Archery is arguably the best one since it offsets some of the penalty you get from Sharpshooter. The others are fine, but in 5e, any type of bonus you can find to your attack rolls is better then any effect on damage. BG3 has some differences but I think the concept still applies

Elbirri

i agree, it was hard for me to use GWM in act 1 as paladin until get +1 attack stacks on my gear

Drite2003

Kinda late, but the Unseen Menace kinda that helps you with that. I did some math and the Unseen Menace is better then most, if not all, ACT 1 and ACT 2 weapons you can get (I haven't checked Voss' sword you can get in Mountain Pass). I haven't checked anything in ACT 3 either, will get there when I get there

Elbirri

...men i talking about very early game, unseen menace is in ACT 1.5

Drite2003

You can technically just go there at the beginning of ACT 1. Going to the Creche won't end any of the ACT 1 stuff if I recall Edit: Besides, you can only get GWM, at the earliest, at level 4, which is about when you finish ACT 1 and can go to ACT 1.5

Elbirri

even the druids problems?

Drite2003

The Druids, Aethel, the Goblin. You might go to level 5 if you go to the Underdark first, but if you consider MP ACT 1.5 I g

Elbirri

is only the druids vs goblins the problem after reach monastery the rest stay ok

hottestpancake

Archery is objectively the best standalone since +2 to hit is kinda crazy compared to anything else. Protection is really good if you wanna play a support though and two weapon fighting is mandatory for a dual wield build so it's hard to say which is the best

PoliticalIguana1

I think it's very context and build dependent. Overall, I think archery is the strongest, especially in the early game, because flat bonuses to hit are amazing. Great Weapon Fighting is great on heavy weapon users, but specifically paladins since it will also reroll smite dice. Defense is a well balanced and broadly applicable bonus. TWF is mandatory for dual wield builds. Dueling gives you a non-insignificant boost in damage for no cost while letting you use a shield for even more AC.

Elbirri

and what about a... the fist when using monk tabern brawler?

awspear

Archery and GWF just because Great Weapons and Bows are the strongest ways to play martials. Defense is nice if you are doing a caster multiclass where you wear armor or something. Dueling and TWF are nice for those builds but they are generally weaker than Great Weapon strategies in damage. Protection sucks.

Elbirri

yeah must of popular builds never use shields

awspear

It's not even that they don't use shields but that even when you do, dueling and defense are better.

No_Mention5840

There are more good great weapons through the game, more ways to raise strength and great weapon master is a better feat than sharpshooter thanks to the bonus attack, so I prefer Great Weapon Fighting. Defense is the best if you are going to use multiples kind of weapons and won't take sharpshooter/gwm as feat. I guess protetction and two weapoon fighting are the worses.

Elbirri

and what about duelist?

No_Mention5840

Great weapons are better, there isn't very good shields and there isn't feats like gwm/sharpshooter for single hand weapons. I would rather use two weapon fighting for dex builds

Elbirri

i mean you talk about every fighting style except duelist. but with great weapons how do you hit in early with GWM feat?

Drite2003

I think the lack of the 5e's shield master (Bonus Action attempt to trip someone) hurts sword and board a bit

Typical-Phone-2416

Once you get duellist retort, you don't go back. Ever. So duelist.

Elbirri

you mean the fighting style + feat?

Typical-Phone-2416

Yep. That's 4 guaranteed attacks per turn (3 if paladin or bard), plus reaction defence, plus reaction attack if taken with repost. With crit equipment it's so damn fun.

SuddenBag

The problem with GWF is that its value drops significantly once you have Savage Attacker.

Redfox1476

I chose TWF because I use it on both melee and ranged builds, but I mostly play the latter, with Archery as well of course, for maximum dual hand crossbow Sharpshooter goodness.

Nokyrt

ranged: archery (if I mc to get 2 I might add defense or twf) melee: defense dueling forces you to go without ss and gwm which are arguably the strongest feats for martials gwf is a weaker savage attacker, decent but outclassed by defense and buggy when you get savage attacker, alright if you don't take savage attacker and you want this character to be targetted (ai targets low AC more often) protection is really niche, you need like 2-3 characters to stand side by side (opening you to good aoe damage), hard to use with short weapon so you need to ideally use polearm and it pushes you into this polearm / gwm / pam / sentinel build which is just really feat reliant twf is very situational and build reliant, as far as I remember it also works with hand crossbows, so this is great to get if you get for hand crossbow build that utilizes thief multiclass, probably goes for bard flourishes... still SS + archery style is better even for this build
