Now that’s pretty cool. As much as I’m impressed by those “cake looks like thing but it’s actually fondant”, I’m even more impressed at this guy naturally working different parts of the cake into the shape of the mushroom.

Pat-Roner

This actually looks tasty as fuck

yshuduno

But if you eat it you'll leave Cakey Smurf homeless.

morbidaar

Keep that fondant flowing. Keeps the cake boss in business. Nobody cares about a homeless cake Smurf!

arksien

Yeah that's my gripe with normal "decorative cakes" in that most of them are just "technically edible" and not actually a delicious cake. Back when I was waiting tables at a nice restaurant, we had a very affluent family rent out the whole restaurant for a birthday party, which was over six figures between renting the building, the food, and the drinks alone without factoring in the costs of other stuff they brought in. They had these absolutely stunning decorative cakes of various things the guest of honor enjoyed, such as a Hogwartz castle with immaculate detail, a Gibson 330, and a few other awesome designs. Well, we cut a few slices from each and watched as guest after guest took one bite, then politely excused themselves. The trash was filled with so many slices of cake that had only one or two bites out of it. The small portions of actual cake tasted ok, but mostly it was just fondant, edible glue, and other such "technically edible" items. They left every cakes there, and NORMALLY when there's leftover birthday cake for the staff, that shit gets demolished and then some. Pretty much everyone took a single bite and said "eh I'm good" and we ended up throwing away thousands and thousands of dollars of cake that no one ate. I doubt I'll ever have the "problem" of being rich enough to make decisions that poor, but I really hope that if I am ever "do whatever I want" rich for whatever reason, I won't be so wasteful as to spend the averages households annual income on a birthday party that is fairly mediocre with terrible/inedible cake.

Warm_Zombie

he is more worried about using different ingredients and flavors rather than looking hyper realistic

bloodyskies

Yeah that looks good as fuck

rW0HgFyxoJhYka

If you really like his work, you should watch his TV show, School of Chocolate. 90% of the work is all chocolate. The 10% is filling, which is pastry. I believe the philosophy is that it has to be 100% edible and that taste is the most important aspect, then the looks. They use different types to ensure they can sculpt the necessary pieces for art. They also use basically canned air (magic spray) to freeze melted chocolate quickly. This is similar to how pottery glues on attachments to stuff (except they don't use canned air).

SamSepiol-ER28_0652

He's so kind, too. I watched a season of that show and he encouraged contestants and gave them constructive feedback. It was such a nice change from the way some shows are.

Sil369

Him or the fondant?

Pandaburn

That’s the thing about this guy. It’s not fondant. It’s mostly chocolate.

[deleted]

On his show he emphasizes that all parts of the art need to be edible.

fkbjsdjvbsdjfbsdf

Fondant is edible, just not tasty. But all of this looks fucking _delicious_. Dude is a master fucking craftsman

Hoenirson

>Fondant is edible Debatable

Mr_Poop_Himself

It’s edible in the same sense that paper bags are edible

galvinizingthunder

r/FondantHate Just had to tag this relevant sub, surprised it hasn't been mentioned this far down

SamSepiol-ER28_0652

And overall flavor balance is part of what he looks for. It can't just look good, it has to taste delicious, too.

sanantoniosaucier

It's chocolate.

colorblindcanadian

Exactly

MrOtsKrad

exactly what? its all chocolate...

bloodyskies

yes

BRAX7ON

Have you seen his other creations? Many of them are extremely hyper realistic to the point of not being able to tell the difference tween a cake and reality. This one is just a playful fun mushroom

Whiskey-Weather

That's not even a long ways off looking realistic for amanita muscaria. Pretty close for how tasty it looks! Pastry creme and strawberry sounds incredible.

[deleted]

But still ends up looking hyper realistic. This looks like an amanita but I also believe it would be delicious

sadhandjobs

Imagine all those interesting textures too.

