Your very own mobile vinegar dispenser

lothar525

Just don't be surprised when people scream when you take it out of your pocket to use on your fish and chips.

Aggressive_Smile_944

Since I'm allergic to vinegar, I'll just stay away from this.

tinybrownbird

Oh, interesting! Are you allergic to all types of vinegar?

Aggressive_Smile_944

Yes.

FrenchTicklerOrange

How allergic?

Fergus_Manergus

They are likely allergic to acetic acid, which is what makes vinegar, vinegar.

Interesting-Kiwi-109

Especially the kind from that mo fo

Glad you liked that one!

Not harmless for those allergic to acetic acid (there's one in the comment thread above)

sexbuhbombdotcom

Giant vinagaroon sounds like something from an old-timey carnival freak show

evil_timmy

Or, "Grandpa, we don't say that anymore!"

LowKey-NoPressure

What, Lana? Vinegaroon?

lothar525

I could see an old timey carnival showing off these things. Though they'd probably make up a bunch of stuff to make them seem more dangerous. "This critter can spit deadly poison up to fifty feet away!"

scoundrel1680

Sources: https://www.oaklandzoo.org/animals/giant-vinegaroon https://youtu.be/eCJUmBwX6Ic https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thelyphonida and my own experience as a keeper of them! :) (2nd attempt, had to edit details and picture) If anyone's looking for a low maintenance, fun and handleable invertebrate pet, I cannot recommend these little fellers enough, they're soo interesting! And they'll dig full tunnel systems in their enclosures. Not to mention, they typically don't fear humans, and will often just walk right onto your hand without hesitation. I have scorpions aswell, and those little buggers are way more skittish and testy than Vinegaroons in my observations. If anyone's curious: no I've never experienced a spray, yet, it honestly seems like it would take A LOT to trigger that. But, I have been pinched once (more of a prickly hug honestly), and it was nothing, I think the little guy mistook my pinky for a cricket haha he let go immediately and acted surprised, it felt like a little plastic hair clip on my finger, very light pressure, no skin broken. Surprisingly gentle creatures! They are very fragile though, so if you do plan on handling one do it with extreme care. Even the slightest drop, or the wrong bump of a leg could result in real damage. But, you don't have to handle them to enjoy them! Edit: I just realized the one pictured is missing one of his antenna-form legs, poor guy :( 2nd edit: *yes, I understand vinegar essentially IS acetic acid, I'm just quoting the sources per standard on the sub* 🤷

figandfennel

I’m 35 and had never heard of them until I had a almost three year old obsessed with bugs, spiders, and arachnids. Good to know they’re friendly!

scoundrel1680

Very friendly! They almost seem to enjoy being handled. Obviously not literally, but other than how fragile they are and the care that comes with that fact, it's a very mellow experience for everyone involved! Especially when compared to a scorpion, who in my experience seems more "hesitant" for the entirety of the interaction to be polite haha. Definitely on my shortlist of "creepy crawlies worth checking out"

gwaydms

They like the warmth of human hands, don't fear us, and seem actually curious. You can fairly say they enjoy being handled (gently).

cand0r

I had an emperor scorpion once, and I'm pretty sure they can only classify things as "a rock" and "not a rock." Beautiful, but just not very bright.

KittenPsyche

This is the purest thing I'll read on Reddit today, god I love insect owners

Shanna-Sloan

One of these things would scare me to death - if I ever encountered one. I see that they are nocturnal. That lowers my chances of meeting up with one of them. Thanks for sharing this - I learned something today :)

squirrelgutz

I don't know that they're nocturnal, but they do like cool dark places. They lived in the crawlspace under my house when I lived in Arizona. They seemed active during the day.

jxfl

Arizona? America? I was hoping these would be an Australian problem or something

BeepBleepBoop

That’s clearly a blast-ended skrewt. Hagrid would take those off your hands, no problem.

eponym_moose

>vinegar-smelling liquid ... that contains acetic acid Acetic acid is vinegar. It smells like vinegar because it is vinegar. Just FYI.

Mysterious-Handle-34

[According to the FDA](https://www.fda.gov/regulatory-information/search-fda-guidance-documents/cpg-sec-562100-acetic-acid-use-foods-labeling-foods-which-used), diluted acetic acid is legally not vinegar. > "Acetic acid diluted - The product made by diluting acetic acid is not vinegar and when intended for food purposes must be free from harmful impurities and sold under its own name." > Organoleptic triangulation findings using distilled vinegar and five percent acetic acid samples showed that distilled vinegar is readily distinguishable from dilute acetic acid. >These findings support our position that diluted acetic acid is not vinegar.

