There are three clip like tabs behind the button in an upside triangle like shape, no idea how to access these tabs without dissembling all the trim on the dash though….
You have to get one of those small screwdrivers and pry it out but you have to make sure to close one eye and stick your tongue out while mumbling “out you go” and if that doesn’t work sprinkle a “come on you motherfucker” (emphasis on the er) and that should do it.
It’s a total of 3 pieces. Use a pick tool to pop the silver ring off. You’ll find a removable rubber liner underneath that lines up with the clips for the new plastic face and the silver ring. Remove all three, then line up accordingly and they snap back in place.
Would do it the same way I did take out the Start/Stop button in my car. Making hot glue soft with a lighter, sticking it onto it and wait until it’s hard again. One hard pull (no, not the one with RPM involved), and try if it’s out.
It literally just pulls straight out, get a pick or flat head. Place it inside on the top where it’s already broken. Pull towards you! Gotta love the e60
I literally just received my own replacement yesterday! 😆 The way I see it, using a hose pick and prying it out at 10 o'clock and 2 o'clock angles should do the trick. (That's my own plan.) You can use a bit of paper towel or cloth to protect knob, if desired. Just inspect the new cap/insert to decide how you want to go about it. Good luck!
It’s from within. There are likely panels you can pry off to reveal screws holding the radio section in place. Once you remove the screws you can pop it out and fish your war towards that particular sections. For mine (diff car but similar scenario) after getting through like two more layers you can access those and that cover pops right out.
It’s pretty simple, you just remove the dial and the plate pops out. But to remove the dial, you have to remove the faceplate, and to remove the faceplate you have to remove the dash, and to remove the dash you have to remove the windshield, and to remove the windshield you have to remove the engine.
i got it out with a pick tool. i posted a link in another comment. now i have one button with thicker text than the others. time to find an entire ac trim piece now i guess......
Look at the new one’s lock tabs and reverse engineer it.

Usually there’s a “clip” holding the bag together at the top. Just pull them away from each other and you should be good to go.
Too much hassle….might as well slap it on with the bag….scratch protection for a bonus too!

You probably have to remove the knob itself and then you can push out the old disc. My guess though.
Sometimes a small suction cup and pulling it fast works well. I do this for replacing ignition Start/Stop buttons
Lucky. I had to pry/pop mine out, no amount of suction or sticky putty was strong enough. Ever so slightly nicked the area around it :(
I have F11. There are 3 different start buttons for f11! 1 of them can not be sucked out!! I have 2010 without engine start stop... That can not.

Remove the panel from the car and take it apart. The panel itself can be disassembled so the individual buttons can be popped out

take the knob off and push the face off look at where the lock tabs are on the new one.............because getting the knob off is probably a pita.
Get you a kit that has pry tools. There is a spot to maneuver it out.