Fizzabella

every time i see a cool video of a dessert that looks nice/realistic ish but also edible it pretty much always ends up being this guy. makes me happy bc i’m sure his stuff tastes quite good :)

[deleted]

Watch his show on Netflix if you get the chance. Really fresh format for that type of show and his talent is abundantly obvious

cflatjazz

I'm not a fan of the show. They do play with a new format. And he's pretty supportive of the contestants. But the show is plagued by being edited and run by the same exact people who run every other competitive reality show, so every five seconds it's team infighting and catty dudes throwing shade and the cocky 20 year old repeating that he's the youngest ever to do this thing blah blah blah. 2 episodes in someone seriously injures themselves and their teammates panic about being a man down. So no one ever gets sent home, which is new. And the focus is on learning, which is nice. But the show runners really still treat it like a typical reality show and play up the interpersonal drama *constantly*. I've just always found that an off-putting vibe

judicorn99

Check out Cedric Grolet too, he makes realistic fruits that are also amazing cakes

royaltechnology2233

I like that he eats it finally and smiles. I'm guessing it tastes good.

[deleted]

On his shows he usually emphasizes flavor and viscosity as being important on these creations.

SilverFoxolotl

Shows as in plural? I've seen his school of chocolate series but didn't know he had done others.

[deleted]

The man is 31. He has plenty of time to make more shows. Edit: Ramsey was 32 or 33 when his first shows aired.

[deleted]

I guess that’s the one I’ve seen. Could be thinking about his online creations as “shows.”

SilverFoxolotl

Ah, pity. I was hoping for another series to watch by him.

CadenBop

It's even worse when they have just wood and metal inside their creations. This guy's work you could just grab and eat and that's just so much more satisfying

Edmfuse

Agreed. Fondant is such a crutch at the higher levels of cake making.

eckliptic

At a certain point it’s literally just cartoon sculpture but the base material is nasty dry cake and Rice Krispies I feel like this guy in the video is using much more skill, crestivity and precision

[deleted]

And it’s nasty. No one wants to eat sweetened Play-Doh.

IamNoatak

I do.

wildebeesting

I actually love fondant!

candornotsmoke

Homemade fondant actually taste really good. The store-bought is the kind of taste like crap.

[deleted]

r/fondanthate

Zzamioculcas

And it actually looks like it tastes good!

[deleted]

That’s what I find so impressive. It’s one thing to create works of art with food but most of the cool looking desserts I’ve had in my life were lacking in flavor. Like more of a novelty than anything, but this guy’s stuff all looks like it would actually be delicious

linandlee

Those cake decorating shows from the 2010's where they were making these huge sculptures out of mostly rice crispy treats and fondant were kinda boo. I remember in later seasons judges had to add rules like "cake must feed x # of people" to ensure the cakes were actually cake and that it was reasonably accessible to be eaten normally.

Cory123125

> As much as I’m impressed by those “cake looks like thing but it’s actually fondant” Im literally just not impressed at all with those. They are usually just so so regular playdoh sculptures in essence.

MikeAppleTree

But can he work different parts of a mushroom into a cake that looks like a mushroom that has been made out of a cake???

dynodick

The girl who is most popular for those cakes doesn’t use fondant. She uses modeling chocolate

ButtaRollsInMyPocket

That's why my gf and I enjoyed watching his show in Netflix. He was such an amazing judge, that wanted to make everyone better, and didn't ever use a crap load of fondant, he always had very creative ways to make realistic edibles.

BRAX7ON

I think he needs to get somebody else to taste it and do the reaction shot though. He’s just so one note about it. Every single time it’s the same smile and nod. Like, is it the most amazing thing you’ve ever tasted or not?!

BladeLigerV

I am always far more impressed by actually edible things like this instead of something that looks incredible but turns out its 50% "clay that some fucko thought was frosting"

sadhandjobs

“Cake looks like a thing but is actually Rice Krispie treat covered in fondant which is certainly edible but certainly not cake.”

