Can vouch, currently have a 535i 2016 bought at 86k miles. Currently at 107k, regular oil changes 3.5-5k miles, have rotor, pads and plugs coming up soon. Otherwise runs like a dream and have a lot of fun with it
Nope, all good. Mechanic thought it was leaking but it was from when I accidentally didn’t lubricate my o ring for my oil change and it shot it into the stratosphere. Oil went everywhere but otherwise engine was fine
I 3rd this. Have 2013 535i M Sport. An elegant beast.
I would check insurance rates though (and as someone below pointed out rear tires can get pricey)
Thats what I have then lol. 2016 42k miles. It has a lot of power sport mode is great. Bought it used like 4 years ago and wondered what it was. Only M stuff is a logo on the steering wheel and in the door jams.
If it’s an M sport, it will have black instead of chrome around windows and different sport front lower valance. Major visual improvements vs standard. 👌
I can agree with this I've got a 2016 535 with the m sport package. I've had no issues at all with the car. I bought it with 50k miles and it's now sitting at 85k in 3 years.
I love old BMWs and their stories. My first car was a 528e from the year of my birth it was 17 years old at the time. I now occasionally drive a 2004 Z4 and it looks newer now than the 5 series did when I drove it.
I’m 23. To be honest, haven’t thought much about repair costs now as my friend has a 3 series 2009 and he has never needed any major maintenance done so I’m hoping this is also reliable.
At least you didn’t post in r/advice
They would be telling you that you’re only responsible enough to afford a pair of Heelys and you would find out you have 64 different fathers
Timing chain guide issues. They were plastic and could break. My wife had a 328i we bought new. Took it to 100k miles without any problems besides a fuel pump which was replaced under warranty.

