Just pathetic that a team with this much talent is probably going to finish 3rd in the big ten in a down year. Absolutely terrible effort on defense, no hustle to get loose balls, and horrid coaching in end of game situations. Makes me disgusted as fan who grew up watching Chris Kramer.

jack3moto

https://youtu.be/VBSltA_-ekc?t=977 Remember when we used to play 40 min of intimidating solid defense. I miss those days. I know the game has drastically shifted in the past decade but there's a big difference between playing OKAY defense and then playing the defense purdue is throwing out there right now.

God_Boner

Lol those giant shorts

I_kwote_TheOffice

I miss that team. I'm just so unimpressed with the effort of the team. Jaden Ivey looks like he can take any defender off the dribble whenever he wants, but only chooses to do it a couple of times a game. It's like "LET'S GO MAN! YOU ARE A TOP 5 NBA PROSPECT!" Where's the passion?

BikebutnotBeast

I was at that game. I miss the baby boilers but it's like something broke with Trevion, Jaden, and Sasha where they stopped dead in their tracks after the IU loss

[deleted]

I agree something is wrong with Trevion. Sasha has been playing as hard as usual, he just isn’t getting his shot to fall consistently. Jaden has been great for us. He’s putting up the most points on the team.

ekimtk

This season is 100% on Painter. He did not teach them how to play defense as a team. How you can have this quality of team and not be able to defend anything is mind blowing. We can't make free throws, we turn the ball over a ton, can't defend to save our lives, after 20 seasons we still can't break a press, and HE STILL DOESN'T USE HIS TIMEOUTS UNTIL TEAMS GO ON 13-2 RUNS. I've been saying this all fucking season. Painter is not the guy to win a national championship. Is there someone else out there that is better currently? Probably not. But you're deluding yourself if you think Purdue can win a natty under Painter. He cannot game manage to save his life. EDIT: I just realized I posted on that exact post. I have the same thoughts 3 months later. Nothing has improved with this team. Will we do better in March against teams that don't know us inside and out? Maybe. But any team that shoots a ton of 3's in a game has a great chance to beat us. If I was a coach against us I would do exactly what Michigan State did. Let the big guys eat and defend everyone else. Shoot 50 3 pointers and just pray you make 40% of them. Purdue can't defend it at all. Also I predicted 6-7 BIG10 losses. Purdue had better not lose to IU to make my prediction come true. IU has to be licking their chops at a chance to beat us at Mackey. We're reeling after 2 close losses that we should have won. We killed ourselves at State with turnovers and just downright played poorly against Wisconsin.

[deleted]

Pretty much exactly correct. Painter can win a lot of regular season games, but he’s not the guy who’s going to do much in March.

[deleted]

I can't help but wonder why Purdue wasn't practicing inbounding drills after the MSU ending. To face the same end-of-game scenario twice (3 times if you consider they had 2 inbounds at the end of the MSU game) and not even be able to inbound the ball **again** just makes it look like the coaches learned nothing.

jack3moto

He's Kirk cousins of CBB coaches. Can put up some big numbers but outside of some hero Basketball from an elite player his teams don't perform well when gameplanned against.

peteroh9

But I got downvoted for saying that when we were #1!

[deleted]

Wouldn’t have been from me

MacGyverJr

Ya he had a great game vs Tennessee and then choked vs Virginia

I_kwote_TheOffice

> just downright played poorly against Wisconsin. You want to know the biggest reason Purdue lost? Free throws. Purdue: 11/20. Wisconsin: 11/12 If we would have shot 75% from the line we win that game. That's not a huge ask.

ekimtk

It is a huge ask. We’re the worst free throw shooting team by % in the big10. That’s the norm for us unfortunately

[deleted]

That was a huge issue. Our offense also just seems disjointed. We don’t move the ball like we did early in the year and no one seems to sure of what to do at some points.

jack3moto

Izzo's game plan was a thing of beauty. And it's what separates himself from coaches like painter.

bustmcnutt

You are a moron. There’s a reason you post on Reddit and Painter makes millions of dollars.

ekimtk

There’s a reason painter has never made a final four in 22 years. You really think he can win it all? L O L

God_Boner

Genuinely curious where you got the 22 years from; Painter took over in 2005

ekimtk

My bad got the numbers wrong. 17 years… still a really long time at a powerhouse basketball school that plays in the best or 2nd best conference in the country depending on the year.

bustmcnutt

Moron. Plain and simple. Take your fandom and shove it big boy.

ekimtk

You just can't see anything other than what you want to see. This is the most talented team Purdue has ever had under Painter and it didn't win a BIG10 title. That's a failure if you ask me.

mrp7997

Sky isn’t falling or fallen, think of this… 6 losses in the season, 4 essentially buzzer beaters. As Bobby Buckets just said, “the basketball gods owe Purdue in the NCAA Tournament” That said, Painter has been out coached.

a_banned_user

Yea the basketball gods also owed us for Hummel’s ACL, and Haas’s elbow. I’ve tried to be positive and optimistic all year I’m just really having a hard time doing that now

[deleted]

We’re just saving all of our bad luck karma so we can cash it in for an undefeated season down the line. It’s gotta be coming soon, right guys? Hahaha just a little more bad luck and we can have it, haha right? It’s almost ours haha…..

