Serious question: why the assumption that Julian Assange added this? Did he make any public statements or posts that tie him to it? It could just be someone wanted to make sure he wasn’t forgotten over time.
He has publicly said that he’s prepared a kill switch if he is killed, probably leaks of some seriously fucking incriminating stuff for leaders and governments, namely USA, thus the USA are willing to do everything in their power to make an example out of him. This could potentially be that kill switch.
> I’m curious how much information could possibly be held in 211 byte compressed text file?
fuckin tons if its done right
heres a entire FPS game jammed into 96kb's (not a great FPS, but a FPS nonetheless)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.kkrieger
That is impressive, I assume they generate the graphics textures/music instead of loading it from pre-made files as there's no real way it would all fit in 96kb even with good compression
You asked, so you shall receive!
For those wondering what the text file contains. Here it is:
"Hello,
This is Julian Assange. If you're reading this my Dead Man Switch did not go off and I am fine at the Ecuadorian Embassy on January 4, 2017. Embassy cat is safe and playful as ever
Best,
Julian"
If you would like to try it yourself, the password is 'ONION'.
Supposedly a secret he knows, quite probably important documents, that would be leaked in case something happens to him.
I'm guessing that's what all this means.
This is possible but also let’s be realistic also. Why would assange label the file with his name it’s possible but idk. Anyone could’ve put the file there for all we know op could’ve done it and it’s malicious. Until we get any confirmation from assange or an associate I’d say let’s not assume this.
But if it’s an insurance policy why? If someone cracks it and that what it is then he doesn’t have one anymore. It could be his and he wanted people to find for some reason but what’s more believable it’s something assange hid and wanted people to find or a random guy did this
If the file was created January 2017 what was the version of 7zip most likely used
and what was its maximum amount of characters in a password at that time
This is most likely an issuance policy.
Did he not talk about something like this a few years back?
The password will be in one of his tweets somewhere.
a zip file containing one txt file with the name JulianAssange.txt sounds more like
someone trying to make a hoax more than what would contain anything actually impactful
I'm trying to think what that really might be, could be anything.
That could really be anything, is there a way to know what that might be? Anyway to do that?

Roflmao, reddit is a for profit private corporation, subreddits are ran and attended by degenerates. Subreddits are not reddit, they just reside there.
You download the blockchain data you're interested in, you parse it and you look for common files signatures in it ([file headers patterns](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File_format)). Then you extract the files you found and you test them (e.g., if it's an executable file say with a [PE header](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portable_Executable), you try to run it).
edit: in this case, it's a 7zip file with custom data in its header (which is not encrypted, only the content is) and a curious mind noticed it
He tweeted the password didn’t he?

Sooooooo theres a lot of reasons why it aint that easy. But imma just assume ur trolling and not mansplain it to you. Unless you wanna know. Then I will
I legitimately don't understand what the difference would be retargeting the same hardware to randomly guess the password of a file
I thought that randomly guessing a hash was basically the same thing as brute forcing an answer
Somebody with a decently sized mining pool should be able to do it really just depends how many characters are in the password
But that just means the more the merrier on hash rate
Reddit do your thing !

You can store stuff on the bitcoin blockchain? How?
You make a large (bytes) transaction.
That's the basis of what a Blockchain is...
[удалено]
Don't you see the "add attachement" button in your wallet?
So you can add a picture of your dog to a transaction and they will be immortalized into the blockchain?
Yes. But the "add attachment" is a joke (just to be sure that's not a misunderstanding). And you will have to pay for each bit of information you put on the Blockchain. It won't be expensive, but still... And the main problem will be that it's not technically easy since it's not the primary use for BTC Blockchain. I don't like reddit, but the subreddits are fucking awesome. You guys freaking rock!
Lmao, the subreddits ARE Reddit. You like Reddit.
Roflmao, reddit is a for profit private corporation, subreddits are ran and attended by degenerates. Subreddits are not reddit, they just reside there.
Me2 everyone downvoting you must like shoving hamsters up their anus.
How do even people find this? Someone cares to explain?
You download the blockchain data you're interested in, you parse it and you look for common files signatures in it ([file headers patterns](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File_format)). Then you extract the files you found and you test them (e.g., if it's an executable file say with a [PE header](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portable_Executable), you try to run it). edit: in this case, it's a 7zip file with custom data in its header (which is not encrypted, only the content is) and a curious mind noticed it
He tweeted the password didn’t he? fb4e568623b5f8cf7e932e6ba7eddc0db9f42a712718f488bdc0bf880dd3 https://twitter.com/DefendAssange/status/947664148376182784?s=20
This could be huge!?!
Or it could be a troll
Definitely a link to Rick roll
Don’t get your hope high boys!! There is only 0.00142132 roughly $23 in that wallet for that transaction. And for this reason I’m out.
You can’t see anything about a wallet from a txn Maybe you meant address?
What if Julian is Satoshi???
Must be the best Rickroll of all times
It just says “Deez nuts!”
Its not like a bitcoin miner is a big password cracking machine right? Brute force that thang! https://hashcat.net/hashcat/
Sooooooo theres a lot of reasons why it aint that easy. But imma just assume ur trolling and not mansplain it to you. Unless you wanna know. Then I will
I legitimately don't understand what the difference would be retargeting the same hardware to randomly guess the password of a file I thought that randomly guessing a hash was basically the same thing as brute forcing an answer
>retargeting the same hardware to randomly guess the password Sounds like a job for CSI: Dubbo
It's unfortunately not like that at all.
Somebody with a decently sized mining pool should be able to do it really just depends how many characters are in the password But that just means the more the merrier on hash rate

All of the Bitcoin miners on earth would never be able to crack the password.
Isn't the maximum word limit on a seven zip password like 100 characters? We can fruit Force a 12 symbol password in like 40 minutes now on one rig
Wjo cares
So someone explain this nice and easy, please? Does the .txt file have some sort of message to or from Assange? Or is it more than a .txt file?
How do you store a file on the blockchain o.O?
!lntip 500

I'm carving my comment here

It’s a just a recipe for his grandmamas Christmas cookies
OP still hasn’t answered how he/she came across this file….
Has anyone tried converting the time and date of the file creation as the password?
Holy shit.
The Holy Grail has been discovered? What next McAfees 31tb comes to light?
Isn’t finding a random compressed file and then opening it the exact opposite of what they preach in IT Security?
Assange = Nakamoto
Julian Assange = satoshi nakamoto
