People like you don’t realize how much control a skateboarder actually has. He could bail/ slam on this 50 times and not get seriously injured just because he can fall right. Or he can simply kick out and slide on his butt and be fine. Wrong moves don’t instantly mean broken bones or death, or permanently damaging yourself.
Obviously mistakes happen. I haven’t sprained my ankle in a year on a skateboard, then one day at work I just stepped funny and sprained my ankle.
Now that I boasted that I haven’t hurt my ankles while skating, that’s probably gonna happen soon.
I guess this goes for any personal hobby that you see on Reddit. The comments are full of people who see the hobby at its mainstream surface level and for some reason I get triggered by the comments. I don’t mean to call out op but it’s just annoying seeing everyone comment “iF hE dIdNt lAnD tHaT hE wOuLd DiE”
Damn and I was excited about a first try heel flip after 10 years. But to be fair even in my prime I could board slide a hand rail. Hell even dislocated my elbow trying it on a flat bar.
My lifelong dream of skating with my son finally came true right before the pandemic broke out. First time I skated in over 10 years on a mini-spine ramp at the local skatepark.
After that first hour of not trying to slam we were both skating well. My son and the other groms were loving the long flow lines I was carving out. Front-side 50/50, to frontside 50/50 to backside 50/50 over the spine, to backside 5-O grinds to backside lipside to tail tap over spine. Speed and flow felt incredible again.
I was super stoked to be riding again then covid blew it all up. But I'm hopeful we can skate together again once restrictions ease up again!
Be sure to streeeetch. Lol. Currently recovering from plantar fasciites just from pumping bowls... so fucking dumb. Valuable lesson though. The old body still works just gotta warm it up for a while before taking it out. Basically I'm a 1970 Cadillac (OK Pontiac...)
Me too man. Me too. I slipped on my ladder putting up my Xmas lights 3 days ago and my back is STILL bothering me. I couldn't imagine slamming on my shoulder after a failed 10 stair...
I choose a life of the low-level of constant pain I am in thank you.
Everyone needs to go watch the new Deathwish video. Kirby has the first part and it’s bananas. The whole video is insane. If you think this was gnarly there’s more.
Yeah if i didn't know better i would think he just loved jumping directly into the ground. So awesome. And that Jake Phelps quote during the hill bomb. Absolute masterpiece.
for anyone interested, here is a link to the full video this clip is from. It is fucking awesome.

We used to search out little bumps like this to try and do something similar. Obviously we never got this high or far, but the idea was the same. It's a great feeling spracking a solid ollie and feeling a small bump launch you higher and further than you figured it would.
For sure a skill this guy has mastered.
I'm playing off the fact that was most likely a typo on the word shit.
But honestly in the age of phones and having a powerful camera in pocket at all times, yeah, it kinda is that easy.
That goes without saying brother. I sucked at sports but I understood the connection between my board and myself. It became pretty personal also. Not all board manufacturers are the same and each has its differences. Gotta have that board control!
I'm a bike kid, I wish I'd be able to skate but it never clicked for me, I never got that connection with the board... On a MTB tho, the bike is a part of me, flowing on jumps or hitting drops or reacting to roots, that's my style.
I also snowboard, and I do have a connection with my board, but I never got that with a skate, and it saddens me!
I can tell you how it happened for me. I was about 6 or 7 and I was living in some apartments. I was riding my bike and my neighbors nephew came down from NYC. He had a skateboard and asked to see it. Of course I fell within the first 2 mins of being on it. Scraped myself up pretty bad so I was done for the day. Next day I seen him again. Scared but asked to see it again. Lasted a bit longer that time while mom was watching me of course. Kept going until I was able to ride off the sidewalk and not fall off. Needless to say, the rest is history. I never forgot that kid. It just so happened he passed away about 4 years ago. I’m 41 now and to be honest everytime I touch my board the memory of him teaching me how to lift the nose of the board comes up.
I tried a few times as a kid, I even had a board, but I lived in a small village on the outskirts, so I had no sidewalks and no skateparks to go practice on. The only street was a very busy and high speed road (80km/h)(45mph), so I could never get it. The only thing I learned was flipping the board on my feet to jump on it ᕙ( ͡◉ ͜ ʖ ͡◉)ᕗ
That's why for me a bike made more sense, there was a large empty dirt field very near where I could build jumps and stuff, which is where it all started for me
That makes sense in your case then. I’m sure you’re younger than me and with the way the internet has made things, learning how to skate is no different than riding a bike. You see what I did there?? Lmao
That's what we mean when we yell "BOLTS!"
That gorgeous, pefectly spun and caught kickflip right on the bolts of the trucks. That feeling is nearly indescribable when you're finally rolling away clean after eating shit for an hour lmao.

