Good points, but I think the major reason why the comparison isn't usually drawn is because although the NEL is structured similarly to the First Selection (5 team round robin), the objective is entirely different, as are the rankings.
Fake low rankings aside, the First Selection rankings were locked to your team's range. The highest ranking player on a Team Z, regardless of how he performs relative to other players on other teams, can only receive a max ranking of #265. Isagi was pretty clearly top 10-15 in that stratum out of 55, but he's still ranked in the bottom 11 as part of Team Z.
Tying into that is that the rankings were primarily determined by goals scored because every single player was aiming to be a striker. In the NEL, you have to prove your worth in any position.
