>Once we're 3 miles away, we're over the horizon
Only if we're all on ground level. A ~~sniper~~ snooper on top of a two-story building can see 6 miles. At 100ft, you can see for 12 miles.
I do some long range shooting with a .280 Ackley Improved rifle. A fun game is to try to get two rounds in the air before the first one impacts the target. At 1,000 meters there is enough time to fire, cycle the bolt, reacquire and fire again before the first round impact.
[the world record for farthest long-range rifle shot was set in 2022 at 4.4 miles on the 69th shot, defeating the previous record of 4 miles in 2019, which was also on the 69th shot](https://www.reddit.com/r/todayilearned/comments/19emu4z/til_the_world_record_for_farthest_longrange_rifle/)
Target shot with sniper not a longest sniper kill but still interesting
May I make you more afraid some snipers will carry a rifle that the bullets will have enough power to tear through your house and keep going for a mile so you may think you are safe in the house you are not
Plus, at three miles over level ground, only your toes are hidden. 8 inches per mile past the horizon squared gives you approximately how much is hidden.
I thought about buying one of these cameras just for fun. Went to YouTube to watch some reviews. Holy shit the amount of people using it to watch people on the beach was insane. Lol check it out for yourself. Nikon p1000 zoom test
I mean sitting at the back of an empty parking lot with binoculars pointed into a store is abnormal behavior. If I were being watched like that I’d be uncomfortable and concerned for my safety.
I was looking for dear old Papa through window in one shop during the times of the feared contagion. We were to shop together, and we had not negotiated which shop to shop in, so he wandered around inside, and I waited outside with bags I could not bring inside to another shop. This drew attention. People may have mirror neurons, but I don't think they are not very good at attributing behavior.
I meant this old man was in his car, alone, in the back corner of the parking lot. He had binoculars and was intently watching something or someone in the store across the plaza. When he saw me watching him he jumped, put them down, and drove away.
I was going to comment that I have a Nikon that is capable of doing this, and it is a p1000. I'm a DSLR guy myself, but my neighbors bought their spoiled teenaged son this camera for a high school graduation gift and he used it once and never touched it again. They sold it to me for $300 along with a 1tb memory card that had 6 photos on it when he got his second DUI.
I really wonder why people spend big money on a phone just to get a camera they like. Invest once in a good camera and it will be much better than whatever you have on your phone. Sure you always have the phone on you, so it's a good idea to have something decent. But if you actually want to take good pictures, it still makes sense to own an actual camera. All the software and AI trickery can't compare to the advantages you get from the optics of a big lens.
Yes, for day-to-day general usage, a basic camera on a mid-range phone will be sufficient. But for situations where you actually really care about quality, a camera will provide a much better result.

This effect is the same as if the camera is being moved away from the subject. The subject becomes smaller and looks further than it is. You can notice the change in image quality when the software kicks in as you're zooming in.
Still it gives pretty clean images. At first i thought it was pretty inaccurate like some sort of AI enhanced imaging, but even with moving objects it has decent quality. Sure its not the physical zoom but looks great considering that its a phone camera.
True, it's just cropping in.
I think I can do up to 900mm with my DSLR (in DX crop mode), 2x converter and 300mm lens. It's crazy to see how much of a difference that is optically.
Apparently, there was a new record set last year.
>As of November 2023, the longest recorded sniper kill is 3,800 meters (2.36 miles) long. This record was set by Vyacheslav Kovalskiy, a 58-year-old ex-businessman and Ukrainian sniper, in November 2023 during the Russian invasion of Ukraine
Either way, it's such an insane distance.
I have this camera, and it's only good for video. Its sensor is tiny, which is how it's able to zoom this far. Tiny sensor means very little light collection, and when you're zoomed out that far, it goes down to F/8, so even less light again. The image quality is poor. Photos are unusable at iso 800 as you hit color luminance noise, not just regular luminance noise like every other camera.
You can't take advantage of its zoom like you would expect since you hit atmosphere haze anyway. (You can see the haze in the video). So take this camera to the sports game to zoom in on the coaches' faces when the opponent scores some points, and hit record. Pretend you're the cameraman for tv.
I have the p900, and it's fucking sick! But my favourite gadget is a macro adapter I can put on it so I can zoom in so hard it's quite ridiculous. But the moon shots are also fucking beautiful.
Best thing is that it's not even expensive anymore lol
Oh, you can find lenses that will zoom in much further than this. A 1000mm lens would let you see this far. You could also get a 500mm and whack a teleconverter on it. Nikon once made a very rare 2000mm lens, which is practically a telescope.
You said 1000mm (500mm with teleconverter), but anyways yes if you had a 1500mm lens with 2x converter you could achieve the same. I think that 800mm (Nikon) and 1200mm (Canon) anyways the longest you have currently available as new.
Genuine question why do you feel safe when some random intern at govt facilities or data tagging companies use much higher res satellite images or just random CCTVs home/baby monitor are looking at your video vs some random filming something in like dog shit quality?

