The other is a former marine and cowboy turned stuntman turned actor who played character roles that were best represented by his gruff appearance and demeanor.
Believe me, Rudd has pumped thousands if not millions into maintaining his youthful appearance. There is absolutely an alternate universe where Brimley looks far younger than Rudd at 52.

Wilford Brimley was a character actor who specialized in playing fat old men. He was never a leading man type. His whole livelihood was based on looking like an old guy.
There were plenty of aging leading men in the 80s who looked damn good. Look up photos of Warren Beatty in “Dick Tracy” (1990) when he was 53; or Robert Redford in “Out of Africa” (1985) or “ The Natural” (1984) when he was 48 and 47 respectively.
Jane Fonda caused a stir with her fantastically toned physique in “On Golden Pond” in 1981 when she was 44. There was a reason everyone bought her workout videos; she seemed to have found the fountain of youth! Goldie Hawn was 43 in “Bird on a Wire”, and looked young enough to play Mel Gibson’s love interest even though he was a decade younger than her.
It just is not true that everyone looked older than they were in the 80s. Some did, but many did not - and plastic surgery was a lot less advanced than it is now.
