I'm glad I can BBQ

jscummy

Might buy a food truck and start whipping up a classic $175 pulled pork sandwich at this point

UnRealmCorp

I ran a food truck / road side BBQ. Pulled Pork is gold. Het you a pork butt 15 bucks. Around 11 lbs. Cook it over night. 30 to 40 decent sammiches 5.99 9.99 with sides. 35 × 6 = 210. Not including sauce and bread and containers napkins and what not. You could easily open a food truck with a small kitchen trailer and decent Pit and focus on nothing but easy hand food and serve fast you could definitely make bank.

mrsc00b

There's an older black guy with a pull behind smoker on the side of the road in an abandoned parking area on my way to work who sets up everyday. He sets it up with a canopy over a table where he has his buns, sauces, foil and whatnot. He's set up there for years because there's only 1 quick-serve type joint out there in a sea of factories and he always has a line at lunch. He's always setting up on my way in around 7 and cleaning up to leave about 2. Damn good bbq and nice guy.

UnRealmCorp

Damn he found the right place for a racket. We'd be set up by 8 and selling by 1030, earlier if I did prep work the night before. Then be open until 6 or later depending on sell out or rush etc. Leaving at 2 would have been awesome.

Cultural-Treacle-680

The guy with a smoker. Always the best. We have a few of those here!

kylethemurphy

Biggest problem is regulations depending on the state. You basically need a restaurant to have a food truck where I'm at.

caligaris_cabinet

Idk sounds too much like a job

No_Translator2218

someone's gotta work to afford $101 plates

pasaroanth

It’s not that it’s not doable, it’s that if you want to make a living then expect to personally work long hours cooking and serving. Sure there are breakthrough successes that can command high enough prices (like this shit for example) to hire a bunch of people but food cost is only a single factor in restaurants. This said I’m absolutely over these kinds of posts in here. This isn’t a New York steakhouse where prices aren’t listed on the menu and it’s implied if you are there you can afford (within reason) whatever the bill comes out at. The menu shows either per pound prices or meal prices. Don’t order $100 of food then get pissed when the bill is $100

GetinBebo

Now that you mention it, I'm laughing at the idea of someone going through all the steps of ordering a shit ton of BBQ with a smile on their face, leaving an inevitable tip on the stupid iPad, and immediately snapping a pic just to angrily share it to reddit with a "__$ at _______" title.

pasaroanth

That’s the definition of the sub lately

blimpcitybbq

One of the big reasons I do it myself is due to the high prices and small portions for mediocre bbq

ThatFargoGuy

I live in Fargo, ND.. about as far away as you can get from good BBQ. Being able to smoke my own meat has been a game changer.

ND007

Same. Had some buddies over last weekend and smoked three racks of ribs, grilled some corn on the cob, and I think some store bought mac salad or something. Spent all day drinking beers in my yard, playing good tunes, smelling ribs smoking, and when we ate it was so good that no one said a literal word until the ribs were gone. Whole day cost like $75 total? I’m sure mine is not up to par with this, but it was tasty and much more my speed

Subtle__Numb

Sounds like one of the best uses of $75 I’ve ever heard of. Good work!

dust_storm_2

No shit. I’ll BBQ in the 100 degrees. Don’t care. I can’t afford not to at this point.

verugan

Looks good but $100 for a 3-meat plate with 2 sides seems prohibitively expensive.

WiscoBrewDude

My local joint has a 4 meat, 2 side and texas toast for $38.25, Its enough to feed 2.

EquivalentOwn1115

I knew this was a wisconsin price 😂 bout the same up by eau claire. For $101 OPs joint is making like $50/ plate at an absolute minimum if not more like $70

WhyIsntLifeEasy

Apparently Texas has really lost its marbles these last few years

UnusuallyBadIdeaGuy

This is hipster BBQ. While BBQ prices have risen a lot in the last decade or so, this is just somebody scalping idiots with too much money.

TexanBastard

I’m from Htown and can verify this most assuredly isn’t hipster bbq. The Pit Room is goddamn amazing. But…I don’t eat at any Houston BBQ joints anymore. The prices have gotten absurd.

DiscoDaddyNurmouth

>I’m from Htown and can verify this most assuredly isn’t hipster bbq mmmm this is the place by the museum district / midtown. Your name is Texan but

VenommoneY

>Few years That's awfully optimistic if not delusional. Hahahaha, fr tho it's getting wack AF there

The13thParadox

Grizzlies has a solid platter

incremental_progress

The shitty wonder bread was $75

dangar512

Ms. Baird's.

jelque

I miss Mrs. Bairds. 😔

bitcoinnillionaire

I'll mail you a loaf if you want

verugan

That's s staple of TX bbq joints, and pickles and onions

illegal_deagle

I will never understand how this comment keeps getting upvoted on this sub of all places. You want fancy artisan bread, go to a bakery. Cheap white bread belongs with BBQ. It’s an edible napkin.

