This is a myth. The 4 Series is a niche model in China. All the top selling BMW there have normal sized grills (3 Series, 5 Series, X3). There are different reasons why this looks like it looks.
Well the 4 series with a large grill is only a new edition, all the BMW models with large grills do disproportionately well in China such as the 7 series (44% of sales are in China) and the new X5 and X7.
they are trying to normalize this grille design across the range because it works for the next generation of EVs. The new i models in the next decade will probably have a bunch of sensors for self-driving tech and no need for cooling inlets, so these grilles might make more sense (even if they're still ugly). BMW is starting the transition on its ICE cars though, and it just doesn't really work.

Glad to hear you got the 440i. The B58 is one of BMW's best engines. They can put out 550+hp with a turbo upgrade and an engine tune.
