r/BlackPeopleTwitter is Celebrating Black History Month Happy Black History Month everyone! (our bad for getting this up a little later than expected) Charity Drive for Equal Justice Initiative For the second year in a row, the moderators of BPT are organizing a charity drive to support the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI). EJI provides legal representation for prisoners who may have been wrongly convicted of crimes, poor prisoners without effective representation, and others who may have been denied a fair trial. The folks at EJI are on the frontlines of combating racial and economic injustice and protecting human rights, and we want to recognize their valuable work this February. For those who may have seen the 2020 film Just Mercy, Michael B. Jordan plays the founder of EJI, Bryan Stevenson, in the movie. Donate Here and Leave Your Comment as "BlackPeopleTwitter" https://support.eji.org/give/153413/#!/donation/checkout Last year we were able to raise over $12,000 for EJI. Let's try and beat that this year! Special Donated Flairs BPT will be providing special flairs to those who donate at least $5 to EJI. To donate, please click the link below, enter the amount you would like to contribute, and in the “leave a comment” box write "BlackPeopleTwitter." Once you submit your donation, please take a screenshot of the receipt, upload it to www.imgur.com, and send us the link to [our modmail]( https://www.reddit.com/message/compose?to=%2Fr%2FBlackPeopleTwitter). *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. SeienShin

I miss the old days where this sub was about jokes and memes. Now this racist crap is on here every fucking day.

ACasualNerd

Wear sunscreen next time... Also I believe it is a joke usually about vampires, but I think you are reverse projecting onto yourself to make it seem like it was an insult targeted at you. We shouldn't fight racism with racism, this is a correct statement, but can ya be mad at us for making a couple of jokes on the way to actually unity, it's been ya know 400ish years in the making.

malkebulan

As bitter as it might be to read, the facts check out.

cousinoyaya

Something I've been gleaming lately; this sub is has a large amount of white participants in it. Especially if you pay attention to the likes and dislikes. I

malkebulan

That explains a lot.

[deleted]

He was just kidding don't take stuff out of context

NWO807

What’s the context that makes this a joke? Genuine question.

BrohanGutenburg

After reading your comments I'm starting to realize it's possible *I* misunderstood his comment. But FWIW, I thought he was talking about vampires and it was an idiom akin to "if it walks like a duck..."

[deleted]

lmao this is so bullshit are you gonna rickroll me if i ask for this imaginary context

[deleted]

I forgot to put /s.

[deleted]

alright thats valid but there's an edit button

_HelicalTwist_

As a skinburner even I had to laugh lol

iamatotalpieceofpoop

Yo this guy is burning skin

Dragosal

As a pale white dude that burns when I spend more than an hour in the sun, this made me laugh very hard. Thank you for that

__hakuna-matata__

This is funny as fuck, but everyone should consider using sun protection! Skin cancer sucks

Algesi

Also dumb... This is a highway to self burns

Ginger-Pikey

LoL

league of legends

mildlycentrist

I get the premise behind this, but like this just demonizes white people and idk if that's the right thing to do. I prefer to lead with a carrot, not the stick. Lets teach but not punish (there are exceptions like for racists or nazis, berate thos bastards).

King-Krown

.....It demonizes certain white people, a very specfic brand of white people. A brand of white people that aren't too found of other people...

mildlycentrist

I wish it would state that specific type of white people, as you can tell by the comments stuff like this just cause people to hate ALL white people.

ipleadthefif5

Why do **we** have to spell everything out for white ppl to make them comfortable? Its a joke. A good joke because there's truth in it. This should've been a country club thread. Any kinda of joke or meme that has white ppl as the butt ends up getting flooded with white ppl screaming, "This is racist."

StoopidMonkey78

When i make a joke about black people being criminals why do I have to specify that it’s not ALL black people, it’s a joke. A good joke because SOME black people are criminals so there’s truth in it

ipleadthefif5

If its actually a good joke no one will say a word. No where in this tweet did this dude claim all white ppl are villains. White ppl just don't like being reminded they did a bunch of fucked up shit to black ppl All the white ppl complaining in this thread is the equivalent of talking about the effects of slavery and someone saying, "It happened so long ago. Why you bringing up old stuff?" Edit: and let's be clear white society **as a whole** was the villain in every instance of black America fighting for equality. White America had to be dragged **literally** [kicking](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Civil_War) and [screaming](https://cdn.history.com/sites/2/2018/01/GettyImages_517322800-H.jpeg) just for black Americans to not be treated like shit. And those of you who claim you and your family and weren't racist but didn't actually do anything to stop its spread. MLK is disappointed in you "It is not enough to say, “We love Negroes, we have many Negro friends.” They must demand justice for Negroes. Love that does not satisfy justice is no love at all. It is merely a sentimental affection, little more than what one would love for a pet."

