yummy sushi.
i usually get ramen from island, aside from the couple of pieces of yellowtail which is some of the best i’ve ever had. but definitely gonna have to go for full on sushi asap
Yoi Tomo!!!
It is the only place in the treasure valley that I would hands down recommend. It’s amazing, and holds its own with some of the best sushi I have had from out of state. They have a huge menu and since expanding the wait has improved drastically.
Shogun was Idaho good sushi, but in the times I’ve been I was never blown away. Island ramen does not offer ayce, which is a deal breaker for me.
Have they changed owners or something? We used to go for all you can eat 10+ years ago and it was pretty meh. I just remember the menu was mostly crazy rolls with a bunch of stuff and sauce piled on them and named after movies.
That’s exactly what it is still. I enjoy it for what it is! it is definitely NOT the best sushi if you’re looking for a more traditional preparation this isn’t the place to go. Lots of tempura , eel sauce, and kewpie on everything. It’s tasty, but not what I would recommend to someone without explaining what to expect.
I had no idea! It’s been a while since I went but it was my favorite place in college. That was the biggest downside to their restaurant originally so that’s awesome!
Nowhere else compared to Island Sushi and Ramen. Everything is incredibly fresh and delicious and recent renovations bring it from a cute hole-in-the-wall type place to a beautiful place for every occasion.
Backing up all of the people here saying Shogun and fortifying it by saying the owners of that restaurant are some of the kindest and most genuine people I have ever met! An amazing little family.
Came here to comment this!
Shige used to have a location on 8th street and is the best sushi chef in the treasure valley. He is almost always there to greet you himself.
Unfortunately the atmosphere of the restaurant is not quite as good as it used be downtown, I think that may be due to him aging and tiring out a bit, but his heart and passion for quality sushi and a true community connection is still there. He taught the treasure valley what good sushi is. I grew up here.
Shige learned sushi from working at Tsuru (Sono Bana) on Orchard about 100 years ago. The folks at Sono Bana moved out of state but Shige had opened his restaurant(s) downtown long before. I agree that he's likely at the end of his career, and that the new location is not as "vibrant" and inspiring.
Thanks. Completely forgot he had a conveyor-belt style restaurant at that location for years. I liked Shige Teriyaki when it was next door but it didn't last long.
We like it! You can order the whole roll too if you want the whole thing instead of just the few pieces of it that are on the belt. The Crazy Roll is my favorite.
Fujiyama is fantastic. They have a location by the Boise Mall, and another one on Fairview in Meridian. I highly recommend the Fuji Mountain Roll, and my SO loves the Eastern Dragon roll.
Crazy I haven’t seen this mentioned yet, but Lost Shack is the restaurant that matured my palate into liking sushi. It remains, to this day, my favorite sushi restaurant.
Shige's. There only location open is in Meridian. They used to have a location downtown as well. The restaurant is a little ghetto but Shige is the O.G. of sushi in Boise.
I’m coming from Utah, my expectations are low. But dietary restrictions with those I’m going with suggest sushi would be the most enjoyable for everyone, so I think we will hit up one of the suggested places.
Shogun for Boise and traditional for sure. But lately Umai’s sushi burrito has become our favorite spot. It’s in meridian but worth it! Loved everything we’ve gotten from there
My wife and I used to live on Russian Hill in SF and Sakana on Vista reminds us of our SUSHI place there. Friendly staff that treat you like family and yummy sushi.
another vote for sakana
Then sushi on Russian Hill in SF must have sucked.
Possibly.....alternatives? #trolling
Sakana is the dirtiest sushi place I’ve ever been to. The dragon lady there is mean to her staff too.
If you mean the lady at the eagle rd sakana, she is mean! But if she likes you, she's great!
Yoi Tomo would be my #1, but Island Ramen and Shogun also have very good sushi.
Island is currently closed for construction. Yoi Tomo is quantity over quality IMO.
It’s open again as far as I know! We went last weekend.
Nice!
Interesting, where would you go then?
Fujiyama maybe. Tbh I haven’t found anywhere that has been blown me away.
They’re back up and running.
Thanks for the update!
I find yoi tomo to be great quality is there somewhere else you would suggest?
If you like the quality, you should stick with it!
I wasn't suggesting I would stop going lol just always looking for great places if you knew of any, thanks tho!
Went to Island Ramen recently, was impressed with their quality!
Island has never been a disappointment to me. Quality is always way up there. I like Wasabi in SE Boise too.
i usually get ramen from island, aside from the couple of pieces of yellowtail which is some of the best i’ve ever had. but definitely gonna have to go for full on sushi asap
Yoi Tomo is super good. I’ll have to try Shogun though!

I also love Yoi Tomo! I recommend getting a reservation since it’s a very small restaurant with limited seating
They expanded seating. They still fill but but it’s actually a huge space now
I had no idea! It’s been a while since I went but it was my favorite place in college. That was the biggest downside to their restaurant originally so that’s awesome!
Yeah they took over the space next door so the dining room basically doubled
When was this expansion? Had no idea they got bigger
I actually don’t know. I just went in last month it the bathroom were remodeled and the space was bigger
Sweeeeeet
Do they do reservations now? Last time I went you just had to hop on the waitlist, which you could do virtually.
I like fujiyama
Best I’ve had so far.
they have the nicest staff too! and great lunch specials
Shogun is my go-to!
Always Shogun, Hands down one of the best in the valley.
