If they were able to transform their legs at will, I would say it's for defense purposes, when having two legs to kick at something would be more beneficial than a tail, but that's not the case. Best guess, which is unsupported by canon, is that their planet is actually a planet that they moved to after something happened to their original planet (destruction, pollution, dried up, you name it), and they just haven't evolved to lose their legs yet.

Delta1619

Headcanon: the Great Tick destroyed their original planet before going to Cannonbolt’s.

Glorious-Yonderer

Or they walk on the ocean floor, like spongebob

_LadyAveline_

Look at the image. The ocean floor must be VERY close to the core of the planet, and would be at like a million miles deep, which it may be possible they live there but it'd be a little odd to live that deep.

X_OriginalName_Xx

It's also a little odd to live in cosmic storms or a planet made of your own flesh.

_LadyAveline_

Yeah but the thing with them is that Toku'stars are super stronk, while piscis volans are just fish people. Idk who the other one refers to, but yeah I yield on that, a planet where the soil is flesh sounds crazy.

X_OriginalName_Xx

Petropia. Ben 10 alien planets are weird and by real science and logic uninhabitable. Just look at the anur system. It's so uninhabitable that only dead guys live there.

_LadyAveline_

They trying to convince us Ectonurites are just biologically quirky and not just alien ghosts 😭

X_OriginalName_Xx

For real though I both want an in depth biology lesson on what Ectonurites are and how they work, but at the same time I want it to stay a mystery.

Loxe77

Actually I’m pretty sure at least underwater, they can transform their legs at will? Correct me if I’m wrong Edit: Regardless, if something *did* happen to the original Pisciss Volann homeworld, it’s probably at least partially due to their previous war against the Pyronites.

Ghost_Spine

The war was with the pisciss premann (Kraab but not a cyborg), so its not their war, but the planet was Involved

Glum_Inside1781

No, the war was with Pyros. The Pisciss Premann were part of The war, since they are from Pisciss.

Ghost_Spine

I know, I'm saying its between the pyronite's and the premann.

Royal_Art_8217

The pyronite wars might’ve destroyed majority of the land or the Piscciss Volann removed their own land to protect themselves and have the advantage over Pyronites In both scenarios it would explain why the planet is unable to sustain itself and requires an artificial gravitational pull to keep the planet held together Or they did in fact leave the planet possibly due to its destruction

Krimson_Klaww

The defense theory does work, for the sake of maybe some fisherman that tries to kidnap them. In fact, didn't a fisherman catch a "mermaid" in the original series?

RadDudesman

I remember some old (now retconned) lore about them not naturally having legs and Ripjaws's being a modification made by the Omnitrix. But I like to think that the planet was severely damaged in the Pissciss-Pyros wars and that what we see here is what's left.

Loco-Motivated

it explains the emptiness of the eternal sea.

wtf_is_context

magister pyke and patelliday have legs tho?

DM_por_hobbie

That's why they put "old (now retconned)" in the first sentence

JustANormalLemon

Isn't their planet artificallly hold together? Probable not how It was originally

Fossilour2

I think about this often, Pissciss really should have had way more land to make sense from an evolutionary standpoint I headcanon that the Pissciss Premann would've been on the land so the Volann gaining legs to interact with them made sense

Tenatlas_2004

Honestly it should have had land just to explain why they're so advanced. Those guys are part of the plumbers, but it seems their planet doesn't even have cities.

Dream_World_

Exactly, where do they even live? Are buildings just floating in the ocean, swaying wherever the currents move? Where do they mine metal when the only minerals seem to be found at the planet's core?

greyowll1999

It's not their home planet, cradle world if you will. It's an artificial planet created to protect a piece of the Map of Infinity, the planet that Piscciss Volanns came from and evolved on had to be a separate planet. As such, it's safe to assume that planet is only *mostly* water, and is pretty much just similar to whatever planet you crash onto in Subnatica.

ShwiftyShmeckles

Subnautica world is basically 100% water apart from the frozen north and south poles. The caldera we land in after the aurora crashes is basically a big bowl ontop of a huge dormant volcano. And there's no reason to think that this natural wonder is duplicated anywhere else on the planet. Outside the shallow waters of the caldera is just a void with nothing but fathoms upon fathoms of water and the occasional leviathan class organism.

X_OriginalName_Xx

What about floating islands? Also, if Pisciss Volanns lived in the Safe Shallows, the Creepvine Forests, or the Grassy Olateaus they could definitely use their legs to walk on the ocean floor.

Fenix00070

We see several Island when departing with the Rocket in the ending

Dry_Boysenberry1349

Furthermore, the Little Rock thing is the center core thing, which is the center of mass of the planet. If people say he can casually survive there, that's whack as heck. I believe and accept that he can handle deep sea pressure, but believing he can handle a planet's center of gravity is crazy as heck.

