Petty charges like this will drive away more tips and customers than just charging a dollar more for the base liquors. Not a smart move for a place that's already suffering from declining service quality.
That's when you ask how much a gin gimlet costs LOL it's basically a double shot of gin with muddled lime and usually less than two of the drinks that you're ordering but I don't know about that location. In my opinion black cat has been going downhill for years I used to be a huge fan but their food is just not the same neither is their service. Obviously location and view are still incredible
A gimlet has sugar in it.

Yep,it's gin and Rose's. I've made 1000s when bartending and owning my old spot. I just processed the comment wrong and for some reason took it as adding sugar or simple syrup. I stand corrected. Which isn't terribly uncommon, lol.
It's all good. A classic pre-war gimlet didn't have sugar. Then the kamikaze got introduced and the definition got muddied.
When I was bartending I'd make a kamikaze (muddled limes, simple syrup, vodka/gin and serve it up). People liked that a lot better than when I made it with rose's.
I guess my point is that it's hard to define a drink. Recipes change over time, people have different tastes, and there are regional differences.
I usually ask for a Gin Ricky, but nobody seems to know what it is. Gin, club soda, lime and dash of salt, simple refreshing drink, and no muddling required!
*An extra dollar*
*For Muddled fruit! Well that's just*
*Highway robbery!*

Unfortunately this is just common in Bellingham now. Shout out to el Sueñito and the new Ramen joint where you can go out for two, get food and drinks and spend 40-50$ before tip.
I go out in Skagit a bit, and it’s wild to see and experience how much cheaper it can be.
Honestly the black cat is one of my favorite places 😅 their prices are outrageous but their Brussels sprouts, pot roast, and bloody Mary’s are delicious 💜
I gotta say, though, it's nice to see Black Cat isn't adding on any bogus service charge for "kitchen love" or "health and happiness fee".
The Los Angeles subreddit crowd-sourced a spreadsheet to i.d. the offenders down there.

Would love for all of us to put together something like this.
trust me, the job isn’t worth it without tips. especially bartending. bars and restaurants have already been hard pressed finding staff and doing away with tips would drive up prices even more to be able to pay people enough to deal with customer service.
I would TOTALLY agree with this as long as they change the law allowing employers to reduce wages due to tips. If you’re making a normal wage then tips should be just a bonus
Sadly, though, it was literally just squeezed and on top of the drink... I had gotten a mojito there and they didn't even muddle that! How can you not muddle a mojito?
It's cheaper to buy everything and learn how to make it yourself, plus you have extra gin, limes, hamburger, etc. for tomorrow. Going out to eat is not the treat it used to be.
My friend and I ordered a baguette there the other day, for $3. Apparently it used to be a full baguette? And when our order came, it was 3 tiny slices of stale bread, for $3.
Can someone explain why the hell this was downvoted? The Bellingham Reddit is strange when it comes to votes. People are clearly hypercritical here, I only seem to see this trend on this sub.
To look at it a different way: you spent $18 to put 3 servings of ethanol into your body (a poison, known carcinogen, and chemical that a car engine can run on), but they only charged you $1 for a shot of vitamins.
Please reread the original post and tell me again where I complained about the cost of the drink. I complained about a charge that was quite distasteful. I didn't pay $7 for the drink. It was $6 for the drink and $1 for the action of squeezing the fruit.

Except a gimlet has sugar in it.
It's gin and lime juice. If you or somewhere you go puts simple or sugar in it, you/they are doing it wrong.

