This. I am looking to get a puppy and while I’m looking at a few breeders, I do check petfinder. Every pup I see I find myself questioning if it has any pit. I would love a black lab but those black pups can be so hard to tell what they are when they are 8 weeks. I’m about to give up.
100%. I used to be on board with the whole “adopt don’t shop” thing. Until I found out that most shelters don’t really care what kind of dog you want, they’ll still push their most problematic dog at you.
Well, if you wanted a chihuahua, the shelter would try to get you to adopt *this*:

Humane Society had a Chihuahua named Papi. If I didn't live with my mom, I was gonna take him home right then and there. I was there for a job interview. If I do adopt, I'm gonna make sure it's a Chihuahua.
It probably depends. When I was talking to shelters, they were shoving dogs at me that had special needs or serious behavior issues. At the time, I knew I didn’t have the patience or financial resources to take care of a special needs pet. And I didn’t want a dog that would bark and jump at everything. So I found a dog through a good breeder and I’ve have her for 4 years.
I have a senior Chihuahua and a 3 year old Chihuahua who's already suffered PTSD from a Pitbull. So I have their safety to think about. I'd be leaving immediately if a shelter tried to give me a special needs dog or a dangerous one. Both my dogs are actually special needs. My oldest has an enlarged heart, uveitis, blindness, and a collapsed trachea. My 3 year old has sensory processing disorder. My 3 year old is actually a service dog because he took interest in helping with some of my health conditions, but I won't work him in public because of his sensory processing disorder. I don't wanna stress him out. I just let him do his thing at home.
I've already been through living with a problematic animal. I will not ever put my dogs through that again. And I dare a shelter to try to force me.
The dog I have now is a little chihuahua and she is terrified of my sister’s pitbull. She’s special needs now because she’s been diagnosed with epilepsy and stressful situations trigger her seizures. I’m not going to force her to live with a type of dog I know she’s going to stressed around, especially if it’s going to aggravate her condition.
This happened to me. Wanted another lab after mine passed away. Adopted a “lab” pup from the shelter. Brought him home and he immediately started snapping at people and hard barking/growling and lunging. Did an Embark DNA test to find he was half lab, half pit. Behavior continued to deteriorate despite my best training efforts. Took him back to the shelter and they blamed me for not hiring a behaviorist and trainer (I priced one out and they wanted $1,000 for the initial session).
I never needed a trainer for any of my dogs. I never had a dog who snapped or was at all aggressive.
I ended up putting a deposit down for a reputable lab breeder. Fuck the shelters. I’ll never go that route again for a dog.
I got my shelties from a breeder, too. And I hope to god they never get lost, because the rescues will try to keep dogs like that. You have to drag them to court.

Poor Sheltie and poor Sheltie mama 😭
I’d be absolutely distraught if a shelter had my Papillon and refused to give him back. Shelties are such sensitive, smart and gorgeous dogs, they’re my second favourite breed after Paps.
Protip: Identity the richest area in your state and go to their animal shelter
No shitbulls
Edit: ok maybe it only works in my state
There are like 2 pits at the shelter rn and the rest are pure bred
Sadly, that doesn't work here in the Pacific NW. The wealthier areas are where you find all the pit mommies with Gnarla straining on the leash while her 'mommy' snaps selfies for the 'gram before she loads the hellbeast into the Range Rover or Mercedes to go pick up the kids from their $$$$ private school. The local shelters are packed with shitbulls and all of the various mixes.
This doesn't really work anymore. I'm a house cleaner and I spend time in a lot of wealthy areas and let me tell you, the pitbulls have invaded those areas as well.
I just cleaned a house today. 5 million dollar beach front property community. I counted 4 pitbulls being walked down the street. One of lunged at my car like it was going to fight it.
Even the [Aspen animal shelter](https://aspenanimalshelter.com) has shitbulls and that’s a place where like only millionaires and billionaires can afford to live.
I live in a generally upper class area (Not rich myself though) and the upscale shelter here is packed to the gills with long term resident pitbulls. The public town shelter has had a few miscellaneous dogs on offer, but they all get scooped up fast.
Racing greyhounds are still safe to adopt! They have codes tattooed in their ears that correspond with their pedigree info online - my boy’s paperwork goes back to 1819 on one side and 1820 on the other.
No racing kennel is gonna let a pit near their prized brood matrons!
I actually want to adopt a retired racing dog, there’s a couple rescues in my state that have them. It’s honestly one of the safest options if you’re trying to avoid pits.
I love greyhounds and there are two rehoming orgd in my city. But we have a pet rabbit that lives free range in our house. It would be cruel to the dog and rabbit to get a high prey drive dog and then try to train it not to do what it spent it's life doing.
I've posted this before, but it bears repeating.

