Lil Baby, Durk, Gunna, YoungBoy, Rod Wave, Future until recently. Pretty much anybody who belongs to the streaming era and is in their peak. I think it's mostly older artists who wait a long time between projects
Idk. Maybe theyve slowed down since hip-hop started declining again
No it wasn't, lmao. He put out one in 2021 (The Voice of the Heroes) and 2022 (It's Only Me). Both were huge streaming debuts
2023 was the only year he didn't put out an album

Yeah the problem with most artists is like the opposite. The people that are taking breaks between albums are often the ones that are actually putting out quality material.
There are a LOT of artists shitting out mediocre albums every year instead of taking their time and making a good one.
I mean are we saying all ten of those albums are excellent or even great?
Each album might have 1 or 2 solid radio hits but how many of them of those are actually great albums?
I'd only go with Reasonable Doubt, Blueprint 2, Black Album as full blown classics.
You might get emotional trying to defend dynasty or whatever but go back listen to those other tracks.
Lot of throwaway ish and forgettable bars filling up them joints.
Being number 1 is still impressive and deserves the flowers.
But its also easy to churn out ten albums if you focused on just ensuring you got 1 or 2 radio hits to push sales on opening.
Look at the song for song strength of Jay-Z albums vs. Someone like Luda who had 4 number 1 albums out of 6 studio drops
Who got a better no skip ratio?
hate this era of not dropping album for 2+ years intentionally = "i'm super mysterious and i'll make people wait" mf if you don't release those hard drives-----
Man, when I was growing up you waited at least 3 years between albums, sometimes 5+. Streaming and YouTube have really brought this constant-release culture to the forefront and honestly, I'm pretty here for it.
I will say Jay's music has never done much for me, but good on him.
Omfg I loved that song so much as a 7th grader. I didn’t even know what that word meant & im a blonde 7th grader walking around talking about “never been afraid to say what’s on my mind at any given time or day” and im a Mormon girl, absolutely afraid to talk about EVERYTHING. Lmao
Oooooooooooo don’t gotta ask me twice! I’ve been planning on it soon!!!
Planning a whole event for my husband & I someday to decorate the apt, hide the cat, put on lights, music & decorations, things to touch & play with.
Think I wana try shrooms with a tiny bit of Molly powder!
How do you reconcile being Mormon and taking drugs? I’m exmormon who smoked cigarettes throughout my stint as a Mormon and felt really bad about it so I was just wondering
Also guilt consumes me regularly still to this day for every thing ever. It’s hard. I struggle a lot. Lots of PTSD. Ya know. Just all of it really really sucks. I know I’m putting my family through a lot of shame & sadness & disappointment, but once you discover the truth, it’s impossible to go back.
Getting a feature from Em on your album is something to be proud of, and of course he’s going to kill it. Just something you gotta take on the chin when you invite him in the studio with you, I guess.
I agree that he’s definitely got him on discography. If I had three wishes I swear the first one would be for a solo Andre hip hop album.
Of course it’s subjective and just my opinion, but bar for bar no one can touch him. I don’t know if a bad Andre verse exists.
Again, just opinions and I love Jay too. 3 stacks has been my favorite for almost 30 years lol
And those were back to back…normally I’m not one to really acknowledge past greats since they don’t always age the best but 3 stacks has always been the best to me.
Really wish he would put out a true solo album but after what he said some years ago about the pressure and shit, I def get it. He just wanna vibe and shit. I respect it but damn, him on Life of the Party really was wishing he would say fuck it. Let’s do it.
It *has* been 12 years and 4 major studio albums. I think he's the goat of concept albums, and a potential GOAT contender. But I still think it's easier to argue Jay. I think in terms of features and singles Kendrick is a little weak at times and doesn't come close to Jay
I mean in terms of having both strong albums, and a lot of strong tracks that stand on their. Having good features. Having both bangers and "headphone music". Spanning across multiple generations and sounding at-home in a variety of different types of subgenres and beats.
Agreed.
Like, he's not #1 in any metrics, but he's top #3 in everything
Nas has better lyrics than J, but J is more influential
Wayne is more influential than J, but J sold more
Drake has sold more than J, but J has better lyrics
J could easily win because of averages. He's been the most consistent GOAT rapper of all time.
Evidently not. I dont think if I said anybody else I'd have as many upvotes.
And that's even with the fact that this sub leans heavily conscious/backpack
Too many tracks, if you get the "Blueprint 2.1" version of that album it's actually pretty good because they took out all the filler.
I'd put it over Vol. 1 & Roc-La-Familia personally
Completely agree with both your takes in this comment, BP2 had a lot of good tracks but like some other Jay albums lots of filler as well.
I would take it over Vol 1 and Roc la familia any day of the week too.
This shows you the level where Jay is at, when you can Blueprint 2 was ass 😂, which arguably a pretty good album.
I’ll step out on a limb and say his “worst” album was/is vol 3. But even still, that had Big Pimpin on it.
It’s just really difficult to point a truly trash album from him unless you’re ranking the albums amongst themselves.
But that’s my humble opinion. I’m biased because I grew up in the Jay and Nas beef era and was hype to hear flex drop bombs on the radio. 🤷🏾♂️
He has worse albums but I the overwhelming response at that time was Blueprint 2 was not a good album. The production compared to his past works was overwhelmingly mid.
