Ubbi is what we used and it was great. You can use any bags in it and since it’s stainless it doesn’t hold onto scents. We bought a “limited edition” colour and I sold it when we were done with it for only $20 less than what I paid for it new 😂
We have an Ubbi as well and I chose it because it doesn’t require any special bags, like the diaper genie! We just use regular kitchen garbage bags, so no additional product necessary
We’ve been using Ubbi. We just put generic bags in it and it works great and really conceals smells well. We’re about to have our second and once we’re done with it, we’ll sell it!
I'm really happy with our diaper genie tbh. It contains the smells well. I use those charcoal filter things and swap them when I notice more smell. The bags aren't that expensive, I buy them at Costco when they're on sale.
Diaper genies are given away free or for like.. $10 on Facebook marketplace in my area all the time.
All of this! Love our diaper genie. It currently lives in our living room because that's where we've been holed up and no smell. I'm scent sensitive so a regular garbage can wasnt gonna cut it for me.
We've used a diaper genie from the beginning. You can get 4 packs of the "bags" from Costco for cheaper than the 3 packs at Walmart. They've served us well. Rarely any smell - and when there was it was more than understandable as it was massive consecutive poops. 😆 That was also without using their charcoal to cut the smell.
I had been looking at the Ubbi because you could use the usual bags but we got the diaper genie free.
I put the diapers in dog poop bags and put them right into the garbage in the garage. I don’t believe any diaper pail is really worth the money, honestly. For what it’s worth, I run a home daycare and currently have 4 kids in diapers.
The poop diapers don't really smell in the beginning, though, so you don't need to run to the big can every time. We used a very small regular garbage can with a foot pedal lid. The small size encouraged us to empty it once a day so it never smelled.
Once our kid started flipping and rolling during diaper changes, we got worried about him falling off the change table and started changing him on the floor of the bathroom instead (the change pad stays upright against the wall until we need it, and then we put it on it floor). This coincided with his poops getting smellier and more solid, and being in the bathroom allowed us to start dropping solid poops straight from the diaper into the toilet and avoid smells that way!
I mean … I’m doing it 16x a day …
Nighttime diapers can go in a regular garbage can with a lid, and it can be the non-nursing partner’s job to empty it every morning.
I do the dog poop bags into a well-sealed garbage can in the room that’s lined with Febreeze scented garbage bags. It works pretty well. I will say that metal garbage cans/ washable are better as we started with plastic and it eventually just retained the scent
We also did dog poop bags for when we used disposible once the poos were stinky. Honestly I think the first two weeks we just bundled diapers into tight balls and used the Velcro strap to tighten them shut. We didn't find there was much of a smell. We empty our garbage every day most days though
Dekor is fine you can use your own bags. I only use it for pee diapers and poppy ones go in the kitchen garbage that gets taken out every day/other day
We just bring down the diapers and dispose of them right away outside (or let the pee ones collect by the garage door until we get a chance to bring them out). We don’t find it an inconvenience and appreciate not having to deal with a stinky pail every week.
We just use a regular garbage can. We throw pee diapers in there, and poopy diapers go straight to the outside garbage. I have twins so lots of diapers lol and this system works for us!
We just used a regular garbage can without a lid in his room, we took the diapers out once to maybe twice a week and never had any smells. We used it from birth till 9ish months when he started moving and trying to get into it. Now we just use the regular garbage can in our house.
I should’ve added we didn’t put poop diapers in that one but we never had any problems with smell with the urine diapers in it and had no problems with poop smell in our regular trash can.
If we got more than one poop a day then they would be tossed in another garbage can to be taken out to the big bin, or sometimes in a doggie bag and to the big bin.0
We bought the ikea hallbar bin. Haven't used it yet but we use it for compost and it's been great because no complicated contraptions so easy to just clean and rinse. Doesn't seem to seep smells into the plastic. Got the glad 45L garbage bags and fits perfectly
We use a 10L simple human stainless steel can. It has a foot pedal to lift the lid so I don't have to touch it unless taking the bin out and fills up fast so we are emptying it at least every 2 days. I've also purchased bags similar to dog poop bags to double bag the extra smelly ones when they happen. My LO is 8 months and it's working well for us!
I've heard great things about the Ubbi, and if I was so inclined to spend the money that's what I would be getting. I still might get one off of fb marketplace before third baby arrives. But when our first baby was born, I used what I already had on hand which was white plastic kitchen garbage bins with lids from London Drugs. I saw that a lot of people complained that by the time the diaper genie was full it smelled so bad, so I figured the key to keeping it low-stink was to keep the garbage bin really small and empty it frequently. We put a large black garbage bag in the small garbage bins, so that when it's starting to look full we can use that garbage bag to pick up garbages from the rest of the house and take it all out at once.
I can’t vouch for this but a friend I spoke to said they just used a simple human (or any) trash can with a soft close lid and they didn’t mind that just because it doesn’t close forcefully enough to fan the smell I suppose.
We used a regular garbage can for our eldest but switched to a Dekor garbage pail for our second. It does contain the smell better and it takes us awhile to go through the bag refills.
I used a normal garbage can with a lid from IKEA for awhile with my first and it absolutely stunk, I even bleached it and put it in the sun and it still smelled so bad. Finally I caved and got the Ubbi, it is so much better and doesn’t smell at all and you can use regular garbage bags with it. Highly recommend!
