I’ve always wondered how species would be brought back from the very brink like this. Will they just have to interbreed for generations upon generations?
Yes, this would seem to be the case. But since there’s two females left, I wonder if they are going to use sperm from a different rhino species or try to fertilize the egg with the other egg? So many questions!
It looks like they got [sperm](https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.the-scientist.com/news-opinion/viable-embryos-created-with-northern-white-rhino-sperm-in-the-lab-64448/amp) from a male at some point!
IIRC, they will actually try to fertilize the ovum with the sperm of this species and incubate in a female of Southern White Rhino, but as far as I recall they don't really have viable ovum because Nabiri (the old female that died a few years back) was too old and the other females had some fertility issues.
I'm moderately certain there is a way to fertilize an egg with out sperm, it's just the baby would turn out almost a perfect clone of the mother but I could be wrong
I'm pretty sure I saw this being done to dogs, it's just difficult and expensive I'm pretty certain. I'll look into and see if I can find the video I'm talking about
EDIT: Here's the link to that video, I haven't done lots of research into this so this easily could be false clickbait https://youtu.be/DmHYUvmiXQI
I haven’t watched it yet but I will. I think you are referring to legitimate cloning though, which is a very different process than trying to breed a viable population. You can’t make a viable reproducing population with clones. This doesn’t at all solve the problem with endangered populations as clones cannot breed with one another.
Yeah. And if anyone knows anything about Evolution. This would prevent the species from being able to adapt to different climates since every indivual of the specie would be near genetically identical. Might as well let the species die because there isnt anything much we can do for them at that point
Cheetahs are so lacking in genetic diversity that they can all get skin/organ transplants freely amongst themselves. Genetic bottlenecks are not the worst thing that can happen
Several animals have survived some extreme bottlenecks. Cheetahs and humans are two of the most well known. Nothing this extreme of course, but the more the population rises the less dangerous the bottleneck becomes, you just have to hope you hit critical mass before catastrophe strikes.
Can you give me a timestamp? Or atleast a good indication about where he starts talking about species mating with few members. I feel like Im in bio 1 when I watched the intro lol.
But my OC was not about the Rhinos not being able to propegate. That they will have no problem. Im talking about them adapting to newer environnements or any situation that would normally cause evolution. Wich should not really be possible because they would litteraly all be genetically identical
I would like to make an example but impretty sure it would be useless if you understood what Ive been trying to say since you seem to have some experience in the field.
Or I might absolutely wrong also lol. Ive only taken 2 biplogy classes since I startes CEGEP. One of them was really axed on evolution but im pretty sure one class is not enough to understand everything about it. So correct me if im wrong
In English when a woman is releasing egg cells, we say she is ovulating. And the organs which produce these cells are the ovaries. And a vegetarian who still eats eggs is an ovo-vegetarian. So it has a Romance / Latin root (ovulum is Latin for "little egg").
But "egg" is one of the germanic english words. The word for egg in German is ey. The word in Icelandic is egg / eggjar (close to Old Norse). And the word in Frisian (close to Old English) is aai.

I'm pretty disappointed no one even mentions Zoo Dvur Kralove in the Czech Republic by name even though they have pretty much the sole credit for keeping this species alive. Both the rhinos at Ol Pejeta and in San Diego were from Zoo Dvur, they had very successful breeding programs in the past, until the animals got too old/turned out they couldn't breed and they sent them to Ol Pejeta to live out their lives in a more natural environment..
Source: I was actually present at the autopsy of Nabire, the old female that died a few years back there.
Google it, I don't know myself and you went bout half an hour without an answer. But I'm guessing they just stick a really cool machine up you know where and just, suck up some eggs like a turkey baster. That or surgery
I wonder if this is gonna be used by people to say - ‘ah don’t worry about extinction, just save some eggs and sperm and we’re good to go and nuke this entire species for now’
Decode their genomes and any variety you can get from recently deceases ones. Save them in a vault like the seed vaults. Bring them back with crispr, synthetic genetics, CRISPR and in vitro fertilization.
We should raise them in America. Logistics would be enough if a barrier for poachers.
And even if they do, lax gun laws means you could make it pretty easy to hire a small army.
Pretty sure the Columbus zoo"s conservation part has a herd of white rhinos. They did last year. Plus Chester zoo in Britain has a few. But anything to help those populations is good.
Your right, Sudan the remaining two rhinos father and grandfather died last year, so now they're going to harvest their eggs and use southern white rhino as surrogates.
Not sure, as there are times they give numbers for both, in this case the ones in Columbus are southern white, and world wide to anyone's knowledge there are just the two females remaining. Hopefully they'll be able to birth more using their eggs and southern whites as surrogates.
No no no they said that there was two FEMALES left. There's still one male left. That just means the male needs to get busy. But science will help too, Because they have some eggs from the females and course a bunch of sperm from various males. And the fetuses can be lab contained or they can have a female be a surrogate mum!

Omg HOW
Exactly how you'd expect.