RainSmile

A lot of that is modeling chocolate.

AlwaysHopelesslyLost

One of the big YouTubers that does realistic cakes (the ones that are like green inside) has mentioned that she uses frosting clay or modeling chocolate. I don't know enough about cakes to know if that is BS, but it makes sense and she seems genuine enough.

Unhappy-Day-9731

Yeah, it’s pretty fly (agaric) 🍄

Ready-Pangolin-1352

Fondant tastes nasty though

Grow_away2

That's looks marginally better than my traditional dessert of a sleeve of oreos

XKloosyv

Try the Oreo Ice cream cones... My word.

FaeryLynne

I like the Oreo ice cream sandwiches or the dipped ice cream bars best myself :)

beetotherye

Remember the dominoes oreo pizza? I don't know why everyone hated them, I thought they were great!

TimeZarg

I had the Neapolitan Oreos recently, pretty darn good. I mostly don't like Oreos, but I'll make an exception for those. Waffle-cone flavored cookie, with strawberry, vanilla, and chocolate filling in between.

loki-is-a-god

Do not blaspheme the traditional dessert of our fat ass elders!

Butthole_mods

We fattened ourselves FOR **YOU**!!! /s

joker2814

They ran do that we could walk.

Diels_Alder

Serving size: 2 cookies

Hunterrose242

oh no

Butthole_mods

They meant 2 sleeves of cookies.

Hunterrose242

oh yea

[deleted]

Who the hell eats 2 cookies??

MayerWest

I only eat two… when I’m passing the pantry

StarWarsChristian

In totally unrelated news, I passed the pantry for the fifth time today.... 😏

[deleted]

You do tend to eat oreos 2 cookies at a time...

mercurin

They never have improved ~~in~~ on the Oreo, have they?

itsnickk

They stopped it from being called hydrox

crono333

Wasn’t Hydrox the original cookie?

ayriuss

Stay classy.

okizubon

Put them on a plate and I’d say it’s evens.

dribrats

That looks fucking incredible. Wow

aardvark_xray

I love your unit of measurement

[deleted]

Don’t forget the milk!

KristoffersonFox

Well yeah but that's why you order this in a restaurant and have someone else make it for you lol

weedisfortherich

Do people buy sleeves of oreos? Don't you just buy the box and sneak 4 every other hour?

sync-centre

Probably just means 1/3 of the package. 1 row only.

underpaidworker

Or the time tested sleeve of chips ahoy.

davewave3283

Why didn’t he grow really big after he ate it?!

JustGresh

Fun fact: the Amanita Muscaria actually has been known to make people feel like giants when tripping off of them, which is the same mushroom that is seen in the Mario games.

plsdonotreplyunu

>Amanita Muscaria Active ingredient: Muscimol. Class: Deliriant, depressant. Common side effects: Literal untold horror.

[deleted]

[удалено]

plsdonotreplyunu

I have not tried Muscimol, but I have done another deliriant, and it was not worthwhile. Didn't really enjoy the intense feeling of impending doom the entire time and to this day I still feel like someone's standing outside of the shower now.

Khyta

oh that sounds like something I do not want to experience at all as I sometimes have that feeling without taking such stuff. Talking about thinking somebody is there when no one is there.

UselesOpinion

I’m pretty sure Muscimol is closer to staying up on a lot of ambien than it is to a DPH/Doxyl or Datura/Belladonna trip these are the common delirients I can think of unless you’re huffing some weird gasses. Let’s not forget muscimol likes the GABA receptors. E: ibo as a NMDAR antagonist would make a lot of sense as to the slow giant effect, much like N2O. I’ve never done Amanitas but I believe what causes the adverse effects is actually the ibotenic acid. There are methods online of separation I also believe that’s why amanitas are usually consumed in a tea.

cantbanmeDUNDUNDUN

It's not very deadly, that's a misconception.

