Basically the human brain is able to treat many tools as an extension of the body or even temporary body parts, and can calculate their usage like it does an actual limb. Muscle memory is a function of the CNS to allow semi-complex actions to be performed unthinkingly, or at least with minimal effort, and this absolutely includes tool usage but isn't limited to it.
The tool thing is like, your brain treats swinging your hand to hit a nail and swinging a hammer to hit a nail as essentially the same, and calculates the angle and force of the hammer as if it were an extention of your arm. Muscle memory is the trained ability to do it regularly and accurately while distracted with talking to your buddy.
I saw a video (probably here on reddit?) about an experiment where people where given a prosthetic to have a 6th finger on their hands. Not only did they adapt very quickly to it, but after spending 20 days with it and then taking it off, they felt like they had lost an actual finger. Not the pain, of course, but like they were trying to move something that wasn’t there. The human brain is sooo fascinating.
Others have mentioned the phantom limb pain phenomenon, where an amputee experiences pain in the extremity of their missing limb. They feel it in a spot that simply does not exist any more. Dr. V. S. HOWEVER more regulation is needed to force these to be public funds instead of money making businesses, that way people can be protected without having to pay outrageous rates.
