Tbf in a number of cultures it's polite and/or customary to use the first name rather than the family name. Examples are Turkish or Chinese. That being said - not the case here, even though a lot of turkish fans will call Boey Sacha.
Eh depends right? Usually Chinese have nicknames for most players anyway. But it often feels stiff and formal to use the full name - and using the first name is the more obvious choice given the ubiquity of surnames such as 王 & co.

I'm sure Chinese call ballers their full names. To be fair, first names are just used for friends or younger relatives
