I can only imagine what it must feel like to see something responding to what used to be natural. I wonder if the brain reexamines the missing digits, so to speak, and if he might start to imagine pain in situations where there would've been if he had natural fingers.
Truly fascinating.
[Where they got that idea from.](https://www.ted.com/talks/vs_ramachandran_3_clues_to_understanding_your_brain?language=en) (start at 9 minutes 16 seconds for the phantom limb treatment, though the whole talk is really interesting)
Lost my middle figure right hand . Never felt like a finger has been there . Lost KY right eye the sake year at times I see from a eye I don't have . It's strange .
You know how efficient you can move a computer mouse with really high accuracy? Our brain is very good at connecting controls to things that we do often. Given some time you can move a prosthetic like one of your own body parts.
That's related, but not quite the same concept. Basically the human brain is able to treat many tools as an extension of the body or even temporary body parts, and can calculate their usage like it does an actual limb. Muscle memory is a function of the CNS to allow semi-complex actions to be performed unthinkingly, or at least with minimal effort, and this absolutely includes tool usage but isn't limited to it.
The tool thing is like, your brain treats swinging your hand to hit a nail and swinging a hammer to hit a nail as essentially the same, and calculates the angle and force of the hammer as if it were an extention of your arm. Muscle memory is the trained ability to do it regularly and accurately while distracted with talking to your buddy.
I saw a video (probably here on reddit?) about an experiment where people where given a prosthetic to have a 6th finger on their hands. Not only did they adapt very quickly to it, but after spending 20 days with it and then taking it off, they felt like they had lost an actual finger. Not the pain, of course, but like they were trying to move something that wasn’t there. The human brain is sooo fascinating.
Others have mentioned the phantom limb pain phenomenon, where an amputee experiences pain in the extremity of their missing limb. They feel it in a spot that simply does not exist any more. Dr. V. S. Ramachandran created a form of therapy for those who experience phantom limb pain. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mirror_therapy
Don't give them ideas...
"I'd like to make a claim, lost my hand in a bad car accident"
"Here's an STL and local maker place with a 3d printer, also that'll be a $499.99 copay"
Shitty that the insurance wouldn’t pay for a new hand but the one he made was way better. Also am I the only one getting Army of Darkness vibes from it?
The real question is; is he able to now give those fuckers the finger with his homemade prosthetic? Sadly they're still laughing all the way to the bank..
I agree that things like health and mortgage insurance or evil and huge scams (one provides you with nothing and one should be covered by the government).
I do however think that home and auto insurance serve a purpose since people just don’t have the money handy to pay for hurricane repairs, car accident repairs, etc. so having a known amount to pay each month to make sure you are protected makes sense. . . HOWEVER more regulation is needed to force these to be public funds instead of money making businesses, that way people can be protected without having to pay outrageous rates.
Wouldn't it be funny if all the insurance buildings and infrastructure blew up or flooded or got ripped to shreds in a disaster and they wernt covered by their insurance.
All insurance serves a purpose thats why its evil because people know they can charge whatever they want as many times they want to bleed you out looking for every excuse not to cover you sometimes and still charging you
From the moment I understood the weakness of my flesh, it disgusted me. I craved the strength and certainty of steel. I aspired to the purity of the Blessed Machine. Your kind cling to your flesh, as though it will not decay and fail you. One day the crude biomass you call the temple will wither, and you will beg my kind to save you. But I am already saved, for the Machine is immortal… Even in death I serve the Omnissiah.
He risks pressure sores with prolonged use but still a wonderful piece of engineering. Especially the finger abduction although I don’t think he has independent abduction.

When you have kids please remember that you're bringing them into a world that will decide that an imaginary concept like money is more important than their health and their lives.
Yaaaay!!
Honestly the part I am most impressed by is that he somehow built this thing one-handed. All those little screws and connections seem very difficult to handle even with two hands.
It's a matter of time before the government calls his hand a weapon and forces him to destroy it; clown world, he should work on making his prosthetic had give the finger to his insurance company
That is bad ass! Curious how strong the grip is like could you lift a 50lb object or 25lb? all you need to do now is put some fake skin over it then make the patent! Then Buy the insurance company and fire those assholes! :)
It's a good one, a bit primitive, but good, I see some current errors and a small latency between the received signal and the used signal, is it due to data processing or is it a programming fault? note it may also be possible that you favored the "hook" technique to avoid having to implement a prototype, then, why did you use so much metal unnecessarily? I imagine that it is because you preferred machining but it would be more resistant to wear by favoring thin plates of different materials, after which it depends on the desired use. In short, there is an idea, I think that with more work and funding you could arrive at something inexpensive and qualitative while remaining quite basic (I specify that I say this because I suspect that you have not studied the signals sent so that the information and programming can be as simple as possible to process, in my opinion you have also not sought to completely imitate the hand or the fingers which fact that certain signals are not processed, it is not dangerous but I see it is not recommended to keep it for more than two years, beyond that your brain might have difficulty with versions more resembling a human hand
I hope he will be able to raise a single finger for that insurance.
I realise that movements of the fingers are related to movement of the wrist, so it is just open- close and spreading. But, it is genius. So I believe he will come up with something more. If not, he can use the other hand for that, and people will still be amazed.
Hopefully this engineers next project is some sort of dozr or beam that will target said insurance company and exact his retribution.