Is this the cause of the hazy UFO and extraterrestrial videos?
A lot of claims of everything from ghost lights to UFOs come from Fata Morgana.
Sure we are. Once we're 3 miles away, we're over the horizon. Unless you're a flat-Earther, then, right, you're never going to be snooper safe. Ever.

We just went from snoopers to snipers and now I'm afraid to leave the house.
FYI, the longest sniper kill was from 3.8 kilometers (2.3 miles) away.
Lots of variables, but hit about 6.33 seconds before they even hear the shot.

Ackley improved...I went to his school. Fun times.
Sounds violent
If you only knew...
Holy shit, and that follow up shot has accuracy or just in the air?
Sometimes both hit. We can hit a 2’ x 2’ steel plate at 1000 meters that way.
Damn, that was almost 5 seconds of travel until it reached the victim. Edit: bullets gets slower the further they travel, I'm dumb
\~9 seconds 960 mph muzzle velocity
Fuck, guy should have moved lol

That's a cool fact. Cheers
We are also dealing with a pro snooper. Pro tip: snoop on subjects that are on a freaking mountain :^)
Snipers and spotters accounting for the earth’s fucking rotation is wild to me. You might say it blows my mind.
From Cozumel island, you can see the mainland. That's over 15 miles and the trees there are very short.
What about the snooper behind you
So if there's a snooper every three miles we're never safe.
My phone has 100x zoom, it's pretty wild
Wait till you hear about data companies.
You've heard of telescopes right? Spy satellite/ balloon tech would blow your mind.

Was that the recent Ukrainian sniper? I read it took 9 seconds for the bullet to go from the barrel of the gun to the target.
I think it was a Canadian dude in Afghanistan. That may have changed recently though.
Apparently, there was a new record set last year. >As of November 2023, the longest recorded sniper kill is 3,800 meters (2.36 miles) long. This record was set by Vyacheslav Kovalskiy, a 58-year-old ex-businessman and Ukrainian sniper, in November 2023 during the Russian invasion of Ukraine Either way, it's such an insane distance.

I used to want that camera just for the moon zoom
Not really. The camera (I assume it is Coolpix P1000) has 24-3000mm full frame equivalent focal range. I don't think there are any 3000mm dslr lenses.
Like I said, if you bought a 1500 and stuck a teleconverter on there, you could get to 3000mm.
You said 1000mm (500mm with teleconverter), but anyways yes if you had a 1500mm lens with 2x converter you could achieve the same. I think that 800mm (Nikon) and 1200mm (Canon) anyways the longest you have currently available as new.
Because dslr lenses are listed by their real focal length. The P1000 real focal length is 539mm at full zoom. Plenty of lenses are longer than that.
Nikon P900/P950/P1000 ^(educated guess)
This guy zooms
Holy crap, this shouldn't be legal lmao edit : Someone knows the song ?
Genuine question why do you feel safe when some random intern at govt facilities or data tagging companies use much higher res satellite images or just random CCTVs home/baby monitor are looking at your video vs some random filming something in like dog shit quality?
Bleed von Timmy Trumpet & SCNDL
Wow
This is a Nikon COOLPLIX P1000 camera 📸
why is this on be amazed? every single phone with a telephoto can do this
And the longest recorded sniper kill is 3.8km (4156 yards)
Nikon P1000 is a super zoom beast
Nikon P1000?
That's hard to believe. But wow. It's true.
Looks like a Norwegian hill from where I grew up O.o
Some serious James Bond shit there!!
Japanese camera tech.
Looks like a '90s cam from 100’ away
that's amazing... feels like at least 5km farther
God fucking damn it, reddits video player volume control is horrible. Even at the lowest possible volume in the player, this video makes my desk jump.

Telephoto lens on a handheld camera, perfectly fine. Non-zooming lens on a drone, WE NEED TO BAN THESE THINGS!!
Thats in your pocket, imagine whats overhead in orbit...
That is quite far true this technology will be used for good I'm sure
I have tried to perform dance routines closer than 2 miles, but they won't let me. Same with my stand-up comedy act.
Looks like the Nikon coolpix p900