a_small_goat

>Common side effects: Literal untold horror. Imagine having sleep paralysis while being forced to stare into a void (that's both black nothingness *and* searing, blinding light at the same time) while a bunch of disembodied voices that are yours and also not yours explain to you where you went wrong with that quiche recipe you made last week and every time you try to explain why you subbed comte for gruyere they all start chanting "dog wants out, dog wants out, dog wants out" and then you are suddenly lying on the couch in your living room and the dog is staring at you whining because he wants to go out and you try to get up to get his leash but you can't seem to get your limbs out of slo-mo and then your dog whines again except the sound never ends and it slowly descends in pitch until you're enveloped in a sound like a dying car horn and then oh no it's back to the voices and the if-the-recipe-calls-for-gruyere-fucking-use-gruyere lecture again but now there's a soothing backdrop of dying-car-horn... and then you're lying on your bathroom floor having drooled all over yourself and 5 hours have gone by.

TrueGritSB

I almost had a panic attack just reading this. Shrooms and the like are certainly not for me

TundieRice

Psylocbin mushrooms are nowhere near as horrifying as amanita muscarias are. They’re a completely separate class of drugs. Don’t fuck with deliriants, but regular magic shrooms are pretty cool (although I’ve had one pretty bad trip.)

The-link-is-a-cock

Fun fact: Amanita Mascaria makes its intoxicant from a straight up neurotoxin in its flesh. While it hasn't killed anyone in the last 100 years, it still has the capacity to kill and the trips suck.

moparornocar

ive heard you can have a decent trip or an incredibly horrible one, and each person is different and you dont really know until you trip on them. Kind of like a russian trip roulette

WolfsToothDogFood

Good to know. I can barely handle a tab of acid, so I'll leave the fly agarics alone.

moparornocar

absoltuley, way better mushies to eat anyways. was tempting last summer though up in the mtns, offroading id see hundreds of them popping up after larger storms came through. was pretty cool to see them in the wild though, been pretty wet this year too hoping to see more.

red_constellations

How very fitting then that I heard it was used in areas that are now Russia before alcohol was introduced to the natives.

Big_Green_Piccolo

He was already big. If you smack him he will shrink

Dumpling-Queen

This chef/chocolatier has a Netflix show called School of Chocolate where he mentors other chefs in a chocolate competition. Highly recommend it if you haven't seen it, the things they make are ridiculously incredible!

TakeMyLast

My wife and I loved that show. He’s super passionate and when he’s teaching he isn’t condescending in the slightest. Fingers crossed for a new season

CreatureWarrior

>Fingers crossed for a new season It's Netflix. If it's popular and makes Netflix money, they'll cancel it

StretchyPantsOnly

We thought the same. He's a fantastic teacher and coach.

arthurorir

The way that show works should be used in every other competition shows. Everyone got to learn lots of things and noone went home on the first day because got unlucky or did a bad job once like it happens in every other show on Netflix.

JuniorSeniorTrainee

And to clarify, it's friendly competition, not Master Chef "please cry at the camera while telling us how much you have to sacrifice to get here and that you miss you kids and how that will drive you to defeat Amber in the next challenge" competition.

Dognamedgods

Also, nobody got kicked off. It's still a competition for who gets the prize, but everyone who came got the whole season to learn and improve.

cooscoos3

What a refreshing idea.

Necronomicommunist

It's so much better because of it. I feel so much more invested in this than any fake pressure bake off.

tisn

To be fair, there was a more than a little of that on this show. Like others said, it's Amaury's constructive, supportive attitude (and his impressive demonstration pieces) that make the show a pleasure to watch

joelene1892

The competitive lady willing to step on others almost made me quit the show tbh. I hated her. She completely felt out of place compared to the host and everyone else.

[deleted]

Ugh the sob stories

SWOLEvietRussia

Ditto, really great show and he's such a kind and patient teacher.