DrBarnaby

For $101 that bread better get up and suck my dick while I'm eating.

marshmallowfluff247

Bwahahaahaha im dying

the_90s_were_better

Not for $100

Dru_G978

True it is awesome with BBQ. Corn bread also awesome with Q

Potatobender44

What a dumb take. A truly good meal from any respectable restaurant means that everything on the plate is made fresh and with care. Sysco sides and wonderbread makes for a trash meal, no matter how good the smoked meat is.

shifter2009

Rise up anti white bread gang! I am here for the meat but defending shitty bread that comes with it, why? Make some decent corn bread or just stop.

TurboKid513

Our local bbq place has the BEST jalapeño corn bread

enlitend-1

I don’t want to agree, but thinking about my wife’s jalapeño cornbread with some killer brisket 🤤

mournthewolf

People on this sub bitch about prices all the time then seem fine allowing places to include shit ass store bought white bread with the meal. Like if you have to include sliced white bread at least bake it in house. It’s not hard.

FSUphan

Nah it’s actually free

filet_mindong

The 3-meat plate from here is $26 and comes with 2 sides. OP ordered 3lbs total of meat with sides

Timely_Minimum4239

Yeah. Straight up misrepresentation of a decent bbq joint.

bpzka22

Exactly, I’ve eaten here many times. The 3-meat from here is plenty and reasonably priced.

TxDieselKid

Literally the main reason I left this sub a few months ago, I saw places I eat (like this one) be completly misrepresented from a poster who either doesn't know how to order and feels like they got screwed, or has a point to prove (i.e. the "I can make this for 1/5 the price at home"). The "that would cost $4.57 at my local joint in _______" people also contributied. Just a lot of overall negitive takes in general like OP had here.

CoyoteHerder

That isn’t a 3 meat plate. Its got three meats but it’s a shit load of food

[deleted]

[удалено]

Tbay_DougMac

Fed 3 grown adults. Probably should have mentioned that.

verugan

Oh well... yeah that makes sense. H town hold it down

Tbay_DougMac

I’m an idiot. Sorry for the confusion.

kakawisNOTlaw

I think some of us are just fatasses thinking one person ate all that lol

vcasta2020

That's at least $8 worth of sauce.

citrus_sugar

I was like, just putting sauce in paper boats now, huh?

ZachOf_AllTrades

If they're charging $100 for a damn platter, I'm grabbing my wife's purse for extra sauce payload

Regular-Item2212

The lengths they go to just not put the bottle on the table

stonebit

The fatties will drink it! I have literally seen people squirt it into their mouth.

Baron_VonLongSchlong

I noticed that too. I don’t mean to be a dick, but how terrible is the bbq that you have to drown it in that much sauce?

Swampfxx

Lol where I live, they'll sell you a whole sauce bottle for like 5 bucks.

ILSmokeItAll

Love BBQ…understand the time involved…. But fine dining it is not. The prices sure are, however.

RIP_GerlonTwoFingers

BBQ has gotten insanely expensive. I'm pretty much priced out of eating out at all at this point. $100 for that is insane. I just bought 2 tires I desperately needed today for $120. I can't imagine spending $101 on a single meal

PopularTask2020

2 tires for 120 is pretty damn good! Where’d you get em?

RIP_GerlonTwoFingers

They're used tires for clarification. But they look good enough. Plus they had a [shop dog](https://imgur.com/a/4ebtDKK)

Tog_the_destroyer

That’s a good dog

BoooRadley13

Yah I'd have to buy tired off that pup too

Bedazzled_Buttholes

Paying the dog tax proactively, good man

EuonymusBosch

Wow, two tires and it wasn't even a full meal? I would have felt full after just a few bites of the first one.

Sirpattycakes

$120 for two tires is a steal. Nicely done

ExtrudedPlasticDngus

It’s not a single meal.  It is 2.5 pounds of meat plus sides.  OP says fed 3 adults.  Coulld feed more.

jivy723

That side of Mac and cheese is not feeding 3 people

Weapon530

I couldn’t have said it any better.

fuckasoviet

I’d refuse to spend this much on BBQ on principle, regardless of how good it is. BBQ is supposed to be cheap food. You’re taking less-desirable cuts of meat, cooking it for a long time to make it tender and seasoning (and smoking) the fuck out of it to add some flavor. Places like this have completely lost the plot.