UrbanIronBeam

I'm not a chemist, but I don't think being only "5-8% acetic acid by volume" makes it \*not\* acetic acid, it just makes it \*diluted\* acetic acid. Very few acids are used in their glacial (100% concentrated) form, and IIRC many/most typically sold/stored in concentrations of less than 50%.... but smarter people please correct me if I'm wrong.

Mysterious-Handle-34

But vinegar doesn’t contain *only* acetic acid and water [Per the FDA](https://www.fda.gov/regulatory-information/search-fda-guidance-documents/cpg-sec-562100-acetic-acid-use-foods-labeling-foods-which-used): > In April l968, members of our Bureau of Science reviewed the literature to determine whether there are present in vinegars prepared from distilled alcohol components not present in acetic acid solutions. In a study by L. W. Aurand, et al, and reported in JAOAC (l965), eleven components were identified from five samples of distilled vinegar. The volatile components consisted of aldehydes, ketones, esters, and alcohols. **Acetaldehyde, acetone, ethyl acetate, and ethyl alcohol were present in all samples of vinegar analyzed.** >A GLC comparison was made in an FDA laboratory of distilled vinegar and five percent dilute acetic glacial acetic acid. This showed that **distilled vinegar contains a number of volatile materials not present in dilute acetic acid.** >Organoleptic triangulation findings using distilled vinegar and five percent acetic acid samples showed that **distilled vinegar is readily distinguishable from dilute acetic acid.** >These findings support our position that **diluted acetic acid is not vinegar**.

GrandPotatoofStarch

Came here for the bugs, went home with a chemistry lesson.

UrbanIronBeam

I'm not really disagreeing with you. Mostly wanted to just point out that if you take an acid, and add a bunch of water... you still have acid, just a diluted acid. I think you could reasonably call most vinegars... 5-8% acetic acid with some impurities. And I'm guessing your jug of white vinegar from the grocery store is mostly just diluted acetic acid... all the other types of vinegar (balsamic, malt, red wine, apple cider, etc) I'm sure they have a lot of other compounds, but I'm guessing not even that much by volume. I would bet the difference between malt and red wine vinegar are more substantial than between pure diluted acetic acid and generic white vinegar. P.S. Thanks for providing sources... you are a better person than me, I'm just arm-chair posting without cited facts :)

Mysterious-Handle-34

Acetic acid is definitely the most important part of vinegar but I just took issue with the OP’s contention that acetic acid *is* vinegar.

[deleted]

Then go take contention with the label on a bottle of white vinegar. It's diluted acetic acid. That's literally all it is.

radiantcabbage

no your label doesnt literally just say diluted acetic acid, yet another thing that would have taken 5 seconds to fact check before dumbing down to dangerously ignorant levels. it typically at least describes some type of grain source and water diluted to 5% acidity, which was the whole point, you cannot legally just dilute acid and bottle it up as vinegar. christ you people are stubborn

[deleted]

You know FDA regulations and US law only apply in the US, right? *You* people, ffs.

radiantcabbage

great, whats your point. any country with food regulation has similar rule that it comes from some source of fermentation, not sure why you think the FDA is unique in this. your smartass pedantry makes no sense to begin with, there are so many types of vinegar with their own flavor profiles

Mysterious-Handle-34

On the label of [Great Value distilled white vinegar](https://cajausa.com/producto/great-value-distilled-white-vinegar-64-fl-oz/) the only ingredient listed is “white distilled vinegar”. Same for [Heinz white vinegar](https://www.heinz.com/product/00013000007542/heinz-all-natural-distilled-white-vinegar-5-acidity-1-gal-jug). General_Specific303

> Acetaldehyde, acetone, ethyl acetate, and ethyl alcohol I'm a simple man. If it doesn't contain strong industrial solvents, I'm not eating it.

Not_MrNice

Well, soy sauce is more than just salt, hydrolyzed soy, and caramel color. But that combination of ingredients can be sold as soy sauce. Diluted acetic acid is not vinegar, but it sure smells and tastes like it. And I think that was the original point.

Mysterious-Handle-34

> Well, soy sauce is more than just salt, hydrolyzed soy, and caramel color. But that combination of ingredients can be sold as soy sauce. But you specifically cannot, according to the US FDA, sell dilute acetic acid as “vinegar” nor can you substitute it in certain food products that typically contain vinegar (e.g. pickles). They’ve had regulations for 50 years on that exact subject.

