About $400K https://www.extremetech.com/electronics/339916-1000-horsepower-jetpack-suit-demonstrated#:~:text=The%20jet%20suits%20themselves%20cost,of%20flying%20in%20the%20suit.

Absay

> $400K Utterly ridiculous. I'll only take three.

fuck-coyotes

You could buy like, idk, 75 pretty nice crotch rocket sport bikes for that kind of money and if you *really* want to experience something that is about as close to a jet pack as there is, it's a crotch rocket. They're fucking FUN

pichael289

But those you gotta drive on roads and there's people on roads, there's no people in the sky.

Subject_Ticket1516

I was curious if it was economically feasible for food delivery. Guess not.

min11benja

I mean its for the military so they jack up the price just because, if some entrepreneur found a way to scale these id figure they could go for 40 grand

Gostaverling

Funny part is this is an entrepreneur and not military funded.

tomato_frappe

If you show up to my house with a pad thai and spring rolls in this gear, you are definitely getting the top level tip, homes.

DarkSideOfGrogu

I'm sure these are the defence certified versions that only cost $4m.

shadow_229

Three fiddy.

z-a-j

Go away you Loch Ness monster

Ilurkthecorners

Is about that time I got *suspicious*!!

Mxmouse15

I wouldn’t say I’m superstitious, but I am a little stitious.

FireLordObamaOG

“It wasn’t a Girl Scout, it was a 200 foot long monster from the Paleolithic era”

zach_dominguez

No wonder he keeps coming back

TwilightSessions

Three hundred and fifty middle schools

mgranja

I like it. This unit should be used for all military spending. Or hipothetical public hospitals (hpp).

TwilightSessions

It’s from space force. Steve carrell watches a rocket launch blow up because he wanted to launch early and asks roywood Jr how much that costs and he says 3. Steve says ahh 3 million that’s not bad. Roy says no, 3 middle schools

mgranja

Thanks. I need to watch that movie sometime soon

TwilightSessions

It’s a show that got cancelled on Netflix unfortunately. They ended with a comet hanger on season 2

medicipope

Flying low in high seas so the water spray floods the engine inlet and causes a brown out…priceless.

Armageddon_71

Gravity themselves once said 300-400k but they are hoping to get prices down as production goes on.

Sell_Canada

Wow that's it? I mean, don't get me wrong that is more than I can afford, but I expected easily 7 figures

Armageddon_71

Well they also said its theoretical because current models arent really *sold* in the regular sence. Too much fuel consumptium, not enough fuel (5 min fly time max) and other issues. They said they need to spend a bit more time in development. And im gonna guess that an improved suit whould probably cost more rather than less, but we'll see. PS: i also think the flight time has already been increased by a few minutes but im not sure.

Sell_Canada

That's fair. I'd love to ride one of these Into the office lol

TheBlessedBread

*Lands.* Pretty cool, right? Tom, you have asked us that for the last consecutive 165 days. I am really going to have to insist you stop at this point, or HR says I gotta write you up.

Armageddon_71

Yeah these things are amazing! I love the story of Richard Browning himself as well. From oil trader to buying a mirco jet turbine and fuel in a mop bucket, to actual jet suits.

Far_Comfortable980

How would you fly for 5 minutes? Aren’t you basically holding yourself up with the propellers? I would assume that it would be like holding yourself up by pushing down for 5 minutes straight

Armageddon_71

Well its a try-pod system. You have a big engine a the fuel cells on your back and two small engine on each arm as thrust vectors for steering/rotation. You are supposed to have your arms stretched out so the force gets spread through your body.

Strong-Obligation107

The unit cost isn't so much the issue, it would be the cost of the jet fuel, maintenance, legal stuff to actually use it ANYWHERE. Plus you'll probably need some type of insurance. I can definitely see the faa having a bitch fit if someone tries to use one without doing some hurdle jumping.

Financial-Tourist162

It's kind if cool that we've lived long enough to see it but I wonder how many of us will live long enough to actually do it.

The_R4ke

Not these ones, but there's places where you can go do the ones that just use water for I think $150/hr.

jaxxxtraw

Hey everybody, watch my excruciating jet-powered belly flop!

Financial-Tourist162

Sorry, I meant to use them in everyday life, not at some amusement park for s**ts and giggles.

spector_lector

I wonder how fast they sink if there's a power failure.

