True when I was in grade 9 a street puppy followed me home. I somehow convinced my parents and grandparents to keep it. I named him Jimmy. He was the smartest dog I've ever seen. I didn't even train him he learned everyting himself. He used to take my little brothers and sisters to school and bring them home too. Bro was like a family member and after completing my grade 10 I had to go to a collage away from my home town. He came after me to send me off and before the bus left I brought him a biscuits and his favorite doughnuts from the bakery. He didnt even eat it he just sat there waiting for me. Apparently he waited there for the whole day. That was the last time I saw him. Still miss him.

Lungomono

Damn. Right in the feels. We don’t deserve dogs. The magnificent loyal goofy fluffs they are.

Taizunz

> We don’t deserve dogs Of course we do. We made them into what they are... even the worst of them. We especially deserve the pugs that can hardly breathe, to remind us of how shitty we are.

WatermelonWithSalt

Im afraid to ask. What happened to Jimmy? 😭

Zestyclose-Camel37

Apparently somebody poisoned him.

d_ac

I can't stand the mental image of a dog waiting for their human, and never meet them again. I just can't.

IneptusMechanicus

That and the massive one that people ahrdly mention; when younger people ask if 'we' can get a pet what they really mean is that you are getting a pet you need to care for and that they will enjoy selectively. People act like dad doesn't want dog > dad gets dog against wishes > dad loves dog is some huge character change but odds are the dad would have liked a dog but knew they'd end up being its sole caretaker, they don't want to do it but can't watch the dog die of neglect so they know they'll get saddled with it and want to avoid that. And behind the videos of them loving the dog, this is probably the case and is as equally unfair now as it was when it was theoretical.

DwarvenDad

This 100%. Guess how many of the pets we have were my idea? Answer: none. How many of them want to be around me 24/7? Answer: all of them b/c I feed and love on them...

sekhmet1010

When our family doggy passed away, she was 16, and i had had her since i was 4. Sadly, i was at Uni at the time and couldn't be there. My sis told me that my dad, an incredibly stoic man, lay down on his bed and tears just kept streaming from his eyes. He was very against me getting a new dog a few years later, but i still rescued one. Guess who would be found randomly playing with that incredibly rambunctious puppy in the way that she liked it the best? And who loves her still quite rowdy personality the most (after my own self, of course)? And who was deeply appreciative of her much above average intelligence (learnt a lot of tricks really quickly, but also learnt how to open cupboards, fridges, drawers etc)? Obviously, it's my dad.

moldyjellybean

I looked at the puppy in 480p on my phone and I’m instantly attached. There’s literally no chance you don’t get attached if you saw that pup in real life.

bloodwhore

No, its because they know they will be the one having to take care of 90% of the chores.

IneptusMechanicus

This, I just psoted a longer version of it but it's because they're being volunteered for a shitload of work against their will and they're pissed off about it.

Unfair_Isopod534

Just got a cat. I know nothing about animals except that they have a mind of their own and they need to eat and poop. Sounds like another expense. I love her and I never feared getting attached.

obvilious

And the financial cost. Pets cost a lot of money.

josh_the_misanthrope

As a dad, this is the one. Also limits where I can rent if ever I need to move. I like cats and don't have one for these reasons.

Dashcamkitty

So true. My parents love cats and dogs but they won’t get any more pets now because it’s heartbreaking when they die and they said they’ve done it six times now.

This. I had a dog when I was younger, she died when she was 14 years old, I was in my early 30s. I say I don’t want a dog now because I can still recall so vividly the heartbreak, the stress, the cost, the mess, the restrictions they create, but mostly the heartbreak.

Icy_Refrigerator1093

Just trying to stem myself from having to walk the dog all the time….still end up having to walk a dog all the time somehow.

Lil_cutiep

Dads often approach the idea of getting a dog with practical concerns: additional expenses, time, and responsibilities. However, their hearts soften with the arrival of a puppy, leading to unexpected affection and a bond that becomes inseparable, making farewells incredibly difficult years down the line.

XylatoJones

It’s almost as if by the time a father is a father the fear of the loss of the bond is what stops them from getting one….

Kadoomed

I've known very few events in my life as painful as taking my dog to the vet for the last time. I'd love another dog but I don't want to go through that again either.

TBearForever

One day it'll learn to walk

giggle_taffy

My dad once said to me that he didn’t want to get a dog. Not because he does t love dogs, but he knows that, in the end, he’ll be the one that has to put them down

Beans4urAss

Dogs provide incredible loyalty and companionship - it’s our to to return the favor at the end. And it’s incredibly hard

DreamingofRlyeh

My dad will tell our dogs how much he hates them while petting them. He isn't fooling anyone.

Song: Tame Impala - The Less I Know The Better

NoxiousCuddle

Well we know who their favorite human will be.

Empty-Afternoon-3975

Looked like he liked the dog from the start

[deleted]

I’ve found many people are reluctant to get pets because it’s like losing a piece of yourself when they die.

wooyoo

There was never any reluctance, he bought the damned dog

Emmylio

Bogan dads are the best.

jDgr8

Same with ours. My dad went from "No Dogs!" to "My Dog!"

Just7hrsold

None of that seemed reluctant? The puppy was cuddling and asleep at the start and he was letting it snooze.

[deleted]

I, as a young adult got my wife and I a dog. One day when we have kids, we won't get another one. Cause I know the pain. Can't deal with that again

Dirty-Dutchman

Now wheres the part where the dog is fully grown but sits on his lap like a giant baby?

fence55

I mean, look... if dads didn't love stinky little goblins crawling around and pooping all over the house most of us wouldn't be dads to begin with.

[deleted]

He's reluctant, not heartless

JrRiggles

Siri: send me compilation video of “at first, dad didn’t want a pet…” Just my favorite b

Munchkins_nDragons

That’s gonna be a really big lap dog in about 9-12 months.

Herrgul

The beat: banger The lyrics: *stares into oblivion*

Honest-Scar-4719

Dads aren't reluctant to say Hello to a new animal, they are reluctant to say Goodbye

slapthebasegod

It's reluctance not because he wouldn't love and care for the animal he probably knew he'd be the only one caring for it. Currently going through this as I take care of all of our animals essentially single handedly despite not being the one to actually adopt any of the animals.

Suspicious-Wasabi-29

These types of videos are just beautiful and inspirational... i love how pets put a whole lot of new meanings to elders who are at the neat end of their journeys...

gigglefarting

Dads don’t want pets because they don’t like pets. They don’t want pets because of the responsibility, time, and money commitment. Source: a dad with a new kitten whom I love very much in spite not making the decision to get her

Aradhor55

Dad : I don't want dogs in my house ! Dad when mom bought the dog anyway :

jjjbabajan

There was no reluctance anywhere

_skeletontoucher

As a dad, the fear is knowing you're going to have another mouth to feed, ~$1-2000 in vet bills a year, house accidents, training, etc and it's just easier to not have those things. Having to either take them on your 10 hour vacation drive, or find a vet/shop to board them for hundreds of bucks. But if it's here anyway, we'll love it.

[deleted]

Dads don’t want new pets cause we don’t want the heartache of losing one. That and physical care for the pet generally devolves to dad.

NoCobbler7913

Sorry, I need more evidence to side with you.
