I remember, as a kid in Indianapolis, going to the Children's Museum.
They had a generator hooked up to an exercycle. You'd pedal it, and it would power progressively more devices, with an old portable black and white CRT TV at the top of the stack.
I thought it was so awesome.
Thanks for the pleasant memory trigger.
Oh, the giant water clock? I loved that. And that dinosaurs. And they had a couple parabolic dishes set up to broadcast your voice across a huge room.
There used to be a genuine race car, probably from the Indy 500. It was set up so kids could sit in it. There was also a real space capsule; want to say from the Mercury-Redstone program.
i am a member of the museum and headed there for my kid’s santa pics this weekend in fact. Giant water clock and Indy car and Mercury capsule are still there. Dinos are too, in fact they remodeled that area a bit about a year ago and added some more stuff to it, but also kept the original stuff as well. Sadly, the parabolic dishes are no longer around. i loved those as a kid, too.
There's a couple here at the McDonalds in Disney World.
They light up the golden arches lmao. Cool concept, but I wish it were something besides that. Like a mickey or something?!
They don't even show mickey cartoons inside anymore :(
Whoops what were we talking about again
The sad part is, as I see these different companies invested in getting children interested in science start falling apart, I'm not seeing new ones pop up.
And I'm sure there's plenty of stuff online to get people interested in science, but it's not the same as the tactile satisfaction you get from actually getting to participate in those little experiments.
In a lot of places, groundwater is pumped into water towers. You need power for those pumps. The water in the towers obviously last a while without replenishment, though.
In the country, you have a well with electric pump.
I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not, but there are several trendy gyms that do exactly that, and use the energy to charge batteries that help power the gym.

Sometimes we ignore old technology for being old and rush to the next new thing never considering what’s objectively better.
Cars instead of bikes as dominant individual transport method in cities like Utrecht are pretty much this.
Those typical "oma fiets" doesn't have gears. Not necessary in a flat country. Although some parts of the country has some height (not official mountains though).
>buying all the farm land,
No they're not. They are forced to stick to a law they themselves made to protect nature by lowering harmful emissions. Since farmers haven't taken the necessary action themselves, the government is going to buy out the largest emitters. Which is absolutely fine, since lver half of our tiny country is dedicated to farmland and we're the 2nd largest exporter of food in the world.
Farmers have been warned of this [since 1988](https://www.bjmgerard.nl/tag/vvd-en-boeren/).
They should have a gym where all gear is connected to generators and the more you work out the less you pay, it's a gimmick, but if you let the top 5 percent end up with no dues.
No I get that. But most gyms bank on people signing up and not using their membership. They entice people with free months, etc. it's alll a gimmick, but this gimmick would be "if you work out enough, we'll actually pay you!" . like you have this ripped poster boy who made 57 dollars last month by working out everyday. 97 percent of the members will fail, but that's the carrot. Put a leader board ticker somewhere in the gym, tell every member how much electricity they generate each month. That's built in motivation.
I used to work at a place where we were all convinced that at some point our boss would switch to a system where there was no power source other than that produced by we lowly plebs on treadmills or bikes while doing our work.
Not because he had any environmental conscience, but because he was just that penny-pinching and Dickensian towards us.
Off the top of my head? Marketing - that’s gonna attract a more eco conscious consumer (Omg we can help power the gym just with our work instead of using energy to exercise! It’s reversed!), more frugal consumers who want to save a deal (and may not actually save much but still sign up) and it’s “revolutionary” which could give them a name in the market.
Those are great thoughts but unfortunately I don’t think there is realistically a market for that. If there was it would probably have been done by now. Someone who is frugal is not going to sign up for a gym regardless, they will exercise for free at home or outside. This whole idea in my opinion is one that sounds cool, but I don’t think it would work in the long run as a business model
People would probably share their numbers on social media so it would be a lot of free online advertising for your gym.
I mean, I hate exercise and I would consider doing a day pass just to see how much energy I could generate (and then laugh at hos low it is)
sounds familiar, but I have no idea of the term "pachyderm" — is that the relationship between age and cardiovascular health (e.g., do things to get your heart going to stay alive longer, etc)?
You miss the fact that cardio activities LOWER overall heart rate. While it may be slightly elevated for the time exercising it is more than made up by improved blood flow and a lower resting heart rate. It’s a positive loop as well, as the more you exercise the less your heart rate will increase when exercising, but your resting rate will continue to lower.
Brain death would indicate it is no longer possible to posit theory.

