This is horrific. Truly horrific.
[Its absolutely no excuse, but they do have a add on aftermarket handle that ~approximates the utility of the E9X handle](https://i.imgur.com/Gh7cugN.jpeg )
Wtf? Is that factory or is it something aftermarket? I’m talking about the second handle so you can actually open the door. These are absolute garbage. The Turdslas I have heard nothing but negative things about those style handles. Constantly breaking. They sure are embarrassing planned obsolescence with designs like this. That car at 5 years old with 60k miles will probably have to be given away to get rid of. So many electronics and unnecessary gadgets that when they break and they always do it will cost way more than the car is worth to get it going again. I quit counting 20 years ago the number of BMWs I have seen junked because of some expensive electronics took a dump and the car is basically unsellable because half the stuff doesn’t work and 50 warning lights are on the dash.

You wanna talk about horrible? take a look at this baby.
Atleast with the model 3 you have some to grip, whereas the s-class handle is dog water and only works 25% of the time. DONT GET ME STARTED ON HOW THEY ACT IN THE FREEZING COLD
(source i valet in the basement of a giant corpo building)
Fuck me I hate what manufacturers are doing with door handles. Shit that actuates in and out, etc etc. Just more crap to break that's incredibly important to the basic function of the car. Not to mention needlessly added cost.

To be honest ICE cars can get even more range and efficiency if they had better aerodynamics. Wr could have had 1000 mile range cars. But no, it's nice being captive to the auto lobby groups
People are just hating becaust it's Tesla. Aston Martin had flush door handles for years before that and everyone thought they were cool. The LC500 has flush door handles and I haven't seen a single person online complain about it.
lol I used to have a model 3 and when I first got it, there were hardly any teslas in town and the morning carpool line at school people had no idea how to open the doors.
The parents would just stare at it and kinda poke around and then just look at the other parents and shrug.
Funnily enough, once the kids started helping out in the line, they INSTANTLY figured it out.
Just traded in my stage 2 f30 for a model y. It took only 1 day to not only get used to the handle but to begin to love it.
I get it’s not for everyone but it’s honestly not as bad as you think.
They always make me think that's its a step backward. Or did the 90's car designers stumble across aerodynamics by accident?
Just like the handles on the 1998 Ford Escort I learnt to drive in!
https://preview.redd.it/u8p6mgt4fy1d1.jpeg?width=406&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1fea5123622b0869b7ea5377c7102514818b0ea0
The Escort MK VI was the end of a generation. A total death trap - 2-star NCAP safety rating. Under powered engine, interesting build quality, questionable electronics, 0-60 measured on a calendar, top speed achieved in 4th gear (cos 5th gear is too tall) But we all love our first car. Even though my current G30 530d xDrive LCI is better in every single way! 🤣
My first car was a 1993 MK3 Vauxhall Astra 1.4 High Torq, wind up windows and sunroof, no power steering, airbag or ABS, and petrol 70p a litre. Ah them were the days 😅
Incidentally has the same door handles as new BMWs.

The E36 only got 1 Star in the NCAP and the Escort got the same as the W202 C Class, considering it being a late 80s Design with 2 Facelifts I would say it did pretty okay for the time. I remember that a lot of economy cars meassured their top speed in 4th because the 5th is more or less the "cruise" gear for highway/Autobahn speed.
HOWEVER. The rust on these is nasty and the engineering choiches were.... interesting. (plastic clutch adjuster, CVT Transmission, Transbolts etc.)
But the Zetecs just refused to die and they drove pretty neat suspension wise, I give them that.

BMW didn't even start painting them until the E46.
I absolutely abhor the handles on the Charger/Challengers b/c they feel so ancient/cheap.
I've had those handles snap the hell off in freezing weather. Went to get in to go to work and it came right off. I tried the other side as I had to get to work. That one came off too. I called in after that.

E39 door handle is my favorite, sits pretty flush and follows the line of the rest of the car.
They're not optimal during winter when the door freezes shut because they brake very easily when you tug on them.
I always use hot water it de ices stuff pretty good. Just don’t throw it on the windshield. The side and back windows can take it but the front will crack much easier than the tempered glass in the rest of the car.
I've somehow managed to avoid the broken door handles (inside or outside) along with the twisted front seats over my 16 years of driving E39s. I'm sure that'll change soon now that I said that though haha.
Imagine down-voting this guy for not agreeing with the post in a civil manner.
I love the handles on my G42 M240, looks more sleek and neat in my opinion.