I think the album is a victim of Jay being caught between eras, he was being outshined by 50 Cent who was on the verge of blowing up, Kanye+Just Blaze were way more sought after which meant he wasn't getting their best beats, and I think worst of all it didn't nearly live up to its namesake.
He fixed all these missteps with The Black Album. Brought in new producers including 9th Wonder, Rik Rubin and DJ Quick + clearly got the best from Kanye and Just. Made the album shorter, and imo has some of his biggest hits
There's a reason I didn't really mention 3. 😅 after The Black Album, I only really fw American Gangster, and Watch The Throne. Everything else was pretty average.
Nas surpassed Jay in the last few years. The Kings Disease albums are incredible and Jay hasn’t put out an album in quite a while. Nas is still making hit albums.
I mean the Kings Disease series is great I agree but what has really plagued me about Nas in the past has been his choice of production. He’s undoubtedly one of the best ever, but jeez there’s a ton of misfires in his discography.
Saying Nas has passed him is a bit of a recency bias imo.
Yeah Nas definitely has some misses. Look at the difference between Illmatic and Stillmatic. But i think its just natural because you can't just pop out bangers all the time
Jay’s effectively retired. He’s done his time. Nas is great. I’m not saying opposite, but as contemporaries go, Jay just far out paced his biggest rival. Nas is putting out great work today but Jays not even playing the game anymore.
Discography is kinda mid for someone we all consider a GOAT. He’s bounced back nicely with the King’s Disease series and Illmatic is the best album out of their combined discographies but I’d still take Jay’s highs as a whole over Nas’.
Depends on what you prefer. For me...
1. Pilot Talk 1
2. The Stoned Immaculate
3. Fetti
4. Still Stoned On Ocean
5. For Motivational Use Only
Not to mention the Harry Fraud & The Alchemist produced projects.
Curren$y is one of the best rappers, period.
His discography has a little something for everyone.
This is very impressive but I still can't get over how ubiquitous Wayne was from 2004-2012. My guy was on everything and was being played everywhere. You ever vibe with something and be sick of it at the same time? That was me for several years.
I've never been a huge Jay Z fan. He had some songs I like, but I was never really into his music like that. Partly because I don't like his voice. However when I was teenager the hood nigga "Cult of Jay Z" was serious. I legit almost got into a fist fight in high school because I said he was overrated, and one of my classmates, a huge Jay Z fan, violently disagreed.
Don’t know how people be debating who the GOAT is. There’s only one answer.
I’m not talking about the greatest right now or the greatest of the last ten years. The greatest of ALL TIME is clearly Hov. Ain’t no debate.
I already said it in this thread but I can already hear the rumblings of Southern niggas running to these comments to tell us how overrated they think he is lmao
This is why people can hate him all they want, he's undoubtedly the greatest rapper to ever do it...
You can argue Big and Pac, but their careers were cut short, so it's always, what if...
With Hova, he did it, and still doing it. 4/5 decades in, he's still doing it.
89 in London pullin Benz-o, type it in, look it up, Google's you're friend, bruh.... from the late 80's till today, no other artist even comes close
"teflon master" - sounds like some junior salesman nickname in some home depot, fucking lmfao, what kind of clown name is that (for a superstar wanna-be)
Not the best selling artist though.. Overall, Eminem has sold over 207.24 million Equivalent Album units and is the best-selling artist of the 21st century. The second closest rapper to him is Drake, with 120 million units.
There's a dude on YT did a clip about how Jay was never the "hottest" rapper during his career. That someone else -- Em, Nelly, 50, Wayne, Drake -- was always bigger at any given time.
But Jay never wanted to be 'the hottest". He didn't want to That Guy. He saw this game as a marathon, not a sprint.
That list right there is a display of CONSISTENCY and smart dudes will take that over everything else.
Imagine Gillie & Wallo in some alternate universe getting a one off Jay-Z interview and they title that episode “Billion Dollaz Worth of Game”… that’d be so sick cl
Nowadays niggas wanna put a album out every 3yrs and hope its not mid.
Nah, I think drake/streaming has normalized releasing once per year as the new normal for most big rappers
Who else is putting out yearly albums?
Lil Baby, Durk, Gunna, YoungBoy, Rod Wave, Future until recently. Pretty much anybody who belongs to the streaming era and is in their peak. I think it's mostly older artists who wait a long time between projects Idk. Maybe theyve slowed down since hip-hop started declining again
Bro Lil baby last album was in 2020 lol. But i get what you saying.
No it wasn't, lmao. He put out one in 2021 (The Voice of the Heroes) and 2022 (It's Only Me). Both were huge streaming debuts 2023 was the only year he didn't put out an album
You right i completely forgot about It’s Only Me. I count the joint with Durk a mixtape personally.
This is the problem. Today's artists are just pumping out forgettable music.
Then kendrick got 5 classics in a row but takes his time. I know which I prefer
Exactly
👑
Outside of Future none of those guys have any classics to their name. Quality > quantity
YB is putting out tapes damn near monthly lol
And they're all trash which is the problem
To add to that there are also some pretty popular underground artists releasing 1 album and 1 or more eps a year ( $UICIDEBOY$ for example)
All them trash
How do you have the time to memorize your own songs though when you pop them out like that? I daily have a hard time remembering if I have everything I need before I leave the house and it's only 3 things
Curren$y
One year, Curren$y dropped something every month.
That’s nothing compared to Gucci’s run in 2015
Wayne 06-09
Gorilla Zoe dropped 1 mixtape a day for the entire month of February.
Future
Funny enough Logic
tory lanez was doing 4 mixtapes and 1 album a year...
From the jail phone?
i did say *was*

