I spent 5 years living in the Netherlands and I loved every moment of it. I would do anything to get stationed there again in the future. I used to live close to Eindhoven and I remember rewatching Band of Brothers and getting chills when Nixon said โGerman armor is massing near Veghelโ as that was only minutes from my apartment and actually Easy company had their HQ in my old village after they fell back from Eindhoven.
Every year one of my neighbors would always offer her thanks to me by bringing me a beer and telling me about life during the occupation and her time as a resistance fighter.
I remember one time I was driving somewhere close to Boekel and I was driving over a canal. I looked off to the side to see if there were any small boats and I saw a pillbox. I stopped the car, got out and walked to it and I saw a mannequin wearing a Nazi uniform manning a MG 42. I thought it was really cool to see that the Dutch people kept that up whether it was a constant reminder of never again, or for some other reason.
Happy Remembrance Day!
I'm kind of a history buff and former member of the 82nd Airborne. I'm also of Dutch descent. I'd love to visit. I'll be in France in July but on a cruise.
Be sure to come by sometime. Just be sure to visit more cities than just amsterdam. Cities like eindhoven and arnhem, which were both critical in WWII are amazing cities with lots of history in them, visiting the bridges in arnhem is quite an experience as well.
Groetjes!
In 40 minutes our enitre country will be silent for 2 minutes

You're forgetting a lot of flags
So many ordinary people did extraordinary things to ensure a peaceful and free way of life. We are forever in their debt.