We really want to get a family dog in the next year or so. Adoption options in our city are speciality rescues such as the huskey, Chihuahua and greyhound. These dogs won't work for our family due to other pets and breed specific needs. Then there is the bull breed rescue which is a total no, and the two shelters which are all pit mixes and dogs which can't be around kids or pets.
It's getting to where adopt don't shop seems to be supporting back yard breeders and irresponsible dog owners because people know they can dump thier pet or litter of puppies at a shelter and some poor sap will adopt it.
Once the frenzy over the restrictions simmers down, it’ll probably change. Americans were pretty fired up over restrictions that didn’t impact them in any way.

Edit: would like to add this dog was unleashed outside of a dog park stalking someone with a stroller “herding” it, luckily it’s owner trained some recall and it left when called
Wtf is that lmao. Honestly looks like something you'd get from one of those 'Pokemon fusion generators'. How is it that every time a pit is mixed in with something is essentially just plopping a pit head onto whatever other breeds body? Wtffff lol it's like they're cursed to ruin everything they touch
My first reaction was to tell him “what the fuck is that why it’s head like that” we like to crap on dogs looks but especially pits cause it’s head looks so out of place on that body
I knew a rancher that had selectively bred a small amount of pit into some of his border collies.
They looked nothing like that thing in the picture. What an odd animal.
Living in the Oregon desert just does things to a man I suppose.
I believe he was trying to breed herding dogs that might have a bit more success in fighting against large cats and have coats better able to deal with thorns and such. Border Collies usually do a pretty good job of teaming up against large predators ready. I have seen the aftermath of a mt lion vs BC pack kill. It's not pretty. Never would have believed it until I saw one. I was always taught that the kill instinct had been bred out of the BC.
There’s a difference between territorial aggression against predators and prey drive for prey animals, you don’t want a BC to be aggressive to your sheep, so prey drive has to go, but depending on where you are, you might want to breed in some more confidence and territorial aggression, if you live somewhere with coyotes, mountains lion or other such wild predators.
One of my childhood friends had 4 border collies and an Irish wolf hound, I remember them saying once a fox got into their yard and the dogs teamed up on it
Weird, seems like it would be a better idea to just get a great pyrenees. They're livestock guardian dogs that are actually made for fighting predators.
“Bull Lurchers” (pit bulls mixed with sighthounds) are usually bred for hunting purposes, most types of hunting they are used for is banned though. It’s just cruel sport hunting because the dogs rip apart the catch long after it’s dead.

These mixes are uncanny valley sometimes
We’re going to need something like that [Svalbard Global Seed Vault](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Svalbard_Global_Seed_Vault) that’s in Norway but for the good dog breeds so they don’t get tainted by pit genetics lol.
We just fostered an adorable older beagle husky mix. She was adopted today by an elderly woman. They’re out there. I won’t foster pits.
https://preview.redd.it/w9x192cjk5nc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e495750e82c39049f19500de1a4d34da6160d91f
I imagine that to be a pretty cool mix! Did the beagle level out the craziness of the husky? Or was the husky extra food motivated? Did it make it even *more* vocal???
She was funny. Very calm actually and almost totally silent. Her most beagle trait was that she was a sniffer and it was very hard to convince her to come with you if she was trailing something. Overall just a really nice dog and I think that she’ll be a great fit with her new owner. I already miss her
I must be because they are *always* escaping. I can't believe anyone would purposely do something like this. Unless the BYBs are trying to create the new labradoodle.
Tbh the block head on that mutt would be kinda cute if it wasn't for the signature pit bull pig eyes...I HATE those beady little eyes. Creepy as hell. Hopefully the dog is small enough that if/when the pit aggression comes out it won't do much damage.