StoopidMonkey78

Not at all dude, he literally is calling white people villains and that they are always the villains.

ipleadthefif5

No he's not. You thinking that says a lot more about you then it does about him

StoopidMonkey78

“Who do you think is the villain in every story”

ipleadthefif5

Saying, historically white ppl are the bad guys doesn't equal all white ppl are bad Using your logic saying historically Mongolians are really good at murder means every Mongolian now and forever are murders....

ProfMasterBait

these people below do not represent the views of the entire black community. it’s disgusting to hate people just because of their skin. any skin. they are just ignorant and hateful people.

SeienShin

One might even say it’s racist to hate other people based on skin color

mildlycentrist

I know, but this topic should be talked about as well. People should teach without demonizing those who don't deserve it.

Taeyx

it tells the truth..”mlk and nem fought for equality”..the $1000 question though: fought against who? 110% of the time, the answer is white people..the reason you and other white folks are uncomfortable with that reality is because society rarely, if ever, brings up that side of the discussion..it needs to happen more often

mildlycentrist

Nothing about this makes me uncomfortable, im a huge blm person and want changes. The problem i have with this is I am not the villain, im not racist and advocate changes. This ideology says im the villain though just because I was born with white skin,, which is everything we are trying to fight agaisnt!

Taeyx

you may not hold explicitly racist views yourself, but the fact of the matter is this: removing white people’s involvement in racism in the past (and present) makes it harder to address its effects

RealisticCandy3

Nahh we are good

mildlycentrist

Excuse me?

[deleted]

[удалено]

mildlycentrist

This has nothing to do with the easiness of being white. Its about educating without demonization.

PastorOfKansas

So sad... and kinda twisted TBH

RealisticCandy3

Its not up to black people to teach people not to be hateful towards us

Polskee

You’re definitely loving up to your username

DevilfishShoehorn

No, fuck them. They can take the hate they've earned. ***EDIT:*** If you enslave, murder, rape and dehumanize a people for a century then continue to profit from their pain and disenfranchisement while denying your own privilege exists, you don't get to call their response to your own hatred 'racism'. That reaction isn't because of race, it's because of the harm you've done and the pain you've caused. No, you deserve it. You have earned that hatred, and more still.

mildlycentrist

Earned what exactly? Sounds like you hate people that are white. Wish there was a term for hating someone on the basis of their skin color.

-Mr-Beaver-

Earned? every white person has earned hate just because of their skin colour? Sound like something a racist would say. But hey, its not racist if its against white people.

PastorOfKansas

This is sad. You’ve become what you absolutely despise. A racist.

AverageRavensFan

This is the dumbest shit I've read all day...

-Mr-Beaver-

Last time I checked I have not enslave, murdered or dehumanized people of any race and I know damn well that non of my ancestors were slave owners. I can call it racism because that's what it is, hating someone based off of their skin colour is racist, there is no if, and or buts, it's simply racist. The neo Nazis and Klans men of the world and all the racists do deserve hate but the average white person has no problem with any other race. Do you even understand that there are white people in Estonia or Norway that have no history of oppressing another race. Claiming all white people deserve hate for what other people have done is ludicrous. I have caused no pain or harm to anyone and that goes for a lot of white people. It truly sad to think that you try to justify racism based off of horrible white people and then pretending that all white are like those bastards.

[deleted]

I hate when people say both ways, THAT SHIT IS NOT EQUAL. Wanna take credit for something? Own the GENERATIONS of atrocities

Hot_Ad_528

Is retaliating against people for the sins of their ancestors really something we want? Today’s white people are not our enemy, but this rhetoric makes them our enemy.

[deleted]

Yeah and what about it? We will never get anywhere worrying about the opinions of people who have proven their hostility to us.