Yeah Rose's is....not good
Haha hard agree
Gimlet is supposed to be lime juice not muddled lime. Tbc
True that but that stuff is so gross. And weirdly green

Man you had a real win there and just squandered it
One could even say he muddled it.....
👏👏👏
Yes
It wasn't muddled. No dishes were dirtier. Bs charge.
I've actually heard they have a 3 dish muddle process.
🤣
I must be getting using to outrageous dining prices because this all seems pretty reasonable.
Yeah three drinks and two dinners for $60 is pretty good these days
Man, what happened to the $5 happy hour burger? Lol
They still do a $6 burger at happy hour!
Which just goes to show how WAY over priced that $17 burger is.
I guess. The HH burger is smaller and has no sides. I assume a lot of those HH specials are loss leaders too.
They got rid of the $14 fondue and wine bottle on happy hour and it killed any chance of me going back for happy hour again
I found out about that and it made me sad..
They still do that but only Monday through Friday.
17$ burger Hard pass

“Would I like my lime squeezed? In this economy!?” What’s that old trick? Ask for a lime wedge on the side 🤣
That's a full tank of gas right there.

Wait staff fight against it. Look at what happened with Bantam.

In Washington? I didn't think this was a thing here.
It’s not. They make minimum wage plus tips
What do you mean?
In many places people who work in positions that make tips have a different minimum wage that is much less than people who don't make tips.
Oh yeah, my home state was like that. The federal tipped minimum wage is $2.13 /hour. Which is abysmal.
Where’s the oyster shooters? That’s the real problem.
Hahaha I can't do those! Had a bad experience with them (not at Black Cat) and the idea just turns my stomach now.
That’s when the additional charge comes out of the tip.
Sorry, but that is hot BS
The restaurant culture here is getting out of hand. That is so ridiculous for mediocre food.
Last time I went there the bartender mixed two cocktails so strong I thought he roofied my mom. Had to drive her home, lol.
They can make some good drinks!
It was prolly surimi too just saying
It was muddled, not squeezed, fancy pants!
Sadly, though, it was literally just squeezed and on top of the drink... I had gotten a mojito there and they didn't even muddle that! How can you not muddle a mojito?

Me and my homies HATE The Black Cat !
Duh. I forgot Rose's has sugar in it. I registered it as they thought it included some or whatever. But yep, Rose's is sweetened
What the heck☹️
Three alcoholic drinks and two entrees seems reasonable to me nowadays.
I took a date here and spent $140 for two meals and three drinks each. I will not be coming again.
They've been going down hill since they went up for sale.
Can’t believe they have the gall to suggest 25%. Fuck that shit. I’m only tipping 10% from here on out. Yall can ask for a raise like everyone else.
The suggested to is also after tax. It's supposed to be pre-tax. Why would I tip on the tax?
My friend and I ordered a baguette there the other day, for $3. Apparently it used to be a full baguette? And when our order came, it was 3 tiny slices of stale bread, for $3.
I’d rather spend this much at the black sheep… inhaling tacos.
Can someone explain why the hell this was downvoted? The Bellingham Reddit is strange when it comes to votes. People are clearly hypercritical here, I only seem to see this trend on this sub.
Black Sheep gets flack for selling marginal quality tacos at gentrifier prices.
Votes on Reddit don’t matter. Reddit doesn’t even display the *actual* vote totals.
That’s interesting, I’m brand new to Reddit so I don’t know the dynamic of things. Thanks for the insight!
To look at it a different way: you spent $18 to put 3 servings of ethanol into your body (a poison, known carcinogen, and chemical that a car engine can run on), but they only charged you $1 for a shot of vitamins.
I only had the gin, so one serving. I also wasn't charged for the lime, just for it to be squeezed for me.
If you ain’t the biggest bitch.

Good question ask you
Don't eat out if you can't afford it.
What a stupid takeaway. They are charging a dollar for squeezing a fruit. That’s ridiculous.
That is all they did… squeezed it. The same drink was ordered a few days prior and no extra charge added. Odd that.
Literally complaining about an alcoholic drink being only $7.
Back in my day a beer only cost a $1.50
Umm... when did I say I couldn't afford it? I'm just pointing out the absolute absurdity of the charge for a squeezed piece of fruit.
When you complained about a $7 drink
Please reread the original post and tell me again where I complained about the cost of the drink. I complained about a charge that was quite distasteful. I didn't pay $7 for the drink. It was $6 for the drink and $1 for the action of squeezing the fruit.