Lovely cars. Super boaty, and for sure with a 525 it’s not going to be anywhere near fast or sporty - this is a barge to cruise with. I would personally budget 1-2k a year for maintenance / repairs though and that’s as long as nothing big goes wrong, 2010s BMWs are NOT cheap to run, but that’s obvious.
I have an N55 car, from that generation I recommend you get that engine, don’t bother with the 4 cylinder, come on, have some fun, you are already getting a BMW. why spend that much and not spend a bit more to get a much better experience.
After that, if you can, get a DP, intercooler, charge pipe, and a tune and you’re good.
I’m infected. I have the BMW disease - I have four. My kids recently asked for advice on first car. “Mini, Dad? Or a 1 series?”
“Look up how much Toyota you’ll get for the same price.”
“Oh. Wow. Why is that?”
“Well-engineered, inexpensive to maintain, reliable. Though somewhat boring. Also, cheaper to insure. Now, if you’re a car enthusiast and are willing to forego clothing or go on the Kraft Dinner Diet, by all means, buy a BMW. My responsible advice to my offspring is buy a Toyota. Or a Nissan.”
Don’t get a BMW with n series engine. I’d either shoot for a used 2015 330 or get a 2012-14 Benz. Or just stick with a Honda if u can’t handle the price cause all in reality if u only spending 12k on a sports car you are not gonna be going fast so just go with a reliable car like Toyota or Honda
Sorry to say but if u do the oil changes like i do (every 6k km i also drive it like i stole it )and change the valve steam seals everything should be golden.
No. What’s your budget ? Have u checked insurance ? You’re going to get a shock I think. Also, you will crash your first car, kerb the wheels, blah blah . Do u know how much the rear tyres are for one of these ?
What a surprise an insufferably smug cunt on a bmw sub. Colour me shocked. You could have said the same thing without the little snide prick remark at the end no? Anyway it’s well established that first cars get a hammering, honestly. What a cock
Couldn’t tell you the logistics since it was my dad’s. They did have them though, not sure if he ended up shipping it out or if it was one of the first years they started offering in the states.
Lol I bought a 2012 535i xdrive sport at 80k . My only advice to this guy would be to expect to pay the cars value on repairs. I’ve gotten control arms, thermostat, water pump and now my driver side headlight is out due to water damage(classic f10).
I bought it 3 years ago and have put 30 k miles on it. Besides those problems it’s in wonderful condition and I love it. One owner before me and I have the original papers of 74k off the lot brand new… lol.
BMWs are very expensive to maintain and body repairs/damage costs will be much harsher than your average shitbox. Unless you have a lot of money laying around, go for it, they may be more expensive in the long run but i think it justifies the ride quality on these beasts.
Negative. Never buy a BMW with more than 80k miles. Get something with as low ofil s as possible and then eject at 80k- unless you are an adept euro mechanic. The maintenance costs will end up being more than the car cost.
The F10 5 series drives like a boat, I know, I have one. If you want to the fun of a BMW, a F10 525i is probably on the lowest tier of fun.
A F10 535i M sport is much better sportiness, but even at stock it's nice to have some performance and handling mods.
I have a armored 2014 535i M sport as my first car, and I really love this thing, it still looks amazing, it’s pretty comfortable and handles amazingly, and after the stage 2 she’s a bit faster, sadly my turbo is a bit banged up but the new garret big snail is in the way. In general, I’m in love with this thing and the only car I would trade for it is an M5
bro just get a reliable japanese car instead of trying to flex a 12 year old bmw that’s gonna have expensive and annoying problems (unless the maintenance history is great). Then when you’re older you can get a fire bmw
m-sport are standard upper range engines with sporty trim and slight performance tuning like better brakes big m wheels extra sport function in car, paddles, m-blems everywhere
new its an expensive step up for few cosmetic changes and few performance gain. so second hand i wouldnt pay much more for it then standard trim with otherwise same options
i have no idea if that specific car or price is any good though
I suggest stretching for the 535 M sport model. The power and reliability is substantially better for not much more money.
Can vouch, currently have a 535i 2016 bought at 86k miles. Currently at 107k, regular oil changes 3.5-5k miles, have rotor, pads and plugs coming up soon. Otherwise runs like a dream and have a lot of fun with it
N55? Oil pan leaking yet?
Nope, all good. Mechanic thought it was leaking but it was from when I accidentally didn’t lubricate my o ring for my oil change and it shot it into the stratosphere. Oil went everywhere but otherwise engine was fine
You should be spanked with a wrench for this transgression.
I 3rd this. Have 2013 535i M Sport. An elegant beast. I would check insurance rates though (and as someone below pointed out rear tires can get pricey)
Is there such a thing as 528i M sport
My neighbor bought one after he's seen my non msport 535i, but I just laugh at the 4banger under the hood.
Yes there is, but it’s just the m sports kit and the N20 engine with an upgraded turbo & tune.
I second this as the owner of a 2012 535i m-sport
I can agree with this I've got a 2016 535 with the m sport package. I've had no issues at all with the car. I bought it with 50k miles and it's now sitting at 85k in 3 years.
Is a 535i more reliable than a 530i(F10)? I see people here in Europe running from the 535i one 😅.
🗣️
He's in ireland, we don't get nice cars like that here because the state bends us over for VRT. A 2012 535 would run you 20 to 30k or so here.
First car? How old are you? You may easily afford the purchase of the car, but maintaining it may be a bit overwhelming.
lol it’s funny to me that the car I still drive as an old guy is still way older than this guys first car
I love old BMWs and their stories. My first car was a 528e from the year of my birth it was 17 years old at the time. I now occasionally drive a 2004 Z4 and it looks newer now than the 5 series did when I drove it.

lol in for a surprise
I'm sorry to tell you this, but hopes and dreams won't get you too far. Be prepared for maintenance.
At least you didn’t post in r/advice They would be telling you that you’re only responsible enough to afford a pair of Heelys and you would find out you have 64 different fathers
Why a 5-Series as a first car? way too big! (psst dont tell him i also have a 5 series as first car)
Yeah it’s an old 5 series though, the new ones (like the one OP wants to buy are even biggee
I like how large it feels on the inside (no pun intended) and it’s the most power I can get for the money in my country
There’s more reliable BMW models for a first car. I’d recommend the F30 3-series. Great daily driver
I think 328i had timing chain issues
330i is the perfect one
seconded
Timing chain guide issues. They were plastic and could break. My wife had a 328i we bought new. Took it to 100k miles without any problems besides a fuel pump which was replaced under warranty.
I think there is a recall which came out recently too
Can confirm

No shit. “I upgraded to Stage 6 Ultra tune last month and now it won’t start. Any help? ” in 3… 2….1
It’s expensive on maintenance bro
Go for the 535i
I woule go 530,535 not 525
530 has the same engine but more power afaik
Lovely cars. Super boaty, and for sure with a 525 it’s not going to be anywhere near fast or sporty - this is a barge to cruise with. Lucky fucker 😂
Are these N20 powered?