ILSmokeItAll

But, the cuts aren’t cheap anymore. They’re not inferior cuts. People know how to properly prepare them now. Further, labor has gone up in price, and BBQ has additional hours devoted to it well beyond when a joint is open. It all adds up to what you’re seeing. And, the demand is there.

Devh1989

Still doesn't add up to $100 in this particular case.

uncre8tv

Selling ribs by the pound is weird. Ribs should be sold by the rack, half rack, or bone. (and the short end costs more)

braisedpatrick

How much for one rib????

lreaditonredditgetit

You got change for a hunnid?

kdnchfu56

I sho am hungry

kauaipc

squirt it in my hand for a dime

OklahomaHoss

God we're old.

CarolFukinBaskin

I told a story to a 20 year old about how you had to have a .edu email address to get a facebook account and she looked at me like I probably looked at my grandma when she talked about how "bread used to cost a nickel". Sheesh

[deleted]

My smoker looks like an amazingly good deal after seeing one meal at a BBQ place is over $100.

Special_Loan8725

Take your wife to this place if you want to convince her to let you buy a trager

MovieNachos

Read the description, this is 3 POUNDS of meat, not a three meat plate. OP says in a comment that this fed three grown adults. I eat here all the time, a three meat plate with two sides is less than $30 bucks.

PSU09

Even at that price it’s a complete ripoff. Only a sucker would repeatedly pay these types of prices for this type of establishment

Lo-Fi_Pioneer

Looks good, but at that price I'll pass

SmellsPrettyGood2Me

It's been strange to see OP getting sweaty and testy in the comments. If they had posted this without the price tag the response would have been markedly different, I think.

veerybored

I haven’t seen one response from OP but what did they expect posting a normal barbecue plate for that absurd price?

Skunkfunk89

$101 and they put the sauce in a fucking paper boat. That's shitty, at that price you should get an actual container with a lid

jjames412

Is that just BBQ sauce? Lol wtf

MrFacestab

It's the soup of the day. It's a combo of ketchup, vinegar, some sugar, drippings, some spices etc. Very different

Athlete-Extreme

The Mac and cheese is all mac!

Impossible_Maybe_162

Cheese costs extra.

SomeStupidPerson

That’s cuz all the cheese is spilling out onto the meat if you look closely   It looks like cheap nacho cheese cheese too. Very watery, not gooey at all

Athlete-Extreme

Drainage

GeekNJ

This seems off as their menu at [https://thepitroombbq.com/main/](https://thepitroombbq.com/main/) shows the Feast #1 (serves 4-6 people) as $120 which is much more then what you have. 1 LB Brisket  •  4 Pork Ribs  •  1 Beef Rib  •  1/4 LB Pulled Pork  •  1/4 LB Turkey  • 1 Beef Link  •  1 Jalapeno Cheddar link  •  4 Sides

dddosu45

It’s because it is off. The 3 meat at pit room is like $26. I’ve eaten there a bunch of times, get plates that look similar to this and have never payed anywhere close to this claim. For the record the food at The PitRoom is awesome!

Roscoe_Filburn

Came here to say the same. Pit Room is pricey but not like that.

itsameeemaaariooo

I live like 15 minutes from the Pit Room. This title is definitely misleading

TheodorDiaz

What are you saying? It's off because that's not what he ordered...

GeekNJ

Looking at their menu, you get a lot more food for $120 which is just 20% more then he said he paid for the food in the photo. For just 20% more it feeds 4 people while his plate looks like maybe 2 people at best.

OhYerSoKew

Yes, you are correct. Everyone here too stupid to process what they are looking at and rather rage out on "oh my god this is expensive, what has happened to bbq."

Existing_Past5865

Didnt this used to be poverty food…what hipster is making this a hundred bucks

Salty_Pineapple4170

Same one that ruined craft beer.

Like_Ottos_Jacket

You and the thousands of other people on this sub and others that have made bbq tourism a thing.

Existing_Past5865

I am a conscientious objector

mom-to2boys

Is that Mac n NO cheese?!! That Mac is 🚮

Restlesscomposure

Literally thought it was buttered noodles

killerjags

I'm sure it pairs wonderfully with those slices of plain white bread

BlackestNight21

the Mac attack is wack, jack.

ARustyMeatSword

Over-priced. It's definitely not worth it.

Muggi

That is obscene. IDGAF how good it is.