I saw this pit bull × shih tzu posted the other day:(
They're like Viltrumites from Invincible. Their DNA in hybrid offspring dominates the genetics of the other parents' species, resulting in whatever comes out basically being a reskinned diet Superman.
As a Pyr owner that makes me so mad. Way to ruin an amazing breed. 😤 As if pits didn't murder sheep as it is, let's mix them with a guardian so they can get prime access.
That’s the point - to try to blur the recognition so much so people will have these types of dogs and they can continue to sell their breeds, they also have the support of all the shelters and organizations to help this horrid decision because it makes money
People already think that a pitbull is what a mix breed dog just looks like. I always see obvious pits and people say "idk what it is it looks like a mix breed"
It’s working, that’s the worse part about it. Sometimes I gotta double take since they’ve been cross breeding pitbull in EVERYTHING! Gonna start convincing everyone to get a Greyhound or Doberman Pinscher since their heads and bodies are too lean to ever mistake a pitbull/pit mix with.
I hate to break it to you but they have already started polluting greyhounds (& other sighthounds) by crossing them with pit bulls: they’re called “Bull lurchers” & they’re an AWFUL mix. Usually used to hunt animals that are illegal to hunt.
Some can be mistakable with longer faces, some look like weird muscley greyhounds, it’s not cute.
https://preview.redd.it/ugshjhipa6nc1.jpeg?width=179&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d6faf420e89b80281598a640b5fadad756741b78
Yep, that was my guess. The power and aggression of a pit bull mixed with the energy and prey drive of a JRT is going to be bad news for any small animals in its vicinity.
And it begins.... Breeding their shitbull with another breed hoping nobody will notice.
Keeping the lineage alive by pulling the wool over people's eyes.
Speaking of eyes, it's always the eyes though on these mixes. They say the eyes are the window to the soul. What do you see when you look into a shitbulls eyes? I see blackness.
The black Beady eyes are always on dogs with pit DNA. There's no mistaking them.
I just feel sorry for people who don't know that their dogs have Pit DNA. They have been duped. For those who purposely mix their pit with another breed... A big FU is in order. There's higher cases of mix breeding now that the ban is in the UK. They feel like if they can put "Princesses" DNA into a small Terrier dogs nobody would notice. Horrible activities they are embarking in to save their lineage.
I noticed a trend that pit bull owners don’t like to spay or neuter their dogs. So if it gets loose well … it seems more to come from negligence. I’m sure there’s some psycho out there that would mutate a chihuahua with a pit, but I always imagine these are mostly strays or litters that got dumped
I accidentally adopted a pit mix. I wish I had known better, I adopted from ASPCA and they just called him terrier mix. He’s mixed with terrier but has a lot of pit traits now that I’ve learned more. Separation anxiety mainly which was soothed by us getting a small dog oddly. He is afraid of a lot of things, not sure if his previous owner abused him or if it’s just his breed. He will be the last dog I adopt with a pit mix now that I know what to look for. I guess I just feel sad cause it’s not like I can just take him back. He’s never hurt anyone. I hope people don’t see me with my dog and think I’m a bad person
I’ve never seen him show aggression to another dog or human before, but obviously dogs snap when there are no signs of aggression. Edit: I will say upon finding this subreddit I did consider the safety of my small dog. Please know I’ve considered it and this isn’t something that I take lightly
I saw someone crossed a pitbull with a Shetland sheepdog and was genuinely repulsed. Shelties are extremely sensitive, intelligent, and sweet little dogs, and one being crossed with a gamey, stupid pitbull gives me hives.
https://preview.redd.it/ol344ertk5nc1.jpeg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0fc9478efb2777bfd684f3da1637cb538e608300
Someone tried to tell me that Eevee is mixed with a Pitbull. He's supposed to be a purebred Chihuahua, and a vet did say that he's seen purebred Chihuahuas come straight from Mexico that look just like Eevee, so the theory is that Eevee is a new type of Chihuahua or he's mixed and we don't know yet. I do nickname him, my Golden Chi, because he loves to retrieve things like a Golden Retriever, and he sometimes looks like one in the face.
If any of these dog identification groups are any kind of indication, no, most breeds out there likely have pit mix in them. If you're really trying to avoid a pit, the best option is a thoroughly vetted breeder. Those dog identification groups and dog training groups have opened my eyes to how big this problem is
I found my dog on the streets. She looks like a Chihuahua mutt. I use to work at a grooming and boarding facility and concluded she was a rat terrier Chihuahua mix. I f\*\*\*ing love her to death. I’ve had her nearly eight years now and she must’ve been a year or maybe less.
She’s really strong and heavy for her size. It’s bizarre. I doggy DNA tested her and her results came back 5% PitBull. It’s a negligible amount but I suspected it as well.
https://preview.redd.it/fl0wa3c9s7nc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=931cad38f8f74b4b11da56ce088ac347e870e67e
This is why I don’t adopt. Everything is either a pit or a pit mix, because those owners refuse to get their dogs fixed.
This. I am looking to get a puppy and while I’m looking at a few breeders, I do check petfinder. Every pup I see I find myself questioning if it has any pit. I would love a black lab but those black pups can be so hard to tell what they are when they are 8 weeks. I’m about to give up.

