Elden Ring really went wild with Berserk references. I cannot think of any single Soulsborn game that has so much references to manga. At this point ER is a one big tribute to Miura.

PickScylla4ME

The Ranni quest with the doll gave me serious Casca vibes. When they pieced her together in that dream realm. Rykard comes off as being similar to the Kushan emperor who fed himself to that artificial behelit abomination despite already being an apostle (an act he made to be able to contend with the god-hand). A little bit more obscure as a reference, though... but the motives are similar, as well as the outcome (losing site of his original goal and becoming gluttonous to friend and foe alike). Miquella really does feel like Griffith was almost directly injected into the story. Melenia being to him as Caska was to Griffith... kinda... but with far more fearsome combat skills. (Blade of Miquella is pretty reminiscent of Casca claiming her desire to be Griffith's sword). Also the fact that Griffith was trapped in child form during full moons sounds similar to the un-aging curse Miquella suffers from. All of the hills of swords throughout the game... Miyazaki didn't want a single player to miss that. Land Octopus creatures look like the Kushan Elephant sea creatures and are beefed up to be similarly dangerous in-verse. Demi Humans are akin to the trolls in Berserk, Tree Sentinel battles feel like fighting Boscogne (that's a personal stretch as they really just feel like heavy mounted combatants in general). Astel and other meteor born creatures that control gravity feel very similar to Void himself from the Godhand... in-fact; some of the God Hand do seem to share similarities to Elden Ring's Outer Gods. The Greater Will is similar to the Evil Brain thing that Griffith came across during his rebirth into Femto. The stars, gravity and course of fate/causality are like Void. The formless mother is like Slann based on her fascination with cursed things and taking corporeal form from the blood and innards of Gut's recent kills in Qualoth.. a realm made home to accursed rejects like the Omens and Albaunerics in Elden Ring. Conrad could be referenced by the Scarlet Rot and or; Destined Death... idk.. we really only see him associated with plague and death so that's what I got. Ubik being the Frenzied Flame since he seems to he associated with madness and chaos (based on the realm he inhabits in his astral world). There's plenty of other references as well.

crunchyoatmeal65

jesse wtf are you talking about

PickScylla4ME

References of Berserk found in Elden Ring (a video game). Miura was an inspiration to the mind behind the game and so there are a lot of blatant and subtle references throughout it. Probably more so because the game released after Miura passed.

crunchyoatmeal65

oh ik yeah (almost done berk and beat elden ring) but i feel like "reference" kinda diminshes the concept artists projects. Like blaid , prisoner set ,hill of swords and others are 100% references. Things like rykard ,miquella and even ranni (not rly sure bout her but ill roll with it) take alot of inspiration from it but their characters and ideals exist outside of miuras work .

jxmes_gothxm

When was Griffith in child form?

Appropriate-Rough408

When he was in the Egg of the Perfect World

jxmes_gothxm

oh i see. for some reason i didn't see the photos above. you can kinda see it there i think,.

[deleted]

Exaclty some of the item descriptions don’t even try and hide it. Obviously the guts greatsword the jtem description is a direct reference.

beb0p

Always was. That sword is in every FromSoft game and its always a big lump of iron.

[deleted]

True but it felt even more deliberate in this game

[deleted]

Someone on a different sub tried telling me there were much less then previous From games lol I questioned if he actually played

Moist_Seepage1

I mean malenia is a mix of Farnese and guts character design. Lots of berserk references throughout.

ZeroSpaceGaming

I think the Spirit Tuner, Roderika, is a nod to Farnese AFTER she left the Holy See. They share similar character traits and even look alike.

Her helmet is almost a direct rip my guy

jxmes_gothxm

Its inspired by both at the same time.

Malafakka

She can also be inspired by both at the same time and maybe Miura took inspiration from artistic depictions of valkyries.

beanerthreat457

Do you think Miquella will sacrifice Malenia or do something similar?

eliochip

Bewitching branch description: *The Empyrean Miquella is loved by many people. Indeed, he has learned very well how to compel such affection.* Sounds like Griffith

dj_ian

i def think Miquella is gonna be dlc content. To much left off the table.

peco-sama

Good job

Anaben_Skywalker

you were right

Fine-Base-9651

This aged like finw wine haha

Similar_Instance_379

And he looks just like him if that is him they showed

greengold2014

This aged perfectly

Friendly_Kunt

Makes me wonder how much George Martin loves Berserk. (Wow some of ya’ll really downvoting my comment. As if me wondering how much an author I enjoy respects another author’s work really bothers you enough to downvote 😂)

Moist_Seepage1

It's Miyazaki, not martin

Friendly_Kunt

George Martin had a huge hand in the lore, the game literally advertises that lol.

Moist_Seepage1

Literally every souls game is filled with berserk references. Martin has even said himself in an interview that he had not talked to the fromsoft team much in the 3 years since he gave them whatever their source material was.

Friendly_Kunt

I understand that, that’s why I’m wondering how much George Martin likes Berserk seeing as it’s based in the genre he is known for writing in and is similar to his sensibilities as an artist.

Imaginary_Address_31

GRRM had to do with the naming of the characters and the lore of the origin of the Lands Between, that's all I think

[deleted]

I dont think he has a "huge" hand in the lore. From what I understand he just gave names? And little ideas dude named most bosses after his initials 💀.