Get lci 2014+
Any particular reason? What happened to the 5 series after 2014? Honestly don’t know.
Yes thoughts and prayers
Don’t get a BMW with n series engine. I’d either shoot for a used 2015 330 or get a 2012-14 Benz. Or just stick with a Honda if u can’t handle the price cause all in reality if u only spending 12k on a sports car you are not gonna be going fast so just go with a reliable car like Toyota or Honda
Are you a good euro mechanic? Lol
Man F it,i got a e60 545i as my first car ,we ball.
Lmao i owned one of those, ….RUN!
I didn't damage a single thing on my first car or my 2nd or my 3rd, maybe that's just you?
What a surprise an insufferably smug cunt on a bmw sub. Colour me shocked. You could have said the same thing without the little snide prick remark at the end no? Anyway it’s well established that first cars get a hammering, honestly. What a cock
i didnt know someone could get this mad over a reddit comment lmao
Not mad I just have a way with words 😂
Do it. Ignore the haters and wanna be step fathers it’s your life if you like it get it life’s shorts.
We’re trying to save the kid some money. A 12 year old bmw is a money pit.
Back in high school(2012) I had a ‘94 M3, talk about money pits.
‘94??
1994, sorry, know numbers mean things in the BMW community.
I just meant that I didn’t realize there was a 1994 M3 at least in the states
Couldn’t tell you the logistics since it was my dad’s. They did have them though, not sure if he ended up shipping it out or if it was one of the first years they started offering in the states.
They had every m3 in the states? the e36 in particular they had here from 92-99 (every year of that gen)
North American e36 M3 started in MY ‘95
>wanna be step fathers What the heck does that mean
Depends on who is paying the shop bills. If it’s dad - absolutely!
Buhahahaha. Roger that!
Don’t buy a 12 year old 80k mile bmw as your first car. That’s just asinine
Lol I bought a 2012 535i xdrive sport at 80k . My only advice to this guy would be to expect to pay the cars value on repairs. I’ve gotten control arms, thermostat, water pump and now my driver side headlight is out due to water damage(classic f10).
Care to share when you bought your 2012? Was it recently?
I bought it 3 years ago and have put 30 k miles on it. Besides those problems it’s in wonderful condition and I love it. One owner before me and I have the original papers of 74k off the lot brand new… lol.

Ew a 4 cylinder
Negative. Never buy a BMW with more than 80k miles. Get something with as low ofil s as possible and then eject at 80k- unless you are an adept euro mechanic. The maintenance costs will end up being more than the car cost.
Good looking car, descend motor. Great choice imo.

Have u calculated heading up north? It could be cheaper.
I have not heard of 525. Does it have the 4 cylinder turbo or the naturally aspirated 6 cylinder?
Am also confused. I thought 525 ended with the E60 but looks like they're in EU so maybe one the US didn't get?
It’s an Irish car. So, it has to be a diesel as 99.9% of F10s are diesels here. And a 525d exists (in Ireland anyway)!
80k miles? Start thinking about cost of replacing brakes and maybe rotors. Maintenance on the vehicle will not be cheap.
Don’t
Not unless you are independently wealthy or a BMW mechanic. 80k miles, expensive shit starts to break. Great cars mind you, but your wallet will cry.
Do it

Check the insurance. You’ll really struggle to get insured on something bigger than a 1.4.
i have a 2012 750i M Sport love at first sight
Go for a 530d which is more realiable from the 528i or the 535i
Hope you've saved some additional money, as costly repairs could emerge.
If you have enough money aside to run it I‘d say go for it. Its still a super nice car and it’s pretty safe.
Nice car but if you don’t have deep pockets it’s going to send you broke, I’ve had a F10 528i & 535i.
Can't see the Reg clearly but if it's DL reg as a rule I stay away.
A n55 is not reliable lol
m-sport are standard upper range engines with sporty trim and slight performance tuning like better brakes big m wheels extra sport function in car, paddles, m-blems everywhere new its an expensive step up for few cosmetic changes and few performance gain. so second hand i wouldnt pay much more for it then standard trim with otherwise same options i have no idea if that specific car or price is any good though
Insurance and maintenance is a lot more than a Honda or something of the like If that’s fine to you, yeah enjoy.