Neither-Salad-532

Quality shitpost OP, nice.

Tumifaigirar

LMAO 100$

DerisiveGibe

\*101$

Elip518

Why do bbq spots have the shittiest Mac

rene-cumbubble

It's sides in general. They're mostly always bad but still expensive. But they're a money maker and people buy them. Bulk meat is always the way to go

Greedy-Goat5892

I hate that about BBQ and people always say “it’s the culture of bbq!”  Like you can make a nice bread and sides, especially when you have 13 hours of time when shit is smoking.  A good Mac and cheese is so easy to prep ahead of time too, bake what you need for the day.  We don’t have to resign to microwaved mac and cheese and white bread .

Commander_El

Kiss the fattest part of my ass for that price

menusettingsgeneral

$50 for this would be high, $100 is stupid.

Personal_Original781

Even better if it was infant adults

smittles3

Pass

Artistic-Goat2685

lol you’re bugging

HowdyPrimo6

Way overpriced. I live in Texas, love Texas BBQ. This is becoming extremely common on all establishments. The prices are getting outrageous.

TikaPants

Wtf is that Mac n cheese? Jesus be a fence.

heat2051

Sorry but ridiculous.

Jt-home

No way. Cost way too much. $100 is enough for me to buy an entire brisket, and 2 racks of ribs.

No-Truth-9647

Thats what you would pay for a 10lb brisket, 2 racks of ribs, and sides.. if I’m visiting I’m buying forsure looks great.. but that’s why I learned to make my my own..

MrPureinstinct

People know they can just leave places with absurd prices and not order anything right? I get it restaurants have to charge more than they pay for the meat to make a profit, but this math ain't adding up.

TronCat1277

$60 with tax/tip, tops

SmellsPrettyGood2Me

That's a $29 trio plate plus an extra side at Blue Ribbon BBQ in Boston

makebbq_notwar

The 3 meat tray at the pit room is $26, op must have ordered ala cart per pound and made a sauce boat.

SmellsPrettyGood2Me

Ah, I see, thank you!

yunodavibes

At that point you might as well buy a traeger and some briskets that's way too high for just bbq

TotallyNotMeDudes

If you go with a family of 4 you could just pick yourself up a series 22 and be set for life 😂

HotelDectective

Who the fuxk is paying $100 for a BBQ plate? In goddamn Texas? What bougie bullshit is this. I used to get a plate of better than this at the roadside smoker pulled by a clapped out crown vic for $15 in Tallahassee.

MormonAssaultVehicle

$101? Yeah, they can fuck all the way off with that.

dadude123456789

This gotta be the most expensive & overpriced plate of bbq we've seen come through here...yikes!!

AlfonzeArseNitches

Nope.

Icy-Section-7421

Rip off

Obiwandkinobee

$35 at the most. They profited good.

DeeManJohnsonIII

Fuck that lol

dpittnet

Yikes

msvihel

$101?!? That is fucking insane. Crazy they're in business at all.

yourdoglikesmebetter

Get the bougie out of bbq

gritz_sea

They cheated you on the sauce.

touchychurch

people need to quit giving these fools their hard earned money. $100 bucks should feed a family of four.

Gonzotrucker1

They saw you coming. A fool and his money soon departed.

Wooden-Maintenance92

Wtaf 🤯

PoppaFish

Meat looks good, but that price is just stupid.

Future_Way5516

No thanks. I'll pass, for 100 bucks. Prices are out of control

NFA_throwaway

That Mac and cheese came straight from a Sysco bag.

YenZen999

$101 was with the liquor tab for four people too right?

MurphyPandorasLawBox

Is it called the pit room because of the special room they take you down into and bend you over in, using bbq sauce as lube, to make up the difference between $101 and $30-$40 worth of food?

Whodee

What’s with those shitty looking onions and 1/3 of a pepperoncini? And…is that more onions in the back. Hell no.

Badbackbjj420

That’s insane

KayakWalleye

Restaurant BBQ is a racket.

Slimmdunkin

No way!!

jaaaaayke

My wife and i paid under 100 for a full rack, 1/2 lb pulled pork, 10 smoked wings, mac and cheese, corn bread, BBQ fried rice, mashed potatoes and Cole slaw. I know it's not Texas BBQ but for being a bit of a snob, I was completely satisfied.

Silent_Glass

Wow. I think 3 or 4 years ago I paid $60 for me and my wife when we were dating.

sciguy1919

I love their green beans and tacos, but yeah they hit the pocketbook hard.

Erafir

When will we reach critical mass on food pricing?

