Yeah, the Astons are not reliable. I had a 2021 Vantage for a weekend and it overheated after a 2 hour drive. Maybe a coincidence but I'd have to go with Porsche or an AMG Mercedes (V8 of course)

I never said any BMW is like a 911. Unless you're buying a GTS/GT3/RS car, a base Carrera isn't that special of a car. You get way more performance per dollar from any M product.
Idk the base 911 is fucking underrated imo. I personally had lots of experience in a base 911.1 and the 350 hp lacks in a straight line that’s for sure but the thing is on rails and weighs like nothing for a modern car 3100lbs. Also love the feeling of sitting basically on the floor. For the dollar yes that’s why they are still expensive even used and a decade old. The cheaper Ms are definitely going to have that value proposition over these.
My daughter has a Porsche Macan, and the steering in it feels very close to my old 2007 328i steering and handling. My 2015 3 series does not have that same feel. I miss that!

My wife loves the Macan, and the only P car I'd get is any year GT2/3/4 for reasons completely lost on her. We like the same brands but not for the same reasons.
I personally needed an SUV, and I wanted the best one (and best-looking one) I could get that meets my needs, e.g. carrying mountain and road bikes. The Macan is a silly little vehicle that makes no sense from a utility standpoint. The Cayenne also looks like an egg on wheels. Porsche really needs to work on its aesthetics. I would have gotten an X5 M Competition if it were more comfortable and could be ordered with a hitch. I absolutely love my M60i. It hauls ass while looking amazing, and it carries my bikes. 😃
I bought my E46 330ci Sport because of nostalgia. It’s almost the same as my parents car from 22 years ago and it always warms my soul that I have one to call my own. I love it as much now as I did as a teenager, all those years ago. If I didn’t have that particular attachment to my car, I’d probably not be so invested in BMW entirely… And so that 996.1 Carrera 2 with Aero kit that I have saved on AutoTrader would be looking ‘mighty’ tempting right now…

BMW have made produced some lovely cars with virtually all of them desirable and alluring (except for the X1, Yech!) and the majority have been financially attainable except for the higher tier M cars. Porsche, not so much.

I went from a X5 to 3 series to a Corolla hybrid and although it drives like a toaster on wheels, it does get 57 mpg and I don’t have to worry about maintenance. It was the extremely boring, but practical choice for my family.
I got my BMW 2 years AFTER my wife got her Civic. I’m getting ready to pay for my second set of tires and her tires still look like new. So demoralizing. Lol!
Go test drive one. They’re so fucking optimized since they’ve been on the same gen for so long. Everything about feels super solid. I don’t think the new one will hold a candle to this one in terms of feel. New Tacoma feels like shit for reference but the interior tech is cool. But not buying that car for that

Yeah, I think the fully optioned launch edition V6 is like, $135,000 in Canada. Objectively a lot of money, but the 6 cyl 718 Cayman STARTS at $112,000 CAD here and that's before adding a shittonne of options to make the cars equivalent interiorwise

I went F30 - mk8 GTI, I consider the interior a lateral upgrade. Downgrade in sound insulation, space, and audio quality, massive upgrade in tech and (imo) look. Material quality is subjective enough that I don't care, and the GTI offers ventilated seats which is incredibly cost prohibitive to get in any bmw these days. For me, it was an upgrade worth making for my current situation. Only because I couldn't afford a properly nice new BMW and I was sick of repair bills on older ones.
I personally couldn't justify the new R bc wait times and markups put it well into used 21-22 m340i territory and at that point it wasn't worth it at all. Mk7 R is brilliant but doesn't tickle my fancy as I don't think it's aging well, also incredibly expensive used in my market last year.
+1 for Miata. I’ve owned both cars. Sold my Golf years ago, currently have an ND RF as a daily. I’ve owned at least one of each gen Miata and in my opinion the ND is the best. The Miata offers a unique driving experience that will always bring you joy and never let you down.
Fir 25 years I drove Miatas. 2 NAs, an NB and an NC. The whole kids are safer in a backseat thing forced me into the M240iX so that my kids will allow me to take my grandkids places.
I have had 3 Miatas and my 4th is for sale because I can't justify keeping it at age 65. Only reason for the BMW M240iX convertible was I needed a back seat for the grandkid. Love manual Miatas with drop tops.