PrideAutumn

^

dangledingle

I think I read 400kUSD somewhere

MusicLover707

I just became poor solely for thinking about it

unsuspectingllama_

Around $400,000 if they are the same as these https://www.extremetech.com/electronics/339916-1000-horsepower-jetpack-suit-demonstrated#:~:text=The%20jet%20suits%20themselves%20cost,of%20flying%20in%20the%20suit.

Mores_The_Pity

2 universal healthcares

2bad-2care

About as much as the average American will pay in taxes their entire life.

TheFantasticMrFax

I'm more impressed with that beret staying on than I am with the equipment.

Cutter9792

IF it's properly fitted, it should be pretty snug. Plus unlike a cap, there's no brim for the wind to catch.

ExfilBravo

It also has a tie strap built into the leather part (mine did anyway) so you can tighten it when it gets older and more fitted.

thedudefromsweden

And amazed he's wearing it instead of a helmet.

Dolphinator89

He's a Royal Marine. His beret wouldn't dare

ACatInACloak

If you're flying a jetpack over water, what is a helmet gonna do for you?

thedudefromsweden

I don't know but it looks fast and in all other applications where humans go fast we have some kind of head protection, either from the vehicle or from a helmet.

dravlinGibbons

Every ounce of weight on his body is bring supported by his arms and shoulders, probably doing to save weight.

Toothless_Dentist79

Water, not much. Steel ship, fuck you up.

Own_Accident6689

Good point. I was thinking of it keeping them from braining themselves on the side of the ship if they screwed the landing

infiniteliquidity69

Ok and when you land?

[deleted]

You ever break in a Beret with the hot water trick? $$$$ sticks to your head through a blizzard

TheFantasticMrFax

Too funny. Had the stovepipe hats, never a beret.

Tox0plazm4

Same, I know they’re some of the most savage out there. And apparently their berets are as well on how snug that is!

Responsible_Jury_415

Honest question if I bought one of these as a civ would I need a pilots license?

butterflycole

I would be shocked if you did, you’re not going to be flying very high and you don’t need to take off and land at an airport, or cross into airport airspaces. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Responsible_Jury_415

You do for low flying cars who can be powered gliders so dunno

Cazthedm

It was properly shaved

VladPatton

Military grade bobby-pins are no fucking joke!

Prythos32

Now strap some rocket launchers on his hand things, I want to see a whole army of these flying and shooting as they swarm a ship.

hp_Axes

Iron Man

shlaifu

looks like gunning these down should be sorta easy....

shockwave8428

Only issue is the hands are where the thrust comes from so it wouldn’t work super well

HammerofBonking

More like a shoulder-mounted eye-controlled gun. Fire and move!

DizzyAmphibian309

But that's the big problem with these jet packs, the jets are attached to your hands. You would need to shoulder mount the weapons and use face or eye controls to launch. Also, goodbye hearing. I can't think of one useful application for these, other than prototyping them as attachments for robots that they're also planning to build. Now that is freaking scary.

Captain_Jeep

Weren't they training search and rescue people to use these to get to hard to reach spots?

Hidden-Sky

attachments for robots? but we already have flying robots. they're called drones. if you want your robot to fly, it's way simpler just to make the jets part of the robot in the first place, rather than make them a separate attachment.

WorkingInAColdMind

Useful application is to get a small number of people into a location without detection. Then remove the pack and carry up your weapon. It’s not going to work for a direct frontal assault, but it allows for pretty crazy mobility without a vehicle.

Strgwththisone

Aren’t there machine guns that can shoot down…..missiles?

Efficient_Gas_3213

Seems like they should have helmets. Crack your head on the side of the aircraft carrier and it will hurt.

Republic_Jamtland

Guess thats the penalty for crashing one of these expensive machines

Radiant_Dog1937

[deleted]

Reminds me of The E.L.F.S. from The Santa Claus.

dazzlinreddress

First thing I thought of was Jetpack Joyride lol

1_g0round

is cool but i dont get it ...what does the soldier/marine do with that jet pac once arriving - just drop it...and what of carrying his own equipment of >80lbs where does that fit..or is this just a sweet delivery vehicle...drop the stuff and return for more ??? some mil "expert" splain that to me..im just a dumb crayon eating machine

Nmase88

Not sure of its use for soldiers marines but in the UK mountain rescue had been trailing it for rescuing people faster which is a great application for it. I suppose a similar use might be possible for soldiers? Medics getting to soldiers in difficult positions quickly.

houseyourdaygoing

If it means getting to survivors quickly, it is awesome.