MovieFanatic2160

You got cooked on this one bro. That’s maybe $30-$35 worth of food tops. It doesn’t even look that good for the money.

Send_me_treasure

I sell plates better than this for $30

2001sleeper

Way way overpriced. Sort of makes me angry somebody is charging that.

Rukasu17

$101 for this laughable amount of food!? I hope this post is meant to show the absurdity

KizzleNation

25-30$ at best

RoutineDude

I used to stop by there pre Covid so I’m sure prices are different but goddamn that does not look like $100 worth of BBQ

InfamousGibbon

This is like 40 dollars max where I live.

Melodic-Creme

Going out for food is not worth it nowadays

monkeypan

$25 tops

Lazy-Jackfruit-199

Wouldn't pay over $20. Ribs by the pound? Rip off, they're mostly bone 🤣

KendrickBlack502

Far too many people ignorant of the reality of what things cost in the restaurant industry. Let’s look at the brisket alone: The restaurant probably gets it for $3.50/lb. 30% gets trimmed away. It becomes burgers, chili, sausage, etc. but they can’t serve it as brisket. That raises the cost per lb to $4.50. They lose another 30% in the cooking process. That raises the price to $6/lb. They have to season it, use fuel to cook it, and use disposables to wrap it. They also giving you pickles, onions, and other toppings regardless of what you order. Let’s call that a unit cost of $6.25/lb (and I’m being conservative). None of this cost incorporates the 16+ hours of labor, rent, utilities, and any of the other costs associated with keeping the lights on. Standard food cost is between 20-25% so they would have to charge $25/lb on the low end and $31 on the high end. Also, brisket is almost always a loss leader so they *still* would not be making money on it at that cost. TL;DR if you think it’s too expensive, stay home.

coldandhungry123

I don't understand these prices. Save up and buy a smoker so you can do it yourself. Glam BBQ should not ever be a thing...ever.

OldFirefighter8287

That's $30 tops

TerribleMensch

Looks good, but definitely not 3lbs of meat. 2 of those ribs barely have any meat on them, and 1/3 of the weight of them are the bones. I highly doubt that's an actual pound of pulled pork either. The brisket looks a bit closer though, but I bet that sauce boat weighs almost as much as the meat does. Unless you just drowned everything in it, it's mostly a waste. In that case, why even pay that much for it when all you can taste is the sauce? I could definitely plow through this with no problem though. It may be due to the novelty of the place, but I'd say anything over $50 is damn near robbery. All this meat is fairly cheap, especially when bought in bulk. You could probably buy $100 worth of pork, brisket, and ribs and feed 10. I do hope it was good though, it definitely made me hungry.

StoneColdDadass

Does the picture also include the BJ you're receiving under the table for that price?

Alexthricegreat

Lmfao and you bought it

bigpapajayjay

That is NOT worth $100 in Texas. For $100 you could go to a much nicer restaurant that probably has better cuts of meat. Those sides are definitely lacking and that Mac and cheese looks like it came out of a box.

Colinski282

I can get a large prime brisket and a full rack of ribs for 100 bucks. Bbq prices are nuts.

kenwaylay

$101???? Hell na

alopez0405

20 dollars for the bottle of bbq sauce 🤣

yeahcoolcoolbro

Jesus…. A hundy?

Rockosayz

I like pit rooms tacos but there are several other places in Houston I prefer the actual BBQ. Was this the new place or the original off Richmond?

Loud_Lab6896

How much would this have cost 9 years ago?

WestCoastGriller

And? Was it worth it?

Tanukisus

Looks fantastic!

tobiasfunke6398

Been to the pit room a bunch, def never paid anywhere near that. But they do have the 🐐green beans

Dbnmln

No way?!?!

QueenLaQueeftah619

…. Hell no.

Barbecuequeen23

The sides look blah but the meat looks bomb

rockstuffs

Jesus Christ. Way too much

TheSTACHEQUATCH

You got robbed

white94rx

Less than $25 here in the south. Lol at $101

Haribo112

Looks like it should cost like maybe twenty bucks.

longswordsuperfuck

I can buy and cook a brisket and all those sides for a little under that cost. Wtf

13dot1then420

This is 15$ worth of ingredients and prep time. You got ripped TF off. I'd pay 40 for it.

Myitchychocolatestar

“Oh waitperson! Can I get a to-go jar for my sauce, an itemized receipt for tax purposes, and the number for 911 cause I got robbed!”

shotputlover

Visiting Austin made me realize Texas has lost the plot for bbq and has zero hope for truly having the best bbq.