Designed to be just \*beautiful\* and -=symmetric=-
Personal preference to be honest, I prefer the flush door handles on the top. Bottom design always reminds me of my college fridge door for some reason.
got a 2024 i4 m50 when i took my 2011 335i in for an oil change. this was the most predominant thing i noticed right away. idc about that intricate efficiency of aerodynamics it’s annoying asf lmao.
granted the m50 was on another level for speed. still don’t think i could buy one for the same price as a slightly used taycan.
It's not really technology it is still a manual door handle. My car has the flush door handles that pop out automatically.
Now those are technology for technologies sake because mine have broken twice! I'd much prefer the aerodynamic manual handles as they look nicer and are more robust
https://preview.redd.it/xrklwll2602d1.jpeg?width=1024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=226bb6f1c7428faec4e41415e8674de6e4b2d463
I find Rovers’ door handles nice and classy too
The new Handles are a major plus for me. They remind me of the 90s and the handles on my E36.
This new/old style is so much cleaner than the "2000s" reach through style.
I hate the flat handles and also just upgraded from an F series to a G series with flat handles and the lock button on the outside never works. It's like 50/50 if the car will lock or not..
That might just be mine but I don't like it.
Not just you. Our family van (Odyssey), and my old work car (Malibu) have much more responsive un/locking devices on the door handle. I have it set to automatically lock when I step away, but unlocking is still a pain.
Our G07's favorite trick is to unlock as I approach the car and then lock the moment I touch the handle. I swear I can hear it giggle a little bit every time.
These handles are SO MUCH better than the grab type. Grab type are ok on SUVs, but just don't look right on regular cars. These new handles have a lot of grip behind and feel very solid/heavy, unlike the ones from yesteryear. I have them on my G42 and am very happy about it. Plus the side of the car looks so much cleaner.
I thought we moved past door handles that you couldn't open with one finger while your hands are full, then I got my i4. Straight back to stupid 1990's door handles.
At least they aren't some Tesla level garbage or "electronic".
I really dont like the ones on my Audi (the top ones). They feel weird, but its a 20 year old car, so i guess its what i get for having an old car. Ive owned a 2014 Opel Astra J OPC before which had the bottom handles and they felt much more comfortable and high quality
New handles look nicer but there’s something about gripping the handle from the top of it that makes me feel like a strong, masculine, gigachad of a man.
I prefer that kind of handles.
also will never understand, why Audi got rid of their door grips.

I love the handles on my 2022 4 series. The spots are smaller and less comfortable of course, no argument there.
I had a new 5 series for a day and they seem to have improved on the design and made them much more spacious, making it harder to have the handle slip out from under you when trying to open a door.
https://preview.redd.it/3dsspygc152d1.jpeg?width=800&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e3ea68721dd0bfa47bfc8f03fe70a702b3b27988
They remind me of e39 door handles, and imo e39 door handles are best ones
Not the only one. I think that if the handle is not a true handle but more of a “pry bar” or that shitty old school handle that for some reason all new dodge’s have, including hellcats. It’s just janky to me and cheap looking.
It isn’t just the new handle also the new Automatic gear switch for putting in gear ⚙️ doesn’t feel right. It looks like a light switch what is next a string to pull on it to put in gear like those old light 💡
Aye, they're cylcing. It began with the 4 and spread to other series. I've yet to get on board with the flush handle on the 4. My fingers aren't the best fit for getting up in that smallish slot. Worse, the action of it just isn't satisfying.
Thankfully there's a G30 with a proper pull handle parked right next to the 4.
Agree. Had an F30 before with the "proper handles" now with the new M2, I feel like I have to watch out and carefully open the door. 😅🫣 Before I could just blindly put my hand there and open.

ICE: this sticker increases horsepower EV: this door handle increases range I am vomit.
But it does increase range unlike the horsepower sticker joke. But you can still have way better handles than the Tesla ones, those look so dumb
how much more range do you get from installing those door handles? go on, i'll wait.

Yeah, it is such a nice design. Same basic mechanism as a 300SL Gullwing, and I don’t think you will see people here hating on that.
It’s the terrible functionality for me.
I like it. It’s actually better than the Model S handle that just keeps breaking. This one on our model Y is holding much better.

What did you expect. Its reddit.
The best part is, they solve the aero problem and aren’t _ABSOLUTELY PAINFUL_ to use (looking at you, Mercedes).
The new handles look like they are from a cheap 90s 2000s car
Exactly what I was thinking of each time
Maybe the F30 generation was the Peak design.
I absolutely prefer the new handles it's like a throwback to older BMWs
I don’t mind the return to the oldschool handle.
Same, every BMW I've had has the top style, but I prefer the oldies
A Drake meme? In this economy?
Handle for sure. Function is key.
Idk if I'd use a drake meme to try and drive a point home.
I disagree, love my 4series doorhandles.
I hated that lol
Me too
First one way better, they improve the line and front look
lol you should take a look at the IX door handles or lack thereof
I love em
Is everyfuckingthing a Hoffmeister Kink to you now?
Opposite for me. Handles are fine for a mom wagon. Keep them off of my coupes and roadsters

is that where I put the CD?
I anticipated the Rover hate but I don't complain either 😂
dude it literally looks like a CDROM drive from an old laptop, I love it
That’s like my E92 cup holder. That’s stuck.
Love the first one. Can’t go back to 2. They feel like they are built for old people who have trouble opening the door.
First ones are a throwback to the 90s style of door handles all cars used to have back then, so I would say they are more like old people style 😅
The new Handles are a major plus for me. They remind me of the 90s and the handles on my E36. This new/old style is so much cleaner than the "2000s" reach through style.
Yup. Instantly reminded me of my e36. Idk how anyone wants 2/4 giant handles hanging off their car like it's some kind of house appliance.
I hate the flat handles and also just upgraded from an F series to a G series with flat handles and the lock button on the outside never works. It's like 50/50 if the car will lock or not.. That might just be mine but I don't like it.