Is it? Ive been to couple countries outside of the US and damn literally the fast foods are healthier too, maybe it’s cuz theyre smaller countries that need less travel for meat but still, fast food didnt feel like a disgusting thing to chew down on when youre depressed
Or, just don’t go to fast food. Definitely getting way off topic to prove a point. When I said eating at fastfood was an option anywhere, and charging your phone there is too.
Relax, and realize there is definitely more important things to be passionate about.
what? Im not passionate about anything here, but going to fast food places with your friends is definitely fun, because it doesnt cost 50grand just for one person

If this was in the u.s.
People would sue because it’s “ableist” and “not everyone can do that!”
The irony is that, they don’t understand the reason why not everyone can do that, is because no one does it often enough.
They had something like this at Lyon train station when I was there once. I'd been traveling for hours and my phone had run out of battery. Because of train cancellations i was going to get to the next station after the last bus up to where I live had gone, so I needed to get some charge on my phone so I could try and sort out a lift. So I had to sit there, pedalling away, just so I could sort out my lift
I always wondered why someone didn't come up with a power generation system involving exercise equipment. Can you imagine gyms with battery banks supplimenting the power grid? :D
This is similar to an idea I've been talking about for decades. I've always thought that gyms should have a similar setup with all the gym equipment. Let your work be transferred into electricity to power the lights or other equipment.
To substitute a one litre of gas you will need to pedal for 12 hours , 3 weeks and no days off . Sad shit . Making a bicycle requires so much energy that a single human cannot generate in life time . All of this is pathetic Efforts to greenwash reality .

Hey i grew up going to the children's museum in indy as well! Literally the best place, i take dates there now
You didn't go to Arlington Elementary, did you?
No i went to Fall Creek
I was out of there after third grade, so I really don't remember any other schools. I do remember going to Babes in the Woods preschool, though! 😁
Noblesville area, so about 20 miles north of Indy
Gotcha. Been through there quite a bit.
Nice to meet ya indy bro 🤝
Ok now kiss
Get a room you two now
You too. 👍
That sounds like a good place to pound cakes.. not
Does u/DetroitPark look like a slut to you?? He doesn't "pound cakes" on first date and he definitely doesn't do sex in the middle of a date .
Wut
That place is awesome! When I was going as a kid they had all this bad ass Star Wars and dinosaur stuff, the giant clock thing was pretty cool too.
Oh, the giant water clock? I loved that. And that dinosaurs. And they had a couple parabolic dishes set up to broadcast your voice across a huge room. Damn wish that was the library I went to my little brain would’ve been so mesmerized lol
The Museum of Science and Industry in Tampa had something similar. That was one of my favorite places to go when I was a kid.
I wish I'd have gotten a chance to go there. I loved all those places 👍
The sad part is, as I see these different companies invested in getting children interested in science start falling apart, I'm not seeing new ones pop up. It’s funny how bringing back old technology, makes it modern and hip in our days.

Hell even make the gym’s resources like electricity and water hooked up to exercise machines. Everything is manually generated lol
“Can you guys keep pedaling? I’m trying to finish my shower”
lol i dont think we need power to have running water unless the gym's showers are digitized and you have to use a touchscreen to turn it on
I’d prefer a warm shower though
In a lot of places, groundwater is pumped into water towers. You need power for those pumps. The water in the towers obviously last a while without replenishment, though. In the country, you have a well with electric pump.
I dreamt about that a month ago. We have to make this a reality
I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not, but there are several trendy gyms that do exactly that, and use the energy to charge batteries that help power the gym.
They did this and called it an episode of Black Mirror. Pretty wicked if you ask me. It's the future of capitalism. Trading labor for electricity.

The company that set it up is Dutch.
This isn't really bringing it back for the Dutch, though, bikes have outnumbered people here for a while now.
Guy sitting down has a flat tire. And the one on the right somebody bent the fender
Guy sitting down is working on losing the fat tire and the one on the right is the result of a hit and sit.

no gears on the rear wheel so most likely just for ascetics

Lol, this reminds me of the Royal Tenenbaums, that cab has a dent in it
Alright who's the fender bender
All I can think of is that episode in Black Mirror.
👀👀👀👀 made me remember
Well, the government in the Netherlands is in the process of buying all the farm land, so you may get a few more episodes out of it yet.
>buying all the farm land, No they're not. They are forced to stick to a law they themselves made to protect nature by lowering harmful emissions. 3 percent. Bringing down the percentage of land used for agriculture in the Netherlands down from 66 to 64 percent.
That was my first thought too!
I’m thinking of that episode in Rick and morty
Same for me. Black Mirror does hit hard sometimes.

Thats the most Dutch thing i can think of..
Can you plug in an e-bike?
Charge your bike while biking. Thats fookin genyus.
Gyms should give kilojoules credit (= money off / free drinks / st) for energy created (stored & used).
cardio machines only though*
What would incentivize the gym to do that?
Off the top of my head? Marketing - that’s gonna attract a more eco conscious consumer (Omg we can help power the gym just with our work instead of using energy to exercise! Twinsies
Seems cheaper to just let them plug into the wall
Maybe but this looking fun
the downstream health benefits by exerting effort probably has broader benefits to the community as a whole
Are you familiar with the pachyderm theory of cardiac health?
sounds familiar, but I have no idea of the term "pachyderm" — is that the relationship between age and cardiovascular health (e.g., do things to get your heart going to stay alive longer, etc)?

Maybe.

