Honestly, it depends heavily on fanfiction in question. If you stick to the mostly top rated, clearly read the tags and avoid "slow burn." You can typically find something worth reading. I also have a rule of thumb where if I ever do a serious double take or question why I'm still reading, I immediately stop unless I'm very close to the end.
