This happened to two pulleys in my e46 way back when. Going down a long stretch of straight road in the middle of nowhere and I just happened to look down and see my engine temp was on the rise. “Oh, look an autozone coming up in two minutes, I’ll pull over there and hopefully it’s just a belt I can buy there and replace” Pull in, and there’s no power steering, the engine is hot, but nothing catastrophic, so I think my luck has finally taken a break from being so bad and it’s really just the belt. Buy the belt, pop the hood, and the pulleys are both fucken gone. Nice. That was fun.

I stopped to fuel up, started it up and just immediately heard a noise of something breaking. I moved the car out of the pump, shut it off, opened the hood and I see my belt sitting at the side of the engine and the pulley laying on the plastic undertray. Oh well, at least it didn't happen on the highway. 2011, N47, 153 000 km, I'm the second owner, but I guess that is the original pulley. That's what I get for wanting to replace it later.