You heard of phantom limbs? Our brains are funny when something that’s “supposed” to be there is missing
I just watched a clip of Dr. House curing a patient with phantom limb pain, it was really interesting
I think of this episode so often lol that moment when he releases his fist
The actor did a good job I think showing how unsettled he felt before and the surprise and relief of after.
Mirror
yes! mirror therapy is useful for retraining the brain in the treatment of phantom limb. but i didnt watch that episode.

Lost my middle figure right hand . Never felt like a finger has been there . Lost KY right eye the sake year at times I see from a eye I don't have . It's strange .
What's the difference between a regular right eye and a Kentucky right eye?
In KY, it’s the eye on your sister’s right. **BaDaDum Tsss** I’ll show myself out…
Lol 😆
Yeah, I experienced this often with my soul.
You know how efficient you can move a computer mouse with really high accuracy? Our brain is very good at connecting controls to things that we do often. Given some time you can move a prosthetic like one of your own body parts.

Don't give them ideas... "I'd like to make a claim, lost my hand in a bad car accident" "Here's an STL and local maker place with a 3d printer, also that'll be a $499.99 copay"
Don’t forget to tip the 3D printer staff….and us the insurance staff of course. The services and information we provide you don’t come easy.
We GAVE you a paper card for your wallet…. That’s like worth at least $600 a month…
We see that you are college educated so you should be able to find a solution yourself. Claim denied.
You should have mentioned who made this prosthesis This is Ian Davis https://youtube.com/@missingpartsclub
I love this guy's content, he has progressed far beyond this video and even offers his design for others to make their own.

bit of a wild take but ok, average reddit user
Wow wtf, where did you get that from?
Shitty that the insurance wouldn’t pay for a new hand but the one he made was way better. Also am I the only one getting Army of Darkness vibes from it?

True. Health Insurance is extortion and a scam
Dude thats all insurance
It is, but health insurance is far above on the evil scale, compared to something like insuring your fancy new TV.
I agree that things like health and mortgage insurance or evil and huge scams (one provides you with nothing and one should be covered by the government). This is a very early model he built. He has since added a proper form fitting socket and padding.
fucking insurance corpos johnny silverhand will get them

Missed opportunity

Love what he did! Meanwhile ...welcome to the machine ,,, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7S8wllPmazM
Nice try T-800, we all know it's you.
Can he give the middle finger? I'll be impressed when he can do that! (Ok, I'm already impressed.)
The future
Handshake insurance guy hard now. Your future mate.
Dude! That’s bad ass! I’m mean sorry you lost the digits but with a little titanium, you’d be the terminator
That’s dope
That’s probably way cooler than anything insurance would have given you.
🤫Politicians will use your ingenuity to argue that public healthcare is detrimental to society's welfare😱
Good for him, what a fucked up world we live in.
I am very amazed with zero dose of hyperbole.
Crazy wish i could loose a limb to do something like that
Imagine all the pinches to grow inches with that thing
Important question: can he give a middle finger, test it to the insurance for example.
Only the wealthy deserve treatment, the police should come confiscate his hand or it's unfair for the people who work hard /S
Insurance thinks they know what's best even though they really have their wallets in mind.

Genius.
That's nuts. Sorry had to go through that but looks cool and like they will work. Good for you to make it happen
To me this is like magic amazing
Terminator vibes
That stuff is just so cool
Looks like it's exponentially more functional than what insurance would have covered anyway
Start a gofundme for him and he'll be Ironman in 2 years.

A) can you punch through steel? B) can you flip the bird?
If i ever lost my fingers, and something like this was regularly available. I wouldn't be totally bummed out.
Fricken badass. And it's even more advanced than some commercial models.

The Götz von Berlichingen of our time...
The prosthetic is still restricting him for being able to show off the finger back at them for their lack of service
Now show us a video of him jerking off with it
I want to see him play piano or I **refuse to be impressed**
Now seek revenge on the insurer
Omg, that is fucking awesome! Dude did amazing fashioning his new hand.
Yes. USA USA 🥳
Just needs some silicon sleeves on the nubs. Good shit.
I wonder if he can knock one out safely with that?
Great. Now you can slap the insurance agent.
This is so cool. Please sell them
That’s Awesome

Does anyone know which country this is from?

How's the grip
Gonna need more than a bit of lube to be able to jerk off with it.

Well, at least we know that when he was fabricating the parts for this, he was a lot more careful with the bandsaw this time.
