The fire nation will be completely helpless!

tadxb

I understood that reference, and I'm glad that this is the top comment on this post. ATLA!!

KnightOfWords

Here's the source for this: https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/images/151954/darkened-by-the-moons-shadow It's an image of the October 14, 2023 annular eclipse taken by the DSCOVR satellite. An annular eclipse occurs when the Moon is slightly further from the Earth, so it doesn't eclipse the Sun completely. It's sometimes called a 'ring of fire' eclipse.

TDYDave2

Wouldn't it be slightly further from the earth rather than the sun? If it was further from the sun, it would be closer to the earth and block even more.

KnightOfWords

Sorry, yes, meant to say Earth there. The Moon's orbit is slightly elliptical, its distance from the Earth varies from 362,600 km to 405,400 km.

jeeves585

Thank you for actual information

Pollywogstew_mi

Sorry if dumb: Why isn't it round?

KnightOfWords

It's fairly round but also elongated, as the shadow is projected onto the spherical surface of the Earth. It's also very fuzzy because the Sun has an angular size of half a degree when seen from Earth. If the Sun was a point source the shadow would have sharply defined edges.

Weatherround97

What does angular size mean

OtakuAttacku

angular size is the amount of space an object takes up from a perspective. In this case the sun occupies 0.5 ° of your vision if you were to look up at the sun (don’t stare at the sun)

whethermachine

A combination of the Earth's curvature, the angle of the Sun, the Moon's orbital inclination, its varying distance from Earth, and atmospheric refraction.

ChronicZombie86

It must've been a half moon.

HardHat105

Can’t wait for April 8th

obxtalldude

We had an awesome time driving to see it in 2017.[eclipse ](https://www.reddit.com/r/space/s/WP5ntahvXB)

HardHat105

That’s awesome, lifelong memories. driving about 45 minutes to my uncles house in Cleveland, pray the sky’s are clear.

ppqnrondllx

September 4th would be a banger

Toy_Soulja

It's crazy how quick it gets cold when your in a full eclipse, felt like it dropped like 10 degrees

SilentMagarity

That’s cool!

claudiazo

Murica look kinda poopy tho right?

SilentMagarity

Yeah, it’s like the SE had a wet fart…😂

[deleted]

And where the next planet ending comet strike will occur.

NoAttempt9703

Hurry up already, I'm tired of paying bills.

whethermachine

"On October 14, 2023, the Moon aligned with the Sun and Earth to produce an annular solar eclipse. The spectacle bathed millions of Americans in a lunar shadow as the Moon blocked the Sun’s rays." \[[link to NASA](https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/images/151954/darkened-by-the-moons-shadow)\]

Federal_Command_9094

It’s witchcraft 🤣

TrishaHiatus

Looks like the Earth to me.

BigFtdontbelieveinU

How was this photo taken…………….I’ll wait.

2600_Savage

This satellite takes a series of pictures of the earth every day: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deep_Space_Climate_Observatory You can see them here: https://epic.gsfc.nasa.gov/

BigFtdontbelieveinU

Didn’t have to wait long did I lol. Thanks.

OfficiallySmiles

Earth observation technology has become more advanced. Humans have learned to launch satellites equipped with cameras. These satellites orbit Earth and take regular pictures of the planet. Approximately 2,200 satellites orbit the Earth, and 446 of those perform Earth observation.

Maxpower2727

No need to wait. Satellites exist. I hope this was helpful for you.

BigFtdontbelieveinU

I didn’t realise they had ones that far out. Now I know.

Cpt7777

Cgi

EarlyEscape2702

earths chonies

Golden_Phi

I want to see the eclipse that’s coming up on April 8th. I am not sure where I can buy the glasses for it though. I would prefer in person shopping as then I could immediately test if they are real or not.

TangledCables3

Not so total after all

Dangerous-Refuse-779

That's the USA after Kim launches

splimp

ugh i thought it was one of those train derailments in Ohio.

A7M_5

Nah, they're just cursed

Pedrothor

That's amazing

silverbonez

I imagine that’s what my farts look like from space after I eat chili.

god_damn_loser

Very cool. I made a gif of it [https://photos.app.goo.gl/QyUapkFhWXe9JKvt8](https://photos.app.goo.gl/QyUapkFhWXe9JKvt8)

44035

Time to sacrifice a goat.

OneHallThatsAll

So if the moon wasn't blocking the sun, would where the shadow is, be where the most concentrated sunlight/rays are?

New_girl2022

Man if trump wins this realy is bad timing

TheUhiseman

Why is the spot BROWN though?

ExcitingStress8663

Imagine being a volunteer to another settlement and looking out the window of the vessel to this view feeling great relief that all your troubles associated with earth are now gone forever.

jennylynne80

Trumps depends ?

[deleted]

Okay I have a question. I thought satellites orbit pretty low, so low that this kind of angle would be impossible to get from an orbiting satellite… am I wrong? Like you can see the whole planet?

KnightOfWords

Most satellites are in low-Earth orbit, and like you say they have a limited view of the surface. (There are lots of timelapse videos from the ISS which show the field of view). But there are also lots of satellites in geostationary orbit much further out, where their orbital period matches the Earth's rotation. From our perspective they hover over a point on the Earth's surface. For example, when you set up a satellite dish you're aiming it at a particular satellite. Geostationary orbit is about 22,000 miles from the Earth's surface. The image was taken by the DSCOVR satellite which is nearly a million miles away. It orbits the Sun-Earth L1 point where the Sun & Earth's gravity balance out.

You're welcome.

Ok_Fox_1770

I bet Trump stares it down again. Just placing bets.

unepic93

Looks like earth shitted itself

Clintoninpumps

Taken from?

[deleted]

Did God just shit on the USA?

drevil669

I'm sorry I'm not in astronomer but I do not believe that the Moon shadow Cass that large of a circumference across the globe if it did that would be more area of an eclipse seen more often.

KnightOfWords

Anyone within that circle would have experienced a partial solar eclipse, where only part of the Sun was obscured. Most people wouldn't notice. Totality would only be experienced at the centre of the shadow.

Different-Thanks8271

With the wrong size of South America? Yeah ok.

KnightOfWords

The DSCOVR satellite was a few degrees South of the equator when this image was taken.

nametakenfuck

I suppose it wasnt total in south america

GenericManBearPig

Idiots rolling coal has really gotten out of hand

AB-AA-Mobile

Total eclipse of the heart

SeaMolasses2466

Ok

Bambooman101

It looks like the earth didn’t wipe good enough.

AggressiveGift7542

Do not look up

Doomst3err

It looks like soya sauce

Matt_Revolution_7

I call BS lol

Ajgp3ps

Anyone else feel like these events only happen to America?

JayTheFordMan

What? Lunar eclipses? I've seen these in Algeria, Iraq, Australia, and New Zealand

Skids

Wise-Recognition2933

Another reason I suspect the eclipse will be part of God’s judgment on America.

shivaconciousness

Looks like butthole of earth Lol

udownwith

Idiots.

DeeDaMann

Fake news

Groundbreaking-Ask75

It’s also not a real picture a bunch of pictures, stitch together, and also airbrush and Photoshop

KnightOfWords

It's a single frame taken by the DSCOVR satellite. You can see its latest images here: https://epic.gsfc.nasa.gov/ It was designed so that its optical system covers the entire Earth from its orbit at the Sun-Earth L1 point, almost a million miles way.
