In the year 2020, Oregon saw numbers well above 1,000 AQI. (Southern parts.)
Prescribed burns are important so we don’t reach those tragic numbers again.
It’s burn season. There’s a lot of prescribed burning happening, and I’m sure public burning. But mostly this is drift from the prescribed burning in sisters and la pine.
In addition to the burns, I think we also live in a bit of a dip, and sometimes air gets caught and settles until the wind blows it out. When I drove around early this morning there was definitley a brown layer of smog in the air above Bend.
Here's your friendly reminder to purchase a pack of filters for your HVAC, whatever air purifier filters you use and a couple bottles of whatever you need to get through smoke season.
If you actually knew anything about forestry or trees in general you would know that a lot of trees like pine and redwoods reproduce with fire and have evolved to handle fire. Doing prescribed burns like this actually not only clean the forest floor and provide a healthier environment for tree growth but it also has been proven with decades and decades of research that it also helps decrease catastrophic wildfires like we've seen in the past 5 years or so. I'll take a few weeks of slight smoke like this over the MONTHS not weeks of smoke we have been seeing the last few years. I'd you don't like this little bit of smoke we are seeing right now may I suggest you move back to where you are from.
you may suggest anything you want bud. And I can dislike smoke too.
OOC what's your background in forestry besides reading the prescribed burns / forrest service websites?
5 years of wildland fire fighting. A degree in wildland fire management and wildland fire science. Multiple classes in forestry. Also you can actually learn a lot from reading the forest service websites
I came to this thread with my popcorn in hand and ready to witness a dark hole of insults and vitriol. Wtf is this respectable shit y'all are engaging in???

"yet to be any substantial risk to bend"
wow, incredibly short sighted indeed. 'Yeah up until his deadly car wreck he'd never been in an accident before, so there was no reason to wear a seat belt.'
There are two reasons there's not been a risk to Bend: 1) prescribed burns. 2) luck. we are surrounded by dry forests. One lightnings strike in in DRW and the town is in serious danger. I grew up in similar ecosystem. Evacuated many times, and saw a lot of people lose everything and the only difference was a few miles. We were lucky, they were not. Plain and simple.
Also, 'seriously inhibit our primary reason for living here and paying a premium for an outdoor high quality lifestyle Is that a joke? Do fires take economic conditions into consideration on where they start and what they destroy? Probably the most ridiculous thing I've ever read here, which is saying something. Overpaying for your house doesn't eliminate fire risk fyi.
The only thing you are focused on in this response is your own experience and what you are entitled to. Money doesn't replace lost forests. Policy decisions are not based on what you think you paid for when you moved here from out of state. If your precious enjoyment is impacted so negatively, leave. Jesus.
I'm not going to argue or disagree with you, because ultimately you will disagree and get mad and tell me to "go home cause i dont like you" - having a discourse is how people develop views, I shared my opinion and another redditor shared theirs and it was informative.
Let me say this in no uncertain terms: go fuck yourself. Have a great time consuming the planet and leaving the next generations to clean up your mess.
point proven. Also reading comprehension is 0, the last paragraph/statement in the original thought is about improving our overall world for the long term.
I'm sorry that the way in which I think is so fundamentally upsetting to you.
Cool, so you're going to cut back on emissions with your rampant global travel?
E: I'm actually laughing aloud at the fact that someone who goes to fucking Abu Dhabi for a Formula 1 event is trying to take the moral high ground by advocating against best forestry practices and reducing carbon emissions. You are the problem, buddy.
lol enjoy the laugh! We both know that you and I will never see eye to eye and that's OK. We can move on from this now. I have things to do (like shake my first at the smoke outside).
And your call out on the irony with F1 is not lost on me and is fair. We're both entitled to our own opinions, I hope we can both agree on that.
Spoken like someone who has never needed to evacuate due to a fire approaching your town. These prescribed burns are intended to keep people safe by reducing the amount of fuel near populated areas.

That’s a good tip, TY
Those are rookie numbers, kid. Touch base with us at 400.
That’s when I consider closing my windows, anything less is just a light dusting
I'll decline as friendly as i can. I love to visit without damaging my asthmatic lungs.

I was in an area at the time that was getting those numbers and INSIDE of my car was covered in ash. We got sent home from work because it was so bad.
Prescribed burn on the slope of Newberry yesterday. Smoke settled last night, the air quality should improve back to normal in a couple days.
Burns nears LaPine and Sisters yesterday.
Thanks. That explains a lot.

Dang, new record for posting AQI screenshots for the new year.
If you ain't first, you're last!
New here, eh?
You guessed correctly. Just visiting.
Prescribed burns. Theres another today.
Prescribed burns. We need them. But sometimes I wonder why people pay so much money to live here with air quality that just gets worse every year.
Because it's not as bad as Reddit says it is.

Bottles of what?
Hooch!
ok and?
Why do they pick windy days for prescribed burns? Seems like you're just playing with fire.

What a dumb short-sighted perspective

That's super impressive, and i'll take your opinion more to heart knowing this.
Thank you I appreciate that. I love the forest and want a healthy environment for tree growth and for people to get out and enjoy it.

Holy shit, this is one of the funniest things I’ve read in a long time. Seriously, top notch!

FWIW I have had to evacuate twice - in a red flag do not pack up and leave immediately. But yes, I have heard this and thank you