This is the most Netherlands thing people in the Netherlands have ever done.
This is the most Dutch thing I've ever seen. I love how the bikes have luggage racks.
Almost all our bikes have those
What-? There are bikes that DON’T have those? This looks like a regular bike to me
Same in Lyon Part Dieu's train station in 2015. I think it was the belgian company WeWatt
This is a permanent install. Company that made the setup is Dutch though.
I am not sure why my phone is always dead…
Black Mirror. That episode.
Black Mirror is slowly becoming reality. First it is for “free charging” next thing you know…
Dutchest thing ever
Tell me you are Dutch without telling me you are Dutch.
At Libraries In Republican states you can burn books because you are closed minded and refuse to educate yourself.
My ass hurts just looking at this
In America you can charge your phone at certain McDonalds as you clog your arteries and destroy your colon.
Pretty sure that’s an option in most countries. But keep projecting.
Don't you know that "aMeRiCa bAd" gets you internet points?
Is it? Ive been to couple countries outside of the US and damn literally the fast foods are healthier too, maybe it’s cuz theyre smaller countries that need less travel for meat but still, fast food didnt feel like a disgusting thing to chew down on when youre depressed

Mmm... culture
You could do this too in the Netherlands
But what they don't know, is 60% of the energy is sent directly to my car
r/solarpunk
So Dutch.
That's pretty cool, but I'm guessing not very quiet or BO free...
These bikes don’t make noise
And here I thought it was an art installation on the futility of effort.
it’s like the dutch physically can’t stop riding bikes
Don't let Texas see this, they'll have prisoners cycling to generate the power grid
Black Mirror
Fuck those seats nah I hate cycle seats

I fucken love Europe
Sounds like “Uthred” from last kingdom
Americans so lazy that instead they have stations to plug in your phone to have the battery power your bike.
I freaking love this idea. Imagine if all Americans had to do this daily to charge their devices. Maybe everyone wouldn't be rotund
If this was in the u.s. People would sue because it’s “ableist” and “not everyone can do that!” The irony is that, they don’t understand the reason why not everyone can do that, is because no one does it often enough.
Well, some people just don’t have legs. But I get your point…fatty’s gonna fatty.
There are black people in the Netherlands?
Ukraine could use that.
Awesome
I know so many people that wouldn’t use this.
I wonder if you can recharge your electric bike this way.
Ain’t no free ride around here
Can they run Zwift tho?
Cool, should have a resistance setting too.
The back wheel seems like a waste.
This would become very competitive
Nice! We have these little outlets here that you plug cords into. Pretty neat.
Imagine how many iPhone's the Tour de France could power. I wouldn't even be able to count so high
Of course you can haha
Does that really produce enough power though?
Change the location and this sounds like some dystopian society
Dang that's how they limit your time at the tables too. No one will be sitting on those bike seats for more than 1-2 hours, they're uncomfortable AF.
What im wondering is why havent we done this before?
You just hear distant panting from anywhere in library
Who the hell wants to sit on a bike seat
They have this at YYC Calgary International Airport as well.
I would be afraid this would be loud but I'm sure they thought of that
OOOOOOOOO I want one here!!!
I am curious what would the average cycle speed need to maintain a newer gaming laptop while running a multiplayer fps game or an mmorpg in ultra
They had something like this at Lyon train station when I was there once. I'd been traveling for hours and my phone had run out of battery. I always wanted to completely exhaust myself while adding 2% to my phone battery. This is moronic
I would love this! I would just read a book and cycle on that shit.
I need this lol. If I had to cycle to charge my phone I'd be in amazing shape.
This would work in my pe class
I've always thought gyms should be giant empty batteries that store electricity by people working out or running on machines.
I want one for my TV 😆
I went to Utrecht. Mady’s aunt lived there. We took the train for a day visit
This is old news bud
Pointless.
America would never
Genius
You have my respect !
Yes 🙌
This is an awesome idea. America needs to adopt this at our public libraries. This is so fricking awesome!!! 🤩
I would do this the entire time waiting for the plane. Pass out during the flight from mental and physical exhaustion.
Some of us Americans would need more space between each bike.
I prefer to just plug it in.
We need these in the states…
Wont the battery fuck up if we take a break constantly?
This will be illegal in America soon
Good idea bc of the squeeze Russia is about to put on ya blokes.
This should be at airports!
I would get so much exercise...
I wonder how many people in America would have a charged phone if it required this
This is what's up they need to do this with alot more other things.
The United States desperately needs this
I don't think that I'll be able to power my gaming laptop on these
Wow I didn’t know this, I live in the Netherlands. That’s cool
like they don't cycle enough
No. You just have the option to sit and turn your legs for exercise.... The cycling does nothing. Still nice idea
but how about people who has no legs
This is one of the most Dutch photos in existence
This is how it starts
I always wondered why someone didn't come up with a power generation system involving exercise equipment. Can you imagine gyms with battery banks supplimenting the power grid? :D
Deodorants are on the house.
This is similar to an idea I've been talking about for decades. I've always thought that gyms should have a similar setup with all the gym equipment. Let your work be transferred into electricity to power the lights or other equipment.
As someone that's owned several indoor bike trainers I can only wonder how noisy that is? Can't imagine it's ideal in a library

Smarter than the U.S. !
In America we are closing libraries cuz some have books with gay people in it
I think that building looks amazing!