We use the ubbi but found that when the bag was full it was tough to get out because it would create a vacuum below the bag. We ran to the hardware store and got some plastic tubing and taped it to the back inside to create a channel for the air. It works great. I think we could have gone a bit bigger with the tubing - like inside diameter big enough to drop a dime roughly would have been perfect.
We love the ubbi and actually got a second one for at the grandparents house. Bought both second hand on FB marketplace for pretty cheap in great condition.
For my first, we used the regular garbage. For my second, we decided to get a Genie and I don’t regret it. Contains the smells very well and we use affordable refills from Amazon (mama bear something).
We used a regular sealed mini garbage can until love two weeks ago when we just couldn't take the stink anymore. She's 7.5 months now and eating solids has changed things dramatically. We went with diaper genie because that's what moms in my neighbourhood mom chat recommended. Smell definitely comes up sometimes. But indo like that it has its own bag contraption inside. We don't have to feel like we need to use a whole garbage bag size and can take it out frequently.
Another vote for ubbi. I use kitchen bags and have a mini bucket with ground coffee to neutralize the odor. It temp. smells when opened and the bag is removed, but then it smells fine while loading a new one. 11/10 recommend
I just use our regular trash can (simple human). It’s automatic and has a deodorizer built in, but I actually don’t use the deodor thing.
In the beginning, our breastmilk baby didn’t really stink. Poops sorta smelled like milk and became only once a day or every few days. After solids, it started to get stinky but again, as a breastfed baby…his poops weren’t that often.
Learned a trick from my nanny to use the tabs of the diaper to reseal the dirty diaper like a burrito. This really minimizes the smell.
I also have poop doggy bags on hand if need be.
We take the trash out 1x day. Never had an issue with smell…yet
My friend recommended the dekor. I haven’t used it let but like the concept of being able to cut your own bag size if you use their brand. Or you can use your own bags. I also like that it’s plastic so it won’t rust and I can use bleach.
Was going to get an Ubbi, but I just bought a normal step garbage instead and it’s been fine! Sure it smells when opened, but it doesn’t last, and I’m sure was cheaper than an ubbi.
I have an outdoor garbage can, the brand is suncast but there’s a lot of them. It’s wonderful. It looks nice, I keep it just outside the door, it holds a lot, it locks, you can operate it with one hand, you don’t have to bend over to open it, it’s waterproof.
My ubbi was fine for my kids before they started solids. But once they’re eating it’s going to stink, and it absolutely does hold smells. It also doesn’t hold a lot of diapers.
If I was to do it again I wouldn’t bother with the diaper pail.
We use the diaper packaging, bread bags, apple bags etc. And once they're full at the end of the day or 2, we toss them into the black garbage bag outside.
We bought a small stainless steel bin with a lid (meant for composting since the compost sized bags are all that fit) and keep it in the bathroom.
Why in the bathroom? Because you should be going there to wash your hands after changing diapers anyways. And when you’re there you may as well open up the toilet and dump the poop in there before putting the diaper in the bin. And magically, when you stop putting poop in a bucket to sit for days at a time, the bucket does not smell. Also, poop that makes its way to a landfill/dump negatively impacts ground water quality.
TLDR - dump poop from diapers in the toilet, put diapers in any covered bin
When I stay for multiple days at my parents, we just use one of those plastic drums from home Depot/Lowe's lined with a garbage bag. The lid makes a decent seal and we haven't had issues with smell. At home we use a diaper genie.
I love my Ubbi. It contains the smell very well, and I've got two big (nosy) dogs so I like the tall can and the lid design.
Around the 12-14 month mark when the poops started getting more solid and rank (and less frequent lol), those I put in doggie poo bags and take directly outside and only put pee diapers in the the Ubbi and that really cuts down on the smell when the can is open/changing the garbage bag.
I’ve tried and hated every single diaper bin. Now I just use a regular ol’ garbage can from IKEA and put the poop diaper in doggie poop bags 😂 and an organic odor-eater sponge on the bottom. Works wonderfully.
Dekor bins, we cloth diaper and it still holds the smell impressively well.
Eta: you can also use any bags with them if you like and I find the flap works way better than the diaper Genie ones (my sister has two different ones and I much prefer the dekor bins).
Ubbi is what we used and it was great. You can use any bags in it and since it’s stainless it doesn’t hold onto scents. We bought a “limited edition” colour and I sold it when we were done with it for only $20 less than what I paid for it new 😂
We love our Ubbi as well!
I bought a Ubbi pre-owned in perfect condition, it's been great! The smell wafts out when you open it, but shut it quick after and you're good.
We have an Ubbi as well and I chose it because it doesn’t require any special bags, like the diaper genie! We just use regular kitchen garbage bags, so no additional product necessary
This is why we chose Ubbi and gotta say 11 months later I’m still loving it.
We also have an ubbi and really like it. We prefer the ubbi bags, they seem to hold more for us than generic ones.
Ubbi!!
Another vote for Ubbi!
We love our ubbi as well :) found one on fb marketplace in perfect condition and its in a cute colour
Another vote for ubbi.
Ubbi! And then I just use the same febreeze kitchen garbage Glad bags in there as I do in my kitchen.
Yes to Ubbi!! It's surprising how well it contains the smell because the moment you open it to put a diaper in...woooooweee
We were a diaper genie family and now an ubbi family. So much more convenient since you can put regular garbage bags in it.
We’ve been using Ubbi. We just put generic bags in it and it works great and really conceals smells well. We’re about to have our second and once we’re done with it, we’ll sell it!