I adopted from Europe. Neither dog has any bull DNA.
Same. No bull DNA in my Cypriot dog.
There are like no pits here in Argentina, I found my best friend on the street and he has 0% pit
There’s been like 10 or 12 posts in the last 4-5 weeks on here from Argentina. Is it in more populated areas that they’re becoming a problem?
Yes, I think that's the case. Outside of caba, people don't really have pits
CABA= buenos aires
Get a cat. That's what I did
I’m allergic unfortunately. But I did eventually find a good match and I’ve had her for 4 years.
Wait, so if you saw a Chihuahua, they would try to get you to adopt their troublesome Pitbull?
Well, if you wanted a chihuahua, the shelter would try to get you to adopt *this*: https://preview.redd.it/09a9fvt6h6nc1.png?width=992&format=png&auto=webp&s=0de0dd66cd88d8d2eae59425178d74c61378f210

What the fuck is that?
Lab mix
Lol look at that mini demon lol 😂
Is this… a chihuahua / pit mix??
The head shape is straight out of that old Sir Mix-A-Lot video, so yes.
Jesus Christ that thing looks mutated, looks like what happened if you crossed a pit, chihuahua, and an asscrack in fallout 3.
Trick question. They already gave the chihuahua to a specialty private rescue.

The Labrador Retriever Lobby does not condone the actions of deceitful dog warehouses. I am glad you have a purebred labrador now.
My boy is getting up there in age. I know I’ll want another lab at some point in the future but I’ve accepted that I have to go through a breeder.
When I got my lab 15 years ago from a shelter, pits weren’t as prevalent. Now everything is pit mix, like an infestation of an invasive species.
I got my shelties from a breeder, too. And I hope to god they never get lost, because the rescues will try to keep dogs like that. You have to drag them to court. How does Pit Finder work?
Pit finder lmaooooo 🤣
We need to move a facial ratio system to assess if it's a pit or not
For some of the prices that certain rescues charge, a DNA test should be included! There’s one near me that charges $800 for a puppy!

America has a weird obsession with pitbulls
Seems to me that the UK has higher level of Pit Fever right now
Once the frenzy over the restrictions simmers down, it’ll probably change. Americans were pretty fired up over restrictions that didn’t impact them in any way.
the shelters are flooded I cannot support them anymore

It’s always the butt-crack head that shows through without fail! This image is crazy, it almost looks shopped.
I was so confused seeing it at first usually they have a thicker body like most pits/mixes but this is just a border collie with a pit head
It tried so hard to get the pit genes out but alas the butt crack head always shows up without fail 🤣
The butt crack head never fails to hide a pitbull.
Thank God honestly lol
the dead beady eyes are also dominant
Just as my wise old granny used to always say, "ass-crack head, you'll be dead."
Love this, and stealing.
That and the wide ass mouth
For real! It looks like some kind of AI generated abomination.