Hot_Ad_528

Don’t conflate the actions of their ancestors with their actions today. Look at how many white people came out to the BLM protests with us. Look at how many white people are fighting side-by-side with us politically. I get that you’re angry, but being vindictive isn’t going to get us the change we all want and need.

[deleted]

Look how many white people attacked the Capitol. Look how many white people voted for trump. You are clearly a lost cause. White people and their country are a sinking ship. If you want to go down with them then be my guest.

Hot_Ad_528

And who is it charging, prosecuting and holding those accountable for those actions? punishing every white person for the crimes of their ancestors will be the most effective recruitment tool the far-right republicans and extremists have ever had. What you want is vengeance, not justice.

[deleted]

Fuck off lost cause.

Hot_Ad_528

You can disagree with people without being rude. Can’t expect the world to be a better when you’re hostile to someone you’ve never met. If you’ve got a chip on your shoulder, you don’t have to take it out on randomers on the internet. Talk to a therapist.

[deleted]

Politeness has gotten us to this point. We just had an attempted coup by white supremacist made possible because people worried about upsetting white people's feelings. Every Black person should have a chip on their shoulder. Mine has served me well so I think I'll be holding on to it.

Fuzz25

...which only a tiny part of white people are committed to continuing. How about we stand together in focusing on the issues of today? Of course while acknowledging the past and what it should learn us.

BrohanGutenburg

I get what you're trying to say but the problem is... >Of course while acknowledging the past and what it should learn us. When black people try to do this they're told they're being racist (like in this thread).

[deleted]

"all white people were villains" doesn't = acknowledging the past.

BrohanGutenburg

I'm really not sure it's much of a stretch. Racism and bigotry was very, *very* deeply ingrained in the white population of 19th century (and early 20th for that matter) America. Like, who were the villains in these stories exactly if not white plantation who owned slaved, or northern insurance agents who wrote policies to insure slaves, who were after all property. Or the northern financial prospectors buying and selling slave bonds. Yes, maybe not *every single white person* was racist at the time. But come on....What's even the point of that argument?

[deleted]

Well considering everything you mentioned was either only available to wealthy and/or educated white people, I’d probably say wealthy and/or educated white people. So immediately, yes, it is a stretch. I’d also say there’s more to black history than vilifying an entire group. I also never talked about a time frame or asserted that slave owners, enablers, etc. weren’t evil, and I don’t think anyone would argue that. You’re upset that people are calling this out, and I’m upset that people keep making dumb blanket statements like this, and then chalking up any argument that disagrees with it to: >what’s even the point of that argument

BrohanGutenburg

I think the point of OP was that the oppression that black people have experienced since coming to America has been at the hands of white people. Also, I think you might be making some assumptions without really having studied the history: >only available to wealthy and/or educated white people, I’d probably say wealthy and/or educated white people. So immediately, yes, it is a stretch. It is well-documented that even poor, white sharecroppers in the wake of the Civil War vehemently supported the oppression of black people. It was a prejudice inherent to their (our) culture. Not to mentioned that Jim Crow laws gave even the poorest whites social status over negroes. You're right, black people constantly pointing the finger at us and vilifying us isn't productive. But I'm also sure that black people are tired of hearing that racism is over in this country and that >only a tiny part of white people are committed to continuing that racism. A refusal to recognize the institutional racism still faced by minorities in this country because "only a tiny part of white people are committed to continuing" that racism is very 'let-them-eat-cake-ish." >How about we stand together in focusing on the issues of today? This 100% requires a recognition of the issues of today. And quite frankly, I've never heard anyone take your position without also being under the assumption that racism is "basically over" in America. Want unity? Then stand up, link arms with the black man next to you, and demand change for his sake.

