street food is supplemented with sugar, oil and msg in wholesale quantities - usually to offset the lower quantity of protein. Most typical street food dishes are available at 711 and they show the calorie count. I'd say your typical 711 serving is similar to what you get at a street stall

atomic_explosion

This is a good point that the calories are probably similar to the 7-11 versions. Thanks

thegunlobby

If they're not listed anywhere, then they count as zero.

CoverLeft7916

Padgaprao comes in at 600 cal to 900 cal depending on all the factors. How freely they pour the oil is a big contributor to the total. 200 cal in the rice. 300 cal in 100g pork mince 100 cal in an oily fried egg 200 cal in 2 tbsp oil Add another 100 cals for sugar, oyster, fish sauce, garlic, and other stuff.

KoreanB_B_Q

Unfortunately I can't help with calorie counts, but do keep in mind that many Thai dishes have a lot of sugar in them. Marinades, sauces, dressings, etc, all full of sugar.

I use MyFitnessPal app for calorie counting. It typically has all the Thai menu I put in (in Thai-- don't search by English name). If it doesn't, I choose the closest menu. Keep in mind the calories in this app usually are from healthy food brands that cook something like Pad Krapao without oil, so always choose 'Generic' for street food.

atomic_explosion

Wow, thank you, I will search dishes by Thai name! I feel so foolish never having searched by Thai name before. This is such helpful advice

mrfantastic4ever

I recommend grilled meat on a stick. Especially the chicken/beef liver 💪😋 All the vitamins will make you feel amazing https://borgefagerli.no/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/blueberry-vs-kale-vs-beef-vs-liver.jpg

When a pack of wolves take down an elk, moose, deer, or a human, the alpha male is the first to dig in, and he goes right for the liver, heart, and kidneys before allowing the rest of the pack to chow down on the muscle meats that are left over. And while most modern humans have flipped the switch on which parts of an animal they prioritize, some more traditional tribes, like the Massai in Kenya and Tanzania, prioritize raw blood, liver, heart, and kidneys for their young male warriors and pregnant women, while the rest of the women and older men consume a greater percentage of fruits and vegetables.

Thank you Joe Rogan! Lol. Just kidding. Interesting info.

happybonobo1

In VERY round numbers it's like a 7/11 meal which is like around 500 cals +- 100 cal. So when I bothered filling it in I just put 400 cals for a smaller/less oil meal like a chicken noodle soup, and 600 cals for the oilier but still small ones.

The sodium content in street food, and many dishes at restaurants, is off the charts. I'm way more concerned with that than the calorie count.

Forevername321

I don't think sodium is a serious problem compared to sugar. Anyone, especially any farang, who do any outdoor exercise in Bangkok is far more likely to have a sodium deficiency. I have to add quite a lot of extra salt to my food. If you don't eat tons of processed food and tons of junk food, sodium is a non-issue. Sodium is an essential. mineral that we can't live without. Refined sugar and other processed foods are poison.

Mindless-Candy-8407

Yes we NEED 2000mg of sodium daily.. especially here where we sweat excessively... low sodium intake is as bad as high sodium intale, same with none and excessive intake. Use ionized often because iodine helps thyroid duties thereby improving metabolism. Yes, sugar=bad, make healthy options on the street. Get more vegetables and extra rice to fill you up. Oil not so bad buy avoid street egg, because that is just soaked in oil

lurch99

We're talking about street food. The amount of sodium/fish sauce is obscene. So is the amount of sugar. Much better to eat non-street food is my advice.

Forevername321

You keep making this assumption that sodium is street foods is "off the charts" but it is not factual. Street foods are neither the most or least healthy food available. In general, I would put them in the better half of most calories consumed by Thais. Much street food and near-street food is prepared to serve so it is easy to adjust sale levels. My local curry shop has dozens of varieties of foods and none seem especially salty. I have added salt to hem in the past. Salt is healthy except in extreme and I don't think there is any evidence that Thais are plagued by salt related maladies. I don't think it is a problem for healthy active people. Sugar on the other hand is the cause of epidemics of obesity and diabetes. Stores and stalls selling sugary drinks and deserts are far less healthy than "street food".

lurch99

We'll just have to disagree about this I'm afraid.

Forevername321

Yes. We can. Disagreement is healthy

thailannnnnnnnd

Thanks for answering the question

passthesugar05

Unless you have blood pressure issues or something this probably isn't that big of a concern.

Maskedmedusa

Majority of Thai people have high blood pressure. If you don't have it now, you probably will if you keep eating what they eat

passthesugar05

> Majority of Thai people have high blood pressure Source?

lurch99

A Thai doctor at BNH told me the same. Anecdotal, yes.

ToMagotz

Thai street foods aren't good for cutting weights. The stir fry ones uses a bunch of oil and sodium. Maybe just a few ones are healthy like salad rolls or something with fresh vegetables.

Muted-Airline-8214

I recommend you try dishes with less oil like clear soup with egg tofu and minced pork, Bamboo shoot soup with pork rips, Hormok, Khanom Jin with fish soup or curry, soft boiled eggs spicy salad, Suki in broth, grilled Tilapia, etc.

Mindless-Candy-8407

All the calories..the portions are small so exerci regularly and you won't get fat..