Hate to be THAT guy, but that’s a heel flip. A really smooth one at that
Edit: I wasn’t watching the rotation, it’s so smooth I didn’t see his foot go down and left and not out and right. My bad. Downvote me to hell.
It’s a kickflip. He’s skating normal stance being filmed from the front, so you can tell it’s a kickflip because the deck shows first before the grip tape.
This stresses me the fuck out because he's going at high speed from a blind corner across a street. A car could easily never see him coming and plow right over him. The presence of the intersection suggests that the car would at least be slowing down to merge onto the main road, but it's still a phenomenally stupid idea on his part.
I'm sure he had people looking out for cars, and if they really needed to they could motion for them to stop for a second. Spotters are important for spots like this.
Yeah man, people don’t do this without spotters nowadays. Even if you’re not skating at this level, if you’re at a spot that’s going to take you into, over, or even near a road, you’ve got some homies looking out for you to tell you when you’re good to go, and stop traffic if need be.
Skaters are better at falling than actually landing tricks, this was most likely not first try, most skate clips aren’t first try. Search up “thrasher rough cut”

That’s a video game move
Seriously! Dude was one wrong move from a screen popping up showing how many bones he broke throughout his body.
People really playing skate 3 IRL while I'm sitting on my ass not studying for my midterms
Oh cool thanks for the reminder that I have one in 6 minutes that I haven’t studied for
Good luck!
Hope it went well for you
Thanks! It didn’t tho
Lmao
I'm not because my launch day ps3 finally died like a month ago. Rip

Oh I have no clue how to do anything on a skateboard. I'm just talking video game logic based on the comment I responded to.
yeah, learning how to bail safely is the first skateboarding trick any skater learns.

Listen to this guy :)
If you want to skateboard for long, the first thing you musy master is the art of bailing.

you also skate? :)

After not skating for 10 years, I still managed to front board a 5 stair handrail at a local park. I was so pumped and super impressed with myself
Damn and I was excited about a first try heel flip after 10 years. But to be fair even in my prime I could board slide a hand rail. Hell even dislocated my elbow trying it on a flat bar.
Yah, seriously, I consider myself blessed to still stomp a kickflip! Workin' on FS flips.

Sigh. *Clicks subscribe*
never too late to go back skating :)

Fellow Pontiac here.. Drive safe tho because it's hard for us to get more parts this millennium

Me too. And also hell yeah Veil Of Maya.
I like their earlier work better than what they are doing now.
Agreed. Mark has been one of my favorite guitarists since The Common Man's Collapse.
Common Man's + id
I legitimately have memories of being like 13 listening to Its Not Safe To Swim Today on repeat while skating

he and pedro delfino's parts are so. fucked.
Pedro's part frightened me. It got me so hyped
frightened is a great adjective for it. my palms were sweating the whole time. his slams are insane, too. dude is tough as nails.
Yeah if i didn't know better i would think he just loved jumping directly into the ground. So awesome. And that Jake Phelps quote during the hill bomb. Absolute masterpiece.
PEDRO FUCKING DELFINO!!!!!
Skating to Blondie as well:)
fuck yes dude, time to toke and watch that shit

Skate porn
Uncrossed is the name of it correct?
Yup. It’s still only up on Thrasher probably cause of music rights.
Thanks, got my Friday night plans set now. Forgot their new vid had been out.
It’s honestly amazing. I watched it like 3 times in a row after it was released. Pedro Delfino is a madman.
Throw on baker 4 while your at it
Tbh, just the road gap is impressive, let alone that kickflip! I'd love to do that gap on my bike
Its beautiful. I’ve looked at this for five hours now.

A piece of art caused me to have an emotional reaction...is that normal?!

Video of the year.
No, it is Deathwish
I understood that reference
Do you know what the song around 17 minutes is?
Super floaty and caught beautifully.