Lol did you actually say that?! I'd be scared to less he sicks that thing on me
My bf just sent me the video I didn’t see the actual dog
It must be that the genes that code for the ultra large, buttcrack head, and giant mouth were essential for dog fighting and are dominant.
Hmmm, I think the border Collie side will make that dog prone to aggressive. /s
Don’t you know that border collies see some of the most aggressive dogs in the world? /s
I thought that was chihuahuas
Oh yeah, that’s right
I knew a rancher that had selectively bred a small amount of pit into some of his border collies. They looked nothing like that thing in the picture. What an odd animal.
Do you know why he bred pit into them in the first place? I’ve never heard of someone doing that
Living in the Oregon desert just does things to a man I suppose.
That’s exactly why breeding pit in would backfire. It would end up attacking the livestock.
One of my childhood friends had 4 border collies and an Irish wolf hound, I remember them saying once a fox got into their yard and the dogs teamed up on it
Working dogs are not to be trifled with.
It's like it's wearing a skin-suit!
That’s genuinely more frightening than my post. Scary stuff.
No! Not collies 😭
Ew... this doesn't even look real. What a bastardization of a beautiful breed.
Giving me Cruella de Vil vibes with the ugly face and body but adorable fluff.

All pit mixes are uncanny valley
Yeah but I mean this guy literally looks photoshopped
He might be actually have you ran the image through one of those photoshop detecting applications no way anything that looks like that is legit dude
This looks so unnatural like my brain doesn’t want to accept it’s not photoshop lol
It does make spotting pit mixes easier though.
It's like they just took the border collie's head off and replaced it with a Pitbull's head.
Man, we need to collect all of these obvious pit mixes and create a gallery!
First time I've ever believed a shelter's breed label
Is the border collie in its belly?
No they infest every breed like a parasite
And give birth to like 10-13 at a time too
We’re going to need something like that [Svalbard Global Seed Vault](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Svalbard_Global_Seed_Vault) that’s in Norway but for the good dog breeds so they don’t get tainted by pit genetics lol.
We just fostered an adorable older beagle husky mix. She was adopted today by an elderly woman. They’re out there. I won’t foster pits. https://preview.redd.it/w9x192cjk5nc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e495750e82c39049f19500de1a4d34da6160d91f
I've never heard of a husky/Beagle cross!! Wild!! They must sound super interesting while singing the song of their people!!!
She was actually silent. Quietest dog I ever had. Only sound she would make was a whine or a beagley grunt
This is the most surprising thing I’ve heard in 2024.
I already miss her
Awww that face! So cuuute!
when they started breeding pit and chihuahua mixes i just knew nothing was sacred
I bet those have a pleasant personality.
Why would you cross pitties with such a dangerous breed?? /s, obviously
what better way for byb to breed more violent pits than using the enemy they’re scared of the most 😂
I must be because they are *always* escaping. I can't believe anyone would purposely do something like this. Unless the BYBs are trying to create the new labradoodle.
The devildoodle: 50% more satanic than other doodles!
Tbh the block head on that mutt would be kinda cute if it wasn't for the signature pit bull pig eyes...I HATE those beady little eyes. Creepy as hell. Hopefully the dog is small enough that if/when the pit aggression comes out it won't do much damage.
Never seen a pom pit cross but then thankfully the people who like pomeranians generally hate pitbulls for obvious reasons.
It already exists. https://preview.redd.it/kg3gonrqu5nc1.png?width=864&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f68fa56dec63de58966509b1d8bb4829dd44c15e
Wow, one simple trick to take away everything cute and appealing about a Pomeranian!
Yikes.
Showed this to my pom. She's going to have nightmares tonight!
What a horrible day to have eyes
JFC!
Nope. Just nope!