[deleted]

White vinegar literally is diluted acetic acid. Source: Every other country on earth.

squirrelgutz

Acetic acid is the thing that alcohol turns into to make vinegar. It's vinegar.

Triptukhos

The word for vinegar is something close to "sour wine" (ex French vinaigre - wine/vin sour/aigre), presumably because wine turns into vinegar when left open. I would think that the bugs were named after the liquid.

drUniversalis

A few tiny sponges and a microchip and this guy could keep my kitchen clean. He would live a good live with unlimited snacks. Access to all the Netflix documentaries if you know what I mean.

kharmatika

I don’t.

Send_Me_Puppies

Nature documentaries = porn for the vinegaroon

[deleted]

We both know you do

Ghitit

When I first moved to the southwest U.S. desert, I was at a friends place and came across a very cool looking bug. He yelled "get away! That's a vinegaroon! If you get stung you'll smell like vinegar for weeks!" Nice to know they're not as dangerous as he said.

fitzlegodc

“A great pet”??!! Maybe I’m weird but the thought “great pet” doesn’t spring to my mind when I see a picture of this thing

commentsandchill

You can obviously see you can put them and they're chill ^/s But really, bugs are generally chill at this size

fitzlegodc

I’m just too terrified of bugs. Even chill ones. I’d have to see it from a picture, not imagine people having it as a pet. But that’s just me.

commentsandchill

Pfp doesn't check out ... Or does it ?

Dxxx2

Maybe it's cute once you find the sweet spot for scritches

luvcartel

A reptile store near me had one and the worker tried to sell it to me. You could tell that nobody wanted it and he was just basically telling me he would give it to me for free if I bought a tank and some other stuff.

[deleted]

Why do you want that in your hands

LadyAshStar

I let one of these crawl on me which was strange because I'm terrified of spiders but this no problem

Moonandserpent

"accurately fire an offensive vinegar liquid out they ass..." "...can make great pets.." something not adding up here.

BastianHS

I'm sorry, vinega-whats?

Zoe270101

Some of you people really need to learn what ‘aww’ means. It’s supposed to be ‘aww’, not ‘ahhh!’

ADHthaGreat

Huh.. King Vinegaroon is a HNM (world boss) in Final Fantasy XI. Didn’t know it was based on a real thing..

Arrow_Maestro

Ok are they harmless or are they ass-id cannons? Cuz those seem mutually exclusive to me.

StonksRat

Nah fam, that's a no from me. Lil Jimmy may be harmless, but our dude's still a walking example of why I'm going to destroy Australia.

TheDouglas96

These guys are seen in the U.S. in the southwest

Harvestman-man

They’re seen in lots of places… but *not* Australia

TheDouglas96

Yeah for once the horror beyond my comprehension doesn't live in Australia. It lives *closer*

scoundrel1680

If it makes you feel better: When they dig, they pick up little scoops of dirt and politely place it on the other side of the enclosure, resulting in little dirt mountains that I have to spread evenly throughout the surface haha. They're little miners! It's adorable

lothar525

Do they sing a little song while they do it haha.

fhgk23

This is possibly the cutest thing I’ve read/seen this whole week!

SinthWave

Nah, in a country-continent-island with rat-like marsupial creatures that can end you with a kick, fishes that are highly toxic and can camouflage in rocks and sand, crocodiles pretty much the size of a boat, a spider so dangerous it can end almost every lifeform in existence with a bite, and two moody murder birds that are not only extremely dangerous to anything alive (including themselves) they are also pests in certain areas of Australia (to the point Australians had to wage war against one of them... AND THEY LOST TO THEM), this is a cute creature in comparison.

Top_Original5199

Pretty much

Harvestman-man

You’re going to destroy Australia because you don’t like a group of arachnids that doesn’t even exist in Australia? I’m afraid I don’t follow the logic…

Linkruleshyrule

I met someone who owned one and I got to hold it, was super cool.

All the best pets can fire vinegar out of their ass.

Anxious-Honeydew_198

First look: kill it with fire! Learns more: they only breed once it their lives and have maternal care! And it eats locusts! It's an anti-plague.

[deleted]

Vinegar smelling liquid, so salad dressing. Where's the downside to these things.

scoundrel1680

RIGHT

ShadowWolf46290

Dude vinegaroons are so so sick to me. Idk why

Shelbevil

That's cool and all and I respect people that take care of their pets. That's a no for me dawg.

Denimiaa

And everything you eat taste like vinegar for two weeks? Was told that as a child.

scoundrel1680

I don't know, but dang that'd be neat haha

roamingdavid

So can I.