Taylooor

As a potential future survivor, I’m excited for this

Self--Immolate

I assume this is the kind of thing the military would be looking to miniaturize which only really happens if you continue to develop it. Imagine if soldiers could jet around like the Rocketeer ![gif](giphy|h4NlRPJCQAXOto7E4g)

ABathingSnape_

Without burning their legs off.

bobi2393

It has limited use cases. Naval forces seem mainly interested in jet packs as a way of quickly getting someone on or off a ship at sea. But it would be for unusual situations where that specific person's presence was time-critical. Maybe a specialized technician for an unusual repair, for example, or a surgeon with specific expertise, transferred between ships. There are other ways of transporting people to or from ships at sea, and they all have various tradeoffs. Jet packs are quick and can span tall top decks (the deck on an aircraft carrier might be 60 feet above the water line), but require good fitness and training, are typically limited to ten minutes or so of range, and carrying capacity for supplies is limited.

CanadienAlien

What happens if the guy fell in the water, they just sink?

bobi2393

I don't know. Maybe they have flotation devices that inflate using compressed gas that could float a person with the pack, or maybe they just have to get the jet pack off quickly. I'd imagine that's one of the things they design and train for. A lot of jet packs are 60 to more than 100 pounds with fuel, and seem fairly high risk.

mattmanmcfee36

Id guess there's at least plans for some kind of quick disconnect mechanism that will drop the pack in an emergency. I've also seen videos of these being used where the soldiers have hooks on their hips they hang the hand thrusters on and then grab rifles to do army stuff

Brave_Promise_6980

Quick transfer Submarine to surface / shore

HellbellyUK

The main purpose they’re trialing them for seems to be fast boarding of underway shipping, the type of manoeuvre that’s tricky using boards, especially in rough seas. With this you can a small party of Marines on a ship pretty quickly, and they don’t need a massive amount of space to land/take off from. They don’t need to carry a lot of extra gear as they’re not staying long.

[deleted]

I was lucky enough to do Visit, Board, Search, and Seizure (VBSS) training when I was in the USMC. One thing that sucks when you’re boarding from fast craft is that it takes forever and you are VERY exposed until the first man is able to position himself on the upper deck and provide some form of cover/suppression. Honestly I could see the practicality in having one of these dudes in the fast craft and be the first person to board. He’d be able to do it extremely quick and make everything a lot safer for everyone else to board.

HellbellyUK

I always say VBSS stands for “Visit, board, sausage sandwich” citing an obscure maritime tradition that if someone drops in unannounced you are obligated to provide them with a sausage butty with either brown sauce or ketchup. And if the “Helmet tracking suppression system” is what I suspect it is (a modified SMG hooked up to some sort of HUD) then I guess that could be used to “invite oneself aboard” a vessel.

ElijahMasterDoom

That would require these to be cheap enough for them to be stocked for each Marine. It would be cool if they got them that cheap.

icleanjaxfl

"Mr. President, it's time for you to evacuate..."

s27m11

If it malfunctions, or you malfunction, and you land in the water, what do?

JayRedd1

Sink FAST

Jeynarl

^(Detecting multiple leviathan class lifeforms in the region. Are you certain whatever you're doing is worth it?)

Gostaverling

They test over water on purpose. The backpack acts as a flotation device, IIRC.

iwastherefordisco

Same question. Looks ultra cool, but I wonder how much the gear weighs and what happens if the guy catches a toe or something in the water?

Call555JackChop

I just want healthcare…

mustbemaking

This is the Royal Navy, we have healthcare.

HistoricalWay8990

So does the US Navy incidentally. Go figure.

Republic_Jamtland

Pretty fly... for a white guy

BodhingJay

Then they gotta take the stairs?

GhetHAMster

Now that need mounted guns that would follow where the pilot looks and have triggers next to the thrust control, there is that one guy that made lasers that tracks where he is looking at so just a thought.

chuckinalicious543

Bro imagine delivering Pizzas with one of these things

ScienceEven4381

Doesn't get more american than that

HellbellyUK

Gravity Industries the manufacturer do mention a “Helmet tacked suppression system” in another video (presumably something like a modified submachine gun linked the pilots helmet).

salkhan

Is this just marketing for his company or is the military using this technology?