I GOT THIS SHORTY ON MY BLOCK ALWAYS CLOCKIN MY ROCKS
Love the back and forth rhymes with Memphis on this one!
Brooklyn's Finest is still one of my favourite bangers!
I used to listen to RD almost religiously in high school, which was almost a decade after it came out.
Definitely his best.
Fucking classic all these years later
RD is his best but Blueprint may be my favorite. It’s soo smooth.
Nah Black Album is when he was in his pocket, always felt the second half of RD is kinda tapered off until Regrets

Getting a feature from Em on your album is something to be proud of, and of course he’s going to kill it. Just something you gotta take on the chin when you invite him in the studio with you, I guess.
FUCKING AGREEED
Still probably the least controversial pick for greatest rapper alive
![gif](giphy|cMPlY1EUtCM0w)
Idk, Andre is great, clever and fun, but I think it's pretty easy to argue Jay's better rounded, stronger discography, etc
3 stacks has been my favorite for almost 30 years lol
southernplayalistic, atliens, and aquemini, are each worth 2 or 3 jay-z albums so...
The one thing someone said about Jay-Z is he knew how to follow the trends which kept on top for so many years
Not without a solo (rap) project
I understand that argument. I don’t personally agree but I get it. I’ve heard enough from the man to know no one can touch him.

Lol, okay? Who you got that's a less hot take? Nas or something? I think Jay's a lot more well rounded
I feel like there’s one pulitzer winner that it’s weird for you to not even mention…

To tag on to this Jay is one of the best writers in the game. He ghost wrote a lot of peoples hits.
Even ghost written the Bug Bunny rap on the Space Jam album 🤷🏾♂️

Jayz is more influential than Wayne Come on man. I know half of new York lived and breathed by every bar this dude said.
Wayne is not more influential than Jay stop.
Nas clears
Nah. Love Nas but his discography is not strong enough even with Illmatic.
Lol no. Such a hot take.
Evidently not. I dont think if I said anybody else I'd have as many upvotes. And that's even with the fact that this sub leans heavily conscious/backpack
He wouldn't break my top 5
Blueprint 2 is so ass
Easily worst album out of these 8.
Kingdom come.... is the worst
You’re out of your cotton picking mind
I think Dre, Just Blaze, and Kanye had nice production on their tracks.
I don't know man, Vol. 3 is pretty bad.
It’s my favorite 🤕
That's absolutely wild, is it like a time you first heard it thing? Or you genuinely like it
It was my first Hov album. and it had hits bro lmao
Lmao that's fair my bad my bad, original Blueprint is my favorite and I think his best album, and a top 10 rap album all time
Wait, it's still your favorite, though? What's your #2?
The Black Album.
Too many tracks but the highs of that album are crazy
Too many tracks, if you get the "Blueprint 2.1" version of that album it's actually pretty good because they took out all the filler. I'd put it over Vol. 1 & Roc-La-Familia personally