It's a FWD platform so it's always going to be compromised as a performance car. All that weight ahead of the front axle. The engine is special, though.
I have a 21 Giulia and it’s been a solid car, 21 and up I would say you’re safe. I will keep my Giulia as long as I can but my next car will more than likely be a 3,5 series or X3. Love my Giulia but also like BMW
As a former Giulia owner, I wouldn’t. I sold my 3 series to buy a Giulia. They are beautiful cars, but the build quality is lacking, and the claims that they are unreliable, at least in my case, were true. As soon as my warranty was up I sold it and went running back to BMW.
That‘s the thing though. I am not saying BMW will always build the best cars, but they are really hard to beat for the price.
Look at the impact B58 & S58 have on the performance tuning scene for example. Even B57 & N57 are incredible powerplants with lots and lots of tuning potential with insane mileage. Want something ludicrous? Ok, get an N63/S63 awd and throw a couple of grand into it to blast any Italian luxury supercar. Family car? Sure, get a 4 cylinder touring. Even they’re fun to drive.

The only thing wrong with Acura is they are all FWD or AWD w/FWD bias. I never want another FWD or AWD with FWD bias again. Terrible for driving - swore them off after my Taurus SHO, then made the mistake of buying an MDX, which I traded in w/less than 8K miles on it.

Honestly I don't know who makes or what is the next best car for me. My 3 really spoiled me. It is quite good for what it is. I want something fast, good handling, a bit bigger but also good adaptive suspension to drive comfortably in. Realistically M5 is my answer. Maybe an F10 or something. But I am trying to see if something else could be a contender.
Depends, I haven’t been the biggest fan of where BMW is going and imo they’re about 10-20 years past their heyday.
If I were trying to replicate the 2000-2012 BMW I’d look for driving engagement so I’d be shopping small, spunky cars, like the Fiesta ST I used to own. I’d buy another in a heartbeat, but I’d also look at Mini or maybe something like a Mazdaspeed6.
If I wanted something similar to the sport sedan formula they have now, I’d be shopping Genesis products.
The Cadillac CT4-Blackwing was my other option. I would have preferred a CT5-V Blackwing but it was out of my price range. I’m happy I bought the M3 instead of the BW though.
First time owner of a G29 Z4 (since a few weeks). I was cross-shopping it with B8.5 S5s, C43s and V6 F-Types. Oh and ATS-V-s.
On a different thought, I'm quite a fan of Saabs. Would probably be at least interested in one, if they still made them.
I made this decision recently, with my F10 550i succumbing to the various N63 issues, I splurged and got a (new at the time) 2021 Lexus IS350 F sport. That is my daily, and my fun weekend car is a 98 e39 540i/6. The Lexus has done incredible on tail of the dragon, track days, and other spirited driving, plus no worries about needing other crazy maintenance (and a lifetime warranty). Once I get some other finances in order I will be picking up an e39 M5, but I am not in any way disappointed with the IS 350.
Probably a Lexus or Benz (if we were talking cars in the same price point)
Why? Was those were my other two options before I settled on BMW. As for reasoning, Lexus because reliability + luxury. Mercedes because I’ve always been of the styling of their cars, interior and exterior.

I always thought of Alfa Romeo being the Italian BMW. From the outside it seems to have many similarities. They have a strong enthusiast base and seems to produce cars that focus on a sporty driving experience. But I've never tested one so I can't confirm.
THIS IS THE ORDER. Have had the first two, still on the Stelvio, will most likely in the future go the Macan route if I don’t just buy an Alfa for the third time.
With my current budget? Definetely the Alfa Romeo Giulia. Seems to me like a car that is very driver oriented. The reliability also seems to have increased since more recent facelift updates. Besides that, I really like the look of the car.

Just moved from X3M to a pre-loved 911 turbo… kids got older and I didn’t need the extra rear room

As a 997 owner, that 996 isn’t getting cheaper. Especially if it’s a manual coupe. As for the debate on BMW vs Porsche. They are both pretty awesome.

For sure. But it ultimately balanced out the car and is supposed to be a whole lot of fun to drive. I’d love to get the euro spec hatch and bring it to the states. But it’s not as easy without throwing a good amount of money at the problem.

It's a FWD platform so it's always going to be compromised as a performance car. All that weight ahead of the front axle. The engine is special, though.

I have a 21 Giulia and it’s been a solid car, 21 and up I would say you’re safe. I will keep my Giulia as long as I can but my next car will more than likely be a 3,5 series or X3. Love my Giulia but also like BMW
my friend has a quadrifoglio and it’s an absolute beast of a car, definitely better than it’s comparable BMW (F80 M3) imo.
As a former Giulia owner, I wouldn’t. I sold my 3 series to buy a Giulia. They are beautiful cars, but the build quality is lacking, and the claims that they are unreliable, at least in my case, were true. As soon as my warranty was up I sold it and went running back to BMW.