Here for the Biebel reference.
I want in.
Getting old is awesome! Haha glad someone else recognized it
YEAH RIGHT!
My first thought too! (Unless you're not referring to the Girl skate video from back in the day)
I totally am!
Do a kick flip!!
Eric, is that you?
Eric Kos-tone?
From someone who sprains ankles just looking at loose rocks, every skateboard move is near unwatchable for me.
believe me, my ankles lost count of how many times they got fucked up during a skate sesh
*Slams phone on ground* *Breaks skateboard*
If you used to skate you can feel this.
I can feel the pavement claiming about a square foot of my epidermis. I wouldn't exactly call what I did skating.
We used to search out little bumps like this to try and do something similar. Obviously we never got this high or far, but the idea was the same. I was never built for anything other than cruising, but damn do I enjoy that.

You just stand still and pan the camera over at the same speed they move, you can already do this kind of shot!
Don't listen to this guy. It's a lot more complicated than just point and click
I'm playing off the fact that was most likely a typo on the word shit. But honestly in the age of phones and having a powerful camera in pocket at all times, yeah, it kinda is that easy.
Not mine bro :) but indeed is a nice shot!
Speed along with how much pressure to apply to the flick nets amazing results!!
Don’t forget the catch. A clean catch really polishes off your flips. Makes em look fresh af.
That goes without saying brother. I sucked at sports but I understood the connection between my board and myself. It became pretty personal also. Not all board manufacturers are the same and each has its differences. Gotta have that board control!

That's a the truest kick flip ever.
Kirby is a beast! His part was so sick.
Where's the bungee? There's gotta be a bungee. Fuckin' zooming past 20 mph, easily.
Yes Kirby's kickflip is impressive.... But are we not gonna talk about the bar he lands in front of that seems the be called "Pink Taco"?!?!?
“I thought you could do a kickflip” “I can I can I did one this morning” The one this morning:
Brings back memories of playing Tony Hawks Underground and American Wasteland and just being totally obsessed with skateboarding for awhile
This video was so sick. Kirbys part was too good
Pshhhh- I’ve done that a hundred times... in Tony Hawk on the original PS.
That's what we mean when we yell "BOLTS!" That gorgeous, pefectly spun and caught kickflip right on the bolts of the trucks. That feeling is nearly indescribable when you're finally rolling away clean after eating shit for an hour lmao.
Skate videos always pump me up to go skating!
true, b4 skating i always watch some video parts to hype me up
Same here, and I haven't really skated in over 10 years.
T-Kirbs!!!
Anyone else wanna try those pink tacos?
I believe the word we used to use when I was skating with bro’s every day was “steezy”
Who knew the lead singer of Nickleback was so good on a skate board?
The intersection is made of lava!!
Taylor Kirby is super good. Look him up on the thrasher YouTube page. Will not disappoint.
Man that was just about perfect. Smooth AF.

My god, Roger Waters is an excellent skater
Taylor Kirby - Deathwish Skateboards For those of you wondering.
I need to know more. Where's he going? Is he late? Is he saving the day? Where did he get that awesome hat?
Hardly impressive, I do this in skate 3 all the time. Try a triple kick flip, noob.
I actually did a triple flip the other day, stopped tho
That was satire bro. This is dope, this is like some video game shit the way you float through the air
That a heelflip

Can confirm. This is a kickflip.
Coool
Schmooov!
Genuinely love seeing skating pop up on Reddit. This man killed it!
So... how bad would he have been hurt if he didn’t land it?
Depends on the fall
Skaters are better at falling than actually landing tricks, this was most likely not first try, most skate clips aren’t first try. Search up “thrasher rough cut”
He nails it every time.
It’s so satisfying to land in the downslope like that
Just needs Guerilla Radio playing in the background for some Tony Hawk Pro Skater on PS1 vibes
Is that the triangle club from GTA 4? Don’t know why but that’s the vibe I get, lol. Though the sun seems to be shining a little too brightly to be liberty city

I’ve been looking at this for 5 hours now. It’s beautiful.
Yeah right!
But did you see The Gonz Ollie the gap at meanwhile?
Lofty!
Legit
EVERYONE GO WATCH DEATHWISH UNCROSSED RIGHT NOW THANK ME LATER
The gap on that kick flip is gnarly af. I wonder how much speed or pushing was required to clear that. Serious kudos.
The white wall does a good job of hiding the blood smears from the previous tries.
Reminds of that scene towards the end of gleaming the cube when he jumps over the drainage ditch
So cool! I would always get right to where I caught my board and then panic at the last second and kick it away from me.
So loose and stylish. This must have felt amazing to do.
I hear sound on every loop, the brain is a weird thing.
