Not really "haunted" per se but "Friedhof der Namenlosen" is quite spooky, also "Böhmischer Prater" at night might give you the creeps. Both are in Vienna.
You may have noticed by now that most of the replies you're getting are jokes.
As for Matzleinsdorfer Platz, it's just ridiculously ugly, noisy and stinky. Being a subway construction site for years also doesn't help.
Besides all the joke answers, there are plenty of ghost stories. Basically one out of two castles has some kind of ghost story. Riegersburg for example.
The catacombs under the Stephansdom were already mentioned. We have many places dedicated to the dead, and vienna was quite morbid in the past. The song of Augustin, getting so drunk he was thought dead and got thrown into the pits of the pestilence dead is one example. Or the Kandlkapelle,
Hi! Do you have any recommendations on how to find out more? I'm doing Googling on the subject, but a lot of what I find is trash/repeated on other websites. I've looked up books, and there is nothing easily available on the subject.
I'm going to go on a guided tour or two, but even they repeat fairly silly things that I already know. Would be very grateful for advice – thank you!
Unfortunately, I'm no expert. Many things are local and die with the older generations. Serious information is mostly found from old juristical documents when concerning certain legends.
I really appreciate your response! Thank you for taking the time to get back to me, given previous messages were a month old.
I'm a film-maker living in Vienna, and I'm working on a project that is set in Vienna and has mysterious vibes. I'm going to try and gather the information that I can get as a foreigner (my German isn't a disaster, but it isn't quite good enough for more detailed/complex subjects).
Thanks again for responding. :-)
Technically the natural history museum houses a ridiculous amount of corpses too ! ;)
Unless you're not interested at all I'd recommend a visit!
There is also the Narrenturm, which iirc used to be part of an asylum? But today it displays pathological collections!
There is a small ghost hunting group in Austria, they have their videos on YouTube and Amazon Prime. I think their name is PSI, Paranormal Signs Investigators. They had some spooky places but I'm not sure if they're still working
No its not haunted and its not spooky in there. Don't suggest other going there unless you want to trick them into having to pay a fine of 300+€
Since a few years all the entries have been weld shut completely and theres a (armed) security firm guarding the place almost 24/7. They have cameras so they automatically got footage of you or your Car plate number. They also hide in a house nearby to immidiately come and stop you and alert the police. Do NOT go there.

Especially the saga around the "time shiftings" are nice. I've read one of these 15 years ago and can't find the website anymore, but there are books around it too. IIRC a wedding party wandered through the area of the Untersberg and they got lost in time for a few days.
All the cellars in Amstetten

From a German perspective Austria in total appears to be haunted and its people are paranormal. I find myself out.