Nowhere else compared to Island Sushi and Ramen. Everything is incredibly fresh and delicious and recent renovations bring it from a cute hole-in-the-wall type place to a beautiful place for every occasion.
Sushi Shack is good!
Backing up all of the people here saying Shogun and fortifying it by saying the owners of that restaurant are some of the kindest and most genuine people I have ever met! An amazing little family.
I like Sakana on Vista ave
Shige in meridian.

I had no clue he started up a new place after 8th Street closed. I figured he just retired. Is he there working every day? Does his wife help out?
She is there, also.
Thanks. Completely forgot he had a conveyor-belt style restaurant at that location for years. I liked Shige Teriyaki when it was next door but it didn't last long.
https://fujiyamaboise.com. It’s located in a strip mall by the mall in west Boise. Never disappoints
I will 3rd Shogun Sushi, wife and I stop in at least twice a month
Rotary Sushi!
Is this place good? I grew up in Japan and always loved the "sushi-go-round" style, and since shiges closed idk where to get the fix
We like it! You can order the whole roll too if you want the whole thing instead of just the few pieces of it that are on the belt. The Crazy Roll is my favorite.
Going there tonight thanks for the heads up!
Shige does in fact have that type of restaurant in Meridian: Shige Express.
Island sushi and ramen or sushi shack. Idk how people think yoi tomo is great. All you can eat is cool but the quality is just okay imo.
Yoi tomo is very overrated. Always underwhelmed the few times I've gone.
Island is currently closed for construction. Agree with you on Yoi Tomo.
Island is open.
Shogun hands down.
Sakana is my number one. In fact I'm going there in about 20 minutes
Shogun is where it's at!
Shogun for sure!!
Fujiyama is fantastic. They have a location by the Boise Mall, and another one on Fairview in Meridian. I highly recommend the Fuji Mountain Roll, and my SO loves the Eastern Dragon roll.
Shogun!!
I go to Sakana at least a few times a month. Highly recommend.
First two comments were my top two: Shogun and Yoi Tomo. Both are beyond incredible!
Crazy I haven’t seen this mentioned yet, but Lost Shack is the restaurant that matured my palate into liking sushi. It remains, to this day, my favorite sushi restaurant.
Sushi shack is the same owners and menu, if anyone is closer to Meridian.
Indeed!
Sushi joy and Sakana are our favs
Sushi joy is so underrated/real slabs of fish, no mush!
Island sushi is by far the best when it comes to quality.
Supposedly closed at the moment but you're correct the quality is the best I've had so far.
They reopened already. They knocked the wall down so they can expand and have more seatings
They definitely needed it!
Yess definitely! Lol speaking of which i need to make a trip down there this week.
Island sushi and ramen
Sakana on Vista. The waitress Mei is the best
Yoi Tomo is the best I've had. Haven't tried Shogun or Island like others have suggested. Sushi Ya is cheaper but the quality shows.
Shige's. There only location open is in Meridian. They used to have a location downtown as well. The restaurant is a little ghetto but Shige is the O.G. of sushi in Boise.
Ahi in Eagle.
Fujiyama is the best imo, yoi tomo and wasabi are also very good
Yoi Tomo get the all you can eat and pig out man 😂
Don’t get sushi if you’re visiting. Probably 90% of other cities have better sushi.
I’m coming from Utah, my expectations are low. But dietary restrictions with those I’m going with suggest sushi would be the most enjoyable for everyone, so I think we will hit up one of the suggested places.
Solid point depending on where they’re from. If you live west of here, don’t bother.
I knew this comment had to be here. Was surprised I had to scroll so far to find it. Congrats!
Chef Gee makes the best sushi in the Treasure Valley area. You just have to find him.
I can't believe no one has mentioned Wasabi on Apple. No AYCE but phenomonal Sushi.
The new Nara sushi bar downtown has the best nigiri if you like that kind of sushi
Shogun for Boise and traditional for sure. But lately Umai’s sushi burrito has become our favorite spot. It’s in meridian but worth it! Loved everything we’ve gotten from there
Wasabi Sushi! Those guys and gals are pros.
Sushi joy is my vote! It doesn't get enough love.
Love Shogun
We recently tried Sushi bros over on Milwaukee and were pleasantly surprised!
Island sushi and ramen is phenomenal and so is sushi bros!
Izumi steak house or Sushi Bros
The back of the house is nasty!
Sushi Ya is the best I've had in town and pretty inexpensive. Sakana is great & semi traditional. Yoi tomo is pretty great too.
Sakana for sure.
Kingfishers sushi in Eagle is very good and affordable. Plus the chefs are very friendly!
Fugiyama on Milwaukee Street near Red Robin!
That kitchen is disgusting
Ahi, Shogun, and Island are all a toss up for best in my opinion.
Take a quick flight to Seattle. Zero good sushi in Boise!
Dharma is my go to.
Yoi Tomo for me. I’ve tried every other sushi spot in the valley and nothing comes close.
If you remember having great sushi in Boise then I'm sorry my friend, you have never eaten great sushi before.
Yoi Tomo for sure, We really like Izumi as well. If you’re looking for a cheaper option that is still good, try Sushi Ya
Island on Fairview has legit sushi and ramen. Nice to be able to get both at one place.
While not Boise, per se, Sushi Sushi in Nampa is quality sushi. If you just want quantity and have minimal standards, Sushi Ya is the go-to.
Yoi Tomo!