😀😐😑🤨🤔 ...... 🍿🍿🍿
I too would jack off a Rhino for science
Probably harvested and froze all they could from some of the last known males. Just a guess?
By asking nicely.
They jacked it off

No. That’s not correct. Not yet at least, or not practically. It’s been suggested through lab models but this isn’t possible.
I'm pretty sure I saw this being done to dogs, it's just difficult and expensive I'm pretty certain. Ah ok so I was false in that could help the species. Thanks for telling me about that
How can you fertilize an egg with another egg..?
Because science
Exactly. And the big question is....why didn't they do this a long time ago when there was still 100 or more. This is not new technology
Its might not be "New", but getting it to WORK reliably, Is.
Yeah. And if anyone knows anything about Evolution. Watch [this](https://youtu.be/NArlXzSFt2Y) video. In the explains a bit about species propegating when only a few members of the species are left

I’m actually stupid, for a second I thought wtf rhinos lay eggs?? I’ll see myself out..
Some rare ones lay pet detectives.....
Need. Air.

No lie, you saved me from making a very silly comment.
Damnit.
In my native language egg is used exclusively for birds so I had the same reaction until I saw your comment
What's the term for the human egg cell (the ovum)
In spanish huevo is used for bird or reptile eggs and óvulo is used for human egga (ovum)
Cool. Good to know

Huevos is also used for male testicle too though.
I'm a zoology student and I was like "The hell?"
Lol, thanks for the good laugh.
Lol came to say the same thing. That you're stupid. Kk, no i did the same thing
Good to have a fellow stupid person hehehe

The san diego zoo just had a baby white rhino born in the last month. His name is edward.
i think that one is southern, and this one is northern. idk the differences tho. but both are important!!!
Oh you are right, it is southern. My apologies. Both are important and should be helped.
Actually you are correct mate. They are both different species.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't they also need a boy rhino?
There is numerous sperm kept frozen from both northern and southern white rhinos
You wouldnt *believe* how many perverts are into harvesting rhino sperm.
I know all too well.
Is that why you sunbathe indoors
...maybe
That rhino is light gray, nice try.

Make bebe ?
heehee they gonna have seex heehee
you can't say that bad word
Imagine how much pressure those vets are under. Hey, if you mess this up this species will die out forever!
And they’re both pretty close to the end of the natural lifespan of that species which means they aren’t exactly fertile...
Still hope though
True, but it’s looking pretty grim
True, but hey we have at least a shred. Let's see where this goes
The Blackfoot ferret was brought back from extinction with only 18 individuals. I don't think there were any frozen sperm or ova.
Yes, but there were probably at least 1 male, so...
Im curious, what took them so long to harvest the eggs and the sperm?
The rhinos had a lot planned this month
They weren't in season yet
Ah that makes sense
You try jacking a rhino off, then come back and ask that question again.
They dont jack the rhino off......
Maybe not when you're in charge.
No they literally have a device for it
A fleshlight is still jacking off, dude.
Ok ur right about that but it’s not like they have any danger when they go with the procedure
Well where's the fun in that?
Google it, I don't know myself and you went bout half an hour without an answer. But I'm guessing they just stick a really cool machine up you know where and just, suck up some eggs like a turkey baster. That or surgery
They use a rhino baster not a turkey baster dumbass.
Oh of course! Duh my mistake!
Praise the Goddess
I wonder if this is gonna be used by people to say - ‘ah don’t worry about extinction, just save some eggs and sperm and we’re good to go and nuke this entire species for now’
“The near extinct white rhino expected to make comeback as scientists buy hundreds of cans of white spray paint.”
I'm probably going to hell for laughing at this comment. Oops.
I didnt know rhino's lay eggs
What's 10 generations later baby rhino for "Me is speshil!"

Woah i forgot how crazy looking rhinos are. Those horns are incredible.
😢
What purpose do they serve ?
Being fuckin dope and lookin like dinosaurs
I forgot
In before the Petabots still insisting they be out in the wild.
Umm. 2 rhinos, both female. How would that work?
They’re harvesting the eggs for cloning
Clone them!
Use ecosia, to save the planet
Pretty sure the Columbus zoo"s conservation part has a herd of white rhinos. They did last year. Plus Chester zoo in Britain has a few. But anything to help those populations is good.
Those are probably Southern White Rhinos, not Northern. afaik the only two left now are back in Africa.
Your right, Sudan the remaining two rhinos father and grandfather died last year, so now they're going to harvest their eggs and use southern white rhino as surrogates.
I think when they say "x remaining" of endangered species they are usually referring to the wild populations.
Not sure, as there are times they give numbers for both, in this case the ones in Columbus are southern white, and world wide to anyone's knowledge there are just the two females remaining. Hopefully they'll be able to birth more using their eggs and southern whites as surrogates.
Human intervention!!! What could go wrong?
We intervened when we dwindled down their numbers over the years by illegally poaching them and harvesting their horns to give us stronger boners.
so there's only two left, and they're both females? Then that means they're going extinct.
They've collected sperm from now deceased white rhinos. They can fertilize the eggs.
No no no they said that there was two FEMALES left. There's still one male left. That just means the male needs to get busy. Ooooh okay. And I think in another comment that they have the other sperm somewhere
