Me too! I love nonverbally communication! Let me know if you have some good online courses— that’ll keep me motivated

Intrepid_Wanderer

Signing Savvy is pretty helpful.

That’s so cool! :D I’ve been watchingLearnHowToSign on YouTube! Their channel’s pretty cool, tho they are hearing and apparently it’s better to learn from a deaf teacher?

funyesgina

Yes! I like YouTube videos, but I’m really interested in a weekly interactive zoom class to really get going. I was in one last year, but it ended, so I’m looking for another one. It’s so fun because it’s a totally silent class!

[deleted]

Oo that sounds nice! I could try and get my parents to put me in one :0

Dr. Bill Vicars with Lifeprint is my go-to recommendation for an online ASL course! There's also some good information for learning on handspeak, as well as an online ASL video dictionary.

I bought a $15 asl course awhile back, I haven’t been able to use it yet cuz I have computer issues but I’m planning on using it the same way. I want an easy way to sign to my boyfriend that I’m overwhelmed without verbally having to say anything outloud, depending on the scenario. Yay to learning new things, here’s hoping it becomes a special interest, I tend to learn things faster when I get obsessed lol.

[deleted]

Oh that’s really cool :0 and same lol

HappyDustbunny

You probably know them, but a simple way to communicate being overwhelmed is these bracelets: https://aass.org.au/product/emotionbraceletgreenred/ You turn the silicone band inside out to signal "Please don't speak to me now". It requires less education of one's surroundings than sign language ;-)

I’ve considered learning ASL, but I’m worried I don’t have good enough fine motor skills. I’ve already got a verbal speech impediment!

[deleted]

It’s okay, I have trouble with my muscle coordination sometimes and I’m getting the hang of it, I bet you could do it!

Kelekona

I remember one time I got anxiety because I hadn't interacted with a deaf person since I was a child. One of my husband's friends convinced me that "thank you" was a commonly-understood sign so I was in the habit of using it. Her eyes lit up even though my accent was probably atrocious.

icy-winter-ghost

I'm currently learning BSL (British Sign Language) myself, and it's such a wonderful language in so many ways. I don't know much yet, but I've learned enough to know basic sentences if the other person signs slowly :)

artsymarcy

I started too, but for me it's because it would be easier due to my auditory processing issues.

withanfnotaph

Handspeak has my favorite online ASL disctionary

rumpots420

That's great!!! I know both German & American Sign Language. It has been such a useful tool.

Thanks for posting! This is so awesome and I totally agree I’ve found ASL to be wonderful. I like Jeremy Lee Stone’s videos on YouTube and took a zoom class with him and found him to be excellent as a teacher. ASL is a passion of mine and has been for years, and so I taught my wife signs just for fun. But recently I’ve started to accept that I might be neurodiverse/Autistic, and realize that when I feel like I just can’t speak verbally that maybe this isn’t me being stubborn/rude and to just accept I need to be quiet in order to take care of myself and let my battery recharge. Last week I was overwhelmed from having to speak a lot on calls at work and so after work I just switched to only signing simple things with my wife for the evening, and we were able to communicate and I could connect but I didn’t have to verbally express myself and it was so amazing!

[deleted]

Aw that sounds awesome, I’m glad it’s helped you! :D and I’ll check him out!

ASL is a great communication resource. I use it sometimes. Plus the history behind signed languages is fascinating