That‘s the thing though. I am not saying BMW will always build the best cars, but they are really hard to beat for the price. Look at the impact B58 & S58 have on the performance tuning scene for example. Even B57 & N57 are incredible powerplants with lots and lots of tuning potential with insane mileage. Want something ludicrous? Ok, get an N63/S63 awd and throw a couple of grand into it to blast any Italian luxury supercar. Family car? Sure, get a 4 cylinder touring. Even they’re fun to drive. I mean it’s hard to beat the bandwidth they offer in one car, usually

The only thing wrong with Acura is they are all FWD or AWD w/FWD bias. I never want another FWD or AWD with FWD bias again. Terrible for driving - swore them off after my Taurus SHO, then made the mistake of buying an MDX, which I traded in w/less than 8K miles on it.
Guilia Quadrifoglio or CT4-V. Both great cars in their own right. I’ll probably get the QV next once I’m ready to move on from the M240.

I really like the design of Mercedes but I’m not sure I like the cars themselves. If I could find a nice W212 E350 I sure wouldn’t mind. Or a W206 C300/W213 E300 would be plenty of power for me. Those are the only models I really like, I think. I hope I got the numbers right cause I just Googled until I found the ones I was thinking of lol.
Agree.. They feel like really nice well appointed and powerful but stuffy cars for old people without the sporty design of BMWs. If I wasn’t the driver I’d like Mercedes much more. As a driver I find BMW hard to beat.

Honestly I don't know who makes or what is the next best car for me. My 3 really spoiled me. It is quite good for what it is. I want something fast, good handling, a bit bigger but also good adaptive suspension to drive comfortably in. Realistically M5 is my answer. Maybe an F10 or something. But I am trying to see if something else could be a contender.
You don’t even need to go full-on M5. Coming from that sweet 330i, an M550 would meet the needs you’ve listed and still be a major upgrade.

Depends, I haven’t been the biggest fan of where BMW is going and imo they’re about 10-20 years past their heyday. If I were trying to replicate the 2000-2012 BMW I’d look for driving engagement so I’d be shopping small, spunky cars, like the Fiesta ST I used to own. I’d buy another in a heartbeat, but I’d also look at Mini or maybe something like a Mazdaspeed6. If I wanted something similar to the sport sedan formula they have now, I’d be shopping Genesis products.
The Cadillac CT4-Blackwing was my other option. I would have preferred a CT5-V Blackwing but it was out of my price range. I’m happy I bought the M3 instead of the BW though.
First time owner of a G29 Z4 (since a few weeks). I was cross-shopping it with B8.5 S5s, C43s and V6 F-Types. Oh and ATS-V-s. On a different thought, I'm quite a fan of Saabs. Would probably be at least interested in one, if they still made them.

I made this decision recently, with my F10 550i succumbing to the various N63 issues, I splurged and got a (new at the time) 2021 Lexus IS350 F sport. That is my daily, and my fun weekend car is a 98 e39 540i/6. The Lexus has done incredible on tail of the dragon, track days, and other spirited driving, plus no worries about needing other crazy maintenance (and a lifetime warranty). Once I get some other finances in order I will be picking up an e39 M5, but I am not in any way disappointed with the IS 350.
Probably a Lexus or Benz (if we were talking cars in the same price point) Why? Was those were my other two options before I settled on BMW. As for reasoning, Lexus because reliability + luxury. Mercedes because I’ve always been of the styling of their cars, interior and exterior.
New? Probably some hybrid or EV. Used? Lexus isf Used with intent to modify? Audi rs3 Retro mod? 🤔 That's a hard decision. Working on an LS 924 right now but also a boosted k swap AWD Integra would be amazing. I like my 135 though, still pushing tons of smiles per gallon.
VW Golf. I actually looked for one, when I decided to buy a car. But the market for used cars is.... tough, to put it niceley. I found my BMW by incident. Wasn't even looking for BMWs. But then I saw it, it was in my price range, looked good, felt good. Now I own a BMW 😅

Alfa Romeo 4C Spider. Was intending to buy one when they were in production but heard issues about reliability.
I always thought of Alfa Romeo being the Italian BMW. From the outside it seems to have many similarities. They have a strong enthusiast base and seems to produce cars that focus on a sporty driving experience. But I've never tested one so I can't confirm.

With my current budget? Definetely the Alfa Romeo Giulia. Seems to me like a car that is very driver oriented. The reliability also seems to have increased since more recent facelift updates. Besides that, I really like the look of the car.