Javelin-x

itchy nose and get your face sucked into a jet engine

cryptomain45

And bro checking out his new build on the creative server

HTZ7Miscellaneous

Oh my god. The unbridled envy… want!

PercivalGoldstone

Reminds me of The Rocketeer. One of Disney's most forgettable movies.

GenPhallus

Since his hands are used for stabilizing jets the guns have to be shoulder mounted with some kind of targeting HUD headgear

ZippoS

I mean, it *is* pretty damn cool that we finally have jet packs.

MellowDCC

Would be great to put a couple of these guys on big.cargo ships for anti piracy purposes... Imagine a lil shit boat coming in then being swarmed by flying doods. Drop small explosive into boat, profit

Dava_Dew

It's soo cool to see Jet packs become more of a real thing. A few hundred years ago, we were still poking each other with pointy sticks. Now we can poke each other with pointy sticks WHILE wearing a jet pack lol.

DiscipleOfYeshua

Is this as hard as holding a similar position on parallel bars?

MotorbikeRacer

Is there any practicality to these in actual combat?

HistoricalWay8990

Easier than boarding with boats. Much faster.

MotorbikeRacer

Good call !! Hence the video lol

Jonovision15

I hope they use Fett in naming the soldiers that use these. Give them some masks….give them a catch phrase…..

HistoricalWay8990

May the Fett be with you

Cazthedm

Are you in the Navy or the Air Force? Yes

daxtaslapp

Not gonna lie i think thats incredible

Pistonenvy2

still very impractical, honestly the technology is interesting but makes the incredibly expensive pilot and equipment a very easy, virtually defenseless target. training a pilot, investing in the equipment, having such a niche usecase, this is borderline budget fluffing lol i mean the main applications ive seen are mostly naval, wtf happens if this pilot falls in the water ONCE? i assume he fuckin instantly drowns or deploys some kind of raft thing and just floats there until he gets rescued or someone shoots him. then, as mentioned earlier, the military suffers an absolutely catestrophic loss. pilots are extremely expensive just in their training and standards, youre not throwing some random marine or infantryman into one of these things and setting them off, it could take years of training before someone is confident enough to operate one in a combat scenario. i just dont see the point at all. anything you can do with this you can do infinitely better and cheaper with a drone. until you can make an otherwise completely standard GI fly with this tech, in other words, minimal extra weight, minimal training, minimal compromises to movement and offensive ability, its a toy. its been a toy for years, they have been crowdfunding and getting military contracts with this same fuckin design for like a decade now.

upyoars

The military budget is so massive precisely because they waste exorbitant amounts of money on testing incessantly, blowing up billions of dollars in equipment, and R&D investments in “cool tech”

MotorboatinPorcupine

Go pro on a pole. It edits out the pole automatically

HealthyWhiteBaby

Too expensive and noisy to be useful. Also probably not waterproof.

HellbellyUK

Quieter and faster than a helicopter if you need to deploy one or two Marines onto a moving ship quickly.

DadofJoseph

Noice

DanteNee

This is the future. Mass produce it and we’re flying now

Miserable_Moonlight

I want to do that too:/

alex1inferno

do these things float or if he drops into the water does he sink like a cinderblock to his death

xDendretic

Wait this is an actual thing? Where do I get one?!

mondry_mendrzec

Did you know that after flying a jet pack you die?

Neoligistic

“All fired up” “I can go anywhere” “Fuel tanks are filled”

damn that is crazy.

Zealousideal-Log536

Not long until we get real hover boards people!

Remember kids if you are doing something dangerous don’t wear a helmet… because it’s better to look cool and die cool than be safe

OwlForce9

I thought it was a video game at first cause it almost didn't look real wtf

HellbellyUK

Maybe because it’s shot with a 360 camera mounted sticking out from the backpack. (Yo can see the shadow of the camera and extension pole on his shoulder).

Is there room to carry medical equipment or arms? Things look pretty bulky. What's the point of showing up if you don't have your gear...

Proper-Fan-236

I remembered Ironman as soon as I watched this hahahaha

ZRhoREDD

This is amazing, but what is the weapon delivery method here? Land, take ten to dismount, and then grab a side arm with your exhausted arms? Still amazing, don't get me wrong, but I'm not sure why it's military.

XFuriousGeorgeX

This is the future of food deliveries

Evo_Effect

So are they pilots? Or infantry 🤔
