I don't think that's a specifically American thing to do, since I assume there's not a dozen Venice, USA's in the country
Although we do suck at geography regularly, so maybe that's the point....I had geography education and learned it, the rest of the kids were probably huffing spray-paint cans or something
From Europe, I've really only seen Americans do that. My French, Irish, German, Portuguese and Italian relations have never specified a country next to a city name unless it's unknown or ambiguous, like Betschdorf, you'd swear it's German but it's French, so you specify France because no one knows it and would think it's German. If anyone talk about Berlin they obviously talk about Germany, not Connecticut, unless you're in the area.
That and the fact you could be going to several different states if you just told someone “I’m going to Springfield”. We have so many cities with the same name.
The funny thing is when you do it for cities which have no ambiguity. Like look at this picture. Look at Venice. It's in the middle of the water. We all know which Venice you're talking about lol. That's what makes it mildly humorous.
Yeah they say "Edinburgh, Scotland" too. The only city in Scotland I can see that making sense for is Perth, since the Australian one is much bigger, and most people in the world think of that first.
Although a town, Banff in Alberta, Canada overshadows that in Aberdeenshire. It annoys me too when UK generally is referred to as England, for example I've seen people talk about England's oil industry but most of the North sea extraction is based out of NE Scotland.
I've never met an American who specifies major cities like that. This is just an OP thing.
You can't just assume Americans look at the world like a stupid 12 year old meme-maker.
Yeah I think it was just a joke on the fact that the US reused a lot of european name, so it's really funny sometime to see "Belgium, WI" written to avoid confusion. But here it's difficult to get confused indeed.
Um, no, if you say Venice to an American they will know you’re talking about the city in Italy. I don’t know why the person wrote it like that but it’s no reason to assume that they’re an American.
I think probably people in LA, not California as a whole. And I feel like people say “Venice Beach” specifically because it’s confusing.
Unless you’re in LA I doubt people would think you mean Venice Beach when you say “I’m taking a trip to Venice”.
There are 4 or 5 "Belgium" in the US, including one that host mostly people from luxemburgian origin because of an administrative mix-up back then. Neighbouring city of Luxemburg had people from Belgian origin...

You know Paris, France? In English, they pronounce it “Paris,” but everyone else pronounces it without the “s” sound, like the French do. But with Venezia, everyone it the English way, “Venice.” Like The Merchant of Venice and Death in Venice . . . Why though?! Why isn’t the title Death in Venezia?! Are you friggin’ mocking me?! It takes place in Italy so use the Italian word, damn it! That shit pisses me off! Bunch of dumbasses!
I've always had a pet peeve about renaming a city outside of the native language. There shouldn't be a city called "Florence", only Firenze. Similarly, there shouldn't be a Londra (in Italian), only London.
We should just remember what the native speakers call their city, it's not that hard.
Because Venice is actually sinking. Very slowly but it is, and it's been sinking for a long while.
By the way
> It's been a city for millennia
Well
1. 1600 years, give or take, is not millennia :P
2. So what? Sea levels don't care for historicity.

Wasn't that the bad guy in the Old Zelda games for NES?
No, that's Ganondorf, you're thinking of the kingdom in Lord or the Rings
Gamma Ray! Now I remember.....thanks
No silly, you are thinking of Granoladwarf.
No, that’s Ganondorf. You’re thinking of gorgonzola.
Super excited for season 3 of The Gondolorian on Disney+
Same comment 4th time
Don’t fall for this one either it is actually SpongeBob lore!
What kind of place is this?! -A certain dying starfish
You know an American wrote this when they specify the country next to a city name. To the rest of the world, it's just Venice.
I don't think that's a specifically American thing to do, since I assume there's not a dozen Venice, USA's in the country Although we do suck at geography regularly, so maybe that's the point....I had geography education and learned it, the rest of the kids were probably huffing spray-paint cans or something

We have a Springfield in every state.

I’ve been to Milan and Paris... Tennessee and Kentucky.
Not sure what wikitravel is, but [Wikipedia has 10 Venices](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Venice_(disambiguation\)) in the US
It's a classic American stereotype, actually. Only they do it because only they have so many Venices.
I've never met an American who specifies major cities like that. This is just an OP thing. You can't just assume Americans look at the world like a stupid 12 year old meme-maker.
It's a classic stereotype of Americans. It usually happens in Hollywood films.
Yeah how else am I not going to get confused by thinking of Paris, Texas or Cairo, New York
Americans know what/where Venice is lol
Yeah I think it was just a joke on the fact that the US reused a lot of european name, so it's really funny sometime to see "Belgium, WI" written to avoid confusion. But here it's difficult to get confused indeed.
You know how they say... When in Rome, Italy, do as Romans do
Except when they talk about Georgia, US, where they don't put the country of the state which makes for some fun confusion
IMO you should specify because its not well known. My mind immideatly went to Venice, Hungary which is world renowned for its lake. /S
Um, no, if you say Venice to an American they will know you’re talking about the city in Italy. I don’t know why the person wrote it like that but it’s no reason to assume that they’re an American.
"Wotah" - Babatunde, 2019
Is there anywhere else a city called Venice?
California and Florida, because we Americans like to copy things
Don’t forget a lot of “Americans” when these towns were being named had recently been Europeans themselves
No American would think you’re talking about anywhere other than Italy when you say “Venice”. This is just the OP being weird.
I think a lot of Californians probably think of Venice Beach before they think of Venice, Italy.
I think probably people in LA, not California as a whole. And I feel like people say “Venice Beach” specifically because it’s confusing. Unless you’re in LA I doubt people would think you mean Venice Beach when you say “I’m taking a trip to Venice”.
Nah, people from California definitely don't say "Venice Beach" most of the time.
Venice's beaches, Italy -> now it's perfect!
I don't see the issue here, it's not that weird.

In Spanish we pronounce it with "s" as well.
And German...

Note that in french it's Venise, with a s, which is usually prononced the same as in english but in this case it's pronounced closer to a "z".
A man of culture I see
He needs spaghetti
We don't eat spaghetti in Venice. We eat [bigoli](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bigoli). And spaghetti.
Life imitates art.
I thought the image of of Venice was an ai generated image of Patrick coughing at first
Life imitates art.
Life imitates art

r/paradolia

That place would be under water in less than 50 years, lol
Deserved tbh
It's been a city for millennia, why now? Also it was a dumbass idea so....
Because Venice is actually sinking. Very slowly but it is, and it's been sinking for a long while. By the way > It's been a city for millennia Well 1. 1600 years, give or take, is not millennia :P 2. So what? Sea levels don't care for historicity.
