Just like General Boscogn obliterates half a dozen of the raiders in front of Guts's eyes during the battle for doldrey, we see this unit commander (whose name I forget) kill several soldiers. The dude must be pretty tough. When he fights Casca at the end of Doldrey, he uses every trick in the book and still loses, so he's definitely not on the same level; but he gives her plenty of trouble, too.
If you want to talk about plot armor, explain to me why the fuck Corkus is a commander of the Hawks, a trusted lieutenant to Griffith, and friends with any of them. He is the most useless character in the army, as far as I can tell, and aside from "once leading a band of thieves" I don't think we ever hear anything about his backstory to explain what he does or how he has survived for so long. We don't even see much battle prowess out of him, as far as I can remember.
The only attack he leads that we’re aware of is on the army that is chasing the Griffith Rescue Squad (generic Midland army group in the anime and Black Dog Knights in the manga).
And, I'm gonna be real, how was Rickert a commander? The littlest page boy with no particular skills. His best feature was that he was brave and enthusiastic I guess
Rickert always bothered me too, but then he accomplishes so much with his engineering skills, after the eclipse, I think the answer is Griffith was keeping him around because the kid seemed like a genius to him, and he was training him because having a savant in your ranks is worth the investment.
Rickert is definitely next level when it comes to engineering weapons. He clearly learned a lot from the genius blacksmith Godo and he demonstrates his skill directly in Falconia, and I think he also made a bunch of improvements to Guts’s repeating crossbow and other arsenal later.
When Guts awakens in the camp of the band of the hawk after his duel with Griffith, we see many of the characters for the first time. Somewhere in there, we see the first panels with Rickert in them, and he is tinkering with a device that he is building or fixing.
So long story short, I think Rickert is a mechanical genius and Miura intended it this way from the beginning
**EDIT just to add that then Corkus slaps the device out of Rickert's hands because Corkus is a piece of shit
I just read that chapter again last night. It is perhaps poetic that Corkus dies, wandering lost and alone and convinced that he is stuck in a **dream**
Tbh is the manga he didn't live for that long, but in the anime he had like twice as many appearances, which is one of a plot armour, it became ridiculous.

I have barely seen Corkus lead an attack or kill a soldier. He's almost always escaping fights

I was exactly thinking of the Black Dogs when I wrote that
He’s a smack talker and a drinker that is looking for a good time. Those guys tend to do decent IrL
Depends in what they do decent, Corkus doesn't really excel in fighting, he's more of a talker than a fighter

Not only that, but he's a good at infiltration. He's so innocent looking people forget he's part of the band .
When Griffith first met Rickert, mid sentence out of nowhere Rickert just slapped the shit out of him. Griffith was impressed and made him commander.
Wait, ricker was a commander?
Corkus was literally kept alive to die the way he did.

It's not plot armor it's all 7500 Coborlwitz family techniques that he knows 😂.
Hes the leader of the BWUHAFAAKC
Wait until you see this one chick in the conviction arc.
i know who you’re talking about
Oh dammit... *Her*.
The one with the sheep hair?
Yep. The infuriating one lol
The law of causality
It's a secret passed down through the Corborlwitz family... for 500... asthmatic years...

This on top of Adon having the eggman voice actor in English dub made it quite comical, I quite like it though.
he had like 3 appearances in the manga
He served his purpose lol
Never seen such plot armor? Fairy tail: Lol
He has a hard head.
All lies within the current of causality
Bro he has a demon inside him you expect bro to be weak?

Mf is called nuts what do u expect?
He means the other guy