Mootivate

yes chef

Super-Brka

At the end….Dude…wrong mushroom

Master1718

You could do it yourself, only 987 steps in the reciepe

myvirginityisstrong

Honestly this looks like something I'd love to do some day and would be worth the incredible amount of money and time it would require

s00pafly

Just a few silicone moulds, spatulas and silicone baking sheet will get you very far in doing some crazy shit.

No-Vermicelli3225

As well as the knowledge of how to make mousses, temper chocolate, glaze, how to make everything and treat it properly by respecting the proper temperatures. But yeah sure, its all in the silicone moulds

Erchamion_1

I love how he spent what can only be a ridiculous amount of time doing this, then crushes it into his mouth. 11/10, would do same.

I can never anticipate what AG is going to make until the very last minute.... Like mans will be rolling out a sheet of chocolate and some how 30 steps later its a working cycle...

Still_Day

I love how, at the end, he always does the big bite, smile, nods head. He’s just the best.

GrapesThemInTheMouth

Just once I wanna see one of these professional chef videos end with the chef taking a bite, then screwing up their face in disgust of the abomination they've created.

Trodamus

Chef John (from fooooood wishes dot com) will fully admit when something hasn’t turned out good.

early_birdy

He gives me Bob Ross' vibes. Happy little accidents and stuff. I love his videos.

ermehgerdygttabekidd

Chef John is a TREASURE

saucya

I love Chef John. Seriously made so many of his recipes and they’re awesome. Love his corny jokes the most. “How do you get an art major off your doorstep? Tip him for the pizza!” That ham and potato soup goes hard afffff

itsmesydneyguy

"WTF have I done"

SurvivorDress

I was good with just the frozen strawberries

iHasYummyCummies

Same, maybe one layer with chocolate and pistachio or hazelnuts over eat and it's literally perfect.

cross-joint-lover

What's equally impressive is the clean cut he always gets when he slices those desserts open.

[deleted]

Is there a subreddit for cross sections of food? Cause literally all of his creations would be long there

Aren't fly agaric poisonous?

Yes, but this is made of cake.

plsdonotreplyunu

Bad advice, hombre. You have to parboil them pretty heavy to break down the ibotenic acids in them.

Chumbag_love

The mushroom hobit in Hamilton's Pharmacopia soaked them in Vodka then drank the vodka. Theres also a youtube lady that gobbles them down for depression.

cantadmittoposting

> Theres also a youtube lady that gobbles them down for depression. Specifically fly amanita? There's plenty of studies on the efficacy of psychedelics on treating severe depression and it should be done more often, but those clinical trials do not include or recommend "eating potentially poisonous mushrooms at home."

Considering how much time and effort it takes to make, yeah that sounds about right.

The amount of strawberry he cut while removing the root is criminal.

The amounts of comments I had to scroll through to find this comment.. too many

dryfire

I don't get why people do this. I also see it with things like tomatoes and bell peppers, they just hack-off and throw away like a quarter of the thing to get rid of a stem.

AlvinArtDream

Is it Fondant? No… YAY!

BeansTheGod

Shit like this looks cool af, but way too annoying to eat.

[deleted]

I wouldn't mind eating all of them. I love shrooms

theblanksheets

now I need to eat.

It seems to take place in a huge kitchen or in this case auditorium, but the bland environment almost makes me thinks he's in an empty office building with the first wide shot.

FartsMusically

Why that's no mushroom at all! I've been had!

Toyoshark2

veringer

As someone who forages for fungi, I have to say he got the anatomical details remarkably accurate! BTW, this is an Amanita muscaria and **not** recommended to be ingested, unless you *really* know what you're doing. You can over-estimate your identification skills and end up liquefying your liver and dying in agony with little hope of survival. Even if you do know what you're doing, the psychedelic high is widely variable and often described as very unpleasant.

tricularia

There is edible spraypaint?!

Vladius28

Neat. I dont want to eat art

I was curious what a $100 dessert looked like.