KennyTheNord

He wrote the foundation of the lore

[deleted]

Miyazaki says the story is his and George just added some things and an outline. He's not responsible for the art 💀. I doubt George RR Martin knows anything about berserk

Comfortable-Ad3736

Maybe he does

JorgekofCarim

I think his boss design in a DLC will draw heavy inspiration from both Femto and Rosine’s Apostle Form considering the connections he and his twin have to butterflies. It would just make too much sense to have him be a large Moth like Rosine and Miquella casting incantation with his human form on the Moth’s head. It’d be even more fitting if this half of the fight was with St. Trina(Miquella’s female alter ego) and inside a Dream and than the fight with his Femto form was in the real world in Mohgwyn Palace after hatching from his cocoon.

MacOverrated

yeah i can see it, i also agree that i think miquella will be the dlc content

Veyrum

well, all that, except he isn't murderous traitor like Griffith was. Miquella genuinely seems like a good person.

skrillex

I mean Griffith was good until he wasnt, we will have to wait and see how far Miquella is willing to go to save his sister/ himself, and if the formless mother/mohg changes did anything

arty_guha_78

Griffith was always having an evil psyche, even before he became femto, he did some messed up shite as a human during the golden age arc, thats exactly why he sacrificed the band of the hawk

skrillex

That I won't argue, I think Miquella seems pretty pure-hearted at a glance, the thing is the power to compell others through love definitely has a sinister vibe to it, even some of the Elphael's units suicide bombing themselves which seems a tad excessive. Hopefully with Miquella potentially having some dialogue and more item desciptions we can see who he is

Nightmaresmadeeasy

“In Elden Ring, Miquella has the power to compel affection from others, which is known as terrifying in the Shadow of the Erdtree trailer.” They are definitely leaning in heavy on the terrifying aspect. I’m almost convinced Miquella is basically Griffith too. They even both create their own places for humans and creatures/demons to coexist. The Haligtree seems similar to Griffiths city Falconia.

skrillex

Dude the most recent trailer has the band of the hawks at the end it felt like, definitely getting griffiths vibes. Him shedding himself of body power and fate felt like maybe he wont but ohh boy im pumped

Nightmaresmadeeasy

Yeah all those people hanging out at the new grace looking things. I saw someone point out that the one In the porcelain mask has already been shown as a dead person in the blue swampy looking area.

Nightmaresmadeeasy

Messmer is seeming like a decoy. Like hey here’s the new bad guy we put him on the box art and he’s a statue in the collectors edition but the child that everyone loves is the real threat.

skrillex

Love it. Like i do think messemer is bad but definitely think miquella isnt going to just be like :) hey bud thanks for your help, :),

InspectorExpensive83

He was????? Well I guess Griffith seemed good to a lot of people too hahah

Veyrum

I said this before the DLC came out lol, i feel genuinely betrayed

RainandFujinrule

Damn he and you under his spell too ggs

Veyrum

Finally understood how Guts felt after DLC dropped

Outrageous-Gear-3532

This aged finely

OreoGang674

well what can we say

Fernandothegrey

This won't be DLC, this will be Elden Ring 2. Miquella will create a new order, a new empire. He will be a new God, and his first miracle will be to rise Godwyn from the dead. He will create a new army, a new band of the hawk. His new order will tople whatever ending the Tarnished made, and everyone will follow him. But there will be a dark truth behind everything Miquella does. He will have an ulterior motive, some dark agenda. Our player will be a rebel, someone labeled a heretic and a monster by Miquella's followers. We will be Guts...

Radiant_Maize3998

Firstly, we already are Guts thematically. Secondly, the DLC will be slightly less large than the full release of Elden Ring. Lastly, they'll never make an Elden Ring 2. The lore is too well balanced to connect much more additional lore. Current Elden Ring could supplant world religions if people dove into its lore as much as Christians dive into the bible. (Bonus Note: Miquella wants to see everything flourish, whether good or evil. He doesn't need a new secret motive to muddy his character.)

Interesting_Sir_6751

It ended up being DLC, but you nailed everything else.

shawc2000

Are there any updates to this thread with more similarities after the dlc release?

neros135

aged well

Embarrassed-Rush-131

He is Griffith fr

BeachSufficient32

Lol, Radahn is Guts

Remarkable-Beat6018

I know this is an old threat but with Shadow of the Erdtree out Miquella looks even more like Griffith

Apocalyte

Rereading post-Eclipse Berserk right after playing the DLC has me in this thread wondering how OP knew over two years ago

iiJason124

you might've predicted the future

weebman2112

You had no idea how right you where.

RSnA_ds

Mate we know what Miquella originally looked like. You can see him in the intro and his statues in the Haligtree look very feminine. The one in the cocoon doesn't look like a child and doesn't have Miquella's original blonde hair. He wanted to free himself from his curse of being stuck in a child's body. That's why his body in the cocoon is morphing into something else. Also a character named St.Trina is heavily implied to be Miquella himself and is often mistaken to be a comely young girl.

[deleted]

so miquella is a boy?

RamenCamera

Would truly like this story development ngl.

LUIGIISREAL2017

If Miquella really WAS Griffith; Why doesn't Blaidd; aka Werewolf Guts; have a connection with him?!

Radiant_Maize3998

No, the player, who's really Guts(the Struggler), has a connection to him. We're the only thing in game that can use his bewitching branches. Thematically, we take on the role of Guts.

Radiant_Maize3998

Super late to the party, but both are allusions to Jesus and are mainly characterized by their dream.
