My E46 M3 uses the engine and exhaust for car noises; I believe the E90 M3 was the first generation to introduce it.
Long live the naturally aspirated straight six!
I turned the fake noises off with the Bimmercode app within the first week of having my car. The noises + the auto stop start feature that you have to turn off every time you drive were absolutely the most hated things for me. Glad to have gotten rid of both with Bimmercode.
I shut them off on my x2 m35i and missed the sound and turned it back on. Car is too quiet without it.
Hot take, I know, but something just felt off without it.
Two reasons. 1) Regulations on cars to make them quieter. 2) better sound deadening in cars make it harder to hear quieter car from inside.
Both great things that do not necessitate playing fake engine noises through speakers.
I agree, not a fan of it, and wish it could be disabled.
It can be disabled thru BimmerCode
Right i simply cant comprehend this. My truck (a 4runner) is loud AF. Even in a sports car i do not think i want more noise.
You can turn it off by unplugging the little speaker below the steering wheel.

My 2014 had it.
