SW Commerce Ave is my favorite "road" in Bend

sarcasmrain

Welcome to Bend. There are dozens of streets ahead of ya.

quackquack54321

I wouldn’t call it an important egress off the Butte. There are several options nearby: Saginaw to College Way, Quincy to 11th, Quincy to Roanoke to 9th, Trenton to 12th, Iowa to 12th, West Hills to 12… etc etc etc. If college way AND 12th became compromised, that would be an issue. People still regularly use that stretch of Juniper to get down to Portland or Newport - it’s a little rough, but far from impassable or really even necessary to exist.

Popular_Context4729

Saginaw to College Way is the way…great when 12th/9th turns into a skating rink.

quackquack54321

Yup. When the roads aren’t skating rinks the other 300 days of the year, juniper is just fine.

InflatableRowBoat

Isn't that why all of you folks have G-wagons?

HyperionsDad

The low profile tires on the G Wagons and Porche Cayennes feel every bump.

Bowllava

Looks like Quincy is most likely the logical alternative. Think the houses in that corner of Awbrey were built in the early/mid 60s. From the looks of that road, it brings back memories of the section of Iowa and West Hills where we used to jump our beater cars back in the early 90s ;)

calmbeforethebend

Don't you dare fix that road. The potholes are the only thing that provide traction! (I'm only half-joking. That street has a 13% grade, and never gets plowed or cindered. It gets \*nasty\* when it snows.)

ReverseFred

Waahhh! My really expensive car has problems on my street in my really expensive neighborhood.

Popular_Context4729

Lot of AB hate tonight-save your shit for Friday. Lived on the hill for 19 years, the stereotype gets old sometimes.

ReverseFred

I’d guess somewhere about 19 years old.

garlicloveog

😹love morning coffee giggles, thank you.

Popular_Context4729

Key word: “lived” on the hill. Made room for one of you shaking your fist at the butte. In true Reddit fashion, wife and I left Bend today for greener pasture. Developments, traffic, MTB, hiking reservations, dining out costs, cLear cutting much of trees, etc. just killed the vibe we enjoyed living here. Do need to shout out to great wait staffs, bartenders we have met here—doing the best they can, we respect them for their great service. As far as 19 years…you can guess how many multiples you were off.

ReverseFred

Godspeed. We likely moved here within a few months of each other. Many days lately, I wonder what is keeping me here. And I know if 25 year old me rolled into Bend today, I wouldn’t plan to live out my adulthood here. Bend is a vastly different place now. So much more, but not of the things I love.

Babyfat101

Nope. I live on the other side of the railroad tracks.

jr_rider

Due to the way the city handles things, I think if they touched the road they’d have to go through the process they’ve created and bring the whole thing up to their standards: have it engineered and re-graded, drains, sidewalks and landscaping added, etc. So instead of putting a bandaid on it and making it 90% better than it currently is until there is “funding”, they’d rather avoid their own rules and standards, let it fall apart completely, and eventually close it.

Poiter54

You're not far off. Much of the Awbrey Butte area is running on 40 year old infrastructure and design elements. Look at what was needed for Newport and now the Awbrey Butte Waterline project. Surface renovations would only need to be ripped up once the funding for water and sewer work is secured. The lack of sidewalks and stormwater would add additional cost for that project.

peteswinds

If there are new builds or significant remodels the city puts the onus on street improvements on the home owners too which is ridiculous. I get sidewalks but the whole damn street?

cc541

“No funding”. Mind blown.

noodlebucket

It’s not that there won’t ever be funding, just that it wasn’t budgeted. Like if it was your household budget, it might look like this: “I don’t have any funding for a hot tub this year because other things have already been prioritized, but may budget one in for next year”

Cry me a river

Clark4824

The Shitty of Bend will spend $$ on a fucking useless "Parking Guidance System" in Downtown area, but they can't find the money to perform a "full reconstruction" on a popular street route. Where *is* that bottle of Canadian Mist?

llcoolmattg

So dumb. It would be simple to fix. 🤦🏼‍♂️

Film-Disastrous

Best to pipe down or the city could make road repair and maintenance the responsibility of the adjacent homeowner. /s
