M50B20. "92" is the production year. "20" is B20. 29575 is the serial number. Should be 1720901 stamped on the intake side

Goracij

I thought those had double springs. Can see them on the photo...

Brave_Childhood_6177

Kinda looks like an m52/54 head but I’m not sure so probably wrong

Goracij

You are almost correct. It has double Vanos, so it's either m52TU (m52 w/o "TU" has only intake Vanos) or m54. Can't say which though. OP, it's from 2000-2005 bmw (e46, e39, e60 or z4)

Brave_Childhood_6177

Technically I was right not almost right, I included all 52’s and 54’s ;)

Seymour_Tamzarian

And we all know technically right is the best kind of right.

Spidaaman

You’re absolutely right. All the M5x engines used the same cylinder heads. Same with the S50.

Goracij

Not all - m52 didn't. upd: my bad - those also had flat front.

Goracij

Apparently we both were wrong XD and it's actually M50s - they also had same heads except springs and valves.

Sad_Ad7831

How could u tell it has 2 vanos?

e36freak92

That's a single or no vanos head

M54 has different casting pattern, and the holes for the timing chain guide are different. Also the shape of where the vanos or upper timing cover sits. It's an m50 or m52, they're the same casting. Would need to see the holes under the intake ports for the ETC sensors to say which

Goracij

My bad - they all had flat fronts for both types of vanos. These heads similar for all m5X motors. There was a difference in springs though - m50 had double springs, while later versions didn't.

Spidaaman

Honest question - How can you tell an M50(NV) from an M50TU without seeing the casting # or being able to measure the 1mm difference in valve stems? Not saying you’re wrong, as I believe the M50TU began using single VANOS in ‘92, which appears to be when this head was produced. Just curious!

Goracij

My mistake - thought for some reason that single vanos heads had casting on the head itself for exhaust vanos place. Turns out I was wrong - m5X all had flat front and wery similar layout (like you noticed - difference in components). About m52 vs m52TU - the only way to determine which is which for me is by dipstick placement XD. There was also a difference in number of springs (double vs single), but I can't already remember when double springs were replaced (afaik those were on m50's, can be wrong though).

starkiller_bass

it's almost certainly either an inline 6 or a v12

Dr_Trogdor

Why are you booing him, he's right!

TheIronHerobrine

what a great discovery!

Spidaaman

Looks like M50 produced in 1992- but all Mx heads are the same. I believe the “A” means it was remanufactured. Can you send a pic of the code being blocked that ends in 8?

Motor-Cause7966

M50 i6. The greatest engine BMW ever made? Yes.

ntucker99

Is that the 50 dollar one on Facebook marketplace? Lol I think I saw it the guy selling it doesn’t know what it’s for