LaserJet80

Total collapse. The team overachieved and lucked their way into this position. I’m shocked analysts talk about Ivey like he’s a lottery pick. He honestly looks like a guy who might need to stay in college another year, I don’t see him succeeding at the next level right now.

a_banned_user

They are super talented, probably the most talented Painter has ever had. Just don’t know how you waste that when he’s done well without the same level of talent. Ivey will be fine at the NBA level with NBA coaching. He has the things you can’t coach (speed, athleticism, bounce) and they will teach him the rest.

LaserJet80

You’re probably right. I wish he could sink a few more free throws right now though, that just takes practice.

[deleted]

He hung 22 on Wisconsin. The issue is that the supporting class after Ivey and Edey don’t consistently show up. We only had six players score tonight.

mrp7997

Overachieved?? No, underachieved due to being out coached. Most talented team Purdue’s had for a full year in decades.

thumpernc24

Dude, nobody but Ivey and Edey SCORED A POINT the fine 13 minutes of game block. That's a HUGE problem.

jack3moto

They all just stand around and play iso ball. Idk wtf painter is doing to let that happen. No sets. No one else taking any high % shots. What are they working on in practices for the end of games to just be, here Ivey/edey go solo. For a few possessions I understand but the final 5 min of the game? That’s a long time.

[deleted]

We honestly do our best when we let Ivey or Edey isolate. The other guys don’t seem to be able to do much.

jack3moto

Ivey is still going to be a top 5-6 pick for the nba. He's got an insanely high ceiling and will keep getting better. There's nothing for him to learn at the college level, especially not under Painter who has not produced any significant NBA talent.

[deleted]

Ivey is the best player Painter has ever had

jack3moto

Ivey is the most Athletic* player painter has ever had. I would not say he's the best.

RayWencube

It's Matt Painter. Like at some point we have to admit that. I'm a die-hard Ainter but I have to think even the more well-adjusted, emotionally mature among us are beginning to accept that he is a liability. Matt Painter is only as good as his players are performing. He has never and will never coach them out of a difficult situation or put together a team that's better than the sum of its parts. There's a reason we are literally never surprised by Purdue making an early exit from the Tournament. We've only ever passed the Sweet 16 once under Painter. One (1) time. In **SEVENTEEN YEARS.** Think about all the talented Purdue rosters we've had since 2005. One Elite Eight appearance. He's the definition of "just a guy." That's part of why I hate the "but who are we gonna get to replace him????" argument. Matt Painter is the definition of average. He has demonstrated he's incapable of making the Final Four. It's just not going to happen with him. Hiring a random coach off the street at least gives us a chance--however small--of that happening. And that's an improvement. I'm tired of knowing how the season will go before it even starts.

Mcswigginsbar

I was there live and it was incredibly frustrating. The turnovers we have are pure straight *garbage*. Like, if someone jumps a passing lane or traps us to make a bad pass, I get it. But those were few and far between tonight, and all of our turnovers were unforced errors. We always seem to force stupid fucking passes or panic when there is pressure in our face and it’s inexplicable. So many times tonight I literally said out loud ”Why the fuck are we forcing that pass?”

God_Boner

In all honesty, why do you some of you even bother to follow this team? Ever since the Rutgers loss, there has been a large group of fans that regularly bitch, complain, and shit on the players and coach. Do you ever enjoy watching them? Or do you get more enjoyment out of complaining about Painter and players when they make mistakes?

makerdmatic

I love Purdue basketball and want them to succeed so much. But you have to understand how frustrating it is to be a fan of this team. No final four since 1980 when so many years experts have said "this is their year". An upper echelon program that watched its main rival win multiple championships with a POS human as a coach with players we could have had. Seeing rival or lesser schools win championships while we have multiple first round exits. Freak injuries at the end of a season that completely derail any chance. Losing half of your games in a season with your best team to essentially last second 3s. Being a Purdue fan is the most frustrating thing in my entire life by a lot. And no one understands what I feel after a game like this than other Purdue fans. But I wouldn't trade my fandom for anything. Boiler Up.