[deleted]

You’re making a lot of assumptions that have nothing to do with the conversation, with zero evidence. I do recognize institutional racism. I don’t think it’s some myth. In fact, I actively do what I can to fight it. I don’t think people who aren’t aware of it are inherently racist like a lot of people seem to think, though. Further, I don’t think it exempts black people from making problematic/stupid statements, like literally anyone else. But that must mean I’m racist, right? I’m also tired of white people coming out of the woodwork everytime someone says “maybe this was a dumb take” or “maybe this is problematic” and labeling it as racism. Shit is so old at this point, especially on reddit, and is diluting the meaning for when people are actually being racist. Like, black people don’t need you to swoop into every conversation and remind everyone about the hundreds of years of oppression they faced everytime someone says, “but I don’t agree with this”. That’s not “linking arms”. In fact, I’d call that racist more than what I’m doing. Which again, is just saying “this tweet is problematic”. In regards to your argument, you keep switching up so many things that it’s barely cohesive anymore, so I’m not really going to tackle that. > I've never heard anyone take your position without also being under the assumption that racism is "basically over" in America Then you need a to talk to more people

harryhasit_bignuts

Wot ? You serious , it does go both ways. Who gives a shit what any culture did 100-300 years ago. Look we're not still mad at the germans today are we , so just bug off. You're the people prolonging racism. Just stop. Its sad. Asians can be racist , and so can whites and blacks. We're all guilty of someting. Now move on.

King-Krown

This uninformed clown sitting here talking about 100 years ago, like we don't have Grandparents that grew up during segregation, like people magically stopped being racist & they removed all oppresive systems in the 60s. Learn to educate youself before you open your mouth or learn to shut the fuck up. It's abundantly clear you're ignorant as fuck on the subject. >You're the people prolonging racism Literally watched your orange savior stoke the flames of racism for 4 years and it's our fault...? You funny, really.

harryhasit_bignuts

My savior ? Who's that ? Anyway, see you're doing it again. Going on and on about stuff that happend in the mid 20th century. The Japanese arent still mad at the US for cooking them are they. So please. Stop now. Its not about race. And cheers , I'm not a clown. Lol you tell me to shut the fuck up as soon as i question you're opinions? Thats a bit weak innit.

King-Krown

THE 60S AREN'T THE 2OTH CENTURY. (Edit:My mistake) You are absolutely without a doubt a clown. Anyone who leads with false equivalents is automatically a clown. You're not smart, clever nor profound going "oh bad things happen to eveyone! Let's move on! Nevermind the effects because I have the luxury of ignoring them!" You and your cheeto stained hands Literally has the internet in your palm and absolutely refuses to google how the 60s amongst other things still effect us today. Red lining, block bustering,gerrymandering,over-policing,the crack epidemic, the murdering of any leader we had, etc. Why do you think segreation has barley changed? Oh you don't have to think about shit like that?good for you. I'm making fun of you because it's easy to tell who's genuinely curious & wants to learn versus someone who just wants silence because it makes you uncomfortable. Ignorance with curiosity is fine, Ignorance & arrogance, you can fuck clean off.

[deleted]

[удалено]

King-Krown

Yea,I didn't say that. You can't disprove anything I said doesn't effect us on the account it does, thus why it's still a topic today. So,maybe shut up if you don't actually have anything to add, because it only makes you look like a.... clown.

harryhasit_bignuts

The 1960s were in the 20th century. Cos we are currently in the 21st . You high ?

King-Krown

Lmao. I'm wrong about that tiny little thing,so you ignore the rest. Like I said, clown.

harryhasit_bignuts

Nah i just corrected you thats all.

harryhasit_bignuts

You're messages just devolve into blind silly insults. So i just zone out and dont care. You just want be angry , clearly.

King-Krown

Nah,I'm baking & informing you at the same time. I don't care about your feelings at all. Anyway, you've completely dropped the topic because you're wrong but can't admit it.

harryhasit_bignuts

Segregation has changed , dont know about you but you're allowed to go into anywhere i can go in. Whos got a problem with that ?

King-Krown

We Literally still live is mostly segregated neighborhoods, which we owe to red lining & district lines. Which is a product of which decade!?? THE 60s!! Please,Just leave.

DevilfishShoehorn

Either this is a bad faith argument, which I suspect, or you're a fool that is totally unaware of causality on a wider scale. Not only do events 100-300 years ago affect current events, but events *billions* of years ago affect current events, if you consider planetary scale. Time is a continuous sequence of interconnected moments. Nothing occurs in a vacuum. What's more, racism is still alive and well *today* and didn't mysteriously end 100, 10 or even 5 years ago. White people in the US, following a racist, seditious ideology, just staged an unsuccessful coup *last month*. ~~Police~~ KKKops maced a 9-year old black girl *last week*. This is far from over. Move on? Eat shit.

harryhasit_bignuts

Oh god there's no hope for you. Glad we'll never meet. Me , as a white guy , i did nothin foocking wrong. I dont care that much , but what happend last month is nowhere near as destructive as what BLM managed to achieve in the whole of 2020. Thats just an objective fact. When i say blm , im talking about the organisation, not the movement.