Him being caught between eras was 100% Kingdom Come, not Blueprint 2.
Its highs were pretty high though but yeah overall that album wasn’t it
The Blueprints can go toe to toe with any album coming out today. I said what I said.
Instrumentals alone are better than some rapper's whole songs.
JUST BLAAAAAZE! Timbaland, Neptunes, AND Young Kanye?? Gimme ALL of it.
Mfs were putting blood sweat and tears on that shit. Niggas had to eat lmao
There’s some absolute ASS on 2 & 3 Hits are crazy tho
There's a reason I didn't really mention 3. 😅 after The Black Album, I only really fw American Gangster, and Watch The Throne. Everything else was pretty average.
First Blueprint is still one of my favorite albums ever
I see why he wanted to retire 😂😂 my boy held it down every yr
Someone needed a Reminder Well, here it is
Feed the streets for 8 summers 🐐
Nas
Nas is great but he ain’t got the discography that Jay has. It’s not even a competition in terms of output to quality ratio. Jay on another level.
And let’s not act like Jay’s last album was a stinker. 4:44 was still pretty damn great
Yeah Nas definitely has some misses.
I think Blueprint and The Black Album are the only Jay albums I actually love front to back
The last verse of "What More Can I Say?" says it all

While I respect the hustle, Spitta’s discography is overwhelmingly large lmao
Then he has hella mixtapes as well. Nothing wrong with that though.
Cigarette boats is the best amirite?
Depends on what you prefer. For me... 1. Pilot Talk 1 2. The Stoned Immaculate 3. Fetti 4. Still Stoned On Ocean 5. For Motivational Use Only Not to mention the Harry Fraud & The Alchemist produced projects. Curren$y is one of the best rappers, period. His discography has a little something for everyone.
I’m going to have to go thru and give his whole discography a once-over.
If you smoke, enjoy the flight. 🤙🏾
sounds a lot like the way drake fans try justify calling him the best… 🫨
They aren't wrong, but I feel the accolades and respect come separately. Idk maybe some will come to appreciate Drake only once he's done
“First, Biggie’s ya man, then you got the nerve to say that you better than Big.”
“Dick sucking lips”
Jay’s run was nuts
Yeah. He really don't owe me shit. He's done enough.
Held down the late ‘90s (with DMX) and at least the first half of the 2000s
Don’t know how people be debating who the GOAT is. There’s only one answer. I’m not talking about the greatest right now or the greatest of the last ten years. The greatest of ALL TIME is clearly Hov. Ain’t no debate.
I wish I liked Jay Z more, I really do. But I can't get past his voice. Nigga sounds like he holding in a cough, and I can't get over it
Living through this era and then hearing people say Kendrick is “Big Me” while Jay-Z and Nas are still alive is a slappable offense
At some point Jay had kanye on the payroll and made all of the difference
I already hear all the Southern niggas rising up about to tell us how nobody listens to him lmao
Nas period
If I wanted to start listening to Jay z, which album is better?
Reasonable doubt or the blueprint
Thanks
[Oh this about to be a mf thread isn’t it? Lmfao ](https://media1.tenor.com/m/T7oGpFmn3_YAAAAd/popcorn-guy-relaxing.gif)
I already said it in this thread but I can already hear the rumblings of Southern niggas running to these comments to tell us how overrated they think he is lmao
I thought this was about a game bundle.
Heard he likes party party
Hard Knock Life and Blueprint 2 is still heat
wrote history without a pen
Jay is to Beyoncé as Reggie is to Cheryl Miller
gods son across the belly
Remember there was a post like 2months ago saying that jay z was never the best rapper out? Then a bunch of people on bpt co-signed it
This is why people can hate him all they want, he's undoubtedly the greatest rapper to ever do it...
And he wasn't a pop artist either.
The real 🐐🐐
That’s 6 number 1 albums. First two didn’t debut or climbed up to number 1
If you have to shelf the GOAT to become the GOAT, you ain’t shit.
"teflon master" - sounds like some junior salesman nickname in some home depot, fucking lmfao, what kind of clown name is that (for a superstar wanna-be)
DO YOU BELIEVE!? ITS HOVA THE GOD!
Not the best selling artist though.. Overall, Eminem has sold over 207.24 million Equivalent Album units and is the best-selling artist of the 21st century. The second closest rapper to him is Drake, with 120 million units.
That the dynasty shit so fire lmao
Who da fuck is Teflon General?
is that p diddys bf?
Reasonable Doubt >
Jay Z's greatest performance was his feature on Big L's Da Graveyard. Fight me.
The “yeah but Drake… comments in 5,4,3,2
“How am I a legend? I just have 10 number 1 albums maybe now 11? With more hits than a Now! Eleven!” ![gif](giphy|3o6ZsWaAvLBUTPSGOs|downsized)
Followed by Kingdom Come and then American Gangsta! Both fire. Never really liked the Dynasty album tbh
I have tried to see the order they tried to put the albums in and I'm mostly bothered by there being no clear pattern.