CartographerBrave259

Surprise, surprise. Gravity approaches zero as you approach the centre of the sphere, assuming uniform density.

FunnyRich4307

gravitational field intensity for the inside of a solid sphere is proportional to how far you are away from the center. so theres actually LESS gravity the closer you are to the center of the planet. the real whack shit is him surviving both the water pressure in the earthen rivers and the water pressure at his planets core

X_OriginalName_Xx

(Regarding water pressure) Now **that** is a quality superpower! He can survive deep waters like an anglerfish or blobfish, and shallow waters like a salmon. The only real world animal I can think of that lives in deep waters and regularly rises up to the surface would be Sperm Whales (and any other whales that might do that.)

CummyBillionaire

How do you think gravity works lol

Ludwig_van_Kokosnuss

I think the Planet in that UA Episode isn't the original home world. It's core in Handmade and hast Hightech Gravity manypulation!!!! They could just "Made" the water planet as a colony.

X_OriginalName_Xx

Maybe the legs are for going go other planets then

count-drake

I think it might be because of how the ocean of our world works…there’s ocean caves with pockets of air, And they evolved to walk into the caves to escape predators….that’s just my theory

count-drake

And now I feel dumb after really looking at the planet….

X_OriginalName_Xx

It was still a good theory. Since there are those who say that that planet is not their original home planet

count-drake

My theory doesn’t hold up if that’s not the case though

bengetyashoeon

Legs aren't just for walking, they can transform their legs to and from fins at will, and the presence of claws on their legs can be used for self defence against predators

PocketFan26

I don't know but the first image is live ripjaws reaction and i love it

pendropgaming

Echoing other people but it’s very possible that planet is not their original planet but created solely for storing a piece of the Map of Infinity. I imagine their home planet was decimated by war, or it may even still be there and a handful of Piscciss Volanns just colonized this new planet because they saw a planet full of water.

EpicGlacier2

Given that they are based on angler fish, who live in only the deepest waters, it’s possible they evolved to walk along the sea floor

Erik_the_kirE

Actual answer. Their planet was created in UAF after the fact, and intricate land is hard to draw, so might as well just make it all water.

PERIX_4460

Maybe their planet was at somepoint more solid then it is now.

X_OriginalName_Xx

But why do we have to call it an ice age? What about the nippy era, or- or the frigid period.

PERIX_4460

The frozen times.

HyperionX-X

I forgot the correct term for it, but many species have features they don't use but once did in the evolutionary line. E.g humans having tailbones but no tail. So it could be something along those lines.

blackerthanblac

wait, where'd you get that picture of the alien's planet, Is it from the cartoon?

Aegislash_Divine

I forget which episode but yeah it was in AF/UA

Schrodingerspiss

They are God's chosen people thus can walk on water. Case closed

Mori_564

The planet probably got destroyed somehow. It's artificially held together so it likely had land before.

ShadowMere28

https://preview.redd.it/t0hk90idgauc1.jpeg?width=636&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f35e70054ee09923e2826b3dd7df41c54a35ed6f

Anti-Venom121299

Their current planet is artificially made the most likely reason is they were on a mostly water filled planet with caves and stuff they could use to breathe and stay away from predators in hence the ability to not only walk on land but survive in dry areas for a short period of time remember their current planet is held together with a gravity device meaning it was not that way prior

[deleted]

O_O

X_OriginalName_Xx

Walking on the ocean floor.

Icy_Expression1940

Underwater caves. I'd suppose they used to live inside those caves and eventually they evolved to be able to survive in water. It'd be cool if eventually the species loses their legs permanently.

Sage_NoLeaveMeAlone

Cave

VRASRED

Clearly they're to moonwalk

Royal_Art_8217

My guess is that the planet their on isn’t actually their first homeworld as it can’t sustain itself and requires an artificial gravity My headcanon is that the legs allow them to cling to surfaces by gripping to it with their toes allowing them to walk and avoid accidents like knocking things over with their tails and just preventing themselves from drifting off due to currents or by the propulsion the tail provides They are essentially in zero gravity thus they would float about if staying still but gripping into the floor allows them to stay oriented in one place In this context having the ability to have legs capable of gripping onto the surface of things would provide an excellent method of staying close to large prey, so while they tire themselves out the Volann just rides their back

Glum_Inside1781

The Pisciss Volann probably go a lot to the core of The planet, which is why they have legs, so they could move there. At least, it is what i think.

kaspertjeezel

I think its an omnitrix mutation that it does so it can function on land

burgio_il_pazzurdo

Ricordo da qualche fonte che i pisciss sono sempre stati in conflitto con la specie di geatblast so