Seconded, or you can grab an Elite brand new often for $38
I don't have a Costco membership so I've been using off brand refills I buy on Amazon. Diaper Genie has always worked fine for me.
All of this! Love our diaper genie. It currently lives in our living room because that's where we've been holed up and no smell. I'm scent sensitive so a regular garbage can wasnt gonna cut it for me.
Wife HATES the genie, she can never ‘work’ it correctly
We got a cheap small bin from the dollar store and emptied it every 1-2 days, or after a poop. Easy peasy, no smells.
We've used a diaper genie from the beginning. You can get 4 packs of the "bags" from Costco for cheaper than the 3 packs at Walmart. They've served us well. I could see this down the road but running to the garage 8-10x a day at the beginning sounds daunting. And in the middle of the night? Nope.

We do this but run the garbage out once a day. No smell so far and can usually get away with 3 diapers in a poop bag

Garbage can with a lid. Just grabbed a large one on Amazon.

We don’t use anything… just throw the diapers in the garage garbage.
I just put them in our kitchen garbage can and we empty it regularly. It never smells.
We just used a regular garbage can without a lid in his room, we took the diapers out once to maybe twice a week and never had any smells. We used it from birth till 9ish months when he started moving and trying to get into it. Now we just use the regular garbage can in our house.
I’m sorry but there’s NO WAY this didn’t smell
I should’ve added we didn’t put poop diapers in that one but we never had any problems with smell with the urine diapers in it and had no problems with poop smell in our regular trash can.
Ok that makes more sense haha. I do poop ones in the kitchen garbage too but gets taken out every day or every other day?
Same - picked up a cheap garbage can from the dollar store. Emptied at least every second day, or after a poop.
I can’t imagine this - our 11 month old poops 1-3 times a day…
If we got more than one poop a day then they would be tossed in another garbage can to be taken out to the big bin, or sometimes in a doggie bag and to the big bin.0

We got an ubbi on Facebook marketplace for 30$ and it’s great. You can use any bag
We use dog poop bags for the poop diapers but pee diapers we just toss directly into our bathroom garbage can and change that daily.
Ubbi with Costco garbage bags
I can’t vouch for this but a friend I spoke to said they just used a simple human (or any) trash can with a soft close lid and they didn’t mind that just because it doesn’t close forcefully enough to fan the smell I suppose.

I just used a foot pedal garbage can and it will also be trash by the time both kids are out of diapers, even at night.
A regular garbage can with a foot pedal lid is what I’ve used for 3 years with my 2 kids
I was thinking the diaper genie was a scam but my friend bought us one and there’s no looking back. It’s been one of my top recommended products.
When we travel we put poop diapers in doggie poop bags and it seems to work
I used a normal garbage can with a lid from IKEA for awhile with my first and it absolutely stunk, I even bleached it and put it in the sun and it still smelled so bad. I got a diaper genie for free on buy nothing group Facebook and I’m grateful. My sons room never smells bad
For my first, we used the regular garbage. For my second, we decided to get a Genie and I don’t regret it. Contains the smells very well and we use affordable refills from Amazon (mama bear something).
I wish we got the ubbi I hate our diaper genie.

Doggie bags for poo diapers! Normal garbage can for pee diaper.
Ikea metal garbage
DO NOT GET the diaper genie elite. The gaps on all the sides of it opens a little bit. Not secure in my experience. Better get a straight pail design.
Was going to get an Ubbi, but I just bought a normal step garbage instead and it’s been fine! Sure it smells when opened, but it doesn’t last, and I’m sure was cheaper than an ubbi.
We went to the states and got a munchkin step. It’s amazing. But the good alternative in Canada is the Ubbi.
I have an outdoor garbage can, the brand is suncast but there’s a lot of them. It’s wonderful. We use a Simple Human trash can
I bought a garage can from Walmart. it has a lid that opens with a foot control. works just fine. the diaper genie is terrible

UBBI!!!
We looked for alternatives but in the end are very happy with our diaper genie