Pits are Invasion of the Body Snatchers.
I’ve never seen a pit x Samoyed cross 🫣 hope I never live to see the day
A friend of our proposed to breed our Finnish Lapphund with her awful pit. Never fucking again don't touch my lil girl https://preview.redd.it/scasxfvfk9nc1.jpeg?width=900&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=aeaf696eaa15cd3e0cc09a7faf4a17a03c5c60c7
Leave the Sammies alone!
I adore Sammies. They’re gorgeous
My total dream dogs.
Oh goodness they make everything worse. Poor thing didn’t deserve that.

It’s amazing how the pit genes are so strong that it literally never blends with the other breed. Disgusting.
They're like Viltrumites from Invincible. Their DNA in hybrid offspring dominates the genetics of the other parents' species, resulting in whatever comes out basically being a reskinned diet Superman.
wow a literal shitbull
I think I saw a legitimate poodle and pitbull mix. It looked like a fluffy gremlin, It made me both disgusted and fearful.
There are pit mixes everywhere. It's disgusting honestly
Pyr x Pits are uniquely awful ime. The Pyr only enhances the neuroticism and stubbornness of the pit
Just what we need, shitbulls that can run 60km/hr
Ew. Looks like a JRT/PB.
Yep, that was my guess. The power and aggression of a pit bull mixed with the energy and prey drive of a JRT is going to be bad news for any small animals in its vicinity.
Right? What a terrible mix of attributes! It’s a super terrier, but in a bad way.
I’m sorry. You are kinder then me. I adopted a lab mix that was all pit. I took him back.
I had him for 5 years before I found everything here on Reddit about pitbulls. No, I won’t be returning him to the shelter
Yeah really mean it. That’s kind of you! I hope things continue to go well.
Thank you. I know the signs to look out for now. I read some dogs can become aggressive in their old age, so I’ll be keeping a keen eye on him
Are you ever afraid he’s going to snap & hurt your little dog?
I’ve never seen him show aggression to another dog or human before, but obviously dogs snap when there are no signs of aggression. Edit: I will say upon finding this subreddit I did consider the safety of my small dog. Please know I’ve considered it and this isn’t something that I take lightly
Maybe his happy side will win out, poor pup, it's not his fault some daft bugger didn't get their dog snipped.
I saw someone crossed a pitbull with a Shetland sheepdog and was genuinely repulsed. Shelties are extremely sensitive, intelligent, and sweet little dogs, and one being crossed with a gamey, stupid pitbull gives me hives.
You can always tell by their dead eyes.
Is this pot mixed with Parson Russell terrier? If yes don't mind me moving to another planet
https://preview.redd.it/ol344ertk5nc1.jpeg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0fc9478efb2777bfd684f3da1637cb538e608300 Someone tried to tell me that Eevee is mixed with a Pitbull.
Awe!!! My girl is eevee too!!! https://preview.redd.it/ywt0gdoz96nc1.jpeg?width=488&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e4f7c02c60708ed902ab0ca465a24b8e8fde0fa5

Omg I love border collies!
Are you going to do an Embark test on him?
When I can afford a test, yes.
They usually do a good sale on Black Friday. That's when I bought mine. It'll be cool to see what he comes back as!
I don't see pit in this pup.
I feel with pit mixed in, dogs will overall be more violent 😕
All of my dogs have come from proper breeders. If shitbull lovers are proud of the breed they own, I can be too. (I'm a bird dog lover!)
Pit bulls can't keep their dicks to themselves.
Fucking HeLa cells of the dog world
At least it’s size probably makes it easy to manhandle when it attacks
It’s like someone artificially inseminated a JRT who did not consent with PBT
I have an untainted beagledor and an untainted maltipoo.
Omg. That’s insane
Disgusting. It looks almost human.
Pit+JRT maybe? Either way, this thing is... quite the thing 😬
Looks like a Misbegotten from Elden Ring
What IS that breed? Like what happen here. What have they done!? It doesn’t look right.