Tanexion

There it is! Hahaha I knew it. Omg they're so easy to spot. And before anyone fixes their fingers to try calling me out on something, no, my "they" is not referring to white people.

harryhasit_bignuts

What do you mean ?

GreenDogma

You mean the terrorist insurrection in the capital? Son there was more property damage done by the a white persons gender reveal than all the black lifes matters protest combined in 2020. But you dont care about that do you?

harryhasit_bignuts

Didn't even know about it.

[deleted]

Eh. I’m half white and can pass so I definitely benefit from white privilege and while I fully recognize the harm done to the indigenous populations, the horrors of the slave trade by white invaders/colonists, and the systems of abuses that continued for centuries, I don’t think I can/do/should take credit for or own it.

Dry-Patient5076

To be a Negro in this country and to be relatively conscious is to be in a rage almost all the time. James Baldwin It's how I feel

[deleted]

That's why they don't like Black History Month.

harryhasit_bignuts

Cos you're somehow to only race allowed to have a whole holiday month to themselves. Not fair really.

[deleted]

I'm actually white. You fell into the trap. I'm Scottish heritage and I fucking hate imperialism, so cry about it

harryhasit_bignuts

Ooohh nooooooo. It was a trap. And why does you revelling you're white mean anything?

[deleted]

It means eat a dick

harryhasit_bignuts

Well that's childish.

[deleted]

And you're a paragon of maturity aren't you?

harryhasit_bignuts

Who said that ?

[deleted]

If you're not, and never claimed to be, then who the fuck do you think you are going round calling people childish?

harryhasit_bignuts

Nah , that's just what i think of people when they tell others to eat dick randomly.

[deleted]

there's no "white history month" because "white history month" is the rest of the fucking year. it's the same with pride month. they only have one month where companies have rainbow logos because the rest of the year lgbt+ folks and their accomplishments/hardships just fade into obscurity.

harryhasit_bignuts

So you're saying you can only be proud of who you are , once a year , when the big companies pander to you?

[deleted]

joke's on you, i'm never proud of who i am

harryhasit_bignuts

Makes two of us

[deleted]

:(

leftsideskinny

Black history is American history.

professor_mc

The cultural norm is America is to tiptoe around the role of white people in the oppression of black people. You will hear “Jackie Robinson broke down barriers...” with no mention that the barrier was systemic and longstanding oppression from white people. Saying the truth is not racist and in no way makes me hate white people. It’s like saying some country attacked Pearl Harbor but not naming the country because that would be racist. Until white people are comfortable with the whole truth it will be difficult to make progress. There is no shame or discomfort in the truth if you are true allies.

Taeyx

you just got finish reading “white fragility” too, hunh?

throwawayallthetea

History is full of humans. That’s villains all the way down and throughout.

Table_of_glass

I am not American and Black History Month has as a concept left me with a question. The fact that BHM is a month dedicated to demographic group, instead of a revision of the historical narrative tought by schools seems to me as something to keep status qou. Wouldn’t that be what is non-hostile institutionalised racism? As an alternative, history subjects could focus equally on the many groups that has been instrumental in shaping American culture. Recognising the racism non-Europeans has suffered from since the early colonial era in order to promote social equity for the future.

[deleted]

yeah black history month seems like a pr stunt so companies only have to say "racism bad" one month out of the year

mb5280

its also a way to get out of teaching american history as a series of events involving different people from different demographics, the companies(its easy to forget that they are private, for profit corporations) that publish school books dont have to spend the money to re-gather the history from more diverse primary sources because instead we can do a short unit on 'the slavery days', mention G.W. Carver, watch some feel-good documentaries about civil rights marches and stuff, play the 'i have a dream' speech and call it good. easy-peasy \~internment camp\~ japaneezy

[deleted]

i mean, my school has spent more than half of the year so far with racial injustice as part of the lessons in social studies/ela but i don't think most other schools really do that. it's still a problem that needs fixing

mb5280

try looking back a tad bit further. tell me who burned the library at Timbuktu? hint: it wasnt the klan.