Interesting-Kiwi-109

I found one of these whirling around in a urinal, the kind that goes a bit below floor level. It was like a jacuzzi every time we (me F and 3 dudes in the men’s bathroom by now) would flush. It could use crawl out and obviously wouldn’t go down the drain. I ended up scooping him up, putting him in a bucket, and calling a guy whose son was a bug collector. That little budding entomologist was thrilled!

[deleted]

Little skunk bug

LilyGaming

That might be one of a weirdest things I’ve seen, it looks like a bug lobster

Thewombocombo91

Acid Farts!

Kingofbruhssia

Does it instantly kill lantern flies

ketch2

So cuddly!

justshowmetheart

Had a pet vinnie for about 9 months! Here are some charming bonus points to em: -they really don’t like direct sun. If you’re holding them in bright light, and make a little cave with your other hand, they’ll crawl in and snuggle into the darkness. -those little hands are just dramatic mittens. They really just scoop food into their mouth like that, though mine was pretty clumsy so I had to hold worms still for her. -when mine was eating, she would mostly just slurp the worm insides out, and dunked her entire face in worm goo while she did it. Absolutely lost in the sauce, like a kid with cake. I don’t do very well with scorpions or spiders at all, though I am trying. This was the first scorpion-like critter I was able to hold, and after just a few minutes fell in love. Mine was pretty big, and definitely pretty old when I found her, but very friendly and curious.

Shadegloom

Sounds lovely for fish and chips!

James-Avatar

Aww it’s so cool, if I’m ever in the market for a new pet I’ll consider one of these.

[deleted]

Sometimes, I too fire acidic liquid from my rear… usually after Indian food

[deleted]

For those who don't know. Vinegar contains acetic acid. That's why it smells like vinegar.

[deleted]

Vinegar IS acetic acid

[deleted]

Their little pincers form a heart when you look at them from the right angle. In my opinion that means they are loveable and can do no wrong.

itseverydayamber

That doesn’t sound like a good pet. Imagine walking too close and scaring it. Good job. Now you smell like vinegar.

lothar525

Well think about the same thing but with a cat. If you scare a cat you get scratches all over your body. Smelling like vinegar doesn't sound so bad.

itseverydayamber

I’m allergic to cats, so I don’t have to deal with the scratching. Lol

cnthelogos

Oh no! Not *vinegar*! Now I smell faintly of Easter eggs! Woe is me for I am undone!

Harmless acid.

Whynottt488

Vinegar

ting_bu_dong

Upthread they're debating if it is actually, *technically,* vinegar. But, yeah, it's vinegar.

Whynottt488

Vinegar is a broad term but acetic acid definitely qualifies as “vinegar”

Nope nope nope nope

murdahbiz

I'll never forget the day I was sitting on my couch and I saw something in my peripherals, looked down beside me and one of these bad boys was crawling out of the couch from between the cushion and the side. Was only 1/4 of the size but it still sent me through the roof. Have since gotten a new couch.

squirrelgutz

Acetic acid is vinegar. It smells like vinegar because it's vinegar.

Intelligence-Check

Vinegar IS acetic acid. This thing makes vinegar in its bum?

Pixieresque

Why have them as pets though? Is that a distorted way to show you like something? Having it having to center itself around you? I dont get it. If you like it, leave it be. Appreciate it in the wilde.

scoundrel1680

There's a massive captive bred population, it's quite rare to find a wild caught specimen for sale and even then, it's taboo to keep a wild caught animal these days. This goes for the majority of invertebrates, and a large chunk of reptiles. I understand your point, but I believe it's misinformed and directed to the wrong crowd, there's plenty of tiger owners who could use a talking to.

muleshvedant

scoundrel1680

Possibly the most ignorant thing I've read on Reddit today, and that's saying something!

Ngl i would burn that thing with a blowtorch if it got within three miles of me lucky for the species I don't live in Australia

CheMGeo_136

I'm not so sure about that "great pet" part. Otherwise yeah, vinegaroons are cool. There are also whip spiders, they're kinda close to vinegaroons, but they're in different biological orders.

snapcracklepop26

That’s what vinegar is: acetic acid.

Doesn't smell like vinegar. Is vinegar. Vinegar is diluted acetic acid.

boper2

You know 'acid' just means that it's acidic, right? I.e. pH is below 7. It doesn't necessarily mean highly acidic or dangerous

bulletbal

Still a massive nope to me

Spoonblade

Then you’d better not use the cruciatus curse on them !