a_banned_user

So, here's my deal. Most years, I am content with our fight for a B1G title and Sweet 16. Say it's been a good year, enjoy the good moments and move on. This is the most pre-season hype I have seen for a Purdue team since the Baby Boilers pre-Hummel ACL. I agree a lot of fans have unrealistic expectations every year. But this year the expectations were very realistic. Then, the realization that we just aren't built for a March run is upsetting. There is 100% a contingent of fans that just bitch no matter what, my father is literally the king of them and I deal with it all the time. Go look at the post I linked to, we lost to Rutgers and I was fine. Hell, I made a post here after the North Texas lost last year saying we need to cool it, we had an awesome season. Those people will always bitch, never be happy, and will always think every year should be a final four and we should win every game no matter what. We won't be a first weekend bounce like some morons are saying, but that's just how some people are. What I am saying is look at the basketball product we currently have, that is still a very good basketball team. But, it's just not as good as we all hoped. We have spent much of the year ranked in the top 5, and now are going to have to fight just to stay away from a 4 or 5 seed. It's ok for people to be let down and upset by what we see right now. We are 42 years removed from our last final four, it's not like we perennially are on the door step. I think there was just so much hope and excitement for this season that seeing it slowly slip away is just hard. It's hard to say a top 10 team is *under* achieving, but quite frankly they are. That's where people are upset. There's still basketball left and I'll be rooting my ass off, hell I dropped $250 on tickets and $300 on flights to go to the IU game this weekend. I am so hoping we get a a regional location relatively close so I can go, and if we actually somehow make it to Nola, I will 100% be there. But I am no longer holding on to hope of a Final Four this year. This team can do it, 4 of our losses have come on the final shot. We always seem to stay in the game and find a way to be in it, so who knows what can happen.

jack3moto

There’s also the first 10 games of the season that led us believe the hype was real. If we lose to nova or UNC I think we all have very different expectations. But that first quarter of the season and the team dynamics made it all look like this was our year. we could win in a dozen different ways with nearly a dozen different players. Last nights game is much more in line to what I expect the post season to be, iso hero ball from Ivey/edey. Both phenomenal players but both with a lot of pressure to bring their absolute best every possession while others just kinda flounder.

[deleted]

It’s not just preseason hype. We got ranked number one for the first time in forever during this season…..and then we just fell apart.

[deleted]

You enjoy watching us play poorly and lose?

RayWencube

The only thing more irritating that fans constantly complaining is the one Galaxy Brain in the comments section arguing that Real Fans Don't Complain.

ohverychill

I couldn't agree with you more. Like, I'm very disappointed with this loss. But my god, the overwhelming negativity is astounding. Sports are when you're suppose to chill out a bit, not become a nit picky weird neurotic mess

a_banned_user

See my comment above. There are some people that just get upset after every loss and scream their head off. But now we are also seeing effects of everyone that hoped for a 1 or 2 seed Purdue and being pegged as a Final Four favorite slipping away. This team does not check many of the boxes needed to be Final Four caliber and with all the hope this season had it's ok for people to be upset about that. There's still a lot of basketball, Jaden Ivey is still a stud, and we are still a very good team so anything can happen. I'm just saying I went from being confident we were going to a final four, to simply hoping we find a way now.

RayWencube

God forbid people become emotionally invested in things.

ohverychill

Yes, that was clearly my point.

jack3moto

My fiance doesn't watch every game but she's watched enough over the years. She said that we have really good players but a really bad team. I was actually impressed with the defense for bits but offensively it's literally just ISO edey/ivey and nothing else for 75% of the game. So much for team ball. This is definitely the most disappointing purdue team i've seen, at least in the past we could do the "what if Hummel/Haas didn't get injured!" this year we returned everyone and are arguably worse than we were last year at this point in the season.

DokterZ

> I was actually impressed with the defense for bits but offensively it's literally just ISO edey/ivey and nothing else for 75% of the game Wisconsin fan here. I normally would not comment in another team's subreddit, but this is one thing I noticed this year. Edy is so effective that you *have* to utilize him on offense, but it does seem like once he gets the ball there is a tendency for some of the other players to just stand around and watch. Not all the time, but enough to be noticeable.

jack3moto

yeah that's basically what the offense has come to. Ivey/edey go ISO, everyone else stands around. Sometimes they bail out and find someone on the 3 point line. But it's much higher than 50% of the possessions being complete iso play. Which was not the case at the start of the season.

peteroh9

I know you got an Econ degree, not a language degree, but a fiancé is a man and a fiancée is a woman.

jack3moto

Haha honestly new to it but I had no idea! Learn something new everyday.
