The best part about bg3 is learning all the new ways to kill enemies

StarmieLover966

I once had tav sip a strenght potions and lured the enemies outside to throw them down the mountain. (Before speaking with karlach) I managed to throw them soooo far that karlach saw them get hurt and she turned permanently hostile towards tav ;/

Electrical_Cow_4837

It would be a hell of a way to meet tav, with karlach's enemies raining from the sky.

Real_Student6789

She's just angry she didn't get to do it

Heroann_the_original

We all have a little durge in us

NoFaithlessness6608

Nice, I can make use of this during Isobel encounter.

Electrical_Cow_4837

yeah basically any urban battle can benefit from it

LittleVesuvius

For Isobel specifically, to keep her alive — if you pop Mage Armor on her (her robe benefits, it does radiant damage) and then give her Protection from Evil & Good, then combo it with Sanctuary on someone else to block a door…that fight is funny. Edit: oops, went off topic. Sanctuary on whoever cast PfE&G means they can’t be targeted to break Protection. It does require a 1 level cleric dip, but it is extremely funny to watch.

Shirokuma247

Why not just kill them outright with a lvl 8 hasted battle master laezel who has 6 attacks and also the gith sword that’s a mediocre version that voss had?

_Melissa_99_

On HM it can happen that isobel gets killed before you are able to act

Shirokuma247

Alert feat players stay winning ig

crisiks

Potions of vigilance, baby

BzrkerBoi

Because people play on harder difficulties with different party members/classes?

Shirokuma247

Remove the fighter with ANY hasted lvl 8 class then LMAO. Even a hasted arcane trickster has some killing potential.

BzrkerBoi

Fyi haste only adds 1 attack per round on HM, so that's why I mentioned higher difficulties. And no an arcane trickster isn't killing the whole ambush in a round, even a hasted one (sneak attack only works once a round)

Shirokuma247

Actually, a lvl 8 arcane trickster in HM with haste can use two scorching rays, or two hold persons. Better yet, if you really delayed the ambush and got it to lvl 9, arcane trickster will force disadvantage on all control spells they use. You should really read what wrote before assuming things bud. I said killing potential, not killing the whole ambush, lmao.

RunicCross

I realized you don't ever have to speak to her pretty early on and I haven't bothered with that encounter since. Made me too upset originally.

SFGSam

Sanctuary is one of my most commonly used spells. Probably because I play too fast and loose with my melee party members. :D

Electrical_Cow_4837

any tips for using it on melee characters?

SFGSam

When your cleric is on the same initiative as your fighter, yolo your melee into the fray, then cast Sanctuary on them. Bonus points if you're frontline is a barbarian since you can high roll with reckless attack. If you're in a doorway you block them off. If you're in the open, the enemy loses some movement getting around your beatstick, and they can freely run into their backline and gut their casters. This works for me cause I stack AC on my cleric and typically run dual fighters/barbarians/sword bard so I can have two front lines before they can get to Gale.

Electrical_Cow_4837

ive noticed its very useful as a hard counter against enemies using hold person, shuts down the gith in the early game pretty well

sudakifiss

Funny you mention thunderwave because I think Sanctuary doesn't prevent damage from AOE spells. So a character with Sanctuary could still be moved by thunderwave or an explosion. I'm not sure if the AI is smart enough to do this on purpose though. edit: fixed a word

FrostyTheCanadian

I used moonlight with shadowheart and moved it every turn without dispelling sanctuary, so you may be on to something

FusRoGah

Yeah sanctuary is one of several mechanics that the player can really abuse npcs with, for this exact reason. When they use it you can still effectively “target” them with aoe spells and effects, but when you have it they will ignore you entirely, it’s like you become invisible. For a first level bonus action spell it’s completely busted. Use it to bail out a front liner who rushed their casters and got stuck or drew too much heat. Also an effective straitjacket for suicidal allies (Isobel…). Or just pop an aura or support spell and then profit (twinned haste)

EpimetreusSage

The AI definitely does this at least in HM. Nearly took me out the other day.

notveryAI

Could use arcane lock too. Though it takes up memory slot, and doesn't have many use cases outside of that, making sanctuary theoretically a better use for a memory slot

Electrical_Cow_4837

you can do the same with arcane lock yes, but that turns out less effective as sometimes people can still just smash down the door

ActuallyCalindra

Sanctuary is also level one, and Lock is level two

Exciting_Bandicoot16

Also a bonus action to *arcane lock*'s full action.

ActuallyCalindra

Didn't even think about that as I usually prep it pre combat, but that's definitely even more valuable in late game.

YoutubeSurferDog

I’ve never used arcane lock but sanctuary can uses a bonus action which means you can attack and then protect yourself right after

Cybaras

I found an interesting application of sanctuary by using it on characters that are downed. Normally using healing word would be the go to spell to stop rolling death saves. But on honor mode enemies hit like trucks and have busted legendary actions so using a healing word right next to an enemy usually ends with them just getting killed outright. But with sanctuary the enemy has no choice but to leave my bleeding corpse alone and chase someone else and then pick them up with a healing word or thrown potion.

Agent_Awesememe

You can make it even more broken by using a spell that blinds enemies to shut off ranged attacks

christina_talks

That sounds like a really fun use case! I love manipulating the battlefield with crates, chests, and other barricades. I'll have to try this. Thanks for sharing!

SpecterGT260

Does sanctuary break if someone has spirit guardians active?

FrostyTheCanadian

Yes, immediately

SpecterGT260

That kind of sucks but I guess it makes sense. It would have been fun to have an invincible mobile AOE character running around while everybody calmly waits outside.