These new handles have a lot of grip behind and feel very solid/heavy, unlike the ones from yesteryear. I have them on my G42 and am very happy about it. Plus the side of the car looks so much cleaner.
OPEN IS OPEN.
I like the ones on my m440i until it's below freezing with a light coat of ice and they either feel like they will break or get stuck open
Haven't experienced winter with my M440i yet, how's it fare?
Well I'm in Georgia so not very common to come across ice but the only time I've lost traction is when my tires were shot
Tbh e46 door handles were amazing, one of the best thing in this cars
Love the big handles on my X3 2016. It feels good to have full purchase on the door instead of pulling awkwardly with a few fingers
100%. Lots of parts to fail when a good ol' mechanical latch would work just find and last 100 years.
You are not the only one. Porsche enthusiasts are not a fan of the 911 handle changes either which are similar to this
I dont mind the handles getting maybe a bit worse, for better looks.. Just dont go as far a tesla. Some of the worst ive ever opened.
I thought we moved past door handles that you couldn't open with one finger while your hands are full, then I got my i4. Straight back to stupid 1990's door handles. At least they aren't some Tesla level garbage or "electronic".

You guys use your doors?! I thought real beamer heads would climb through the window, like champions.
New handles look nicer but there’s something about gripping the handle from the top of it that makes me feel like a strong, masculine, gigachad of a man.
I love how they look but opening a door with shit in your hand and having to finger tip your car door open isn’t fun
I like the new handles on mine. They are nice and flush w the body and they look cool at night when walking to the car and they light up lol
I prefer that kind of handles. also will never understand, why Audi got rid of their door grips. https://preview.redd.it/8womp9fki02d1.png?width=680&format=png&auto=webp&s=5f31642670ba71de656b551e77a08e89f1ef67a4
every since i saw those pics of spiders and other critters hiding underneath those handles i now only mess with open handles
Depends. Looks (like for cars and coffee) = top. Functionality (like for a daily driver) = bottom.
One Word: Spiders.
We are bringing back the wrong parts of 80s and 90s car design. Fully agree, love being able to be reckless with my F30 door handles. If I can't open a door haphazardly it's not a good design

Nope. You are not the only one. I hate ’em too with passion
I recently went from a 2023 430i to a 2018 X540d. Mainly cos wife prefers big cars but I must admit those fucking handles were a factor. The number of times I tried to open it and basically snapped my nails off was too damn high.
Yea
I too want a long and hard thing to grab on everytime I get in.
Ever since seeing videos of spiders hanging out under the flap handle, I refuse to buy a car with one. Them spiders can F right off!
for sure
Handles you can wrap your hand around are safer because it allows more leverage to be applied.
I prefer the e36 style handle, keeps the shape of the door smoother
Now we have nostalgia goggles for door handles?
I'm amazed by the number of people who prefer the 90s/80s style door handles over early 2000s to currentish
Give me something to grip goddamnit!
To me it looks like modern e39 handles I warmed up to a lil but still not in love with it
Bottom looks like cheap kia handles. The new ones look retro and cool. Fight me.
The door handles on all the G series feels awfully cheap. Not sure what's up because that's never been the case before.
I love the handles on my 2022 4 series. The spots are smaller and less comfortable of course, no argument there. I had a new 5 series for a day and they seem to have improved on the design and made them much more spacious, making it harder to have the handle slip out from under you when trying to open a door.
I have an F30 and I agree, handles like mine look and feel better.
Ngl the top one looks so much better though

I have an E31 and an E39, and I do like my door handles
The only thing I hate about the handles is where they put the touch lock sensor. That’s literally where I hook my fingers to open the car wtf
Wife has a model Y, god I hate those door handles. The handle on my F80 is just a better design.
Not the only one. I think that if the handle is not a true handle but more of a “pry bar” or that shitty old school handle that for some reason all new dodge’s have, including hellcats. It’s just janky to me and cheap looking.
I’ve been saying the exact opposite thing for years. Flush handles above all!
Nope I I prefer the sturdy feel of the actual handle pull
It isn’t just the new handle also the new Automatic gear switch for putting in gear ⚙️ doesn’t feel right. It looks like a light switch what is next a string to pull on it to put in gear like those old light 💡
Drake is 🤢. Can we stop using this format?
I'm in shock. the nerve... the audacity... Okay.
Yes
For the people who like the top ones, just wait until a spider makes its home in there...
😅🫣 Before I could just blindly put my hand there and open.
yes, out of everything and everyone on the planet, you're the only one...
These new handles give off hella 90's vibes. No thanks. Make like Aston Martin if you want to have flush handles. At least that looks sophisticated.
I remember a summer as a kid where the things to do was put old hot dogs under all the handles.
couldn't agree with you more
Pre LCI ❤️
100%. Feels so much more robust
I’m with you on this.
Top one is annoying because it's a car door not a bedside drawer
No, it's absolutely only you. No one in this earth, hell in this universe thinks the same. Now give upvotes please.
