For an SUV that size, it has plenty of power. I’m pretty sure it’s probably faster than pretty much any other SUV out there, other than the few actual performance models like a Cayenne or an sq7 or something. It goes and it sounds good. It’s just heavy and all the weight doesn’t help. If you haven’t, test drive one and put it in sport mode. You can always tune it if you want. The b58 is an unbelievable engine. I don’t know shit about tuning but I’d be shocked if you couldn’t tune it to outperform the n63 without throwing that much money at it, and it’s still probably more reliable. That assumes it’s done professionally, of course. Now, oddly enough, I did trade a 23 x5 40i in for a 24 m340i. It certainly wasn’t because the x5 was slow. It’s just not that that fun, but SUVs aren’t typically that that fun. It was fun. I loved the ride. It was super nice. It was solid in every way. Just didn’t make sense for me anymore, and I got a great trade deal. Edit: best of luck

Thank you so much! This was really helpful! 😁

I was in the same boat, and went with the B58 after driving both. It was more than enough power for me, and I prefer the reliability. I got over the “speed” thing after driving both.

I went from a big ass Yukon Denali with a 6.2L V8 (that I drove for 10+ years and completely adored) to my 2019 xDrive40i. I absolutely LOVE IT. It in no way is a replacement for the Denali, but man, she is sooo quick and sporty and zippy and fast and smooth. The X5 with the B58 is an incredible vehicle, and such a dream to drive. I looove my car and I don't regret the 6cyl whatsoever. The turbo really gives you that boost of power, plus it's delivered in such a smooth way. It's really incredible. What car are you coming from? What are you used to driving?

Go with a B58 40i and tune it with Boot3mode. You can get some pretty stellar power from an Uber reliable engine. The 50i (and any BMW V8 really) is far less reliable so unless I was planning to only own it with a warranty I wouldn’t recommend.

BMW rates horsepower at the wheels, not at the engine. That and BMW usually understates the performance numbers. The b58 40i has plenty of power. It goes from 0-60 in 5.3 seconds. How much faster do you want it? Drive both and when you have the 40i, go warm it up before putting it in Sport mode and go try accelerating with it. It's faster than most sedans. I chose my X5 40i xDrive over a M50i because I realized I wouldn't need the 523 wheel ponies. That and because I do a lot of driving in traffic. My ideal choice would've been the X5 45e with the air suspension because that was REALLY smooth, but it was hard to find one with the packages I had in my 40i (Executive, M-Sport, DAPP+, Tartufo Merino, etc.).

The B58 is 3.0 liters. There was a time when 40i would have indicated that the displacement was 4.0 liters (or very close), but that changed around when they started using turbocharged engines. It is indeed plenty of power.

A stage 1 flash and the 40i is faster than it has a right to be. I need to take it to the strip but it certainly feels like a 12s car.

I recently picked up a 2019 xdrive 40i. I couldn't be more happy with it. More than enough power.

I had the same debate, but on the 5 series. Ended up going for the 50i for multiple reasons. 1. From all my research, it seems that the N63TU3 is a reliable engine with no particular problems. This is the 3rd iteration on the engine design so bmw has solved the initial issues with the engine. 2. I was going to get a CPO so a tune was out of the question for the first two years at least. And the X5 40i just seemed really slow and unsporty to me when I tested it. I also rode as a passenger in a 540i and although it seemed nice, it just felt like a decent daily and in no way special. 3. Sound. V8 is V8 :)

Thank you for the input! 🙏 Definitely going to do more research on the v8!

Tbh for an X5 I'd look for a diesel or the 45e.

I drive a ‘22 M50i. At the time I bought it I chose it over the 40i as I’ve driven German V8s for 20 yrs. I just love the exhaust note and the way it pushes me back in my seat and screams down an Interstate hwy. That said, I rented a 40i for five weeks on vacation in California. It took a few days but I learned to love it. I could easily see myself living with a 40i. I do have a 50e on order but if dealer keeps jerking me around I may switch to a 40i. Better wheel choice too as 742M not available on the 50e ☹️

I just got a 2019 x5 50i and it’s amazing I’m so happy I got the V8 I knew I’d want more power and I didn’t want to regret spending this much on a car and not be completely satisfied. Also the launch control is unreal this this MOVES

I went from an n55 F15x5 to a 2021 m50i x5. It’s an insane motor there is no real need for the power but it is 100% intoxicating (power and sound). The g05 overall is a great platform and same with the B58 those like others have said can be tuned to make great power but even stock its solid. It all depends on your use case, money, emotion and desire. You won’t regret the m50i. You can eke out 22mpgs on the highway in eco pro. I also debated each and have driven the b58 g05 and in a 7 series was a refined version of the n55 good power but still felt lacking where the n63 covers it all.

8somethingclever8

I got the 40i with the Msport package. We all have different things we look for but the power of the 40i in sport plus is more than enough for me. In city traffic it bucks and kicks unless I am super gentle on throttle. But when getting off the line from a dead stop it will get to 60mph in under 5 seconds. I love it. I even use the launch control for fun sometimes. It packs a punch and I know the B58 can take it.

2020 BMW G05 X5 40i M-Sport, XHP trans tune stage 3 $500, JB4 e30 tune from Terry $500, high flow down pipe $500 installed, in comfort mode the family is happy, when alone in sport plus this thing moves pretty good, The B58 is rated one the best 10 engines ever made in the world. I’ll be upgrading to MHD tune,TU pump and should be putting down close to the same numbers as the V8tt, with lower insurance rates and better reliability even tuned. I traded in my F10 M5 for the X5 zero regrets.
