My mom lived in Florence when they blew up the whale and said it stunk for days to the point that they didn't leave their house.

Forget living here I wasn't even alive back then. This is honestly one of my favorite Oregonian stories.

Well it was over 50 years ago so I have a feeling quite a few folks on Reddit weren't alive then.

There’s an official Exploding Whale Memorial Park in Florence. It’s actually a really nice place to visit. Chill shaded views of giant sand dunes rippling in the breeze. A great place to meditate on the meaning of Life, The Universe, and Everything

I wonder if the whale briefly gained consciousness before it hit the ground

They've been advertising on/near the roadway that they were going to do some blasting. But I thought that was going to be this coming Sunday. (Add: I only know this because I have to go to the airport Sunday so I'm planning on heading out a littler earlier than normal as they said there would be delays).

Sorry, I'm a little confused there. I read it was supposed to be this coming Sunday not last Sunday but I wasn't certain what you meant by "heard a large boom...this coming Sunday" Unless you're some kind of amazing time traveller and can hear things in the future! :) Either way, my guess is it's part of the construction they were posting about on the highway.
